Struggles of the Women Folk
T M Brown

Fiction - Historical - Personage

If Oprah Winfrey reads Struggles of the Womenfolk by T.M. Brown, it will probably be made into a movie one day. I say this because I know Oprah feels strongly about a lot of things, and two of the things she feels most strongly about are the struggles of women and the struggles of black people who grew up in the particular time and era of the South after slavery and before the civil rights movement. I was ten years old in 1968 so I missed the worst of the post-civil war life depicted by T.M. Brown in Struggles of the Womenfolk, but I remember the atmosphere of hate and oppression. Struggles of the Womenfolk opens in 1944 and the author captures the tone of the time and era brilliantly.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and compare Struggles of the Womenfolk to The Color Purple. Struggles of the Womenfolk worked better for me personally because it is less poetic and more realistic in my own humble opinion. T.M. Brown lets the characters tell their story and many of them are not poets, though their lives are the stuff that poetry is carved from. The dialect and dialogue are accurate. The depictions of black life at that time are accurate and direct. Struggles of the Womenfolk may be fated to become an American classic and for me it confirmed something I have always suspected: no matter how bad it is for the men, it is worse for the women. A great American novel.

Fiction - Historical - Personage

I liked The Laird’s Kidnapped Bride by Mysty McPartland very much. Actually, to be more accurate, I love the heroine of this historic novel, Lark. She is quite a woman. As you can guess by the title of the novel, Lark is kidnapped. As a matter of fact, the story opens right in the middle of the kidnapping, which is a great place to get a look at Lark’s mettle as well as jump into the plot. I don’t want to go into the reasons for the kidnapping as that would be something of a spoiler for the astute reader, but all is not as it first appears to Lark, and soon she will have to make some difficult decisions. Lark is more of an action person than she is a thinker, but she is far from stupid.
The thing I probably like most about The Laird’s Kidnapped Bride, besides the unyielding Lark, is the dialogue. I’m not from Scotland so I don’t really know how accurate this dialogue is, but it felt very fictionally accurate, both in the way it is written and spelled, and in the difference in tenor between most of the lairds and ladies and the common classes. The dialogue was as much fun as any I have read in a long time. If you want a flowing, fun read that ends too quickly, then read The Laird’s Kidnapped Bride. You won’t find a leading lady with more gumption anywhere. Mysty McPartland knows how to write great historical romantic fiction.

Fiction - Historical - Personage

Anna Belfrage’s In the Shadow of the Storm is the first installment in her new The King’s Greatest Enemy series. The setting is 13th century England. The novel follows the adventures, joys, and heartbreak of Kit … a beautiful young woman who is forced into a marriage not of her choosing. In time she cannot avoid falling into passionate love with her new husband. But her groom, Adam de Guirande, owes his position and properties to his lord, Sir Roger Mortimer. Indeed, he owes the lord his very life and existence. And as a man of honor, he follows his lord at all costs, even into rebellion against King Edward II and his torturous, bloodthirsty ally, Hugh Despenser. When the rebellion is crushed and the vengeful retribution begins, the lives of Adam and Kit de Guirande become nothing short of a quest for survival.
In the Shadow of the Storm is an epic story. Its villains are dark and heartless and its heroes are valiant. The character development is impressive. In the beginning Kit is a meek and obedient character, easily manipulated into obeying the demands of others. But as the storms of life bear down upon her, she develops a deep strength and resolve. She becomes an outspoken advocate for honor and truth. She defends her husband, family, and home with the ferocity of a wounded lioness. Her husband, Adam, also experiences a growth in character throughout the story, though not as dramatic as Kit’s. It is his unexpected and deep love for his wife that moves him beyond the typical warrior male of his time period. This love draws out of him an almost unexpected level of sensitivity. I thoroughly enjoyed the read. The proof is in the fact that I was left wanting more at the end. I am actually tempted to purchase the next volume in the set. This is the mark of a skilled and suspenseful author.

