Young Adult - Horror

Screamcatcher: Dream Chasers by Christy J. Breedlove is the second book in the series. Jory Pike knows a thing or two about dreams after she and her friends ended up trapped in a world of nightmares within her dreamcatcher. Ever since they made it back in one piece, Jory and her friends have created The Badlands Paranormal Society with the hope that their new skills will prove profitable and help people who want their homes cleansed. Jory learned the hard way what dreamcatchers are capable of and how dangerous the world within can be, but when she needs to return to the world again, she'll need her worst nightmare to do so and maybe a little help from friends who travel into the world with her. It's all part of the plan until things spiral out of control. To get out, Jory and her friends must navigate between those trapped and the monsters that call that world home.
An exciting follow-up to Christy J. Breedlove's Web World, Screamcatcher takes Jory and her friends back into the nightmare world within the dreamcatcher. Breedlove has created a truly unique world within the dreamcatcher which is reminiscent of Alice going through the looking glass into the mad world of Wonderland. The Web World stems from Native American mythology which is a breath of fresh air and delivers a unique concept of literally stepping into a dreamcatcher. Screamcatcher adds to the greater mythology of the story and of the Web World by delving more into the souls trapped there by their own nightmares and shows details of the world that are beautiful and dangerous. The friends have complex connections between them which add an extra layer to the story with tension and romance through the attraction between Choice and Jory, and the friction between Darcy and Neenah. Their return to the Web World puts them back against the monsters and spirits which push them to new limits and force them to face their own strengths if they're to return home. Breedlove flawlessly weaves humor throughout the action and danger of the Web World via the dialogue and connections between the characters. Screamcatcher is a fun read as Christy J. Breedlove blends together a nice mix of action, humor, mythology, and nightmares.

In The Dead Life, Matthew Sprosty presents an emotion-driven story that could have been taken straight out of the X-Files. It is a mystery that will have readers turning the pages, eager to find what happens next as Alex struggles to remember her past, wondering about her future, and what she has become. Her only attachment to reality is Max, but he harbors a dark secret, and she is not sure he actually cares for her. Her parents fight among themselves, and Alex feels all alone in the world. Young Adult - Horror

Our favorite fake-British accented Chicagoan is back in a gripping new adventure in JB Michaels' The Horde. Bud, Maeve, and Ivy may have bitten off more than they can chew. They thought things were improving after their showdown with the Vestal Virgin, that things would get better. They could not have been more wrong. They had been warned of the growing darkness, the possibility that someone was spearheading this movement. But they had never realized the extent of the issue, that everything they had been doing was simply treating the symptoms. Now it is time to face the disease head-on, the organization responsible for unleashing the evil they had spent their lives battling. But things are never easy, those responsible are protected. To get to the source, you sometimes have to cull the horde, or at least outrun them long enough to survive.
JB Michaels' The Horde is book 6 in the Chronicles of the Order Series. I have had the pleasure of reading some of the other books in this series and I can honestly say the books keep getting better, not only through the plot and character evolution but as the author hones their own skill. I loved Bud's character from the moment he first appeared on the page; he is amusing, brilliant, and intelligent as well as being perfectly balanced and complemented by those he keeps company with. The characters are bursting with personality and flair. Careful scene-setting and plot advancement lead to a heightened sense of tension throughout the story's unfolding while action, humor, drama, and danger drive the fast-paced plot forward, hooking the reader right from the start as wave after wave of danger is placed in our characters' paths. Can they survive the horde, or is the world they know destined to fall to evil?

Exciting and action-packed, Feasters: An Apocalyptic Tale by Solomon Petchers is the perfect horror story for YA readers. The plight of the courageous adolescent characters captures the imagination from the very start. The engaging plot and suspenseful storyline contain life-threatening scenes filled with zombies and immoral villains that keep the reader on the edge of their seat. The backdrop of an urban neighborhood is the ideal setting to increase the horror, intensity, and realism of the protagonists' dire circumstances. Dramatic and engaging, it is a thrilling tale that is certain to delight everyone from young adults upward, especially those who enjoy apocalyptic urban fantasies.

Young Adult - Horror

Susan McCauley’s The Devil’s Tree is a terrifying tale that follows Kaitlyn and Dylan. Despite her misgivings and general disbelief in the supernatural, Kaitlyn was convinced to go on an adventure with her boyfriend Hunter and friends Dylan and Keisha. Unfortunately for the group, there are things better left unknown and this cost them the lives of two of their friends. But even death is not the end as both Dylan and Kaitlyn were haunted by their friends' spirits begging for help. This story is not just a cautionary tale about respecting unseen forces but also tackles the grim reality a lot of youngsters have to face daily. It is also about facing one’s fears. The Devil’s Tree is a gripping page-turner that will surely capture the reader’s imagination!
I loved The Devil’s Tree by Susan McCauley! It’s not just a horror story but also about some social issues that still exist even to this day. Kaitlyn's and Dylan’s characters are not the typical shallow teenagers in horror flicks but have depth and complexities. I’m sure a lot of people will be able to relate to their struggles. This story is ripe with history and terrifying encounters with the supernatural. In this modern world, it is easy to ignore older people’s stories as superstition, but The Devil’s Tree will make you wonder where we go when we die. Just don’t make the mistake I made of reading this at night! It’s a page-turner that I finished in one sitting but it resulted in a sleepless night. Horror fans will definitely love this one!

