The author introduces three categories of idea spaces, closed, open, and clopen, with clopen’s capacity to hold contradictory states simultaneously. Drawing on mathematics and physics, he applies topological and set theory principles to describe the mind’s structure, emphasizing the uncountability and impermanence of ideas. Decrop connects mindfulness and meditation to navigating this idea space, defining them as specific modes of attention rather than thought elimination. He also examines physical cosmology, gravity, spacetime, and the self as layered constructs within nested scales. Decrop integrates scientific and philosophical perspectives to propose a cohesive understanding of mental and cosmic phenomena.

The Idea Space: The Science of Awakening Your Non-Self by Clement Decrop is an ambitious and original work that merges science, mathematics, philosophy, and meditative practice into a unified model of consciousness and the universe. Decrop introduces “idea space” as a central construct, and he does an excellent job of taking theories that are completely outside my purview of understanding, but makes them perfectly accessible. I most enjoyed his sections on black holes and, as someone of Asian descent, connected closely to the koans, which are anecdotes, and a variety of which I used to hear from my grandmother alongside parables and even rhetorical questions. The author's are different and applied in his own way, but it is still an addition that feels personal. The figures are helpful, especially in how they visualize and perceptively communicate beyond the text. Overall, this is an intriguing reframe of reality, and I think those with an interest in similar concepts will enjoy and learn from it. Very highly recommended.

To See Far: Conflict and Cooperation on the Space Frontier by James Van Laak is a riveting insider's perspective of one of humanity's most challenging projects - the creation of the International Space Station under intense technical, political, and psychological pressure. As a former leader in NASA, the author puts readers in the middle of the crucial decisions, negotiations, and life-and-death situations of this unique project. The memoir combines drama with a deeply human story about trust, disagreement, perseverance, and cooperation in overcoming the barriers of language, culture, and ideology. Free from sensationalism and hype, the book focuses on the difficulties of progress because of flawed systems and individuals and on how to achieve great things through vision, determination, and collaboration despite the challenges of institutionalization and bureaucracy. It is a fascinating tale about space travel, leadership, and teamwork, written from first-hand experience.

One quality that sets To See Far apart from other books is the depth of understanding, which comes from a deep sense of truthfulness in the material presented. Jim Van Laak does not try to idealize events but shows the realities of what happened with clarity and honesty. In the end, the reader sees how progress has been achieved by the people willing to take responsibility and work together. The author writes with confidence and conviction, making even complex processes comprehensible without resorting to oversimplification. One can apply the lessons learned in space to business and government across many different areas. Few non-fiction books combine such authority, clarity, and relevance. I highly recommend this riveting book!

Jack R. Bialik’s Lost in Time examines a recurring pattern in human history, where knowledge can disappear for centuries before surviving evidence brings it back into view. The book begins by questioning familiar assumptions about when ideas first appeared, using early cataract surgery to show that practices associated with later medicine can have much older histories. That question soon becomes larger as written records vanish with libraries and entire cultures leave only fragments for archaeologists to interpret. The same danger reaches the present, since digital information depends on formats and machines that can become obsolete. Lost in Time then looks toward the future through preservation projects created to keep today's knowledge available for people centuries from now, asking what our own era will leave behind when its technology is gone.

Jack R. Bialik’s Lost in Time is fascinating, and I loved how often it changed what I had accepted as modern. The research is extensive, yet the writing is easy to understand, so discoveries spanning thousands of years feel surprisingly close. What's interesting is how naturally the past connects with questions we are facing now. Learning that the Antikythera Mechanism could track the moon and predict eclipses two thousand years ago changed my view of early technology. That same idea reaches the Rosetta Project, where parallel texts are preserved on a nickel disk for future readers to understand languages that disappear. The belief that preservation is something every generation inherits gives the book a lovely sense of continuity, and it should be on the list of any reader who appreciates time and transformative history. Very highly recommended.
