Young Adult - Sci-Fi

The Fourth Piece (Order's Last Play, Book 1) by E. Ardell is a science fiction tale. Lyle, Lawrie, and Devon are three brothers who find another brother, Evan, dying. All four are the chosen ones, chosen by Order, an alien goddess. Devon, Lyle, and Lawrie are half-alien - Vulattos - but, because they can get away with looking human, they have been popular. That comes to an end one night at a party when the three brothers have a combined vision of their fourth brother dying off-world unless they intervene. They don’t remember Evan very much, but he is their brother and they can’t let him die. In trying to save him, the three brothers put themselves in danger. They also inherit a destiny, one that hasn’t been kind to their predecessors. In a story set in 2022, the four brothers have the power to determine what will be left when the gods tire of the game.
The Fourth Piece (Order's Last Play, Book 1) by E. Ardell was something different. Written in the first person, each chapter rotates with a different brother doing the narrating. I found this a little confusing to begin with, but soon got into the swing of it. The character development is good, allowing a reader to meet the brothers and learn about them and their backgrounds, laying the groundwork for the rest of the story. The plot was detailed and complex, which I found made it a little difficult to keep up with, but not so much that it spoiled my enjoyment of the book. It will be interesting to read book 2, to see where the author takes the story next.

Young Adult - Social Issues

The Greenlee Project by Amanda thrasher is a brilliantly written story about a selected few students who are considered to be the B.P. (Beautiful People) who truly believe that it is they who run the high school that they attend in today's electronic society. The story begins with Greenlee Granger, a fourteen-year-old girl who is going through a huge social dilemma at school. After her father drops her off at school, instead of going inside, she decides to take a long ride on a public bus. Time doesn't seem to exist until she finally gets let off, God knows where, in a town 20 miles away. She finally gets back to reality and calls her father to pick her up.
From here the story unfolds as you get to know her circle of friends and social status, as well as the cute new boy that just transferred to her school. Clay joins the football team because he was the star quarterback where he came from. Now he has to prove himself and make the team. When it comes time for him to be initiated, he is allowed to decide the ritual, and sets out to make it a memorable one, so he proposes "The Greenlee Project." The only people that can know about the initiation are his new team mates. That is until queen bee, Laurel, sets her sights on Clay as well.
Amanda Thrasher does a superb job of describing the intense situations that arise when the elite crowd's attention is threatened by those that they feel are beneath them. Ms. Thrasher also delivers the pressures that the B.P. experience to maintain their status quo. All of her characters are well developed and, by the end of this powerful story, Amanda adds some unexpected surprises that really put a twist in the outcome. The Greenlee Project is an eye opening, powerfully written book that I highly recommend for teenagers, faculty, and parents. Well done!

Christian - Devotion/Study

The Purity Driven Life: God's Call to Character and Integrity by Mike Maxwell is a beautiful addition to inspirational Christian literature, a reminder of God’s invitation to everyone to live in His image by embracing a life of purity. Readers will be immediately attracted to the author’s deep sense of humility, which comes across in the opening pages of the book as he shares his personal journey towards a life of purity, a journey filled with challenges. There are very important and powerful points that come across in this book: 1) a life of purity is God’s design for every man and woman; 2) living in purity doesn’t come easily; 3) God’s grace gives us the strength to live a life that conforms to His will.
The author makes references to relevant scriptures that highlight the theme of purity, explore the human psychology about purity, and propose a path that readers can travel to embrace union with God by living chaste lives. I loved how the author explains the trap into which most people — including myself — are lured, the erroneous logic that purity is impossible and that God’s grace saved us so we don’t need to do anything. Just as Rainer Maria Rilke points out in Letters to a Young Poet: that something is difficult is enough reason for us to do it. Living according to God’s will isn’t easy, and that is where His grace becomes powerful, enabling us to muster the strength and courage to live the values of our calling to a life of grace. This is a powerful message to a world that idolizes sex and carnal sins, a well-written book that comes across as a tool of inner liberation for many of us. You should read The Purity Driven Life: God's Call to Character and Integrity by Mike Maxwell if you want your encounter with Jesus to be a meaningful and fulfilling one.

