Skating with the World by Joanne Vassallo Jamrosz is an interesting collection of stories of past Olympians in the world of ice skating. The author takes us from contenders and winners in the 1970s through the past Winter Olympics in 2010. We hear about the rigorous training schedules and how fifteen years of training ends up with a single performance by the athletes wanting to be declared the best in the world. Athletes tell about their uniforms and the pride they feel walking into the Olympic stadium to the cheers of their fellow countrymen. We learn about where the international athletes are housed, what they eat, and what they do in their "spare" time.

For me, some of the more interesting stories were those of athletes who did not medal. Their primary interest was to do their best and to simply be participants. For them, the experience of Olympic competition seemed itself the goal. I also liked the stories of interacting with other athletes of the world. It seemed to motivate some of the skaters to take up careers helping others to achieve. Many of the former Olympians did begin careers as coaches or choreographers so as to remain in their general area of expertise. As one skater so aptly stated, it is unrealistic to think one can be a competitive skater for all of one's adult career. Even though I would like to have seen some of the athletes reveal their experiences in greater detail, the glimpses of the skaters and their thoughts and motivations might just be an inspiration and motivation to younger contenders.

In The Cloud Seeders by James Zerndt, Thomas and his young brother Dustin haven't seen a drop of rain in over a year. With the water drying up, the government had gone from Eco-conscious to Eco-hysterical making sure that every drop of water is accounted for, turning things like home gardening and car washing into serious infractions. Thomas is more intent on keeping his brother safe and making it through the day while his rebel rousing friend, Jerusha, feels that there's more to the drought than what the government's spilling. She's determined to find out even if it means going with Thomas and Dustin on a cross-country road trip. A novel that defies easy explanation, The Cloud Seeders is great for anyone interested in the HAARP project or post-apocalyptic, road tripping adventure.

In his acknowledgment, Zerndt said that The Cloud Seeders was turned down by several publishing houses, which is usually my cue to avoid the book like a vampire shuns sunlight. However, The Cloud Seeders was a fantastic read, one that I would love to see on the shelves (mine especially). The characters were very realistically written, nothing struck me as manipulative or sentimental, the way Thomas, Dustin, and Jerusha reacted to various situations I couldn't imagine happening any other way. I found myself thinking of them long after the book was done. I even enjoyed the poems. Usually after reading one or two I wind up skipping over the rest, but in The Cloud Seeders the poems were funny and interesting and gave us little hints about the characters. A thoroughly enjoyable book and I’d be interested in seeing more what Zerndt has to offer.

Author Arnita L. Fields gives a very insightful and inspirational view in her book After the Affair, Emotional Healing God's Way. Author Fields helps guide the reader along various stages one might find themselves dealing with including one's Heart, Spirit, Mind and Body. While some find it quick to forgive, others need a longer time to process the hurt, mistrust, and journey to restore that broken relationship. Author Fields explains it is acceptable to grieve -- just don't stay there.

When one begins to assess their wounds, they will find many things they knew were there as well as items that seemingly sprang up out of nowhere. It is at this point that one must decide if they will forgive and move forward within their life. Next, the process of renewing the mind must begin. This will not be an easy part of the journey but one that I feel is vitally important for one to truly move forward and find a release within their mind. When one's mind is clouded with resentment, it will affect everything and everyone around them. For one to reclaim the intimacy of the body after an affair, there must be forgiveness within the Heart, Spirit and Mind. There will be great difficulty in allowing intimacy with that individual unless true forgiveness has occurred.

Author Fields gives great insight, wisdom, and practical advice in her book. She also lists study questions at the end of each chapter to allow the reader the opportunity to dig deeper for more profound truth and insight. This is a book that is designed for the reader to work at their own pace, while allowing the Holy Spirit to bring help and healing within their life.

The King of the Trees by William D. Burt is a fantasy story. Rolin lives with his dad in Beechtown in a big forest. Their job is collecting honey from their many beehives and selling it on Market Day. But on Market Day, Rolin finds himself being chased by Greencloaks who want his grandmother's jeweled pendant. The adventures of Rolin begin when he is taken on a fantasy trip and encounters batwolves, dragons, grumpy griffins, and other exciting creatures. Will Rolin be able to discover the mystery behind his grandmother's jewelry box?

This book is an absolute delight. Children and adults will be enchanted. It is an excellent book to read aloud and it is ideal for those who love nature and trees. The glossary/pronunciation guide at the back helps readers to learn the words they do not know. Adventure stories open the minds of children to imagination and creativity because authors always come up with whimsy and magic.

