The Butterfly Crest by Eva Vanrell takes us between the shadows of the human world where a war that is as old as time is raging. A long-told prophecy says one human woman will change the course of the divine war and one day Elena - a seemingly regular woman living a normal life - gets a letter about a deposit box in her mother’s name. This letter and the contents of the box are a cursed inheritance and send Elena on a journey that could only be considered mythical and unbelievable. She must make choices to see where destiny takes her.

This is a great story that merges two different realms almost seamlessly into one another and makes a complex story entertaining and compelling. The action was fast and the pace of the book was perfect. Elena is a fantastic character whom I found to be intelligent and strong, but who has to find her way in an impossible situation, giving her even more depth as well. Eva Vanrell has created a strong story with a beautifully strong female main character, in a world and with a story line that is imaginative and unique. I have read many fantasy style stories that offer a similar version of wars that have been going on for all time, but this has been by far one of the most well thought out and well put together plots. If you are looking for a read for the summer that will have you hooked within the first pages and hold your interest until the very end, leaving you wanting more … then this is your book.

The Olympus Cloud: Adventures of a Dreamer is animal fiction written by Stephen Randel. The main character in this series of adventures is a white French Bulldog named Maximilian, Max for short. Max lives with his master, an elderly, retired doctor in Austin, Texas. They have a house with a big backyard where Max keeps the pesky squirrels and an occasional armadillo under control. Most of Max's great adventures, however, occur while he's asleep. When Max is sleeping, his mind and imagination take him to foreign shores and desperate situations. In one dream episode, Max is a hard-boiled detective, down on his luck and suffering a morning hangover, when a sultry and curvaceous mouse-lady enters his office with pleas to help free her husband from the dastardly Chen the Chinese Rat. She's willing to meet Max's fee of bones and even offers him a bonus.

Stephen Randel's canine-centric short story collection, The Olympus Cloud: Adventures of a Dreamer, kept me reading and smiling from the first page to the very last. The adventures are fabulous, literally, leading the intrepid dog up to Mount Olympus in outer space where he helps the Olympians defend against an attack by Loki, and down through a basement hole into the Witch's garden, where he attempts to solve the mystery of her death. Readers will also encounter dinosaurs, lion prides and a Scottish graveyard as they follow Max's exploits. Author Randel is endlessly inventive in these stories which never descend to being overly cute or cozy. They're rugged tales about a rugged little bulldog, and they work quite well.

Pieter is recuperating in his aunt’s home in the US after a stint gone wrong while in Iraq. While he’s there, he’s going to spend the holidays with his sister who he hasn't seen in years. It’s all supposed to be fun and relaxation. He also should be healing so he can go back to South Africa to claim back his stolen farm, avenge his murdered mother, and find his missing baby sister. But all his plans are thrown into a loop when his cousin gets into trouble with Los Zetas, a notorious and vicious gang. Now he’s going to help his cousin get out of the bind he put himself in, even if it might cause him his well-planned future in School of the Assassins by W.K. Blais.

School of the Assassins is a page turning and exhilarating thriller. It was captivating from the prologue to the last page and once I started I couldn't put it down. Pieter is a cool and interesting character. He was so awesome, especially when he did the Krav Maga thing and he’s also funny when dealing with her other cousin, Kenlyn. Pieter is still a young man but he has already experienced some harsh stuff. His mother was killed, their farm was taken, and he has to work to help his sister go to college. He worked as a security contractor and that was also challenging. It felt like he was faced with difficulties one after the other, but he’s so strong and he doesn't ever give up. I’m happy with the conclusion of the story.

The Grid by Carlton Winnfield is an extraordinary tale of international intrigue and subversion, narrated by an unnamed agent of The Grid. With highly advanced nanotechnology, a super computer to guide him, and a multitude of satellites to be his eye in the sky at all times, we follow him on a mission to uncover and then stop the plans of Khan, a radical Jihadist leader from Pakistan. As he uncovers the plans, piece by piece, a horrific picture unfolds of an alliance with Gomez Soares, a Mexican drug cartel leader, and the smuggling of an atomic bomb to Mexico City. Soares and Khan are both certain that detonating this bomb will effectively upset the balance of power in the countries they both wish to take over. But The Grid has other plans.

The Grid by Carlton Winnfield is exciting and riveting. The narrator is never named so I felt as if I were following a shadowy figure through the whole story. Rather appropriate considering that's exactly how he was supposed to be. He leads you on an international romp through three continents to complete his mission, and author Carlton Winnfield did a superb job bringing every location to life in vivid detail. His character building is equally impressive. From the beautiful Controller of The Grid to the other exotic beauties and evil men we encounter, they are perfectly visualized through his writing. I highly recommend this book for better-than-Bond thrills and intrigue.

Shadow of the Automaton by Edward P. Cardillo is a complex novel that manages to satisfy on every level. It is the story of two brothers who love each other but are on opposite sides in a battle for the future of humanity. Actually, to say they are the key players in a battle for the very soul of humanity would not be an understatement. The protagonist, Peter, is a well developed character with all the traits a good hero should have. He is smart, likable, and willing to make the sacrifices a hero often must in order to secure a safer world for all. His younger brother Kafka is the other side of that coin, diabolical and relentless in his quest to change humanity into something at once more and less than human. He has unimaginable power and knowledge and his only apparent weakness is his desire to recruit his big brother to his cause, thus securing the only approval that is really important to him.

