Fiction - Intrigue

Digger Cartwright welcomes you to the world of online dating in The House of Dark Shadows. On the outside, it appears that Alex Rommel has everything. He has the best of everything, but on the inside, he is just a lonely man. When he meets an old friend, he finds out that his old buddy found love on the internet and is blissful to say the least. Envious and desperate to let go of the past and lost love, Alex ventures into the world of online dating to see what it has in store for him.
The murky world of internet dating brings Hope in his life. Hope is a French journalist and just about everything he ever desired. But she has her own secrets and her past. It appears that something sinister is coming towards him from all directions. His mother is constantly badgering him, his lusting secretary is getting on his nerves, his business is getting more demanding, and Hope is making him suspicious. There are shadows all around him and he cannot decipher if any of them are friendly or all of them are enemies. Can he rescue himself before all is lost and he is destroyed?
Since I started reading this novel, I have been thinking of a word to describe Alex Rommel. The only word I find suitable enough is jaded. The House of Dark Shadows is an amazing psychological thriller and it entices the reader from the get go. The storyline is good and very entertaining. Alex is a little tough to love, but I think that is just a part of his character. Nonetheless the novel was good and deserves to be read again and again.

The Clock Strikes Midnight
Joan C Curtis

Fiction - Mystery - General

With The Clock Strikes Midnight, Joan Curtis has written a true page-turner. The plot follows a successful business woman named Janie as she takes a journey back over her life. The diagnosis of terminal cancer (given on the opening page, so no plot spoiler there) rouses Janie's determination to take care of an unfinished issue from an early period in her life. The story begins in Savannah, Georgia, but quickly moves to Atlanta where the author deftly describes the contrasts of various parts of that city.
Joan Curtis takes the reader through Janie's life story and that of the previous generation. The characters of her family and friends are developed with sensitivity, even though some of them are very unattractive. Central to the plot is an understanding of Janie's family - her mother, step-father and her sister, in particular.
In the process, the author describes Janie's determination and her progress towards settling the old issue before the cancer causes her death. Exactly what that issue is does not become clear until the final pages. But it becomes obvious that it involves the murder of Janie's mother by her step-father, Ralph. Ralph's plea of innocence only adds to the uncertainty and suspense.
On a number of occasions, the reader may anticipate the ending, but each time a new variable is introduced to maintain the uncertainty and tension! The result is a fast-moving suspense-filled yarn. Those who like a good mystery story will enjoy this book.

Fiction - Mystery - General

The Girl in White Pajamas by Chris Birdy is a story of love, lies, and deception. Bogie McGruder receives word that his brother, Officer Bud of the Boston PD, has been shot dead. He returns for the funeral, hoping to catch a glimpse of Bailey, his ex-lover, and his daughter Isabella whom he has never met, before flying home. Things never go according to plan, though. Bailey contacts Bogie, looking for protection because she believes someone is hunting her down to kill her. Bogie finally gets to meet his love child and discovers that he never stopped loving her mother. What should have been a simple job of protecting Bailey turns sour when he gets dragged into the Boston PD’s investigation into his brother’s murder, despite his best efforts to stay out of it. Isabella, a little girl who has an obsession with martial arts, seems to be the only pure person in a world filled with liars and deceivers.
The Girl in White Pajamas by Chris Birdy was a well written novel that has obviously been researched. The characters fit the storyline and I found it to be one of those stories that, although it didn’t grab you from the first, it slowly drew you in, like a spider catching its prey. I soon found it was hard to put down, needing to know what was next, and eventually I was so embroiled in the plot that it was impossible to put it down without wondering how the story would end. Great story, I'm very impressed.

Fiction - Mystery - General

The Girl in Black Pajamas is a mystery by Chris Birdy. Bogie McGruder and Rose Jones are partners of R&B Investigations. When Tommy, an employee, is shot and his laptop disappears, they discover a hacker is trying to infiltrate their network. Rose’s uncle Walter, a master hacker, assists them in tracking the source. While improving firewalls, they unearth a few murders that lead to the perpetrator whose current motives will devastate the financial institutions. Bogie also has other problems as his chatty, highly intelligent four-year-old daughter, Isabella, is determined to learn the Five-Point-Palm-Exploding-Heart technique she saw in Kill Bill Volume 2; and family members become entangled in a sex scandal that could ruin many lives, including law enforcement officers of the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office.
The Girl in Black Pajamas by Chris Birdy has a wonderful theme with interesting characters such as Isabella, who made my reading a delight. I liked the first few pages which started off with a bit of action. Chris Birdy developed a story that was not only suspenseful, but amusing too. It entailed a lot of good emotional drama taking place and the characters were so different from each other. The author showed how Bogie dealt with the numerous problems he encountered, while trying to keep his family together. He also focused on other persons who added spice to the story with their conversations and actions. I was entertained by The Girl in Black Pajamas and think it is a book worth reading.