Christian - Fantasy/Sci-Fi

I read the first book in this series. I loved it and waited eagerly to see how the story would unfold. I was a little worried that maybe the tale would lose the exciting pace or that things might get bogged down and become boring. That absolutely did not happen. The second book of The Stonegate Series by Harry James Fox is called The False Prophet and it picks up a few weeks after the first book ends. You don’t have to read the first book to understand and enjoy the second book, but I recommend it. Reading that first story will add texture and details to not only the military campaign, but also Donald’s romantic situation. Don’t get me wrong; you still know what’s going on in the second book if you haven’t read the first book, but if you have read it, everything has a deeper texture and urgency.
Harry James Fox has done it again. He plunges us into a world that has struggled back from disaster and is on the brink of recovery. I like the values displayed in this post-disaster America. These are values and struggles I can relate to. I like how Harry James Fox shows us how one man with twisted dreams and ambitions can threaten a whole civilization. As depressing as that can be, it is also a chance for good people, people of faith, to stand up and become heroes. The writing in The False Prophet is clear and concise. The action is vividly and accurately portrayed, and there is a variety of characters, both good and bad. I like this world. I like Don. This is a series that Christians and other fans of action/adventure can get into.

Christian - Fantasy/Sci-Fi

Gawain and the Green Knight: Temptation Karma Honor by Stefan Emunds is a brilliant rendition of the beautiful tale of Sir Gawain’s destiny, a fiery knight with a single purpose in mind; to attain honor. Courageous and bent on becoming memorable as a noble knight, Sir Gawain of King Arthur’s Round Table accepts a beheading challenge from the mysterious Green Knight and sets out on an odyssey that is shrouded in mystery. Can he face the challenges before him and win the battles he has to fight? Can he conquer the temptations of lust and fame and power, and keep a pure heart worthy of a knight? This is a tale fraught with mystery, religious themes, loyalty, and an endearing sense of purpose.
There is a pervading sense of mystery that permeates every layer of this story and Stefan Emunds has done a great job to make the reader feel it. The character of Gawain comes out beautifully throughout the story and readers will love him, because he represents the spiritual battle that many of us have to fight. This is both a spiritual and a symbolic story with many lessons for the reader. The writing is poetic, at times evocative, and hugely accessible. I loved the way the author used suspense and conflict throughout the story. The mystery surrounding the Green Knight is beautiful created to keep the reader’s curiosity on the alert. Gawain and the Green Knight: Temptation Karma Honor is engaging, entertaining, and satisfying in many ways.

Christian - Fiction

The Girl Who Could Read Hearts by Sherry Maysonave is an inspirational story that vividly treats the themes of intuition, religion, God, love, and many others. The book tells the story of a girl with the extraordinary gift of seeing what most ordinary people do not see, the gift of a sharpened perception, and one that troubles her as well as her parents. What does it mean to see colors in the hearts of others? Could she be living within the bounds of the normal or does her experience border on insanity? Such are the questions that disturb Kate Kindrick and her family, but there is worse than that, and can she bear it all in her young heart?
Sherry Maysonave is a very skilled author and her work explores one of the challenging issues that many people face in contemporary society: the loneliness of the gifted person. The story is well written and there is a powerful psychological depth that will haunt many readers. But the story is highly inspirational, one of those tales that will encourage readers to have the courage to stand out, to accept their gifts, and to embrace who they really are. The author’s tone is gentle and compassionate, and her voice rings through with clarity and authority. The highly accessible writing is punctuated by vivid descriptions and colorful dialogue. The author knows how to lead readers into the mind of her protagonist and allow them to connect intimately with her. The Girl Who Could Read Hearts is a story of faith, a powerful defense for those who dare to follow the light they see within them. A highly recommended read!

To Fear The Dawn

Christian - Fiction

The battle between good and evil is a common occurrence in our world. Sean Young clearly showed the battle between good and evil in To Fear The Dawn, with the good side comprising Nicholas Gallagher (the computer genius and billionaire), Decklin Kanabas (the controversial priest), and Lajé Jaffa (the last of her kind), with Hypatia's children representing the evil side (prominent men and women who had infiltrated all sectors in a bid to carry out their global conspiracy and control the world). Nicholas finds an ally and trusted friend in Decklin Kanabas after he escaped from prison because his life was being threatened by the same people who tried to frame him. The trio ( Nicholas, Decklin and Lajé) eventually become bound together by their common interest, which is to protect themselves from Hypatia's children and bring them down. Evil seems to be gaining ground; how long can good hold out?
To Fear The Dawn makes you feel as if you are watching an exciting movie; it is action-packed, interesting and suspenseful. The idea of an imminent danger also makes you feel as if you are right alongside the characters and, just like them, you don't know exactly what you are up against. To Fear The Dawn caught my attention from the cover, which is bold and fierce, and it sustained my attention till the end. I loved the action, the breath-taking suspense coupled with betrayal, and I was really intrigued by Decklin Kanabas' character, his abilities, intelligence, cunning and skill.

