Fiction - Humor/Comedy

Randi M. Sherman’s The Lobby lets readers be a fly on the wall at the prestigious Shipley Hotel in San Francisco. The many intertwined stories take place over 24 hours from 4:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. the next day. The Shipley is hosting both a reunion and a large company conference so there are plenty of interesting individuals, meetings, and possible scandals around every corner. Then there are the tourists: a regimented, bossy husband with his wife who just wants to enjoy her vacation; a couple on their 30th anniversary who are treated to an impromptu wedding; and parents in town dreading their visit with their daughter and her atrocious family. Other fascinating characters also include Oscar Pasternak, a retired actor and longtime resident of the hotel’s upper floors, Mrs. “Bunnie” Rothman who is staying in a six-room suite while her house is under renovations and her husband is away, and a pair of adulterous couples. Add to this mix the many hotel employees including front desk workers, security personnel, the gift shop attendant, the floor polisher, and the florist.
All of these characters and stories equal one highly entertaining book. I enjoyed every moment of The Lobby and was quickly immersed in each of Randi M. Sherman’s characters. I was worried that there would be too many story lines to keep up with, but Sherman paints such vivid pictures and created such intriguing characters that I felt like I was there in the lobby experiencing it all. This book made me laugh, cry and cringe at the various behaviors, chance encounters, and hilarious situations. It was fun to read and now I want to quit my job and go work at the Shipley Hotel! I highly recommend this book!

Fiction - Humor/Comedy

When stay-at-home mother Holly exhausts a seemingly never-ending collection of self-help manuals, she is content to spend her days indulging in long, gossipy, alcohol-infused lunches with her gang of gal pal friends. Every day brings the same challenges and anticlimactic events. That is until she discovers a new challenge. This one makes little to no sense to her, but she is intrigued with the candid ridiculousness of it all. Holly’s quest to find her inner goddess becomes an obsession. One that takes her directly out of her comfort zone while simultaneously offering an irresistible challenge. After committing to a year-long workbook activity of releasing herself from the hold of a rather decadent and shallow lifestyle, Holly follows the rules of the Goddess handbook to reach the surprising and unexpected satisfaction of being a woman of substance.
As the main character in Michelle Colston’s novel, The Undiscovered Goddess, journeys to discover the person she is meant to be, this reviewer greedily devoured each and every word. It is rare to find a story that so completely encompasses all of the positive qualities of the perfect read. Colston’s dialogue is funny, blatantly raw, and unabashedly honest. This is a novel to be read and read again, and to be shared with every woman in search of the key to self-happiness. I love, love, love this book. It hits so many key elements in every woman's spiritual journey. I look forward to purchasing multiple copies to share with the many undiscovered goddesses in my life. I can see myself working through the “workbook” in my own attempt at personal acceptance.

Wow! Just, wow! How's that for a review? Well, it's definitely the way I felt about The Second Diary, the absolutely fabulous work by author Ciara Threadgoode. This book will have its readers obsessively turning the pages from the very first words all the way through to the very last, and will have them laughing and even wiping away tears at times. Follow the story of an unexpected find, that of the second, secret diary of one Dorothy Rose Nolte Hughes, discovered by her granddaughter Cherry after Dorothy had passed away. While her first diary contained the mundane details of her life, those that many would expect to find in the diary of an older woman, this one contained the real dirt and this spunky woman's true thoughts about what was going on around her, often with hilarious results!
I loved The Second Diary. Loved. It. How's that for a review? I loved its fun premise, the characters detailed so well and lovingly by author Ciara Threadgoode, and the investigation of one family's life over the course of two generations. I have never read a book quite like this one, and since I am a prolific readers, that is truly saying a great deal. Any reader who loves a fun read of fiction, a story about families, or just a story with a great deal of heart should definitely read this book! I highly recommend The Second Diary, and I absolutely look forward to reading more from the very talented author, Ciara Threadgoode, as soon as I possibly can!

