The protagonist in The Gatekeeper of Pericael by Haley Reese Chow, Porter, is your average boy, but he hides a secret. His mother is the gatekeeper of a portal between Earth and Pericael, a world of magic, spirits, and danger. His family is part of a long line of gatekeepers, but his cousin Ames is unaware of the family’s secret. Porter is Kotalla Kan and is destined to replace his mother. When Porter and Ames are alone in the house, there is a knocking on the door to Pericael. Unable to contact his mother and unsure what to do, Porter opens the door, and the two boys encounter danger. When the evil shaman, Raspurn, attacks, Porter struggles to keep him at bay. The shaman is driven through a portal to an unknown part of the land, drawing Ames and Porter with it. Lost in the dangerous, wild, and jungled land, the two boys are racing against time to reach the Gateway before Raspurn returns and breaks through the gate.

Haley Reese Chow has created a frighteningly alien world with magic, powerful spirits, and terrifying predators in The Gatekeeper of Pericael. We are instantly immersed in the action, with no let-up until the end. Porter doubts his ability, but Ames is pragmatically sure they will succeed despite all the odds against them. I enjoyed the interplay between the boys and the two sisters, Conri and Fira. Despite Fira's animosity and scorn, they are tasked with helping the boys. This is an excellent read for young adults who enjoy fantasy. It is fast-paced and one I highly recommend.

In The Girl Who Makes A Million Mistakes, we are introduced to a little girl named Millie who can never seem to get things right, no matter how hard she tries. From missing the cup when she’s pouring a drink to using too much glue in a project, poor Millie just can’t win. This affects the sports that she participates in at school. Millie wants more than anything to be an athlete, but she messes up there. During a school race, instead of leaping over each hurdle, she ends up running straight through them. She jumps and falls on her face, then on her bottom, making mistakes with each hurdle. But this little girl is determined and makes sure that she practices so the next time she races she will be ready and win, which she does.

I found The Girl Who Makes A Million Mistakes: A Growth Mindset Book for Kids to Boost Confidence, Self-Esteem and Resilience such a wonderful read. Millie, the small star of the book, is very relatable and the story conveys such a strong message to our children: to never give up. People make mistakes but you keep on going. Even though Millie messes up repeatedly and comes close to giving up, she never does. Instead, she practices and finally succeeds thanks to her hard work. The illustrations are also so beautiful and fit perfectly with the storyline. Brenda Li has done an amazing job with this book and I cannot wait to read more of her work.

The Snow Monster by Jodi Dee is a picture book for young children that tells an unusual story of a young girl named Amia who made a wish on her birthday. Amia loved snow and her wish was to be able to eat all the snow in the world. Amia couldn't believe that her wish had been granted and headed outside to use her new superpower. But unfortunately for Amia, her neighbors reacted badly to her eating all the snow as there wasn't any left for the other children to play in. Amia was banned from going outside in the winter and had to spend her birthdays indoors, watching the other children playing happily outdoors. One day, the town went into emergency mode, and Amia's power was needed to save her neighbors. What do you think happened to the neighborhood? Find out in this charming book.

The Snow Monster by Jodi Dee was a pleasure to read. It is unlike any other story that I've encountered, and that's what kept me interested. I was more intrigued with each page I read. I loved every word and I know children will too. The writing is simple yet descriptive, which allows you to easily imagine the scenes in your head. The illustrations by Chandrani Das are adorable and gave me a Christmassy feel. This book will make the perfect bedtime story or boredom breaker. Children are going to love it and I hope I get the chance to read more from this incredible author soon. Keep up the great work, Jodi, and stay creative.

At The Edge Of The Ice is penned by author Carolyn Armstrong in the adventure, climate fiction, and animal life subgenres. It is the first book in the Eco Warriors series. The work is intended for independent readers in the 10 to 12 years range. Eleven-year-old Sydney Cabella, known for talking to animals, embarks on a transformative journey with her family to Svalbard, near the North Pole. After a head injury, Sydney discovers she can now understand animals, leading her to communicate with a ringed seal named Ringo. Ringo urgently seeks Sydney's help to address the ecosystem's collapse due to habitat loss and global warming. With just 72 hours left in the Arctic, Sydney and her twin sister Sierra must decipher Ringo's messages and clues to save the environment. As they encounter polar bears and other wildlife, Sydney realizes the interconnectedness of all life forms and the importance of taking action to protect their habitat.

Author Carolyn Armstrong has crafted an engaging and enjoyable novel that offers a heartfelt eco-adventure highlighting the impact of climate change on habitats and the power of small actions. Sydney's ability to communicate with animals is so well incorporated into the dialogue and narrative style, adding a magical realism element to the story and engaging readers on a personal level in understanding the plight of wildlife in the face of climate change. The book effectively conveys complex environmental issues in a relatable and accessible manner, encouraging children to consider their role in protecting the planet. The pacing and twists of the events retain the reader's interest and excitement from cover to cover. Through Sydney's journey, the narrative emphasizes the significance of empathy, cooperation, and proactive steps in addressing environmental challenges. Overall, At The Edge Of The Ice is an inspiring tale that educates and empowers young readers to become stewards of the Earth, and I would certainly recommend it.

