The Whistle of Revenge by KD Sherrinford is a captivating historical mystery that draws inspiration from the world of renowned detective Sherlock Holmes and the talented Irene Adler, set against the evocative backdrop of Milan, Italy. Jack Stapleton is a man consumed by revenge, and he will do anything to achieve it. So, with the help of the Italian mafia, he kidnaps Holmes’s son as part of Operation Whistle. The abduction of Nicco shatters the idyllic life that Sherlock and Irene have enjoyed after years of marriage and shared adventures. The narrative follows their journey from the romantic serenity of a Venetian holiday to the dark and dangerous pursuit of the kidnappers, revealing a web of betrayal, espionage, and revenge. Can they rescue their son and unravel the dangerous web of crime and intrigue?

KD Sherrinford is a gifted storyteller. This author creates a tale of mystery filled with suspense and intrigue. The setting is meticulously detailed and stunningly executed. The author infuses a sense of the ominous in the setting, especially Venice and Milan, and also captures the cities’ allure. The characterization is excellent with Sherlock, a brilliant detective who has emotional flaws, and his wife, Irene, depicted as wise and consistent. The tension escalates as the conflict deepens, involving kidnappers with hidden motives, a web of deceit involving the criminal underworld, and personal betrayals that threaten to destroy Sherlock and Irene. The Whistle of Revenge is a well-delivered mystery that is as suspenseful as it is emotionally resonant.

Beneath the White Coats by Owen Parr follows former Wall Street executive turned crime novelist Jack Ryder, investigating the suspicious death of Dr. Everett Sullivan during cardiac surgery performed by his longtime friend, Dr. Samuel Kohn. Kohn is arrested for murder amid revelations of Sullivan’s affair with Kohn’s wife, Judy. Assisted by Dakota, a data forensics student, Jack uncovers inconsistencies in the case, including a hospital error that led to Sullivan’s cremation, eliminating forensic evidence. As the trial unfolds, Jack digs deeper into the surgical team’s actions, uncovering possible medication tampering, staff conflicts, and financial motives tied to the hospital’s for-profit transition. When Dakota disappears, Jack fights to rescue her as his team dives into possible conspiracies involving contaminated drugs, financial fraud, and multiple embolism deaths across hospitals.

Beneath the White Coats: A Jack Ryder Murder Mystery by Owen Parr is a spectacularly intensive thriller that is marked by its consistently clear and tightly precise writing, even for someone like me who has zero medical knowledge and can barely understand what WebMD throws at me. That said, as someone who works for the Justice Department in real life, the testimonies are spot-on. Parr does so well in balancing procedural elements with organic dialogue, with some real fist-pump moments during Ryder’s tense confrontations, the best coming along unexpectedly at the Miccosukee Reservation. The pacing is fast and perpetually anxiety-laced in the best possible way, whether it is a surgery complication or a chase through the swamp. Overall, this is a brilliant story and a polished and satisfying read, perfect for fans of procedural, medical, and action-packed crime fiction alike. Very highly recommended.

In The Weight of Guilt by Helen Starbuck, Annie Collins, now a private investigator, uses her nursing expertise to solve a mystery. Defense attorney Angel Cisnero, Annie's husband, is tasked with defending Mia Stewart, an operating room nurse, and his senior law partner's niece. Mia is suspected of brutally murdering a surgeon at the hospital where she works. Despite the victim being a known womanizer, evidence points to Mia, who had a motive, opportunity, and no alibi. Mia's arrogant and self-entitled demeanor may worsen her situation, but immense pressure from her uncle, Angel, must somehow secure an acquittal. He asks Annie and her partner Frost to investigate any evidence that could prove her innocence. Despite their efforts and the presence of other potential candidates with motives, this case poses a significant challenge that could jeopardize Angel's position at the firm.