Fiction - Mystery - Historical

The Secret Price of History: Searching for the Treasure behind Alexander's Medallion by Gayle Ridinger and Paolo Pochettino has a complex plot that should grab any reader with an interest in history. It jumps back and forth between 19th century and 21st century adventures by following a medallion along with the people who possessed it and the people who searched for it during those two centuries. The story, in both centuries, is about the search for Alexander the Great's third treasure and the role the medallion plays in that search. It's also a detective story because the people searching for that treasure commit horrible crimes and need to be caught. These two mysteries are well written adventures that capture readers and keep them involved in the plot of a fairly long book.
Angie Cebrelli is a TV weather girl who spices up her spots by dressing as historical characters. When she decides to broadcast from a Civil War reenactment at Gettysburg, she chooses the outfit of her ancestor, an Italian immigrant who fought in that battle with the Garibaldi Guards, a group of soldiers with war experience from the Battle for the Roman Republic in Italy. She wears the red shirt that was the symbol for those soldiers, along with a medallion that has been in her family for generations. A bullet hits Angie's arm from someone using live ammunition. Fortunately, a Good Samaritan comes to her aid, but while the man is applying a tourniquet, another man tries to steal her medallion. Here's where Angie's portion of the story takes off as Angie begins her quest to learn why.
The Secret Price of History covers the 19th century Battle for the Roman Republic in great detail and touches on the American Civil War. (There is a wonderful description of the Battle of Gettysburg late in the book.) It also covers the ancient religion of Mithraism and touches on other philosophies such as Transcendentalism. Ridinger and Pochettino's research seems thorough. The Roman Republic (19th century) and the battle to secure it are subjects I have never studied, so that made the story even more interesting to me. I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes historical fiction.

The Maynwarings

Fiction - Mystery - Historical

The Maynwarings by Digger Cartwright is everything a western novel should be and so much more. The Maynwarings are an influential family living in Carson City, Nevada, shortly after the Civil War during the time of reconstruction. Barron is the head of the family as well as the State Senator, dividing his time between Washington, D.C. and his Greenbrier spread, the largest cattle ranch in the area. Carson City is a typical western town until they suddenly begin having all sorts of trouble. There is a hanging, cattle rustling, unexplained killings, sick cattle and mass confusion. There is also a newcomer in town, Gideon Van Thorn. The Maynwarings are slowly able to connect the dots and blame all of the trouble on Thorn and his unruly group of men.
The Maynwarings is 428 pages long and the action is continuous on all of the pages, in each paragraph and in every sentence. Digger Cartwright has written a western story that not only tells the story of the old wild west cowboys and ranchers of early Nevada days, but there is also politics, family, drama, suspense and mystery to keep you reading well into the middle of the night. I found myself looking at the Maynwaring family as old friends. I hurt for their pains, cheered for their joys, and booed the bad guys. The Maynwarings would be such a great movie; I even have a cast of Hollywood stars picked out for them. This is a must-read book; I know you will not be able to put it down until you reach the unexpected ending.

The Doom Murders
Brian O'Hare

Fiction - Mystery - Murder

The Doom Murders by Brian O’Hare is a story of a few murders. To begin with, a bishop is killed in a grotesque manner and the only notable clue from the naked body is an alphanumeric word. During the police investigation itself, more deaths of a comparable nature take place. When clues fail to emerge pointing to a plausible theory as to the criminal, the investigators turn to all possible forms of help, one being religious doctrine. With the help of biblical experts, the investigators manage to decode the writings retrieved from the scene of the crime, especially the alphanumeric word and its possible relevance, which leads the police in a totally unexpected direction.
The Doom Murders by Brian O’Hare is mystery at every turn of the page. The painstaking, repetitive and dry nature of detective work in solving a murder is shown in its real depth. To that end, O’Hare writes with a keen eye for detail with his tale evolving at a surprisingly fast pace. The stereotypes that dominate popular crime thrillers, especially these days, are notable by their absence and O’Hare leans toward the human side of his characters, imbuing them with a real world presence that is in turn witty and passionate. This is most evident in his lead, Jim Sheehan, who in his introspection wrestles with the conflicts of faith as his investigations progress. It’s a cleverly contrived and highly thought provoking plot. A great crime thriller and an enthralling read.

