Non-Fiction - Short Story/Novela

In The Little Girl Praying on the Hill, we find a story filled with heartbreak, pain, suffering, as well as joy and peace. Even with all of these various emotions, this little girl is challenged within herself to find her purpose and reason for living. Having a strong and vivid imagination sometimes got her into trouble as she would forget her chores. Her father was a drunk and her mother carried more than her fair share of the load. She longed for a time when her father wouldn't be drunk. He promised her time and again that he wouldn't drink any longer, only to not live up to those promises. She used her imagination as a powerful way to escape the problems of living in her environment, all of the hard work and her drunken father. She would rather live in imaginary castles and lands than the one she was in.
Reaching out to better understand God's will for a little girl's life, we find author Olga D. Agostino taking the reader along a very disturbing trail that shares various emotions and feelings. In The Little Girl Praying on the Hill, there is also the description of a baby sister's death, the beating from a mother and wanting to die herself. This book is filled with sorrow and pain, yet also of how a little girl chooses hope and determines to find a way to make it in a sad and uncaring world. This is a book to encourage the reader that no matter what one's circumstances are, there can be better times ahead.

Denny McLain, author of The Art of Pitching, played for the Detroit Tigers. In the introduction, Denny McLain offers some excellent advice for those who want to be Major League pitchers. “First always think about an education. In today’s game they want smart guys, guys that can comprehend and guys who want it badly. First and always think education.” The author addresses Tips and Applications: “Listen and Pay Attention.” In this section he recommends “breaking everything down, one movement at a time.” There are also photographs of the different types of pitches. In the first chapter, the author stresses control. He states that you learn control by practice and that a pitcher should always throw full strength. A pitcher must also take care of their arm and the way to do that is to warm up.
The Art of Pitching is an excellent resource for coaches, parents, athletes and young athletes. There is a vast amount of advice and knowledge in this tiny book of a mere 81 pages. The book discusses the hitter, the extra pitch, playing the game, exercise, equipment and talent. Most young men enjoy playing ball. While not all will make it to the Major Leagues, they will still benefit from The Art of Pitching. The photographs and illustrations are a great addition to this book. Author Denny McLain, two-time winner of the Cy Young Award and MVP with the Detroit Tigers, shares his experience and knowledge on how to be a better pitcher.

Non-Fiction - Travel

The Lullaby Illusion: A Journey of Awakening by Susan Joyce is the story of an American woman and the situations she faced in her life while living in Europe and the Middle East. The story takes you to the time when Susan was living in Cyprus and how the coup affected normal life. She finds her life changing as a border refugee. Later she gets rescued from a boat in the Indian Ocean. Along with the story of her survival and resilience runs the story of her miscarriages and tragic still-birth. The setbacks see her reinventing herself as an artist.
The memoir is a compelling read. The military coup and getting trapped in the middle of a war, a failing marriage, and a suspicion that her husband is a spy give many dimensions to the theme. There is a lot of action and emotion happening in the story which makes it fast paced and exciting. Her travel descriptions lend color to the story. The book sees the transformation of the author from a housewife to that of a confident and determined woman. The dialogues are rich, the travel descriptions are detailed, adding to the visual appeal of the scenes. As extras, the history and humor make it a beautiful memoir.
I found the book inspiring, sad, beautiful, humorous and it will strike a chord within readers on many levels. It is a remarkable and truly inspiring story. Though her story is scary and dangerous in the beginning, it ends on an uplifting note. There are so many dimensions and levels to the author's experiences that make it an engaging read.

Poetry - Inspirational

Understanding what separates one individual from another, one concept from another, one realm or planet or star from another, or even that space which separates a question from an answer, is all brought into question and analyzed in poetic fashion by Anna Elkins in her collection of poetry The Space Between. Anna divides her collection into three different sections which separate 'what is' from 'what is dreamed.' Part I, “What Is,” is a collection of poems which discuss the different types of things that fill the space between others in reality, for instance, the space between words or the fog between grass and trees in the forest, or even the space filled with a kiss between Saturday and Sunday. Part II, “What Is Dreamed,” brings to light those things which fill the space between sleeping and waking, especially in the exact moment when one awakens to realize that the plumage of a bird has turned to ice on the windshield. Finally, Part III, “What Is Dreamed of In Day,” which opens the door to exploring the elusive dreams which are those things we strive to achieve like the gold which we try to shape into a brick to stack. All of these poems come together into a complete portrait which draws together the space between dreams and reality.
In The Space Between, Anna Elkins paints a portrait which bridges the space between dreams, striving, and reality by using word images that would be impossible to construct with the medium of a graphic artist. Only through the imagination, spurred on by the imagery of poems such as these, is the mind able to envision those concrete and abstract objects and concepts which fill The Space Between. Inspiring, thought provoking and vivid; the portrait painted by The Space Between is a masterpiece formed from the colors of a verbal palette.

