Non-Fiction - Inspirational

Property of the Revolution by Ana Hebra Flaster is a memoir of Flaster's family life in Cuba before, during, and after the Cuban Revolution. Growing up in Havana, she recalls the vibrant community that was torn apart by politicking. Her family, especially her mother, faced growing disillusionment with the revolution, while her aunt remained a steadfast supporter. In 1967, Flaster’s family was forced to leave Cuba, enduring interrogations and hardships as they resettled in Miami. They later moved to New York, where Flaster’s father worked tirelessly to support them despite issues with other Cuban exiles. Flaster’s mother worked factory jobs, and their cultural adjustments were marked by difficult financial struggles. The family eventually settled in New Hampshire, where strain, poverty, and harsh winters followed. The memoir intertwines personal experiences with reflections on the impact of exile, generational trauma, and the immigrant journey in America.
Ana Hebra Flaster’s Property of the Revolution is a beautifully intimate and raw portrayal of a family’s survival under Cuba’s oppressive regime. Through clear and straightforward storytelling, Flaster captures the harsh realities of rationing, the black market, and the emotional toll of exile, as well as the problems that often accompany immigrant experiences. As a person who moved from a non-English speaking third-world country myself, I connected with Flaster in a way that I didn't expect. Her literary portrait of culture shock, especially between her Cuban roots and her American life, is so on point that it came across as not just relatable, but personal. It does end well, although I won't give away how, but readers are so fortunate to have such a strong voice on the Cuban-American experience. This memoir is bigger than a historical account; it is a deeply emotional journey of self-discovery and healing. Very highly recommended.

The Girls: From Golden to Gilmore by Stan Zimmerman is one of the most enjoyable backstage tours of the television and movie industries that I have ever read. Stan is definitely an excellent and entertaining writer who documents his journey from high school in Southfield, Michigan through his professional career, highlighting the ups and downs of the industry. It is a very personal account of his experience as well as the challenges of working as a writer, showrunner, stage director, and playwright, and the many facets that are involved. There are the highs and lows in working with some of the most well-known productions such as the Golden Girls series with some amazing stars; the Gilmore Girls series where he risked his job in speaking with the actors; the Brady Bunch movie where he met his favorite Marcia-Marcia-Marcia actress; and the Rosanne series where he was given a No. 13 T-shirt so that he and others could be fired without getting to know their names.
There are so many interesting stories in The Girls: From Golden to Gilmore about well-known stars and Stan's adventures working with them. So much was happening behind the scenes that the average viewer never could imagine. He also shares special stories about his family (especially his mother) and friends, which are very touching. Stan Zimmerman speaks very candidly about his personal life, having to pitch ideas for shows in the hope that a pilot would be picked up, and sometimes not being sure where the next show would come from. The narrative is told with great description and humor where he grows as a writer and a professional. It is clearly a challenging business but one that he is passionate about. I highly recommend The Girls: From Golden to Gilmore by Stan Zimmerman for anyone interested in the background of the entertainment industry. A very enjoyable read!

Non-Fiction - Marketing

Elizabeth Chabe wrote The Giant's Ladder to assist scientists and engineers in marketing their work. Some of the concepts that Chabe writes about are understanding the market, creating a brand, developing a campaign, and deciding where to direct marketing messages. The book includes numerous examples, both hypothetical and actual cases, that worked or will work in successful marketing. There are sections on ethics, public speaking, and other aspects of marketing that are often overlooked by some who write about the topic. Chabe makes liberal use of bullet points, subheads, numbered lists, pull quotes, and white space to make her ideas easy to understand. There are also key takeaways at the end of each chapter to help readers remember what they’ve learned. The author is the CEO of a company that specializes in helping scientists and engineers to effectively market their work.
I’ve read many marketing books, and The Giant's Ladder is one of the best. Elizabeth Chabe provides extremely detailed ideas and step-by-step instructions about marketing. I liked that she emphasizes marketers understanding who their audience is as well as what they want and need. I also liked her liberal use of good writing techniques, such as plenty of white space, numbered points, and end-of-chapter summaries. The section on public speaking is superb and would be of value to anyone who must or wants to speak to an audience. Although Chabe writes for scientists and engineers, this book would be excellent for anybody who wants to market themselves, their organization, or their business. Chabe doesn’t gloss over the fact that effective marketing is hard work and may not always provide a return on investment. But those who follow the advice in her book will find it much easier to do the work of marketing.