Fiction - Mystery - Murder

Intense dreams leave Gary Foreman with terrible headaches and vague feelings that he should remember something. Gary has spent the past ten years living in California after relocation in the witness protection program, but hearing an old song triggers an increasingly persistent headache. The Ghost of Blackwood Lane by Greg Enslen brings Gary to a confrontation with his past as he tries to understand the dreams and uncover the reason for his suppressed memories. As a witness for the prosecution against the local crime boss, Gary’s father needed to make sure his son would stay safe, especially after the murder of his wife. In an unorthodox procedure, Gary was hypnotized to accept a new name and forget his real identity, as well as his girlfriend, Judy. In the meantime, Judy is living an unpleasant life and thinks more and more of Gary, or Chris as she had known him, as the beatings she receives from her husband are becoming more and more violent. A trip back to his hometown brings Gary closer to answers, but will it be at too high a cost?
Greg Enslen has created a masterfully interwoven tale of love, loss, greed and hope in The Ghost of Blackwood Lane. Based on the revenge a crime family seeks and the lengths a father goes to in order to protect his son, the story combines psychological, emotional and paranormal elements to bring the players together and resolve the plot. With lively action, realistic dialogue and a quaint view of life in middle-America, the story carries you along through many fascinating twists and turns to an amazing conclusion. Great story! All the pieces blended very well and created a riveting tale.

Fiction - Mystery - Sleuth

The Stone House Secret by Debra Burroughs opens with a broken date, one wrecked by the news of an unnatural death that was to keep them busy; Michael being one of only two detectives on the small Hidden Valley police force and Jenessa being the reporter on a large Sacramento newspaper. They fall headlong into solving the mystery, many a time with a mutual exchange of leads. With every turn of the inquiry bringing up fresh characters and events, their task becomes a rather long affair. As the process of cracking the case continues, new twists develop often, linking the deceased with an excess of wealth, as well as that of ill health, leading to surprising conclusions. Michael and Jenessa also find solace and comfort in their romantic company, notwithstanding the frequent intrusions by the exes from both sides.
The Stone House Secret by Debra Burroughs is a fast paced novel that is a pleasure to read. Just when I was convinced that the case was all figured out, the introduction of a new twist left me with no clue. In this novel one can see a perfect combination of smooth prose, a well-paced plot, interesting, endearing, compelling and sometimes quirky characters, a touch or two of romance, and a good suspenseful mystery to solve. The author has succeeded in handling masterfully the exes from sides and making their togetherness look natural. A good read with a well crafted plot and an endearing presentation, this is a valuable asset to one's thriller collection.

Fiction - Mystery - Sleuth

Jake Travis has met his match in The Second Letter. Determined to complete another job for his government contacts, he sets out to retrieve a letter that supposedly came from the Cold War era when America was young and policies were lax. But Raydel Escobar isn’t giving up that letter for nothing. He wants his IRS debt wiped clean or he claims he’ll keep the letter. It’s going to take everything Jake, his girlfriend Kathleen, and his friends Garret and Morgan have to try and make everything work out the way it needs to because Raydel is hiding more than just a large IRS debt.
The Second Letter was a captivating book of lies and deceit as well as love and loss. Jake is an adventurous soul who really never does give up. He’s determined to see this case through, no matter what it may cost him and it makes him a character that readers look up to. Robert Lane’s book keeps you flipping one page after another and it most definitely draws you in with the characters. Even Escobar is a character you can’t help but be entranced by as he goes about his dirty deeds and black market dealings. His connections will definitely make it difficult to force him into anything, but Jake definitely does an excellent job of trying. I was happy with the way the story balanced so many different elements with the mob, the blackmail, and romance all at the same time. All of the characters and all of the plot were important.
