Non-Fiction - Memoir

Shattered by the Wars: But Sustained by Love by Hi-Dong Chai is the story a Korean boy tells in his own words of his childhood at the time of World War II, the Korean War, communism and associated turbulence. The disturbances in his life are further accentuated by his religious background and the constant interference by the authorities. To compound their miseries further, Dong’s brother, the smartest and the brightest one in the family, decides to become a communist. One day Dong finds his father being abducted. Both mother and son are forced to abandon their home. Added to this is the uncertainty of the future. Dong’s excitement at finding a job for himself, though non-paying, as a fish cleaner, searching for his mother and finally reuniting with her, teaching Korean to an American boy, and many other incidents are movingly narrated.
Shattered by the Wars: But Sustained by Love by Hi-Dong Chai is a story celebrating the hope of the future. The indomitable human spirit of the mother and her son will leave a long lasting impression on the reader. The dangers of totalitarian thinking, supported by whatever form of government, can be identified in the events and occurrences described in this book; all those who read this will realize that anyone could have been in Hi-Dong’s position. The narration and the honest rendition of events are quite absorbing. I found it difficult to put down the book.

The Path to Job Search Success
A Neuroscientific Approach to Interviewing, Negotiating and Networking

Non-Fiction - Occupational

The Path to Job Search Success by Tom Payne begins with an interesting observation that humans are psychologically wired to move in the wrong direction down the job-search path. Tom Payne therefore emphasizes the need to be well prepared with the correct approach at all times. In an interview, how well one presents one's achievements matters more than the achievements themselves. It is also essential that we give due allowance to the human weakness of having a stubborn faith in the meaningfulness of our achievements and a disregard for our failures. Especially in this, the importance of body language and the necessity to assume a high power pose cannot be over-emphasized.
Also, mastering the subconscious speech of non-verbal behavior is one of the most important job search tasks. One should be able to articulate one's strength in a compelling way, ie. create a sentence that contains the strengths most relevant to the hiring organization. Tom rates some questions in an interview as suicide questions. A few examples are: What are your weaknesses, Tell me about your worst boss etc, and he discusses techniques for answering these as well. Tom completes the book with the most crucial advice: “Always be positive. Always! And no excuses. Ever”
The Path to Job Search Success by Tom Payne is in fact a practical manual to prepare for any interview. Wise suggestions, inspiring real life stories and helpful tips make this book a worthy guide and reference. The book can boast of many new and valuable tips to make one a sure winner.

Non-Fiction - Relationships

The Relationship Protocol: How to Talk, Defuse and Build Healthier Relationships by Debra M. Roberts is a self-help book about how to communicate in relationships that might not be as good as they were, or as good as they could be. It can be a friendship, a love relationship, a work relationship - all are covered in this protocol. The chapters take you through the relationship protocol and its steps in a logical way and illustrate how the RP works by using real life examples.
The Relationship Protocol: How to Talk, Defuse and Build Healthier Relationships by Debra M. Roberts is one of those rare self-help books that combines a good layout with good content. Far too often you only get one of both. You know all those pretty books with worthless content? This is not one of them. I was surprised to see that some things I have recently done with a challenging person in my life are actually the right steps. I was using the relationship protocol without really knowing about it, and I was wondering what I was doing right - because over the last few weeks things did improve a lot. And that was with me only using the steps of the protocol. Now that I have read the book, I gained an even better insight into how relationships work, and how you need to communicate if you truly want to be closer to the people you care about. I would definitely recommend this book to people who have some challenging relationships in their lives, and who would honestly want to work on making them better.

Non-Fiction - Religion/Philosophy

The Rainbow Bridge by Brent Hunter focuses on religion in today's society. Brent believes that every religion is ultimately reaching for the same goal. He also gives some excellent advice for finding an inner peace. The author strives to find a middle ground that can connect many, regardless of race or religion. There is a variety of quotes and poems throughout the book which helps readers to understand what Brent is trying to portray. The Rainbow Bridge connects us all and the meditations provided in this book can connect anyone to this bridge. By focusing on things in our own lives, we can change our thoughts and opinions and this in turn will make for a better world.
Brent Hunter has taken a great deal of time preparing this book. The Rainbow Bridge was unlike anything that I had ever read before. The clever way in which the author demonstrated the points made the reader feel as if they, too, could achieve such goals. If indeed today's society took notice of just a few simple ideas from this inspiring book then the world would be truly a better place. As a reader, I especially liked the poetry since it was not only inspiring but very uplifting. It was as if a huge weight had been lifted from my soul. Some might try and fail at some of the ideas mentioned, but the one thing to cling onto is hope. We all should take note and continue relentlessly on our own journey. The best thing for me was the way in which it brought people together from different backgrounds or religions. The Rainbow Bridge was fantastic and inspirational. I enjoyed it and it certainly gave me a lot to think about.

