Non-Fiction - Biography

More than 100 years after their births, the road to Happy Trails still begins with Dale Evans, The Queen of the West, and Roy Rogers, The King of the Cowboys. What a tribute to this legendary couple of all times. “Spending summers working at the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans museum brought an unexpected pleasure,” says Dustin Rogers, grandson of Roy and Dale. Dustin goes on to say, “I got to personally hear the fans talk about how their lives were impacted by the two people I called Grandpa and Grandma.” In Volume II, The Touch of Roy and Dale, Tricia Spencer recalls the impact Roy and Dale had on the lives of their fans. Their fans were more like an extended family of millions.
I didn’t think Ms. Spencer could top Volume One of The Touch of Roy and Dale, but Volume II is even more special because it tells more of the influence this very special couple had on the lives of their many fans. As I read the letters of fans in this book, I was touched by the heartwarming relationship Roy and Dale had with these fans. Their extended love clearly shows in what the fans say, as well as what members of their family have witnessed. This book is full of even more pictures, loads of information about Roy and Dale, film billboards, and so, so much more. You will just have to purchase a copy of this book for yourself to see what is included. I highly recommend The Touch of Roy and Dale Volume Two, and you can’t have this book unless you have The Touch of Roy and Dale Volume One. These are truly the best two books I have ever read about real-life people!!

The Touch of Roy and Dale is the story of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. Tricia Spencer recalls the impact and influence of Roy and Dale as only their fans and family could tell it. Included in this wonderful book are never before seen photos, art, poetry and songs, along with letters of fan mail, and a wealth of information about this awesome couple. There is so much more in this book that you just need to check it out for yourself!
One sentence I read in this book says that Roy Rogers and Dale Evans touched lives, and their legacy lives on, and this is so true for those of us who remember them. I wanted to read The Touch of Roy and Dale to remember those early years of my life and the excitement as my parents talked about them, and always listened and watched as they were on television and radio. They were a household name that I will never forget. This book is so very interesting. Ms. Spencer goes into details about their lives, and the mountains of fan mail they received. And back in the day it was snail mail, not email, so you can imagine! I especially enjoyed hearing their children remembering their mom and dad, and the life they lived while growing up in their home. If you are fans of this Happy Trails couple, I really want to encourage you to pick up a copy of this book. There are just not enough words to tell you the wonders of this precious book!

Non-Fiction - Business/Finance

Keys to the Corner Office: Success Strategies for Women by Women by Rhonda F. Rhyne is the perfect how-to book for any aspiring female executive. Organized into five parts with sixty chapters, the practical manual provides the proven strategies and a road map for achieving career advancement. The book starts with a brief history of some of the most recent advances in the workplace for women’s equality, but the overall focus is more on what women can do now to improve their chances of breaking through “the glass ceiling.” It all starts with a positive self-image, dressing the part and creating a brand identity. Then areas are explored such as how to land the job, networking, the importance of communication, confidence in public speaking and keeping life in balance. In the back of the manual is an extensive suggested reading list.
Rhonda F. Rhyne shares her own personal experiences that help lend wisdom to the most common situations that women encounter in a male-dominated workplace. As a professional life-coach, she empowers women to live a well-rounded life where 40% of their time will be spent on career functions. Beyond the basic management and leadership topics, she offers examples of how to say no in a positive way, how to appear strong without being a “dragon lady,” and surviving gender-bias and double standards. This book is both motivating and inspiring, taking in the big picture of a 19% disparity between the sexes, but provides a clear-cut path to holding the keys to the corner office.

Non-Fiction - Cooking/Food

From the Kitchens of Pancho Villa, written by Karina Ann Betlem, is so much more than a cookbook; it is a collection of recipes, stories, and pictures that share and celebrate a community and authentic Mexican cuisine. From the Kitchens of Pancho Villa begins with an introduction which explains the purpose of this book and how Karina came to creating and publishing it. A general overview of the recipes and layout of the book is shared. Before the actual recipes are shared there is a section devoted to discussing the ingredients as many of these may be different from what one may be used to cooking with. Each chapter is devoted to one of the cooks whom Karina spent time with in order to create this cookbook. There are a few paragraphs shared about each individual and then the recipes that each one prepares in his or her home are shared.
Karina Ann Betlem has done an excellent job of sharing her new home and community with the rest of the world in her cookbook, From the Kitchens of Pancho Villa! I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Not only is this cookbook filled with so many delicious-sounding recipes, but it is also filled with pictures and stories that bring to life the cooks that are featured and also add a homey feel to the recipes. I enjoy Mexican food and going to Mexican restaurants; however as Karina has pointed out, this is not experiencing authentic home-style Mexican cuisine and these recipes are ones that anyone could make at home. These recipes are well-written as they can be easily followed so that the dish is accurately made and they do not appear to be time consuming. The ingredients chapters are a great addition to the cookbook as I am not familiar will all of the ingredients that are frequently used and the explanations that are provided are enough that I would feel at ease with working with them. This cookbook is a must-have for anyone whom enjoys Mexican cuisine.