Edward P. Cardillo is a name to watch out for. In Shadow of the Automaton he deftly handles complicated themes while moving the plot to a satisfying conclusion. While the book is a thriller complete with a healthy dose of sibling rivalry on one level, on another it is a sharp, and at times humorous look at modern American society. The satire is pointed and stinging and the emotions this book evoke run from hilarious to horrifying. It is a well written roller coaster ride.

The Whip by Karen Kondazian is a Western inspired by the true story of Charlotte “Charley” Parkhurst, an extraordinary woman who lived most of her life in the west as a man. In The Whip, Charley sets out West seeking revenge after falling in love with a runaway slave, then losing him and their family in a horrible way. Dressed as a man she's determined to track down the killer. Once out West, she becomes a stagecoach driver, “Whips”, and along the way to her revenge she kills a famous outlaw, becomes the first woman to vote, and has her housekeeper, unaware that she's a woman, fall in love with her. An extraordinary tale worthy of a movie, The Whip by Karen Kondazian is steeped in historical drama, action, and wonder.

Charley Parkhurst makes for a compelling main character, and especially since The Whip is inspired by a true story, it makes for a very compelling read. It was also very well researched (I loved all the historical tid-bits about piano legs, cat-hauling, and the stagecoach business itself), and Kondazian's novel unfolds cinematically; you can almost feel the sun's rays and smell the horse sweat. While the West has always provided a deep well of creative content, it is always the lesser known, but no less interesting stories that provide the most satisfaction. The Whip by Karen Kondazian is a truly fascinating novel of one woman's determination and grit in the heart of the Old West.

"The Girl from Long Guyland" by Lara Reznik takes us into the world of successful IT executive Laila Levin. Laila seems to have it all; the great job, a great marriage, and overall just a great life. Suddenly life starts to seem not so perfect. Work announces a large layoff putting Laila in a bad situation with the CEO and her Boss, then she receives the sad news that a friend from college killed herself.

It is this news about the friend from college that stirs up dark secrets from Laila's past. At seventeen years old in 1969 Laila heads off to college in Connecticut and all the temptations of college come right at her! Between the war protests, free love, drugs and rock and roll, you are guaranteed to have things happen.

Lara Reznik masterfully creates a story that brings the past and present together seamlessly. Lara Reznik brought the past to life for me in the pages of this book. It is more than just the images from the past that make this book great, it is the whole story and the secrets that are revealed within it.

I can honestly say it is not often that the plot of a book surprises me the way this one did. This book is truly timeless. I would recommend "The Girl from Long Guyland" to anyone who likes to read no matter what their preferred genre. Lara Reznik has managed to make sure it has a little something for everyone.

If you have a dog to train, consider picking up a copy of Think Like Your Dog and Enjoy the Rewards by Dianna Young and Robert Mottram. The premise of the book is that dogs are distinctly different from humans in their genetic make-up and if you understand that critical difference, you can effectively train almost any dog. Young explains that all dogs are naturally either followers or leaders and that they have a keen sense of rank, whether in a dog pack or in the family environment. To effectively train your dog, you must give early and prominent clues to your dog that you are in charge. Various psychological approaches which are recognized in psychological research offer diverse ways of dog training. But the ideology of positive reinforcement has proven most effective to author Young who is also a certified and award-winning trainer.

It is difficult to argue with the success of Young and readers would be smart to heed her advise. A well-trained family dog is a happy dog and the owner also derives pleasure in knowing there are limits and boundaries in the expectations and privileges of pet ownership. Terms such as reinforcement, desensitization, and social learning are all critical training components. Young believes that owners who recognize their inability to stick with a regimented training schedule would do well to enroll their dog and themselves in a training program. For those willing to undergo a rigorous training schedule, skills such as heeling, sitting, laying down, staying, and coming on command are explained in detail. Think Like Your Dog and Enjoy the Rewards is an easy to comprehend manual that should be on the shelf of every new dog owner.

This heart-rending story gives readers a peek into the world of boxing in the '30s, '40s and '50s and the bookmaking, alcoholism, treachery and the underworld that was associated with it.

The book is the emotional catharsis of the author and she speaks extensively about the relationship she shared with her parents, her father Teddy and mother Dolly. She also speaks about the tumultuous relationship shared with her mother and how she felt like an unloved orphan who was deserted by parents. The book also has the difficult times that the author goes through such as child abuse, breast cancer, being estranged from the family and then reconciliation. The author's roller coaster ride of life is an engaging read for everyone.

The book is emotional and the failing relationship of her parents is also shared with readers. The King of Casinos – Willie Martello and the El Rey Club is the story of how one small casino became the blueprint for thousands of others. Andy Martello came across one photograph that prompted him to look into the history of the El Rey Club, of how it was built up and then destroyed in 1962 by a terrific fire. That one photo brought to life a story that is colourful. That one photo uncovered buried facts and gave the El Rey Club its place in history. For fifty years after the fire that destroyed it the Club was known as a small time brothel, nothing more. Andy Martello brings us the truth about how Willie Martello built up the Club, of how he stepped on the toes of the Las Vegas Mob and of how his little club kick started Francis Ford Coppola’s career. The El Rey Club was so much more than it was thought to be and the only place you will find the truth is between the covers of this book.

The King of Casinos had me laughing out loud in places. Andy Martello has a real storyteller’s gift, a way with words that makes a reader want to be there in the thick of his story. The photographs were a fantastic addition to the book, priceless, and helping to tell the real story of the club. I couldn’t put the book down and I guarantee that anybody who picks up this book will feel the same. Once you start, you won’t want to stop until the very end. Great book, a fantastic piece of history brought to life.
