Romance - Contemporary

Shelby Saville gives us fierce contemporary romance in And They Had a Great Fall. Jake Laurent is filming in Copenhagen for a project that could boost his career, working with a brilliant director. However, Jake struggles to connect with his character and keeps messing up. After months of silence, he calls Kat Green. Kat works in tech, is a single mother to a beautiful daughter, and works fourteen-hour days. Kat is in the running for the new COO of the company. When Jake begs Kat to come to Copenhagen, her initial response is to say no. Kat has too much at stake with the new launch. When work sends her to Denmark, Jake and Kat reconnect and work hard to keep things a secret.
Author Shelby Saville sets the stage perfectly with two main characters leading completely opposite lives. The Copenhagen setting in Denmark is a delight to the senses. The character descriptions are superb, and their energy leaps off the pages. This vibrancy keeps the pace lively, making it easy to enjoy the plot as well. I relished getting to know these characters and observing their interactions with the world and with one another. There is genuine depth and meaning when everything comes together, prompting readers to reflect on their own lives. Due to some explicit language and sexual scenes, this book is only suitable for adult readers. And They Had a Great Fall is a story of love and understanding, and I believe we all could use a little more of that in our daily lives.

Romance - Contemporary

The Game by Eve M. Riley is the fifth book in The Techboys Series. You can read this installment as a standalone romance. The story introduces Anna Talanova, a talented Russian tennis star at the peak of her career, experiencing personal betrayals and the persistent media scrutiny following her breakup with a manipulative Olympian, Arty Maroz. She makes tough choices after finding out that her boyfriend has been cheating on her. Then she meets Adam Miller, a dedicated but struggling electronics startup founder, who finds himself unexpectedly thrust into the limelight when Janus, his humorous and resourceful friend, urges him to attend a prestigious awards event as Anna’s escort. Anna and Adam form a tentative friendship rooted in mutual understanding and shared troubles, both struggling with external threats—Arty’s manipulations and the press’s invasive attention—and doubts about love, success, and trust. Can Anna's new relationship withstand the resurgence of her past?
Eve M. Riley’s storytelling captivated me, starting with the intriguing premise. Anna's reaction to Arty's cheating initially appears to be a well-planned retaliation, but as she becomes more comfortable with Adam, she gradually begins to develop feelings for him. The author balances clever characterization with unexpected plot twists, and I loved the characters; each one is complex. This story effectively explores the demands of Anna's profession and the impact of the press on her life. The detailed setting captures the glamour of red-carpet events, the intensity of competitive sports, and the authenticity of tech startups. I recommend The Game for its gorgeous writing, the well-explored characters, and the clever plotting.

Romance - Contemporary

Hannah Jordan’s spicy romance, For You I’d Break, is a fun, well-developed read. Written in the first-person point-of-view, Rowan returns to the small town where she was raised after finding her husband cheating on her. Unfortunately, the stress of the moment caused her to be in an accident that gave her a severe back injury, and she must seek out physical therapy. Her high-school crush, Cal, is the playboy next door and the town’s best physical therapist. However, his last relationship wanted to take it to the next level and began trolling his online ratings when he called it off. Will Rowan’s love help Cal overcome his past trauma so they can have a forever relationship, or will Rowan have to take her heart back to Washington to stop becoming too attached to him?
Hannah Jordan’s For You I’d Break has fascinating characters with well-developed backstories. The tragic past that unites the males promises to produce engaging books to complete the series. The sexual tension between Cal and Rowan ignites as soon as their paths cross. Rowan pushes through her pain instead of becoming trapped in a victim cycle. Her strength as a character is in her constant desire to move forward with her dreams, no matter what others think and no matter the pain it causes her. Even Cal’s dog, Skye, contributes to the story by being both a comfort to others and allowing humans to give comfort back. The theme of breaking down barriers with love and understanding is evident throughout.

