Eleven-year-old Brody Boondoggle is walking in the woods with his hard-of-hearing Grammy when they discover an animal track of an Akaway – one of the rarest creatures in the universe that nobody has ever seen before. Before they can catch the animal, it bites Brody and something strange starts to happen. However, Brody’s friend Rudy and 13-year-old brother Jake do not believe him. Meanwhile, the Akaway gets weaker and weaker after a hunter hits it. Brody has to do everything in his power to rescue his animal friend even if it means making a journey into the spirit animal world. The Last Akaway by Gary Karton is a story that will certainly hold any child's undivided attention.

The author successfully creates a magical world that children will truly love. Gary Karton knows how to tell his story not only to children but also to young adults while preventing boredom. The main character, Brody, is such a lovable kid. At his young age, he knows what is the best and right thing to do when you are in a challenging situation, especially if it involves an animal friend. Every chapter is certainly interesting to read and it gets a hold of you even at the very start when the strange animal bites the little boy. It is interesting to note how Karton uses it, enough to intrigue his readers to continue reading.

The adventure of Brody, his brother Jake, and Grammy is not about fun but it provides a wonderful message of love and friendship. The Last Akaway and the entire magical world is fresh and wonderfully written. Thumbs up to the author!

Little Nani is a witch who likes to help people. However, she is still learning to use her magic and sometimes her spells won’t work the way she wanted them. She accidentally turned her friends into ostriches and made a horse into a bookworm. Will she manage to get her spells right? Written by Cinta García de la Rosa, “The Funny Adventures of Little Nani” is a collection of fun short stories of Nani and her special friends.

To begin with, the cover art and the illustrations are beautiful. I read this book with my 8-year-old nephew on my tablet and he loved the story very much. He looked forward to every ‘Drawing Time!’ section; he could barely contain his delight every time his saw those colorful stars, which adorned the drawing exercise segments. His reading skills are still considerably weak even in our native language, thus he tends to shy away from English books. Nevertheless, he really enjoyed little Nani’s stories so that he was more willing to improve his reading skill and even read certain chapters on his own. This is an excellent book that provides wonderful opportunity to teach children and have fun at the same time. It even brought out the inner child in me again. Cinta Garcia de la Rosa is undeniably a writer with exceptional creative gift. All her characters, especially Nani, are lovable. A wonderful children’s book for kids and their parents to enjoy. Little Nani’s magic will work on you!

I just know young readers are going to love the story of The Lost Mermaid. This delightful book is written by Jan DiRuzzo and tells an entertaining tale of a mermaid named Lily. Lily got separated from her family, and is all alone in an unfamiliar part of the sea. She asks a group of clams if they know where her family is, but they are afraid of her and “clam up,” slamming their shells on her. Lily asks a school of fish swimming by, but they are also scared and hastily swim away. Poor Lily doesn’t look like other sea creature, and that is what frightens everyone whenever she asks for help.

I was very impressed when I read this book. Jan DiRuzzo obviously has a flair for creating stories to attract younger kids. The Lost Mermaid is creative with a good plot and lovable characters. One can’t help but like Lily, and understand why she is so sad. The author’s writing skills are wonderful, as she was able to write a lovely story that included a valuable lesson both kids and adults can learn from. I thought the story was cleverly written with its fun, upbeat rhyming structure of presentation. The illustrations are awesome. The vibrant colours of the book cover and characters were beautifully created and nicely complemented the story. It is eye catching and makes the book even more appealing.

How The Octopus Got Eight Arms: Two Arms Are Never Enough by Yvonne Arroyo is an adventurous love story of a pair mismatched in looks but a match in their hearts: an octopus and a shark. This is their adventure through love and life up to the point where it is revealed why an octopus now has eight arms.

What a delightful, light-hearted, and unusual story about two sea creatures in love. As the couple experiences life, they soon encounter parenthood, stress, and the overwhelming need to have more hands or arms to handle all the tasks when it comes to raising children. This is a story that will bring a smile to your face, and a laugh to your voice. The book contains brilliant illustrations, full of color and excitement.

Reading this book, I was reminded of how I wished I had more arms or legs to achieve more tasks, or carry more items for my children. The story is very relatable to parents, although fiction. The way the octopus is depicted as a first time father, a little stressed at the needs of his children, was funny, and not far off from actual emotions in most families. The author is very creative. This is a book for both parents and children of all ages to read and enjoy together.

The Lost Mermaid: Return to the Raspberry Kingdom, written by Jan DiRuzzo and illustrated by Dave Sullins, is the story of a journey a mermaid makes back home. Lily is planning to return home to Raspberry Kingdom in Raspberry Bay and, although she is sad to leave her friends and they are sad that she is leaving, she knows she needs to go home. Lily’s mom and dad and some friends decide to go with her and help her to find the way there. Although they know the currents and the paths to take, they still encounter some challenges and difficulties along the way. However, Lily handles these challenges well, including being kind to someone whom others fear and do not seem to care for, and there is a happy ending for everyone!