The black and white sketches are as appealing as the fantasy itself. The strange lands, the interesting people, and the imaginative names all are enjoyable to a reader who is looking for some adventure and excitement. The book also has a nice Christian message which adds to the depth of the story. It is always good to write a story with a message for children because that is the best way to advise them. I recommend this book for children because it is a beautifully woven tale.

Alana Terry writes a riveting story about the cost of professing Christianity in a society that rejects the existence of God. Brave young Chung-Cha endured the unimaginable trauma that comes from being dragged out of one’s home in the middle of the night and being brutally beaten. She survives the terror of watching her father viciously assaulted before her very eyes, and she persists in spite of the perplexity of her mother’s cold denial. Imprisoned, mentally and physically abused, starved, and forced to live like an animal is enough torture to destroy anyone, and it does. But none of that is the end of this beloved daughter. Chug-Cha even had to watch her mother waste away and die right before her eyes, perhaps consumed by the hopelessness of renouncing her beliefs. Add to that having to allow unscrupulous men to use her body just to get a half-decent meal, and then listening to her friend betray her in order to save her own skin, and your heart breaks at the injustice some have to suffer for the sake of the cross of Christ. Chung-Cha is forced to live in underground detention for years, but her undying hope that persists in spite of confusion finally leads her to the light.

The Beloved Daughter is an inspirational book that gives the reader a clear picture of what really goes on in countries where religious freedom does not exist. The story is balanced, sharing both sides tastefully. But at the same time, it removes the blinkers from the eyes of many believers who honestly think they have been persecuted just because somebody rolled their eyes at them. The Beloved Daughter follows the life of one very brave woman who spent her formative years in a dungeon, yet survived to share her story of hope. Alana Terry’s passion for persecuted Christians can be felt within the story and she expertly awakens all those who may be tempted to turn a blind eye. The Beloved Daughter reminds us that if we aren’t willing to stand up for something, we will easily fall for anything.

Author Nancy LaRonda Johnson brings readers a dark tale of good versus evil in her book Anticipation of the Penitent. Alezea was merely a child when her parents took her out of school and introduced her to their financial enterprise. She was forced to make deliveries to her father’s clients; one of them raped her within the first week. She was homeschooled by her Aunt Nell, who also tried to teach her a few Christian values. Upon leaving home, Alezea began a long affair with a man whom she thought was Satan and she bore him a son named Thomas. He raised Thomas in his image, creating a serial murderer. This was Alezea’s life until she met Martha. After hearing Alezea’s story, Martha suggests she and Thomas go to Gabriel. While there, Thomas meets Rachel. Thomas wants to turn his life around. But is he strong enough to win the battle?

How do I begin to describe Anticipation of the Penitent? It is dark, bold, shocking, riveting, violent, and wonderfully written. The theme of this book is hope and that salvation is possible for anyone. Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins on the cross. From the prologue, I was drawn into this book and could not put it down until I read the very last page. This is one of those books you will want to read again and again, each time getting something different from it.

The Gray Season: The Summer of Salvation by Dianna Donnely is not only a story about how the death of two family members only a few weeks apart caught two families completely off guard, but it records the wonderful guidance and nurturing that took place within the lives of those closest to them. Lily Eastbrook Rhodes' story shows how, at each turn, there was another “God Thing” or “Open Door” that led from one seemingly impossible event to another; and how each of those things added up to not only healing for the family, but healing for individuals as well. The events that take place bring Lily out of the high stress corporate world and back to her childhood hometown and ultimately to the "Shop of Her Dreams." Though the healing improves the lives of the individuals and of Lily in particular, there is an ultimate healing; a healing for the emptiness inside that has plagued Lily since she was a child.

“We will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands (2 Corinthians 5:1, New Living Translation).” As the story of Lily Eastbrook Rhodes unravels in this inspired story of her family, the reader will come to realize that the things we see falling into place as we go through open doors are those things which God has been building for us in His Kingdom. Honest, compelling and inspiring; The Gray Season: The Summer of Salvation is a marvelously written chronicle of how those things which seem to be the end of our happiness turn out to be our deliverance.

I enjoyed reading The Da Vinci Code Revisited by Christopher H.K. Persaud. The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown is advertised to be a novel, but comes across as based on truth. Great danger is at hand for Christians and unbelievers who may be taken in by its heresies. Drawing in influences like the radical feminist movement, and the surge in interest in paranormal, witchcraft, and supernatural thrillers, Brown spins a tale which is nothing if not controversial.