Romance, royals, and second chances – what more could readers want from a modern love story wrapped up in a fairytale? In Nancy Herkness’s second installment of the Royal Caleva series, we travel again to the island nation of Caleva where romance ignites not for a prince but rather for a king. After King Luis discovers that he has a grown daughter, he plans to bring her to Caleva and into his royal family. However, there is one big problem with this plan – his daughter was adopted by an American named Eve, a single mother who is not at all pleased by the turn of events that have complicated her simple life. Soon love blossoms between Eve and the king, but she is an unsuitable choice for a queen, and he has vowed that he will never marry again. Will new love conquer the kIng’s past so that he might finally have a storybook ending?
What sets Royal Caleva: Luis apart from typical romances for me is Nancy Herkness’s ability to create older main characters that hold modern sensibilities but still yearn for old-fashioned passion. Luis, a silver fox with a witty sense of humor, must defy social conventions and traditional ideas about class to find true love. Eve, a divorced veterinarian technician, must overcome her suspicions concerning Luis’s intentions for her and their daughter, Grace. Even the villain of the piece, Odette, a vindictive former lover of the king and a particularly loathsome subject, is also well-drawn. And, of course, what would any proper romance be without a setting that stirs the senses like the exotic locale of Caleva island? I wholeheartedly recommend Royal Caleva: Luis for all women (and men) of a certain age who still believe in the restorative power of love.

Romance - Contemporary

Bourton Bridge by Mia Fox falls into the gentle, sweet, cozy romance category. Luke has spent the last few years piecing his life together after finally managing to escape the clutches of a controlling and abusive father and the loss of his first true love. He works as a chef at his mentor’s high-class French restaurant in Bourton Bridge, in the beautiful English Cotswolds. His boss Elizabeth is more than a mentor to him; she is like a surrogate mother figure. A brash American comes to Bourton Bridge and Luke discovers he is involved in a dubious property deal close to Elizabeth’s restaurant. The deal involves Luke’s father, so he is even more motivated to keep his distance. The American’s wife Jade catches Luke’s eye though and he quickly realizes Jade has a lot of pain inside. As the pair become closer, Luke knows he has to act on his instincts or lose her forever.
Bourton Bridge: Bourton Bridge Series Book 1 is the epitome of an old-fashioned tender romance. Author Mia Fox has chosen a beautiful and poetic setting for her two protagonists to meet and fall in love. Her writing evokes a gentle passion that lovers of this genre will enjoy and embrace. I appreciated the author’s use of a split timeline that allows readers to see and understand the backstory of Luke’s loss, pain, and angst from five years previously. I also enjoyed the peripheral characters, most of whom were quintessentially British, and displayed those characteristics we so often expect of them. Whether it was the spinster sisters who owned the antique shop, the daily visitor to the restaurant who was too shy to ask Elizabeth out, or Luke’s best mate Harry, who would always have his back, the characters all reflect many we have seen on British soap operas such as Emmerdale. This is a relaxing read that will certainly appeal to fans who love this style of romance.

In Victoria Price's Redemption, in a quaint family home in Tennessee, Darren Hartford and Sara Colbert first met during harsh weather conditions. As their renewed romance sailed on, storms threatened to wreck their love. With prejudice and hidden secrets pulling them back, could they overcome love's battles and finally be together?
In Victoria Price's Redemption, vivid imagery engages all five senses, making the reader feel like a character in the book, experiencing everything as the story unfolds. All the characters, even the minor ones, are carefully written with clear motivations—no one is left out, and everyone plays a significant role in the narrative. The tension between Sara and Darren is always palpable, creating a love story that will touch many hearts. This is the kind of book that one can finish in a single sitting, not just because it's possible but because the desire to do so is compelling. The rush is addictive. There are a few plot twists, but the last one is the cherry on top. This book strikes a good balance between heart-tugging drama, romance, and unyielding desire. With its fast pace and excellent storytelling, hopeless romantics will enjoy every page of Redemption.

Eight Years Gone

Romance - Contemporary

Cate Beauman’s Eight Years Gone features the lives of Grace and Jagger. The evening Jagger found Grace’s brother with a gunshot wound altered the trajectory of everyone’s lives. Dr. Steve Evans blamed Jagger for Logan’s death. He told Jagger to stay away from Grace, or he would prevent her from pursuing her career. Jagger disappears, leaving Grace devastated. Eight years later, Grace is working for her aunt at Simplicity Florist and Gifts while freelancing for Travel Magazine. After Jagger’s sudden appearance at Simplicity, Grace refuses to listen to him because of him abandoning her. However, Dr. Evans’ actions have proven to complicate their lives as Jagger and Grace rekindle their love. While going through her mother's journals, Grace discovers something shocking about her parents' relationship.
Cate Beauman gave Grace and Jagger characteristics that were relatable. Their actions on the night of Logan’s death were proof of how impulsive young adults act in response to trauma. Jagger buried his pain by facing danger overseas, while Grace blamed her father and fell into a deep depression. I felt sympathy for Steve because he lost both his children in one night. The alternating viewpoints between Grace and Jagger showed their feelings and thoughts. It was easy to see every moment from each person’s perspective. The transitions were smooth, and I had no issue understanding their motivations. I was engaged by the story’s realistic depiction of the characters’ thoughts and mistakes. The twists in the unpredictable plot added complexity to Jagger and Grace’s relationship. Eight Years Gone will appeal to readers who enjoy second-chance romances built on a life-altering event.