Mermaids are such fascinating, magical and beautiful creatures and I enjoy reading and watching things about them just as much as my daughter. Jan DiRuzzo’s children’s book, The Lost Mermaid: Return to the Raspberry Kingdom, was no exception. This was a well-written story with great lessons throughout and I enjoyed reading this with my daughter. It was a great story, but it also allowed for good discussions as far as how Lily was a good friend and the choices she made. The illustrations for this book are done by Dave Sullins and they are absolutely gorgeous. The illustrations are beautiful, full of detail and go perfectly with the story. This is a must-read for girls who love mermaids!

Adam’s life is about to change. He is waiting eagerly for his new sister to be born. But when Emma decides to make her appearance early, she has to be put in the NICU part of the hospital in a little, clear box-like home. When Adam visited his baby sister Emma, she had wires coming from different parts of her body. She was nothing like the babies he had seen on TV. Adam’s parents explained to him that because Emma was born too early, she had to stay in the NICU so the nurses could take better care of her. Adam is finding out that his life, and the life of his parents would change forever because of this wee little girl. They would have to make many adjustments as they prepare to bring Baby Emma home to live with them. Will Adam be a good big brother?

I love that author Danielle Leibovici wrote this book just for brothers and sisters of babies who were born before their due date, and have spent time in the NICU department of the hospital. In reading this book, a child facing this situation can find peace, knowing what to expect, and how their sibling will be treated in this special room in the hospital. Ms. Leibovici wrote this book in a way that will help children accept what is happening, as well as what to expect when their sibling comes home. And just as Ms. Leibovici brings Adam into the planning for this new baby, she helps parents to include their other children in this big family event.

This book is not only a story, it is a book filled with information for children and parents during this time of an unexpected and unprepared time in their lives. And I really love that the adorable illustrations go with the story so well. The pictures alone tell the story. This is a book that needs to be in the home of every young family.

The Adventures of Flapjack: The Collar of Courage by Dan Cohen is about a dog named Flapjack, who is being bullied. Flapjack loves going to the big green park where he can play with his friends, but there's one dog that he hopes will stay away and that's a bully. You see, the bully is the meanest dog around. He picks on Flapjack and his friends and they don't know why. When Flapjack hides behind a garbage can to get away from the bully he feels ashamed, but his mom tells him about the collar of courage and takes him to buy one. Will the collar of courage help Flapjack find the courage to stand up to a bully?

The Collar of Courage is the second installment in The Adventures of Flapjack by Dan Cohen. It deals with the subject of bullying and how one little dog finds the courage to stand up to the bully in order to protect himself and his friends. Bright, colorful illustrations capture the eye as well as the imagination, bringing the story to life, allowing the reader to imagine the fear and shame that Flapjack felt but also how proud he was when he did the right thing. Written in rhyming prose, the story flows well and is easy to read. The perfect pairing of words and pictures brings the story to life in such a way that I can just imagine youngsters will be reading along in no time at all.

While fear of bullying is the major theme of the story, it's also about finding courage, doing the right thing, and the importance of knowing that your parents are always there to help. I love how the author allows the parents to take such a positive role in helping Flapjack deal with his fears. No matter what, they were always there for him. As a dog lover I found this story a delightful read. While filled with the challenges that children often face, it is also filled with positive messages that will help them overcome those challenges! This book would make a wonderful addition to any library. On a scale of one to five I would give this book a six because it is just that good. I only hope that Flapjack has many more tail wagging adventures to share.

"Randy the Raindrop: I'm a Little Raindrop" is the story of an adorable cartoon raindrop that makes his way from the sky to the ground as the rain falls. Randy enjoys his adventure of falling to the ground and playing with kids along the way. Babies and children will love the colorful illustrations in the book along with the gentle rhyming story. The story also gives a general outline of what happens with a real raindrop when it falls and evaporates through the adventures of Randy. At the end, your little one can sing the 'I'm a Little Raindrop' song, learn some fun weather facts, and explore more "Randy the Raindrop" activities online.

This is a fantastic book for children of varying ages. It is geared towards preschoolers, but the way the book is set up allows for younger and older children to also enjoy it. The illustrations by Kim Sponaugle are remarkable and will capture the tiniest baby's attention as the words are read aloud. Preschoolers will also love the colorful pages as they read along with their parents. Even school age children will want to read Randy themselves and learn about weather from the fact page at the end of the book. Children of all ages will want to sing the 'I'm a Little Raindrop' and then go online to hear the song. This book incorporates more than just a children's story by adding the song and facts to the book, but then takes it one step further by developing a website where children can complete activities based on the book. Patty Jean Wiese has created a great concept that will capture the attention of children and the admiration of parents everywhere.