Non-Fiction - Religion/Philosophy

The Garden of Life is an inspirational non-fiction book written by Todd Michael Putnam. This self-help book is composed of dialogues between the Young Gardener and his neighbor, the Old Man. The two of them discuss their opposing viewpoints on topics such as weeding their gardens, criticizing their neighbors' gardening efforts, dealing with losing their plants in a major storm and picking up the pieces afterward among other topics. Each is a metaphor for life and is followed by Gardening Tips and a focus question for thought. While The Garden of Life is an inspirational book, the author does not espouse any one religious belief system, and the parables contained within are accessible to all.
Todd Michael Putnam's motivational self-help book, The Garden of Life, is a marvelous little handbook on the care and feeding of your inner being. The Young Gardener is never judgmental or harsh when dealing with the Old Man, and his responses are inspirational indeed. From the very first parable on weeding one's Garden of Life, I found myself challenged and intrigued. The Young Gardener's response to the devastation caused by the storm and the loss of his beloved Blossom Tree is marvelous and very moving. There's a lot to think about in this deceptively slim book, and I suspect readers will find themselves pondering long and deeply about some of the wisdom found within -- I know I will be. Simple, yet profound truths are to be found on almost every page of The Garden of Life, and it's most highly recommended.

Non-Fiction - Self Help

Still Standing After All The Tears by Valerie Silveira is a tough but motivational read. The author uses this book to not only share her personal heartbreaking story, but also to empower others to fight and prevail over the “beasts” in their own lives. Silveira defines a “beast” as “that situation, person, attitude or circumstance that has left you lost, defeated, frustrated, angry, hopeless and helpless, or living in paralyzing fear.” The author recounts the painful story of how her own daughter battled a “beast” of drug addiction and bad choices, which ultimately led to her being shot by an ex-boyfriend (who was also a gang member). The author points out that one poor choice can lead to another, and things can escalate fairly quickly. From her own experience with a life-changing ordeal, the author presents readers with nine steps to battling a personal “beast,” whether it be drugs, alcohol, abuse or any other number of debilitating life issues. Silveira advises readers to stand up and fight, put on spiritual armor, change their attitudes, adjust their focus, and make meaning of the madness!
This book was a very motivational and introspective read for me. Valerie Silveira writes with such emotion, conviction, and a can-do attitude. She shows that no matter what you are going through, you can’t just lie down and take it. You must empower yourself to fight back and win against any “beasts” that come into your life. I was really inspired by how the author took such a heartbreaking situation (such as a child spiraling out of control) and used that to build a positive message of strength and support. Highly recommended for anyone going through a life trial.

The Plot To Kill God

Non-Fiction - Social Issues

Our modern world is full of almost as many opinions as there are people to express them. The twenty-first century is truly the age of the individual. This, says Edward F. Mrkvicka, Jr., is the seed of our destruction. Our obsession with self, says Mrkvicka, is distancing us from God in ways we will not be able to fully appreciate until we have passed the point of no return. “We all love the thought of a savior who saves us, but we rebel against the thought of a lord who requires discipleship and obedience. Therein lays the crux of the matter.”
The Plot to Kill God by Edward F. Mrkvicka, Jr. (with Kelly Mrkvicka) presents a point-by-point, scripturally based, impeccably well-rendered case for returning to God, not just a loving, benevolent protector but also as our Lord and master, who commands worship in absolute terms. This, says Mrkvicka, is problematic for free thinkers: “Americans in particular bristle at the thought of being submissive and putting ourselves second. We have rights. No one can tell us what to do, not even God."
Regardless of their religion or personal values, intelligent people the world over appreciate a carefully considered persuasive argument. Edward F. Mrkvicka, Jr.’s argument is compelling and reads with the grace and charm of a country Sunday sermon. There is no lecturing; no fire and brimstone; no trace of sulfur in the charismatic air; instead, there is the quiet, caring, urgent plea of a truly compassionate and God-fearing Christian who will not accept less than God’s eternal promise for his fellow human beings.
Remember who made us. Remember what we are here to do: worship … and obey. Come home.
Edward F. Mrkvicka, Jr.’s The Plot to Kill God offers an earnest, timely treatise for a woebegone and misguided age: “So often in our Christian walk we fail to nod to the power God commands, and lose sight of the true nature of our relationship. We are not His equal and shouldn’t act as if we are. When we do, we relegate God to being as powerless as we are. Conversely, when we obey and worship as commanded, He allows us to share in His power.”
Wonderful tool for reflection and growth.