The Reaper's Guide on How NOT to Take a Soul! by Charles Byrd follows Lyra, a girl training to be a Grim Reaper under the mentorship of Silas. Lyra's eagerness for promotion leads to mishaps, the biggest being the breaking of her lantern, which leaves the soul of a boy named Casper detached, unable to get back into his body or transition to the afterlife. With the pair in the Underworld, chased by Soul Eaters and haunted by actual ghosts, they seek answers about Casper's state and how to fix it. After being told where to go to help Casper, they are forced to navigate the treacherous terrain of the Underworld. Along the way, they're tested in their resolve and ability
not to be separated, and worse. It is also a test for Lyra, as family secrets crush everything she thought she knew about herself and those she trusted most.

In The Reaper's Guide on How NOT to Take a Soul!, Charles Byrd crafts a wonderfully detailed world in The Beyond, where Grim Reapers, and young apprentice Lyra in particular, coexist with supernatural elements like ghost cats and whispering portraits. I loved the journey of Lyra and poor Casper into the Greek Afterlife and the integration of classical mythology with Byrd's own brand of what the afterlife holds to mix it all up with unexpected twists. As far as the writing goes, it is clean and accessible to readers, with standouts to me as an adult being the clever use of metaphors in prose that often sing: "The water embraced me like the cold hands of death itself, swallowing me in its cool darkness." I loved these physical descriptions with themes of death and the overall balance of haunting elements with humor, ensuring the fear factor never overwhelms and instead transforms the tale into an adventurous journey. Very highly recommended.

In The Only Me by Marissa Bader, we are introduced to a set of twins that couldn’t be more different. Stella loves to dress up in frilly dresses and outfits while her sister is more of a tomboy and prefers to wear t-shirts and leggings. Many people don’t understand why the girls are so different and that frustrates Stella. She also doesn’t care much about being lumped together with her sister. It makes her feel as if she isn’t seen for who she is and is a separate person from Paige. This often causes Stella to feel that she isn’t good enough or cannot compare to her sister. Paige is good at so many things like sports, handwriting, and having more friends. Stella’s big brother Robby helps her to see that she has many talents that her twin sister does not. She realizes that she’s good at art, puzzles, and ballet while her sister is less so. That makes Stella happy as she has strengths that make her distinctive and more than just Paige’s twin sister.

I thought that The Only Me is a great book that so many kids can relate to. I think a lot of us have a sibling that just seems to be good at everything. Stella is such an adorable character who just wants to be seen for who she is and not compared to her twin the way so many people tend to do. The illustrations are colorful and adorable and fit perfectly with the storyline. Marissa Bader has written a grand book and I can’t wait to see what other works will follow.

The Gratitude Jar is a children’s picture book written by Katrina Liu and illustrated by Bella Ansori. It tells the story of Mina, a young girl who learns to appreciate the simple things in life through a daily gratitude practice with her family. After attending a friend's party, Mina complains about not getting a pink bracelet, not having a big house like her friend, and having leftovers for dinner. Her mother notices her ungrateful behavior continues even the next day, so she introduces Mina to a gratitude jar, where she and her family write and draw things they are thankful for each day. Through this daily practice, Mina begins to shift her focus to the good things in life and starts to feel happier, recognizing the many blessings she has with her family.

The Gratitude Jar celebrates the importance of gratitude and appreciation, teaching kids to have a positive mindset and attitude. Inspired by the author's children, Mina and Leah, the story features Asian representation and introduces readers to an interesting and relatable cast of characters, helping kids develop emotional skills and strengthen their core values. Katrina Liu presents the lessons in a way that is relatable to young readers. By using a friendly tone and simple words, children can easily follow the story and enjoy getting to know the characters. The colorful illustrations perfectly complement the story and bring it to life. Small details like the family meals and the cozy home decor add a sense of warmth and intimacy to the story. The art also cleverly conveys the emotions and personalities of the characters, making it easy for young readers to connect with them. I enjoyed reading this book and recommend sharing it with your children.

The Talented Pretzel is a children's book by Megan Morales. Pretzel Peyton is concerned when her teacher, Mr. Macaroni, assigns a project for the talent show and encourages Peyton and her classmates to reveal their special talents. As a linear, lightly salted snack, Peyton doesn't believe she possesses a unique skill, so she worries about her presentation. On her way home, though, she encounters friends who need assistance, and she helps them cross rivers, retrieve balls from inside logs, and get down from trees. When Mr. Macaroni calls her to the front of the class, Peyton is ready to hang her head in shame as she talks about her lack of skills, but her classmates have something to say about her that makes Peyton's presentation different.

Megan Morales delivers thoughtful and relatable characters who she calls "snackies". The fun illustrations are paired perfectly with the text, and the characters handle Peyton's unease with kindness. Children who may be lacking self-confidence can gain an alternate perspective by reading this story. Educators can share the story in classrooms to motivate classmates to bolster one another the same way Peyton's peers supported her; caregivers can read the book with the confidence that it is a wholesome story that promotes compassion. Peyton shows humility, and it's a desirable trait. Her character inspires children to do things for others without a thought to how they might benefit from it. The Talented Pretzel is a great selection for youngsters who may need their self-esteem boosted.

But Zoey's happy life has one constant annoyance in the form of Trudy Jacobs, who uses every opportunity to embarrass Zoey in front of her classmates. Moreover, stuff belonging to Zoey and her classmates keeps disappearing from Mrs. Pennington's class, which Zoey blames on the sticky finger bandit. Meanwhile, Zoey's older sister Jasmine has a secret admirer. As the day of the Briar Ridge Elementary annual talent show comes closer, Zoey and her friends decide to train and seek direction from her mother, who used to be a member of her university dance team.