As Persaud writes, there is much false information in Brown’s book when compared to recorded and available historical accounts. There is much discrepancy between what is said to be the history of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi texts and what anyone can read in the news. Most shocking is the persistent rumor that the holy grail is actually Mary Magdalene as a vessel for the child of Jesus Christ since, as it states in Brown’s novel, they were married and continued the bloodline which survives to the current day. A number of these errors grew from some assuming the Nag Hammadi books to be equivalent to the canonized Christian Bible, and that the church had purposely left them out because they were at odds with its agenda. But as Persaud shows, these supposed “lost gospels” were written much later than the eyewitness period and do not even bear the names of the actual writers or agree with the canonized books. It was common in those days to take the name of a famous person, say the apostle Thomas, and apply his name to your book. People then gave it more credence and, ultimately, could drive people away from the church since it was not in agreement or support of the true gospel.

The first, larger section of The Da Vinci Code Revisited deals with the errors in the novel, and the second section deals with who Christ really is. It provides valuable instruction and many prophecies in support of the bodily resurrection of Christ which, of course, were later fulfilled. A chapter is devoted to a description of the true Christian and his relationship with Christ. Attributes include abhorrence of evil, an attitude of love, and continual prayer. This is not an easy or quick read, but contains all you need to debunk the popular but heretical book, The Da Vinci Code. Revisit it today and see the proof for yourself. 5 stars.

What a scary time it must have been for the disciples and those who had been following Jesus, after He was crucified on that cruel, rugged Roman cross. But the most amazing resurrection happened and Jesus is not dead. He has risen from the dead and is alive. And the disciples, with the help of the Holy Spirit, will carry on the command made by Jesus before His death, and that is to tell the world the Gospel, and of the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And this wonderful Gospel story is played out in this most inspiring and entertaining book, The Wind, the Road and the Way by Jenny Cote.

This is my first book by author Jenny Cote and it was an amazing read. I love how the characters fell right into place, bringing the story together before my eyes in each scene. Ms. Cote takes the story that we celebrate at Easter, the story of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, and gives her readers a vivid example of how life may have been like for those living during those early days. I loved the biblical history and getting to know the lifestyles and historical details of the early days talked about in Acts. But most of all, I enjoyed the way Ms. Cote takes the Gospel of Jesus and weaves it throughout the book and the lives of the people. The redemption message is clear; Jesus died on the Cross for the sins of mankind. And He can and will change the hearts of those who trust Him. Nothing is impossible for Him.

If you enjoy biblical fiction, I highly recommend The Wind, the Road and the Way by author Jenny Cote. I just know you will enjoy this book as much as I did. Thank you, Ms. Cote, for an amazing account of God’s love for us.

Seeing the Life by Sophie Dawson is a wonderful fictional account of the most glorious true story ever told. Beginning with Mary going into labor in the stable of a Bethlehem inn, Sophie Dawson takes us through the life of Jesus, right up to the day he ascends into heaven in the sight of hundreds of witnesses. Although much of the story is fictional, it includes a great many actual events recorded in the Bible. I was particularly intrigued by the way the author built a long-standing relationship with some people mentioned only tangentially in the Bible, such as Joseph of Arimathea. This clever technique allowed her much freedom to create a plausible and culturally accurate history without veering one iota from the truth of the Gospel message. Seeing the Life is a brilliant and extremely well-conceived story, presenting the life of Christ as recorded in the scriptures, but augmented with non-scriptural day-to-day events and activities very much in keeping with the time and place in which Christ walked the Earth.

Seeing the Life is the kind of story that should capture the imagination of people who either do not or will not read the Bible, potentially being the instrument whereby they might become convinced of the truths to be found therein. As such, I believe this could be a very useful witnessing tool, particularly for teenagers in your home. Ms. Dawson is to be commended for developing a remarkably believable story. I’ve been familiar with the biblical account of the life of Christ my whole life, but Seeing the Life is perhaps the single most comprehensive compilation of biblical, cultural and historical fact, woven within the matrix of a fictional background, that I have yet encountered. In recent years Hollywood has produced a few such accounts, but they all seemed to have been primarily vehicles by which the producers could present horribly graphic depictions of violence and blood-letting. Sophie Dawson took great pains to be respectful and inoffensive in her account of the crucifixion of Christ, perhaps the single most cruel and unnecessary form of torture and execution ever practiced on planet Earth. Seeing the Life is a book I highly recommend. It may help you to see the light.