Do you often feel you are stuck in your life and wish you could make a difference for yourself? Then The 5 Star Points for Success by Jacqueline Oya Thomas might be just the right book for you. In this self-help book, you will learn how you can work on the five different areas that have an influence on your success and happiness. They are: mind, body, spirit, emotions and environment. The book explains why it is important that you work on all five star points, and gives you good instructions on what you can do to make a difference in each area.
I found The 5 Star Points for Success by Jacqueline Oya Thomas to be a really well-balanced book. It is not an incredibly long read, but that is a positive point. Many self-help books just go on and on and on without ever getting to the point. Jacqueline Oya Thomas has found a good balance of mixing her own experiences with helpful advice, and ideas on how the reader can turn their life around. Some readers might be quite surprised about how they need to put effort into something like their environment, when all they want is a better job or the love of their lives. This book shows how the different areas in your life are all tied together, and it does so in a good way. The book is definitely worth a read - either as your first book of that kind or as a quick refresher if you need some motivation to keep on track.

Non-Fiction - Spiritual/Supernatural

The Shining Within Me: Communications from the Afterlife is a spiritualist memoir written by Freddie Rivera. Rivera grew up sensing, hearing and even seeing presences as a young child. At first, he thought that this was something everyone experienced, but later he came to see his gifts as something to be hidden lest people think he was insane. School and later the army were very intense experiences for Rivera as he had to cope with the emotions of his peers as well as his own. It wasn't until Rivera was an adult that he realized that while everyone didn't share his gifts, many people did. He reached out to others cautiously at first, but soon found a warm and supportive community of psychics, mediums and spiritualists. Rivera also discusses how he reconciled his Christian faith with his spiritualistic abilities by acknowledging that those gifts came from God.
Freddie Rivera's spiritualist memoir, The Shining Within Me: Communications from the Afterlife is a fascinating and well-written real-life coming of age story. I especially enjoyed the chapters dealing with his early years in Spanish Harlem and his four years in the army. Rivera shines as he recounts the military experiences he had in Germany, the tropics and Alaska. He also gives a unique and incredibly moving account of his visit to Dachau. Without ever being preachy or didactic, Rivera discusses astral projection, lucid dreaming, evidential mediums (which Rivera is) and the difference between clairvoyance, clairsentience and clairaudience. He doesn't try to convince the reader of his gifts, rather he simply yet eloquently tells stories about his life and about those who he was able to comfort through his readings. I had a marvelous time reading The Shining Within Me: Communications from the Afterlife and learned a lot from it. It's highly recommended.

The Broken Gift

Non-Fiction - Spiritual/Supernatural

“The premise of 'The Broken Gift' is: The rigorous approach of science and a careful and equally rigorous analysis of Genesis produce the same events and timelines for the appearance and early history of humanity.” Author, Daniel Friedmann begins his book by defining Science and Creation. Science is the methodical method of collecting data about the universe and shaping it into concepts and rules that can be verified. Genesis is the first of the five books of law called the Torah. “The Torah is the blueprint of the universe’s and humankind’s existence from a faith-based perspective, drawn from a tradition of oral and written principles.” The author’s theory is that science and scripture should go hand in hand with the same outcomes. The largest discrepancy between science and scripture is the timeline. While Genesis states that creation took 6 days, while science declares it took billions of years. There is also the question of whether life evolved. Among the things covered in this book, the reader will find discussion on: why humanity was required, the creation and fall of Adam, the flood, and the spread of human language.
“The Broken Gift” by Daniel Friedmann gives believers and scientists much to ponder. I can only hint at the wealth of information in this book as Daniel Friedmann has thoroughly researched his topic. He presents his thesis in logical terms. There is a glossary in the back of this book along with a list of references. The author has successfully presented information that should bring science and religion into balance. I highly recommend this book.