Fiction - Inspirational

The Runaway Prophet by Michele Chynoweth is an inspiring story that will entertain and enlighten readers. What happens when a man tries to run away from his calling to embrace the path of justice? Rory Justice is a divorced man who only cares about doing his job and living a normal, upright life. Upon his deathbed, his father, an ex-FBI agent, makes an unusual request, asking Rory to deliver a package to a sheriff in Las Vegas. He finds out the letter is a warning about the horrific plan of terrorists to destroy the entire city. Instead of delivering the letter as expected, Rory decides to take the easy way out and post it. What happens when he tries to run away is what will blow the reader’s mind.
Michele Chynoweth is a master at creating powerful conflicts and the kind of suspense that makes the read even more gripping. The use of a definite deadline to solve the problem and stop the bad guys creates a lot of excitement and anticipation, and readers will want to know if the heroes can succeed before time runs out. The Runaway Prophet is well-written and the plot is more than perfect. You’ll never know what will happen next, no matter how hard you guess. The transformation that takes place in Rory, from being an indifferent man to working with a team of investigators and law officers, and most importantly to being capable of falling in love with Susan McAfree, is interesting. The author knows how to inspire readers by writing about her religious convictions without being pushy and boring. This is a book I’ll recommend to everyone looking for something thrilling and thought-provoking.

Wow! That's what I thought when I finished reading the delightful story, The Heavenly Grille Cafe, by author J.T. Livingston. Follow the story of Amanda Turner, a young woman who definitely needs a change of pace. She's lost her parents, home and job, all in a very short period of time, and decides to start anew. Not really sure where she's headed or where she'll end up, she finds herself stopping at a little restaurant that's off the beaten track, the titular "The Heavenly Grille Cafe." When she finds that the place is run by three angels, Max, Bertie and Doug, and she also meets Kris, another young woman who is struggling in her own right, Amanda's life is changed forever.
I so enjoyed The Heavenly Grille Cafe. Author J.T. Livingston has a written a completely unique story with characters that her readers will connect with, relate to, care about and continue to think of long after the book is done. If that isn't a hallmark of a great author, I don't know what is. Once I started reading, I couldn't put this lovely story down. In fact, the main piece of advice that I have for readers, besides being sure to read this book, would be to set aside enough time to read it from start to finish, you'll love it that much. Any reader who enjoys a sweet story with a strong Christian message will love The Heavenly Grille Cafe. I am so pleased to recommend this book, and I am excited to read more from the very entertaining and highly promising author, J.T. Livingston, as soon as possible!

Digger Cartwright welcomes you to the world of online dating in The House of Dark Shadows. On the outside, it appears that Alex Rommel has everything. He has the best of everything, but on the inside, he is just a lonely man. When he meets an old friend, he finds out that his old buddy found love on the internet and is blissful to say the least. Envious and desperate to let go of the past and lost love, Alex ventures into the world of online dating to see what it has in store for him.
The murky world of internet dating brings Hope in his life. Hope is a French journalist and just about everything he ever desired. But she has her own secrets and her past. It appears that something sinister is coming towards him from all directions. His mother is constantly badgering him, his lusting secretary is getting on his nerves, his business is getting more demanding, and Hope is making him suspicious. There are shadows all around him and he cannot decipher if any of them are friendly or all of them are enemies. Can he rescue himself before all is lost and he is destroyed?
Since I started reading this novel, I have been thinking of a word to describe Alex Rommel. The only word I find suitable enough is jaded. The House of Dark Shadows is an amazing psychological thriller and it entices the reader from the get go. The storyline is good and very entertaining. Alex is a little tough to love, but I think that is just a part of his character. Nonetheless the novel was good and deserves to be read again and again.