Poetry - Love/Romance

Self-proclaimed “Greatest Poet Alive” (GPA) returns with a new collection of poetry entitled Revenge of the Orgasm: An Erotic Autobiography. Certainly not shy, and obviously confident, if not slightly arrogant, GPA holds nothing back in his passionate chapbook of poetry. This is not your typically shy, flowery love poetry. These are raw and straightforward descriptions of romantic encounters. These are poems of tumbled sheets, frenzied kisses, heat, breathless whispers, and the secret dances that lovers perform. These are poems designed to have you yearning for the arms of your own lover.
GPA’s poetry is fun and entertaining. The poems are short and quick to read, but have much to say. The author’s openness and honesty is also something to be admired. And, though the title Revenge of the Orgasm: An Erotic Autobiography might suggest otherwise, the poems are not gratuitously graphic in their sexuality and women are treated with respect, if not held in admiration.
My only concern with this collection is that as an avid fan and scholar of poetry, I expect very rigid standards from a poet proclaiming themselves as the “Greatest Poet Alive”. While the poems in this book are quite enjoyable, I think the poet still has some work to do before labeling himself the “Greatest”. I have no complaints with the poet’s word usage or storytelling abilities, but the flow and format of the poems could be tightened. Special attention needs to be used on line breaks in order to create tension and poignancy. However, I still urge fans of romantic poetry to consider reading this book. It is quite good and delivers the passion and steaminess that it suggests. Next time you are in the mood for romance, pick up GPA’s collection. I think it will please you.

Poetry - Love/Romance

Cometh The Two was written by Jon Messenger. The book was created in a general poetry genre. The design and layout suits the story well. It is a short story in poetry with a topic of knights-soldiers. The book has a great adventure story within its pages, filled with love, sadness, anger, bitterness, delight, and determination.
This tale of a knight is written in a way often not spoken anymore, that of poetry. The plot is that of greatness, relating to old stories of knights and their maidens. A young boy falls in love with a girl of an upper status. Having nothing to offer, he tells her father he loves her, but just as her father expects his proposal to date his daughter, the young boy is shipped off to learn the art of knighthood. During this time he will overcome many obstacles thrown at him to deter him from his beloved.
Jon Messenger's Cometh The Two is a very intriguing, interesting story. The story has hints of warriors past and present, weapons of past and present, but a love that time can never alter. I loved the story and the way it was written. Putting it into a column of 4 stanzas going down the pages, makes it seem as if it is a running scroll from the time of the knights. The references in the present war today made the story feel very personable and relatable, as if it was an actual love story. A great read.

The Marriage Caper (Billionaire Games) by Sandra Edwards is a lovely romantic story of true love winning over money. Number two son, Andre de Laurent, comes from a family that has lots and lots of money; Tasha Gordon is an aspiring actress working as a waitress. Andre and Tasha are in love but have no plans of ever marrying. Andre has always known his older brother would inherit the family business and become the leader of the family and he has always been a little jealous of his brother Julian. This all changes when his mother’s uncle leaves him the bulk of his estate. There are stipulations involved in the will, which states that in order for his brother and younger sister and himself to receive the inheritance Andre must find a bride within a very short period of time and remain married for a year. Tasha is also facing a situation in her life. She has just taken a pregnancy test and discovers that she is expecting Andre’s baby. Andre visits Tasha and plans to explain the situation he has been placed under and ask her to marry him for the year, but when he finds the pregnancy test results and realizes Tasha is having his child, he simply asks her to marry him and neglects the other important details. When Tasha does find out why she thinks they were married, things go badly.
Sandra Edwards is a wonderful romantic storyteller. The Marriage Caper is a book that will make you believe it is possible to find, love and marry your Prince Charming. The story was warm and fuzzy and the characters were so very likeable. I read this book in less than two days because I just couldn’t put it down; it made me smile and it made me cry just a little. This is a book every woman, young and old, will love reading. I didn’t know it was book two when I began reading or that Sandra Edwards has written more Billionaire Games books, but I am planning on getting them all and reading them immediately. The Marriage Caper is a ten-star book – don’t pass it up.