The Field Trip

Christian - Fiction

There is very little that is as it appears to be in The Field Trip, making for a twisting and turning plot that pulls you in and doesn’t let go until the last word of the book. There are many characters in The Field Trip that are necessary to the suspense, but the main character is Chasen Derrick and his most annoying student, Eddie. Chasen is currently working at the Dysart Academy, receiving an unusually large salary that he appreciates but never questions. He halfheartedly agrees to take a class on a field trip to England, and he and the students set off to enjoy their sightseeing in London. The trip is off to a good start until they become bystanders in a fire and then everything is turned upside down and sideways. As they plan to board the bus to the next spot in Oxford, two students are missing and Chasen hurries off to find them. The students load onto the bus and are driven away without their teacher. Chasen then finds himself and Eddie (the missing student) stranded and they soon are being accused of terrible deeds. The two find themselves being the hunted and use all of their strength, wits and knowledge to move from scary situation to life threatening situation. No one is whom they think and everyone they come across may or may not be a friend or the enemy.
The Field Trip kept me up long past my bedtime and had me ignoring my daytime chores. I can honestly say that this is the best Christian fiction suspenseful book I have read in, well, forever. Greg Elsasser is brilliant in his combining of God, mystery, intrigue and fantastic characters. He brings in religion without it becoming overwhelming; suspense permeated throughout the story and believability was top notch. I was never 100% certain if it was all really fiction or if perhaps there was some truth in it; that is how well the story was presented. Please do not pass this one up; it is sooooo good.

Murder for the Time Being

Christian - Fiction

Murder for the Time Being by Joanie Bruce is a fictional mystery suspense novel with a bit of romance that would appeal most to a mixed audience of young adults and adults who enjoy clean reads with no explicit language, sexual situations, or graphic violence. Lexi Wynn is a young computer expert who is terrified for her life after a bank robbery, knowing that someone is after her. Her life is heading downwards fast, with her only hope hinging on her computer skills being enough to help her bring a killer to light, but a car collision with handsome Drew Sheffield might just be enough to turn her life around. Drew Sheffield walks away from the collision with Lexi Wynn lingering in his mind, so when he sees the chance to help her, he seizes it with both hands. Amidst danger and mystery, will these two be able to seize the moment and allow their love to blossom or will it all go down the drain?
Murder for the Time Being by Joanie Bruce has a very vivid cover that hinted at the inner plot of the book without giving anything away; I really liked that Lexi was on the cover as it gave me a clear picture of what she looked like. I only wish Drew could have been on it as well. I personally felt that the author did a good job of balancing the elements of the plot with the attraction between Lexi and Drew. Lexi quickly became my favorite character as she had a sassy personality, good morals, and was willing to fight back instead of giving up. Overall, it was very pleasurable to read a book that had an enjoyable plot, with action that was not bogged down with needless violence and gore!

“How often in our lives are we willing to believe in the lies despite the evidence telling us otherwise?” says Crista Crawford in The Full Armor of God: Are You Sure You Got Dressed Today? IRS sent you an audit letter, you just got into an auto accident and your basement just got flooded and it's only Tuesday. While these things can be considered a natural part of life, they are also attacks. These attacks are called spiritual warfare. Spiritual warfare attacks us at the core. Satan has designed these attacks to throw us off course and to usher us away from God. It has been said that we all experience life, but God looks at the 90% of how we handle things. Crista Crawford shares with us how to fight in her latest book, The Full Armor of God: Are You Sure You Got Dressed Today? It was her own life experiences and challenges that helped to shape her into the woman of God that she is today. Crista Crawford tells us in The Full Armor of God that when you fight, fight to win by putting on the full armor of God.
We are living in a fallen world and The Full Armor of God is one of those books to add to your repertoire to equip you for battle. Everywhere you look, from our personal lives and the weather to our government, you will see it was just as the Bible predicted. But according to Ephesians 6:11-18, we must put on the “full armor” of God while we pray continually in the Spirit because our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against rulers of the darkness and unknown things. How are you fighting? Are you going out naked? Are you going out unprepared? Put on some clothes, but don't go out with just anything on; make sure that your body, feet, mind and heart are protected. Gird yourself with prayer to prepare for each day. If you ever feel alone in your battle, take The Full Armor of God: Are You Sure You Got Dressed Today? by Crista Crawford along with you as a companion.