Fiction - Horror

The Tegen Cave by Inge-Lise Goss is an amazing horror fiction that made me sweat and that is not easy, I can tell you. Sara Jones, the protagonist of the story, knows that her life will not be the same. She ran away from her boyfriend and his crime family and started a new life in a new place. She even has a new boyfriend and her life is finally picking up. Things go downhill quickly when she receives a mysterious package. Inside the package is a spider. Despite being confused, she knows that somehow she and her family are compromised.
Now people around her are dying of mysterious poisonous spider bites. What is even more mysterious is the fact that these spiders and their poison have no effect on her. She is immune to them. And now that she is 25 years old, something about her past and her heritage is coming forward. Can she trust anyone in this world? With everything happening around her, can she keep herself and her family safe?
This novel has romance, action, drama and a lot of thrills for readers who love horror novels. You can actually feel your skin crawl when you read scenes about spiders. I loved Sara; she is relatable and she is strong. She is a level-headed character and very deep. Even with so many things happening in her life all at once, she was resilient and this is the reason why I loved her. This is definitely one of the best novels I have read this year. It was wonderful and truly well written.

Breaking the Silence

Fiction - Inspirational

Breaking the Silence by Diamante Lavendar is a beautifully written story about a woman's experience of childbirth. The story opens in the hospital as Joan Eastman faces a past fear in which she lost a child. And now she sits, pregnant again, with thoughts of fear. From there the story takes you on an emotional personal journey, a testimony of deliverance and the blessing of grace. The story moves through experiences to bring the reader into the story from a firsthand point of view.
It takes courage to write a story like this. The cover itself conveys a profound message of barrenness, which flows brilliantly with the theme of the story. The author states that it's based on a true story, which in itself is a work of bravery. I loved the author's point of view. With the diary inserts, you get an up close and personal invitation into Joan's fears, regrets, and prayers.
Sharing personal things in a fictional or non fictional way leaves you vulnerable to opinions. Courage stands in the face of opinions, knowing that the seed of the message was presented. An insert taken from the book speaks volumes. These words of truth can be utilized by anyone who is a victim.
'Victims never forget. Somewhere deep within their memories lie the things that have happened. It takes strength, great fortitude, to be able to turn the negative into positive. But it is essential in helping victims to fight their demons. And with God, it is possible.'
I recommend this book to anyone seeking words of encouragement through a wonderful, illustrated testimony of deliverance. The ending is the ultimate climax, in which you shall experience the beauty of Angelica Faith.

Wow! Just, wow! That's exactly what I thought when I finished reading The First Lie, which is Book One of the Selkie Moon Mystery Series by author Virginia King. This book gripped me from the very first page and kept me obsessively reading it all the way through to the last! Follow the story of Selkie Moon, a woman who has fled the clutches of an abusive husband and a controlling stepmother, uprooted her life from Sydney and moved to Hawaii, in the hopes of finding peace. But when mysterious and scary things begin to happen to her, even in her new environment, Selkie begins to wonder if she truly has made the right choice. The further Selkie goes in trying to find the truth, both of what is occurring now, and the truth of who she truly is, the more twisted and fascinating the tale becomes.
I loved The First Lie. Loved. It. How's that for a review? Well, it's how I really felt about this excellent start to what promises to be a fantastic new paranormal mystery series by author Virginia King. This story is unique and interesting, the characters, especially Selkie, are vividly drawn and relatable, and the story line is just fantastic. Any reader who enjoys mysteries, paranormal fiction, novels with a strong female protagonist, or just a great read of fiction in general will absolutely love this book. I am so pleased to highly recommend The First Lie and I am very much looking forward to reading more from author Virginia King as soon as I am able to!