Young Adult - Horror

“It had all started with my blood and this necklace, and now I would end it.” In Something New by Andrea Murray, 17-year-old Miriam ‘Ria’ Gabriel receives a pendant from a mysterious old woman at an estate sale. From that point on, her normal, orderly and studious life changes. Strange things start to happen; her old music box starts working again and the family dog, Cain, seems to be agitated with her. Worst, Ria dreams about a girl with haunting blue eyes and a painful past, begging to be set free. But is the girl truly a tormented, lost soul? As Ria gradually loses control, her health and grades suffer, and her relationships with her best friend and her family are affected. What will she do?
Andrea Murray's Something New is highly engaging from start to finish. The prose and characterization are solid. Ria is easy to root for as her strange predicament begins from the moment the mysterious pendant is clasped around her neck. Her confusion, fear, and anger easily resonate through the pages. The teen’s determination to take back control of her life and solve the problem herself is admirable although unwise and dangerous. Luckily, she literally comes to her senses and accepts help from her friend Rachel and big brother Jake. The messages of family, trust, friendship, bravery, persistence, and faith are deftly incorporated and readers can easily identify with these. Even though there's no obvious hint, the epilogue shows that the story could continue. This a great paranormal tale from Murray and I look forward to reading more of her work in this genre.

Young Adult - Horror

When her friend places a dream catcher over her bed to bring an end to her nightly terrors, an eighteen-year-old girl and her friends are pulled into a world where bad dreams are confined in the thrilling young adult novel, Screamcatcher: Webworld by Christy J. Breedlove. Every night since Jory's parents died, she experiences nightmares relating to their accident. Attempting to help her, Jory's friend Choice buys an ancient dream catcher and arranges it over her bed. Darcy and Lander join Choice at Jory's for a night of games and movies. Because of over drinking and the onslaught of a storm, Lander and Choice sleep over on the bedroom floor. During the intensity of the storm, they are all jolted awake by a bolt of light searing through the room and exploding the dream catcher. Strangely, the brilliant light created an electromagnetic pulse, damaging the city's electricity, batteries, and vehicles. When the teens step outside, they are shocked to find all the buildings boarded up, and the town deserted. There is no one else around, other than a group of vigilantes wanting to kill them. Horrified to discover they are in some kind of altered reality, Jory and Choice lead them through terrifying landscapes and monsters, including werewolves, thunderbirds, and dinosaurs to find an exit back to their world. Will Darcy, Lander, Choice, and Jory ever find their way out of the web? Or will they spend the rest of their lives in the nightmare realm?
Native American myths and legends come alive in the extraordinary shiver-inducing upper YA adventure, Screamcatcher: Webworld by Christy J. Breedlove. The journey the characters experience is captivating, and it is inspiring to witness the conflicts they face and how each of them grows and matures. The Native American elements of the story are intriguing, and I was impressed with how well they were woven into the plot. I enjoyed every aspect of the book, and am looking forward to reading more of Ms. Breedlove's Screamcatcher novels. I highly recommend it to everyone who loves science fiction novels with plucky characters and mythical creatures based on legend. Because there is some strong language and a bit of alcohol use, the book is probably more suitable for young adult readers and above.

Young Adult - Horror

The Dhampir Dimension: Stigmata is a work of dark paranormal fiction by author Viktoria Alukard. Set in the erotic horror vampire genre, this tale takes place in Bucharest after central character Regina seeks a new start in her troubled life. Before she can even settle, strange prophecies come to her about the presence of a new man in her life, the police detective Enttu Tepes. But Enttu is more than just a handsome, blond stranger. He is one of the dhampir, a vampire who has lost a great deal in his long life, including a wife who resembles Regina. Enter Narciso on the scene, another vampire with a taste for vengeance, and what follows is a tense and thrilling adventure bursting with blood.
For fans of this particular genre, Viktoria Alukard has created a lavish and visceral world for her readers to delve into and enjoy. Though the graphic nature of the book won’t be for everyone, for those who appreciate accurate violence, terrifying demons and gruesome murders, The Dhampir Dimension: Stigmata offers a truly thrilling experience. Enttu begins as an enjoyably typical tortured soul, but when his relationship with Regina develops we get to see much more of a true characterization, which was really satisfying. I particularly enjoyed Narciso’s brand of pure evil violence, and the atmospheric settings that Alukard crafts are beautifully dark but also elegant. I also really appreciated the fact that the story unfolded in Bucharest rather than the shiny city streets of America. Overall, a highly enjoyable read.

Young Adult - Horror

A beautifully written fantasy with an international setting, King of the Nine Hells by Dean Klein is a riveting story that will find a comfortable home with readers who enjoy well-crafted stories of dark magic and fascinating characters. It begins in the Dark Ages, with a grave-digger who works on the moors late at night to assemble a grotesque book. His work done, he uses the cursed book to establish himself as head of one of the strongest families known in Scotland. Fifteen hundred years later, a merchant steals this book, without knowing what it really contains, and the book eventually finds itself in the hands of an Oxford University professor who has a deep knowledge of occult practices. It takes little time for Dr. Peter Ashford to realize that the book is deadly. Making a firm resolution to destroy it, he discovers, to his utter stupefaction, that the book is missing. Follow him in a dangerous adventure in search of a possessed book that has the power to destroy the whole of humankind, a book that is linked to Hell.
The story is deftly written and as well as the sophisticated characters, readers encounter a powerful character in the ancient book itself, a book from Hell with wonderful powers. It can hear those who speak in a room, knows who speaks, and has the power to grant the wishes of anyone. Ancient castles, elements of the Dark Ages, quirky characters, and unspeakable horrors are what readers will find in these pages. It is dark and gripping, yet you won’t be able to let go. King of the Nine Hells cast a spell on me and I found myself reading from page to page. Peter Ashford is a great character and the reader wants to know what happens to him from the moment the book gets into his hands. I kept on wondering if he will retrieve it, if he can stay alive long enough to destroy it, and what would he need to destroy the book. King of the Nine Hells by Dean Klein is a great achievement, pulsating and utterly engrossing.