A gripping suspense thriller, The Weight of Guilt is the fifth installment in The Annie Collins Mystery Series, but can be read independently. Helen Starbuck's character and plot development expertise shine through with gritty realism, especially in the meticulously detailed medical investigative components. By plunging readers into the characters' realities, the author leaves them uncertain as to who may be innocent and who is guilty. The relationship dynamics are portrayed authentically, ensuring readers connect with Annie's and Angel's challenges. The story moves at a measured pace, gradually building toward the gripping drama and mystery. Readers will be captivated as they wonder how the tale will unfold. With its clever twists and turns, the narrative surprises with an unexpected ending, while exploring themes of love, romance, trust, and justice. The Storm Within by Gill D. Anderson is a murder mystery set on a contemporary Mediterranean cruise ship, the Ocean Breeze. Like an Agatha Christie tale, a group of characters is in a closed setting so that when the killing occurs, we are trying to figure out the culprit from a limited list of those motivated to have done the dirty deed. The author explores in detail the psychological backgrounds of each character’s past. Some characters are dissected before the crime and some after, and it’s clear that the author is trained in the field. The first characters we meet are Jake, the handsome young cruise director; Claire, his girlfriend of the moment; Vincent, an embittered and vengeful assistant; and Tia, a sexy young hustler who comes on to older men whom she and her pimp Tony blackmail. And so the list of future suspects grows.

I marveled at Gill D. Anderson’s skill in managing the extensive character list and their interrelationships while at the same time weaving in the exciting cruise atmosphere, food, entertainment, and several stops along the way such as Florence and Rome. When the murder finally takes place and investigators arrive, I was aware of the various rivalries and haters among the cast who might be the culprit. Then, as we are trying to figure it out, the author reveals the psychological backgrounds of the cast that might have led to the victim’s demise and also to the killer’s motivation. These background profiles are detailed and fascinating, leading to one of the novel’s profound queries: “Do we ever know anyone?” as everyone has deep psychological issues that they keep hidden but which account for their outward behavior. The Storm Within will keep you on your toes figuring out the killer and their motive. All the elements of a superb mystery and psychological thriller come together in a book I couldn’t put down.

Donnie is an ex-cop who runs a blog and gets all kinds of requests. In Justice For The Forgotten by R. Weir, he gets one request that catches his eye, and, after a few replies, he decides to meet with the Riveras to hear about their case. After the meetup and some inquiries, Donnie realizes that the details of the case are fishy, from the intimidations to the shoddy investigations by Officer Warren. Enzo Rivera used to work in Rio Celeste before his untimely murder. The town of Rio Celeste is full of mysteries. They have their own paramilitary and do not recognize the authority of the state or federal government. How is everything connected, and will they succeed in stopping Donnie from continuing the investigation to give the Riveras the closure that they deserve?

Justice For The Forgotten by R. Weir is a must-read! The writing is engaging and filled with well-crafted dialogue that brings the story and the well-developed characters to life. I loved the mystery and how Weir utilized suspense to great effect, which kept me on the edge of my seat and looking forward to the events of subsequent chapters. This thought-provoking work also got me thinking about the criminal justice system and how sometimes access to justice can be denied. The plot flowed seamlessly, leaving no room for confusion, and the reader will also appreciate the excellent narration, which adds to the overall beauty of this work. This was an amazing read, and I look forward to reading something else by this talented author.

Shadow of the Eternal Watcher by Josh Mendoza is a gritty, mind-bending sci-fi noir following Duster Raines, a former soldier turned PI haunted by demons, both real and imagined. Tormented by combat memories and disturbing alternate reality visions, Raines is thrust into a missing persons case that soon spirals into a government conspiracy. Framed and hunted, he discovers he possesses the power to manipulate space and time. With these newfound abilities, he sees a chance to build the life he’s always wanted, but first, he must face a darker, alternate version of himself. This genre-blending tale combines crime, sci-fi, and psychological suspense into a compelling read.