Non-Fiction - Education

The Scoop on Good Grammar by Margie Blumberg is not only informative and easy to use, but is also fun to use. The book begins with the basic parts of a sentence and the eight parts of speech. It then progresses through those problem areas of making words plural and showing possession. It tackles the tough subjects of relative, demonstrative, indefinite, interrogative, intensive, and reflexive pronouns, before taking a dive into adjectives. The action heats up as the verbs rush into the picture, sporting various twists and turns. Capitalization and punctuation bring up the tail end, showing how important they are to the meaning of a sentence. Finally, a plethora of special words and phrases, that have a tendency to trip up even the most athletic readers, writers, and speakers, join the chase toward the finish. The answers to the quizzes which were included throughout the book allow the reader to discover how well they have advanced through the grammar lessons. Exploration, art, food, sports, movies, poetry, and travel are used as themes to help draw the reader’s interest to a sometimes dull subject.
Margie Blumberg has designed a method of teaching grammar that is presented in an interesting and lighthearted manner that lessens the struggle. Her approach makes this sometimes dry subject more like eating cookies at “grammer’s” house than trying to choke down “grammar” from a text book. The graphics and photography add a great deal to making the subject matter easier to swallow. The book is not only easy to read and use, but it is also easy to reference for someone who needs a quick answer to a grammatical challenge. English teachers who are looking for a new approach to teaching grammar will fall in love with this book. Students, writers, and those experiencing the English language for the first time should refer to this guide first, because it is easy to use and addresses some of the more difficult challenges in a concise and accurate manner. This book should be on the shelf of every person who writes or speaks the English language.

The Sacred Path of Eco-Consciousness by Alice Iida is a book that speaks about the importance of restoring nature and saving the planet from destruction in modern times. She speaks about the ecological damage that is staring at us and tells readers to nurture the planet and also our souls. In times filled with unhappiness, strife and chaos, connecting with the universe is the best way to fill the void that is there in all of us. The author shares her amazing journey into the Amazon rain forest and speaks about how the experience refreshed and rejuvenated her, and helped her overcome depression and anxiety. The book speaks about healing our souls in tandem with healing the crippled universe.
The book is highly inspirational and elevates readers into a higher level of consciousness with its discussions on the seven Chakras and the Amazon Shamans. It is quite exhilarating to read about the Amazon Shamans. The author tells readers to develop a close relationship with the natural world and feel the pulse of the universe in them, and try to save it from deteriorating any further. The positive message of trying to transform ourselves and re-wire our negative energy to connect to our souls is the underlying theme of the book.
The mysticism and the spiritual teachings in the book evolve our thinking and we no longer see life as something difficult. It erases all the thoughts and worries that bothered us and helps us undertake a journey into our inner selves.

Non-Fiction - General

The Adventure of I: A Journey to the Centre of Your Reality is not a quick or light read. Author Tania Kotsos was inspired to write this book by the inscription on the Ancient Temple of Apollo: "Know Thyself." The author stresses the need to know the Real You, the "part of you that is eternal, immortal, and unchanging." If you know the Real You, you will have the "power to create the life you desire and become the master of your experience.” The author believes this power is what makes us different from other animals. Humans have what I call free will (the author uses the term Freedom of Choice). For your mind’s power to be effective you must have self-awareness. Author Kotsos based her thesis on the Top-Down-Living theory "which is to direct your life from higher degrees of self-aware consciousness, which at its height, is your Real Self."
The Adventure of I could be one of the most important books you ever read. It opens readers up to a new way of thinking and an abundance of untapped power. This is not a power we can control or increase; it already exists within us but, like most things, if we do not know about it, it cannot be utilized. It is something we must discover. The author appears to have done a great deal of research and explains the topics so the layperson can easily understand them. There is so much more to this book than I can possibly cover in one short review, so I highly recommend you pick up a copy today.