Penelope Auberge, or Pen, is a brilliant financial planner at Twin Cities Financial based in Minnesota. Her boyfriend, Chad, supports her career. But her life takes an unexpected turn. Houston McGregor, Pen's boss, orders her to drop her clients in favor of her male co-worker again. Then it turns out that Chad is married. Devastated, Pen buys a house in Nashville, Tennessee, and moves there to start a new business. Pen gets an invitation to dinner from a friendly young woman named Deanna, whom she met in a grocery store. Socially awkward, Pen dreads dinner with strangers, but she overcomes her anxiety and meets Deanna's handsome brother, Grant. A keen cyclist, Pen surprises herself again and starts riding with Grant's group. While inspiring others with her vision, Pen is vulnerable. Will she be brave enough to banish her past and embrace hope for a better future with Grant? The False Flat by Melissa Collings is for fans of contemporary romance, women's fiction, and family drama.
Melissa Collings's The False Flat is a haunting, character-driven novel. The author impresses with a meticulous study of the main characters. Pen is a strong woman, but her past traumas and losses take their toll. Her character is relatable because of her inner pain and vulnerability. At the same time, Pen is relentless and has an immense sense of purpose. Grant's character is kind and noble with a unique sense of humor that lightens up the emotional intensity of the narrative. For me, these two characters are the most prominent. There is also the wonderful Deanna, a friend everyone dreams of having. Pen and Grant's love story is touching, profound, and fascinating. The author warns us against keeping family secrets, for they may poison our relationships with loved ones. The author examines a woman's role in today's society and questions family patterns that don't allow women to follow their calling.

Romance - Contemporary

Royal Caleva: Gabriel by Nancy Herkness is a contemporary romance that offers readers a story of classic honor, vibrant passion, and hints of danger. The story centers on Gabriel, Duke of Bencalor, who sacrifices his career as a Flamenco guitarist by allowing himself to be kidnapped to save his cousin, the Prince of Caleva. Quinn Pierson, an American computer hacker, is hired to track down Gabriel’s abductors. As she works with Gabriel, their growing attraction becomes undeniable, despite her reservations about their different worlds and her troubled past. Amidst escalating threats from a criminal mastermind and a hidden foe, their love faces both external and internal battles.
Author Nancy Herkness combines the chilling feel of suspense and the excitement and nerves of a new romance, creating a captivating narrative that keeps readers engaged with plenty of emotional depth and tension from cover to cover. The author’s nuanced portrayal of the main characters is packed with intricate narrative details and strong characterization that shows us exactly why they operate in the way that they do. Gabriel and Quinn couldn’t be more different in their upbringing and attitudes, but the pair bring out new, interesting qualities in one another that we see being nurtured through brilliant dialogue exchanges and emotional scenes where they open up about their demons. Herkness’s vivid descriptions and intricate plotting bring the prestige of the royal setting and the grittier elements of high-stakes drama to life, immersing readers in the story’s world and marrying these two concepts together seamlessly. Overall, I would highly recommend Royal Caleva: Gabriel to fans of complex, multi-dimensional tales and contemporary romance readers everywhere.

Romance - Contemporary

Wesley by Stacy Eaton follows the story of Charlotte Bennett, a single mother who has experienced one too many traumatic events in her life, leaving her with a strong dislike and distrust of strangers. Her daughter Marisol is her whole world, so when she sees a strange man talking to her daughter at the park, she loses it. Tackling the man, she doesn’t give him any time to explain that he is a doctor simply trying to do a check-up after seeing her daughter fall. When things get serious, she realizes she might have made a grave mistake, which might also have led her to the best man she’d ever met.
Wesley by Stacy Eaton is the exact definition of an emotional rollercoaster; it is an intense story with emotional highs and lows all wrapped up in a beautifully concise book. I didn’t think I would enjoy Wesley as much as I did, but every moment hooked me. I was rooting for Charlotte and Wes’ relationship from the start. However, I was pretty angry with Wes when he didn’t allow Charlotte time to explain her side of the story regarding Marisol’s father. The writing style, tone, and pacing are just perfect, and Eaton did an excellent job of picking just the right time to throw a spanner in the works of the main characters' relationship. It made for such an intense tale which thankfully had a happy ending. I highly recommend giving this a read.