Author Josh Mendoza has heaps of style on display in this skillful blend of detective fiction with speculative sci-fi, creating a gritty, atmospheric story. I loved Duster Raines right from the start, and his internal struggles with guilt, trauma, and self-doubt make him a compelling and layered character that you want to see succeed, even when he's not making the best decisions. For a story that is quite conceptually complex, the narrative structure is tight and unfolds the plot without overcomplicating it. The alternate realities and time-space manipulation add a captivating twist to the events and keep the clues coming from unexpected angles. Even in individual scenes, there's a relentless tension that holds you, with a confident skill that I can't wait to see more of in future books. Overall, Shadow of the Eternal Watcher is a fantastic read that I highly recommend for both noir and sci-fi fans looking for an accomplished mystery.

The Pendant & The Prophecy is the second book in The Forbidden Tears Series by Sam Withrow and Amelia Pinkis. The trials and tribulations of Brianna Weldon and her guardian angel, Cameron, continue as they face yet more challenges. After barely surviving a deadly attack, Brie and Cameron were shocked to get a surprise visit from Ephriam that further complicated things for them. Being summoned to the Elysium was the least of their worries. The mystery of Brie’s pendant, the powers it gave her, and Cameron’s past endeavors were all causes of worry for Brie, Cameron, and their friends. The Elysium was powerful, and Brie had no reason to believe they would let her keep the pendant. Humans weren’t supposed to know about Elysium or see angels. Was there a way out of trouble for them? Or was this the end of the road?

A perfect epic fantasy, The Pendant & The Prophecy was a delight to read. I took my time reading this novel, and I’m glad I did. The story was gripping, the characters were incredible, and the narrative was simply great. The humor, the action, and the overall feel of the story were fantastic. Authors Sam Withrow and Amelia Pinkis made sure the characters were memorable, and the pace was right. A multiple-POV narrative style brought the story to life, and the vivid imagery ensured that readers were fully invested. I loved Cameron and his hard exterior. He created a strong front, but he wasn’t afraid to share his vulnerabilities with Brie. Brie, on the other hand, was strong and reliable. The two created a great pair, and I enjoyed their interactions a lot. However, it was Ephraim whom I loved the most. He matched the characters' wit with wit and was a fierce ally. I was lost in the story and the growth of the characters. I loved it, to say the least!

Nicholas Varner’s Warriors of the Red Wolf is a beautiful, captivating young adult novel that immerses readers in a vibrant, mythical world influenced by legends and the timeless battle between good and evil. The story unfolds through the voice of Uncle Ho-e, whose storytelling transports readers into the lives of a nomadic tribe seeking a new home amid trials, betrayals, and revelations. With elements of magic, loyalty, and cultural heritage, this richly woven tale will appeal to young readers and those young at heart. The narrative is framed as a story passed down to younger generations, emphasizing themes of oral tradition and the preservation of cultural identity. Ho-e’s warmth and humor as a storyteller balance the intensity of the challenges faced by the tribe. Central to the plot is Mia, a gifted young leader who embodies resilience and wisdom as she interprets the whispers of the Sacred Wind. Her journey, alongside characters like Tumas the healer, the comical yet courageous Ho-e, and loyal canines Yoni and Yote, adds depth and relatability to the epic quest.

The imagery is striking, painting landscapes of arid deserts, lush grasslands, and towering mountains with poetic prose. Nicholas Varner skillfully explores universal themes such as the cost of greed, the value of unity, and the sacrifices made for the greater good. While grounded in folklore, the story also conveys timely messages about humanity’s connection to nature and the importance of trust and community. The pacing, world-building, plot, and character development are well-drawn, and Varner excels at weaving mythical worlds deeply rooted in cultural traditions and oral storytelling. Warriors of the Red Wolf will appeal to readers of Le Guin, Momaday, and anyone who enjoys a good book with poetic prose and vivid imagery. It’s a timeless book to pass down the generations and an excellent addition to middle school libraries.