With her brothers happily married to two beautiful American women, Lecie de Laurent decides it’s time for her to experience a bit of independence. She leaves for California with her friend Deidra, where they spend the days baking in the sun and enjoying lemon drop martinis at the beach bar, Hang Ten. But Lecie’s controlling father wants her back in France and he’ll do anything to make it happen, including having Lecie deported. In The Marriage Fix, we find Lecie in search of a temporary husband so she can beat her father at his own game, only she’ll do it with the blessing of her protective brothers. Unfortunately, Lecie is quite smitten with Hang Ten proprietor, Nick Matthews, who is engaged to someone else. This fun story from Sandra Edwards is well-written, fast paced and utterly delightful.
Lecie and Deidra have been going to Hang Ten regularly for the crab cakes and definitely not for the soon to be married owner, Nick. But when Nick’s fiancée does the unthinkable, he is need of a great deal of money to keep his life from spinning out of control. The thing I really enjoyed about The Marriage Fix was that the reason Lecie and Nick needed one another was solid and not contrived. They both had the means to help the other achieve their goals, and a little dusting of attraction is just the icing on the cake, right? Sandra Edwards wrote a great story with this, giving us more time with favorites like Camille and Tasha and even Lecie’s overbearing father. The time with the girls was most enjoyable, as was watching Nick and Lecie come to terms with their growing feelings. The Marriage Fix is a quick read, but it is definitely a full story guaranteed to satisfy.

Romance - Contemporary

In The Marriage Bargain, we have Camille Chandler trying to get the scoop on why French millionaire Julian de Laurent is in need of an actress. Julian needs a temporary wife for the same reason all wealthy Frenchmen do; to get his father off his back. So instead of getting the scoop, Camille chooses the $5 million when she loses her job for refusing his offer. Sandra Edwards’ tale of a marriage of convenience is a light read, but it really is fun and uncomplicated. Camille and Julian are pretty great together, despite the differences in their lives and upbringing. He likes that she’s a simple girl with no airs and she likes that Julian is gorgeous, cultured and charming. Together they are an unlikely duo that shouldn't work, but somehow they do.
I loved that Sandra Edwards decided to put the man in the position of an unwanted marriage; it’s something you rarely see outside of Regency romances. But having a big strong man like Julian running scared from a pre-engagement announcement is priceless! They both have trust issues, albeit for different reasons, so as they get to know one another you can see the sparks and the connection between Camille and Julian begin to grow. The Marriage Bargain provided a really good time because it had everything from a Vegas wedding, a scheming ex, and a bitter boss with an axe against the super wealthy, France and a big ol’ misunderstanding. By the end of the book I was smiling like a fool because this story was just so…fun.

Romance - Fantasy/Sci-Fi

Post-apocalyptic survival isn’t easy for anyone, but it just got tougher for Ruin Rat Kayla in Jamie A. Waters' The Two Towers. Headstrong and independent, Kayla is a skilled scavenger and an intelligent computer hacker. She has caught the eye of one of the lead traders which supplies Omnilab’s two towers with the luxury items their residents once enjoyed 150 years before the destruction of the cities. Digging through the ruins, the items are recovered and sold by traders to Omnilab; what’s left over after the traders leave the sector is left to a group of scavengers called Ruin Rats. When Kayla discovers a particularly valuable Aurelia Data Cube after trader Ramiro had cleared the area, she suddenly finds herself in conflict with the trader who later proves that he will stop at nothing to get even with her and everyone associated with her. Having been discovered by another trader, Carl, who is a leader among his peers, Kayla is brought on board with him, initially because of her scavenger instincts, but also in order to provide her with protection from Ramiro. As things heat up in the conflict with Ramiro, they also heat up between Kayla and Carl whose chemistry at times is simply out of control.
The Two Towers is a well-written and action-packed sci-fi thriller that is the first in a planned series by Jamie A. Waters. The action, intrigue and suspense keep the story moving, while the explosive romance between Kayla and Carl adds plenty of extra spice. This is a well thought-out plot which is perfectly executed in a way that draws the reader into a deeply emotional attachment with the hero and heroine. Once caught up in Kayla’s plight, it is impossible to put the book down. Suspenseful, steamy and action-packed, The Two Towers is a blockbuster opening to a series which is certain to thrill sci-fi readers for years to come.