The Dining Car

Fiction - Literary

One reader of Eric Peterson’s novel, The Dining Car, describes perfectly the nature of its central character Horace Button - a celebrity editorialist on all things cultural but specifically gastronomical - as Falstaffian. Physically huge and attitudinally challenged, a drinker par excellence, Horace provides the gravitational focus around which this book and its dazzling characters revolve. Even the narrator of this story, a conscripted bartender for Horace’s uniquely chosen manner of transportation - a handsomely reconstituted, elegant, 1932 Pullman-built, private railroad car - cannot escape the black-hole entrapment of Horace’s over-sized personal charisma. Horace is a drunk. The most cultured, opinionated, ornery, bellicose, and anachronistic drunk one might ever be disinclined to meet. The reader likewise succumbs to such astronomical force with the ambivalent love-hate feelings shared and endured by every incidental character in the book. The saving grace? From the very inception of its gloriously slapstick, eye-popping introductory scene, The Dining Car promises and delivers nothing less than a Falstaffian feast of fun.
Do not, however, be misled by such a fun-filled promise. There are moments of genuine pathos embedded in Eric Peterson’s roller-coaster book, The Dining Car. Such an unredeemable character as Horace is duly bound to come with some satisfying surprises. And though this most definitely remains a character-driven book, dominated by a truly unforgettable “character-at-large,” prepare also to be pleasantly surprised by the masterful prose offered up here by the author, whose pacing, descriptions, dialogue and plotting are seamlessly and effortlessly impeccable, allowing one to fully concentrate his attention upon the fine, if most eccentric, gourmet dining experience of a lifetime.

Fiction - Literary

The Siege (A Psychological Thriller) by James Hanna is a fiction novel that follows a prison takeover. The Siege will appeal most to an audience of adults who enjoy prison fiction with all of its raw grittiness. The story takes place in The Indiana Penal Farm where one hundred prisoners hold twelve guards hostage in the laundry room. In an attempt to defuse the situation without any loss of life, a dorm counselor, Tom Hemmings, has been brought in to talk the prisoners down. However, with the inmates divided into different gangs and tension building quickly, will Tom Hemmings be able to keep everyone alive and safe?
The Siege by James Hanna is a well-written psychological thriller with a realistic feel. While the book itself is fiction, it is clear that the author has done research into prisons due to the true-to-life feel of the inmates and the prison environment. The Siege reminded me a lot of a negotiator with the hostage situation, and emergency services relying on one person to save the day. I found Tom Hemmings to be my favorite character; he was well developed over the course of the book, and I liked his determination in the face of uncertainty and danger. Overall, I greatly enjoyed reading The Siege by James Hanna and I enjoyed the fast pace and realistic grittiness of the plot!

The Policewoman by Justin W.M. Roberts is a military fiction story set in the year 2026. Sarah is a policewoman with a lot of ambition. She works for Densus-88, an anti-terrorist unit, set up to fight the narco-terrorism sweeping the world. The Irish Drug Cartel is incredibly powerful; they have extended their manufacturing plants to Indonesia, Ireland, and Scotland, and are not afraid to kill whoever stands in their way. Sarah is assigned a new task; together with the Interpol Incident Response Team, she must find the members of the Cartel and shut them down. Working closely with the SAS, the beautiful and smart policewoman has to learn Close Quarters Battle Tactics and learn how to use them in the field. All is going well until things start to get personal for Sarah. Now she not only has to help find the Cartel, she also has to protect her family and friends, and even herself as the battle to win heats up.
The Policewoman by Justin W.M. Roberts is an incredibly powerful novel. Although it is set in the not too distant future, it does reflect very much on things that are happening in the world right now and, perhaps scarily, is something that could very well become a reality for all of us. The plot line was excellent; it was solid, strong and had some very surprising, if not terrifying, twists in it along the way. The characters, especially the main protagonist, are incredibly well developed, written to fit the story exactly and there is nothing left to the imagination. This ensures any reader will know exactly who they are reading about and this leads to a deeper understanding of the story. Fantastic fast-paced story, this would make an excellent movie! Looking forward to reading more from Mr. Roberts in the future