Fast paced, fun, this is a really good mystery and suspense novel that everyone will love. The story is really cool and you cannot predict what will happen next. Stories from the Age of Distraction: The Island, Volume 1 is a contemporary literary fiction novel written by Patricia M. Mahon. After growing up to the sound of her author mother's typing on her old IBM and pursuing graduate studies in literature, Morgan Byrnes is now a writer herself, though not exactly as she had intended. She's 35 and works as a corporate speechwriter by day. By night, she still harbors the literary spark which she shares with her best friend, Percy Chadwick. One night, she types a few lines on her Facebook page and is pleased when she receives his response, a continuation of her story prompt. Then she's amazed to see more responses scrolling down her screen and, with each response, her story grows and evolves and becomes alive. The posters are people she's never been in contact with, and they're from all over the world. It's an exciting concept, seeing how they all somehow transcended the impersonal mode of the digital age and became part of that ancient tradition of story-telling. And with that spark of inspiration, Morgan comes up with a plan.
Patricia M. Mahon's contemporary literary fiction work, Stories from the Age of Distraction: The Island, Volume 1, is the stuff of dreams. Her heroes, Morgan and Percy, set out to reclaim oral traditions by venturing into the digital domain. Their quest is an ambitious one, and the only open door is through a former roommate of her brother. I had a marvelous time following these otherworldly dreamers as they reach out into the ether and find kindred spirits -- hundreds of them. The stories that evolve are marvelous and work perfectly with the continuing saga of Morgan and Percy. This work within a work is beautifully scripted with characters who quickly seem like friends and whose quest becomes a universal one. Stories from the Age of Distraction: The Island, Volume 1 is edgy, original and very compelling. It's most highly recommended.

Fiction - Military

Hold Back The Sun (US Asiatic Fleet vs. Japan) by Warren Bell is a military fiction novel that takes place in 1942. This book will appeal most to an audience made up primarily of adults who enjoy military fiction, though some of the more mature young adults who enjoy military fiction would also find it enjoyable. Hold Back The Sun follows Frank Rhea, Jack Sewell, and Captain Garret Laterveer, as well as the women that steal their hearts, Dr. Cinta van Wely, Pamela Mallory, and Catherine van Zweden. Hold Back The Sun follows these brave men and women during the war as their own action impacts on the course of the novel.
Hold Back The Sun by Warren Bell was an intriguing read for me as it followed so many different main characters, three men and three women. I really liked the fact that the author gave the women real personalities that made them strong and did not just label them as secondary characters. The writing style Warren Bell used in Hold Back The Sun was perfect for this military fiction novel. I found that it truly pulled me into not only the plot line, but also the characters as I began to feel for them as people. I really hope that Warren Bell continues to write military fiction!

Fiction - Military

The Final Salute is a military fiction by Kathleen Rodgers. Colonel Tuck Westerfield, a fighter pilot at Beauregard Air Force base who flew in the Gulf war, mourns the death of his friend and colleague. His unhappiness rises after catching his Commanding Officer cheating with another officer, as his boss constantly threatens him. Gina, Tuck’s wife, worries about his moodiness, which the neighbour’s dog provokes; and Michelle, her rebellious, gothic-attired stepdaughter who visits. Tuck travels down Memory Lane, reliving his childhood while remembering his friends and colleagues who died courageously, and wonders why life deals such blows. He is assigned to the Middle East after Iraq invades Kuwait and his experiences there make him more determined to consider adjustments to his life if he survives.
Kathleen Rodgers has created an engrossing military fiction appropriately called The Final Salute. She gives a very realistic account of what life is like in the air force, both from those who serve and from their family members’ point of view. It is an intriguing story that has so many emotions as the diverse characters express their joys, fears, pains and sadness in different ways. The author also demonstrated quite nicely how a few military careers may be tarnished and how some scandals or other conflicts are quickly covered up. The Final Salute is a book I did not want to put down, and I think Kathleen Rodgers writes descriptively and with compassion. She shows readers another side of military life in an original and interesting format.
