Murdered by a mysterious stranger, Ella Barnes died as a 17 year old teenager and wakes up in Raena, the witches’ world, as Sunlight Reflecting off the Moon. A different body, a different name as well as different parents; a world that is seemingly perfect but laden with injustice decree. Will Ella or the new Sunlight be able to accept her unique role in a society that only exists in human imagination?

"The Witches’ Sleep" is an exceptionally well-paced story, a pleasure that I rarely experience as an avid reader. I was truly immersed in my reading and connected with the story and its characters so well as if I was experiencing it for real. I was able to picture the surroundings easily as they are very well-portrayed. I’m glad that Raena has comparable modern settings as the normal world instead of an entirely different scenery which is normally depicted in other novels with similar themes. Ella or Sunlight is definitely the center that anchors the story and the other characters. A very well-created character, and very vibrant with acceptable weakness and admired strength. I loved the fact that the witches’ names depicted their main traits and I found it a bit humorous that the were-creatures had normal human names. Kaitlyn Deann is my new favorite author and she did extremely well with the first installment of this trilogy. I can’t wait for the next book form this remarkable author.

"Facing the Black Shadow" by Marlene F Watson is an honest and semi-confessional book that brings to light the plight of African Americans. Most of the topics that are taboo to discuss like slavery, the ghettos, N-word and self rejection are dealt with honestly by the author. The author is also an African American and a family therapist which has enabled her to go to the psyche of many such people who dislike their color and detest living in their bodies. The book takes us deep into the world of African Americans who are looked down upon because of their dark skin and how they struggle to make it among the fair skinned. It also talks about the wounds caused on their psyche due to the behavior and attitudes of the people.

"Facing the Black Shadow" fills your mind with empathy for all the African Americans. It makes us look at them with a whole new perspective. The intensity of their feelings has been dealt with very well. The book also has the author's personal stories plus some interesting stories and therapy sessions. Self hatred and self blaming has been dealt with understanding in the book. The author also gives some steps for healing for the people to come out of their own shadows and face the world with a positive attitude. The book is motivating, inspiring and uplifting. The book also has a Self Rejection Quiz and some family exercises. The book ends on a positive note affirming transforming, self healing and finding inner peace.

Charmaine Hammond continues the Toby series with her latest book “Toby the Pet Therapy Dog Says Be a Buddy, Not a Bully.” In this installment Buddy visits a classroom of students; the teacher announces that Buddy is about to receive an award: The Gold Star Friendship Award. He earned the award for being a “buddy, not a bully.” Miss Charmaine explained to the class why Buddy won the award; another dog took Buddy’s favorite Teddy Bear and tore it up and then the dog growled at Buddy. Toby barked for help and then told the other dog that being a bully is not nice. The children learned what to do when they were bullied.

I love the way the author Charmaine Hammond explains a therapy dog’s role and the lesson of how to deal with a bully. It is unfortunate that bullying is so rampant in our society that it makes it necessary for children to be taught this lesson. The illustrator, Rose Anne Prevec, is a talented artist; her art work complements the text. Children will love the bright and colorful illustrations. Toby comes to life through the tale and pictures; his personality shines through as he interacts with the children. I believe children will respond positively to this book and the entire series, which should be in every school and public library.

Both a mysterious and cryptic tale about legends coming true, "The Selkie Spell" by Sophie Moss was a great break from reality. Told in alternating perspectives, it gives a glimpse into the rich mythological history of Ireland through a modern day lens. If you thought "Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty" had it tough, wait until you hear the legend of the Selkies of Seal Island. When a man steals the pelt of an Irish Selkie, or seal maiden, he has power over her for the rest of her life! "The Selkie Spell" delves into this myth head first, and tracks down a small town full of really big characters who all live and work together to form a real community. Even newcomer Tara finds a place within the town, healing her soul and her spirit from a dark past. However, her past may soon come back to haunt her. She struggles to discover her heritage among the people of Seal Island, all the while building a family and a romance that allows her to withstand the demons that come back to haunt her.

This book was a hauntingly beautiful mythological adaptation. I am a huge fan of myths being brought to modern times, and "The Selkie Spell" has been one of the best I have read. Though the pacing is a bit odd the plot seems to plod along as the romance burst out of nowhere. I found myself captivated by the beautiful scenery and enjoying the heartbreaking but moving story that drove the novel. A very enjoyable book for those who love thrillers, romance, history and drama!

"The Cow that Mooed Boo", by Catherine Leininger, is an adorable romp and the perfect story to celebrate differences. With illustrations by Mike Motz, "The Cow that Mooed Boo" is a colorful tale that is sure to bring smiles and laughter from all readers. Poor little Blue just doesn’t do what a cow is expected to do. One day the farmer hears his cows, “One moo, two moo, three moo, boo,” and is disappointed to hear little Blue’s boo. Though she tries to do as her farmer tells her, she can only boo instead of moo. When Blue can no longer take the ridicule of her farmer and the other cows she decides to run away. Will the farmer and other cows realize what they have lost? Will they be able to find Blue and accept her into their home just the way she is?

Leininger’s storybook is a wonderful story to teach kids the importance of acceptance. This book will teach a child that being different is not a bad thing and that instead of pushing people away for their differences, we should instead embrace them just the way they are. Sometimes our differences are what make us unique and are the very things that make others love us. "The Cow that Mooed Boo" should be in every daycare and kindergarten classroom. With a simple “boo”, Catherine Leininger teaches us to let our differences shine. The world would be a boring place without a few “boos” in a world full of “moos.”

The book “The Clock of Life” by Nancy Klann-Moren is the powerful story of a boy, Jason Lee, growing up in the South where racism was still very common. Jason Lee, a strong-minded White boy, never conformed to the ideas which prevailed in Mississippi throughout his upbringing. He always looked for answers about why things were the way they were. He also developed a deep friendship with Samson, a Black boy, who later on ended up being his best friend. This friendship led him to numerous adventures and discoveries. Most important of all, it led him to unveil a past that was not clearly disclosed during his childhood: the story of J.L. Rainey, Jason Lee´s father, who was part of the civil rights movement and fought during the Vietnam War. The more Jason Lee dug down, the more he was able to connect the pieces of the puzzle and link to what was happening to him in the present. When he thought he was getting all the answers he wanted, an incident happened making him determined to change the course of his life forever.

I consider “The Clock of Life” a youth masterpiece. Nancy Klann- Moren made the story and the characters reflect the life in the South during the 70´s. It felt I was immersed in the lives of those who lived during the Civil Rights Movement. The descriptions, Southern regionalism and folktale used in the story made it delightful and powerful. Without going deep into the Civil Rights Movement, Klann-Moren brought up glimpses of what happened in the March from Selma to Montgomery. She gives a true history lesson, and her inclusion of historical events in her novel made the book more vivid. I personally loved it and recommend it to anyone looking for a light, fresh, and cultural (historical) reading.

"The Heidelberg Project" is a depiction of art in a community. These projects have all been created through a program run by Tyree Guyton to beautify the streets of his hometown. Looking at normal household objects and things that are often seen as litter typically doesn’t make us think of art. But when they are put together in the way you can see in this book it really can be. Linda McLean’s book is about the uses of just about anything to create artwork and the ways that beauty can be created out of nothing at all.

Though this book is primarily a picture book of the many different artistic displays located in Detroit, Michigan, it is also a collection of poems to describe each project. I enjoyed looking through the different images to see what types of art had been created around the town. McLean has created a beautiful book of art made out of everything from old vacuum cleaners to graffiti and everything in between. You will definitely be amazed at what has been accomplished in "The Heidelberg Project" and what a small group of people can do when they put their mind to beautifying their city. Beauty and art can be all around you if you just open your eyes to see it. The old adage is true, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and for me, this is definitely beauty on the streets of a rundown neighborhood in what has not always been seen as the best area of the country.

It has been barely a day since Carol arrived at the dome, and she already witnesses an eerie banishment scene of a Sashurai named Vanguard. Little by little, she will discover the conspiracy that involves the military leader General Kuromori and a woman named Eve. Author Shaun Penney delivers his stunning debut novel “The Death of Eve”, a story about the world’s post-apocalyptic future that drives mankind to isolation and struggles to maintain order.

Reading about a dystopian world is not always pleasant, but Mr. Penney definitely made it worthwhile and bearable. His deep knowledge about swords is evident; thus that part of the story was exceptionally well-written. The descriptions are very detailed: a writing quality that I always appreciate as a reader, leading to a futuristic world that is easy to imagine. On the whole, the plot is very well-thought-out and free from burdensome description. There are some explicit parts of this book that will be hard to read for some readers. The characters, main and secondary, are equally well-developed although I was mostly gravitated to Carol Jenn, as she was the most memorable one to me. I was disappointed with the fate of one of the characters in the story; even so I won’t spoil the content for the sake of other readers. A solid read that will satisfy sci-fi fans, and will continue to do so as the second volume of this intriguing saga is already available for quite a while.

“If you want to eliminate suffering in the world, eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself.” That is a powerful statement that is only part of the wisdom Victor Byrd shares with readers in “The Bare Bones of the Buddha’s Teaching”. This book works through the components of Buddhist beliefs complete with the 12 Nidanas and the framework for raising ourselves out of ignorance and misery, the 8 Fold Path. Byrd clearly leads the reader through the content of the teachings of Buddha and how they apply to our lives today with the practice of mindfulness and a study of how to elevate our humanity by understanding the true nature of ourselves. With a strong background in traditional psychology and philosophy, he helps to bridge the gap between centuries of ‘Western Thinking’ and the Eastern traditions that spawned the Buddhist movement and spread it throughout the East.

As an introduction to Buddhist thought and practices, “The Bare Bones of the Buddha’s Teaching” is quite thorough and filled with stories, quotes and references to a wide variety of sources that illustrate in Western terms what the Buddha taught to his followers over 2,500 years ago. Without any condemnation or rejection of any other religious doctrine, the key elements to achieving Enlightenment or Awakening are carefully explained. In fact, Byrd cites examples of statements and lessons of other prophetic and messianic figures including Jesus' and Muslim writings. Byrd provides readers with a blueprint for developing an understanding of this complex system of beliefs that is intended to lead to further study and a personal quest for the serenity that comes from learning how to rise above the pettiness of our everyday lives.
