Enticing the Earl

Romance - Historical

The third book of The Arrogant Earls series, Enticing the Earl focuses on Oleana Honeywell and Lord Jason Montieth. Author Kathleen Ayers portrays Oleana’s quandary as a housekeeper who doesn’t know how to do the job. She is a vicar’s widow and the owner of a large farm that her in-laws want. Her grandmother gave her a recommendation letter from the aunt of Lord Monteith, but Oleana shows up and presents the letter to the arrogant butler, Wilbert. She gains the affection of Elizabeth Monteith, and Lord Monteith notices Elizabeth’s happiness has improved; he starts to see Oleana is quite desirable, and the possibility of a romantic connection may exist. However, he knows something is off about what Oleana has told him.
Oleana’s clumsiness constantly draws unwanted attention, especially from the snide butler. Wilbert was just plain snobby, and I felt he overstepped boundaries by constantly chastising her. Carrot the cat was a wildcard, as the feline seems to use Montieth’s private study as the perfect place to hide. I loved how endearing Elizabeth appears to be; having lost her mother when she was young, she is polite and caring. Lord Montieth’s actions with Oleana increase the tension throughout the story. One moment he is passionate towards her and the next, he is berating her. Oleana’s hidden secrets become Lord Montieth’s focus and this engrossed me in the story. The supporting characters filled the house with rumors and influenced the unpredictable direction of the story. Enticing The Earl by Kathleen Ayers will capture the hearts of readers who enjoy a light read with a little dramatic content.

Romance - Paranormal

The 5-Time Rejected Gamma and the Lycan King by Stina's Pen is a lengthy paranormal romance that is well worth the read and features compelling characters and a well-articulated conflict. In this novel, the destiny of two phenomenal characters is set on a collision course as love awakens in their hearts. The Lycan King Alexandar wields tremendous power, and the moment he sets eyes on Gamma Lucianne, he believes they are destined to be mated in a union ordained by the goddess. But Lucianne wants nothing to do with Alexandar, especially after having experienced heartache five times before with failed mate-bonds. She is determined not to give her heart to anyone - not even the king. There are also enemies who will do everything to make sure Lucianne never becomes the Queen, and this includes killing her. Alexandar will not take no for an answer while knowing that if he doesn’t protect her, he won’t even have the chance of a first meeting to propose.
This is an enthralling book with a stunningly imagined setting, a world brimming with conflict and intrigue. The Alphas and Lunas and the best warrior of each pack, called Gammas, spend their lives fending off attacks on the kingdom. Stina's Pen introduces Lucianne Freesia Paw right at the start of the story and arouses the interest of readers when the king is stunned by her beauty. The attraction is instant and Lucianne appears as an apparition in front of the King, “like his mate was already ten feet away when he had only taken the first step.” I wanted to see what would become of the two, and the author uses this to build suspense in the story. The Lycan king is a tortured man. Although invested with great power, he is unable to contain his desire for Lucianne, and the journey he makes to conquer her heart becomes the main plot point in this compelling narrative. In The 5-Time Rejected Gamma and the Lycan King, Stina's Pen shines in portraying the emotional conflict between Lucianne and the king, exploring their inner worlds with unique intelligence while introducing readers to exciting elements of the setting and memorable characters.

Romance - Sizzle

The Sins of a Farmgirl by C.T. Cait is set in small-town Cloverdale, Illinois, where Natalie Wilson faces a formidable challenge as the caretaker of her family farm following the untimely deaths of her parents. Motivated by her desire to support her brothers' aspirations, Natalie employs Jason Walker as a farmhand for assistance. Their undeniable chemistry results in massive desire but Natalie has always been 'family first' as a maternal figure to her brothers and their discontent at the pairing is felt deeply. Natalie yearns for companionship and finds it wearing a badge. Throughout it all there is a third man lurking in the background in the form of an ex that is never far off, and the problems that arise in the running of the farm escalate as the story hits fever pitch.
My mother used to joke that “it's only a sin if your dad finds out” which, ok, isn't exactly true but with her in the back of my mind, I reached for The Sins of a Farmgirl by C.T. Cait a little more rapidly than I may have otherwise. Thank goodness I did! The premise is heavy and what transpires as the story progresses is downright scary, and even though Natalie can be incredibly frustrating in the way she flutters through anything with the potential for a meaningful love life, the heart wants what the heart wants. It just does not always know what that is straightaway. Natalie is young but she has basically lived two or three lifetimes and as the mother to a young woman near the same age, I could understand how her being forced into circumstances of adulthood while still a teen herself would mean the organic emotional growth she would have is stunted. She and the men who chase her are fully developed, lifelike characters, and as a novel, this young adult rural romance is also perfect for those of us “of a certain age”. Very highly recommended.

Romance - Sizzle

After the Storm: Lost in Austin Book 3 by Christina Berry is the next installment of the award-winning Lost in Austin series. The story unravels in New Orleans, Louisiana where Greg Hendricks is on a business trip as a senior structural engineer and director of forensic inspections for Crawford and Son Engineering Services. Near the French Quarter, he comes across a theater called Paradise and, most unusually, gets to know the beautiful and unforgettable Violet Devollier. Nine months later, he is back in Austin, Texas, and the reality is that his wife who has requested an open marriage has fallen in love with another man and is leaving him. He resorts to drinking and eventually loses his job. Trying to rebuild his life with the help of good friends, he learns that Hurricane Katrina, a category three storm, will be making landfall in New Orleans. He decides to drive to New Orleans to find Violet. Can he find Violet and the courage to start a new life in a place ravaged by the hurricane?
Christina Berry’s After the Storm is a sizzling romance. I haven’t read the first and second installments of the series but it didn’t stop me from appreciating the narrative. Greg Hendricks is a vulnerable character and readers will be compelled to cheer him on as he picks up the broken pieces of his life. Violet, on the other hand, is an intriguing character mourning the loss of her father, her city, and her life after the devastation brought by Hurricane Katrina. It is in this emotionally charged setting that their love story unfolds, and it is an absorbing read. The physical and emotional relationship between them is equally as intense. This is a great read for fans of contemporary romance!

Romance - Suspense

In the Light of Day is a romance thriller by Lorana Hoopes. Eight years after his heartbreaking separation from his girlfriend, Deacon Jackson, a former cop turned firefighter, receives an unexpected call from Shonda Turner. Shonda is in trouble after witnessing a fentanyl deal, and now dangerous men follow her trail as she finds her life turned upside down. Struggling with her memories and being forced to attend therapy, Shonda doesn't know if she can continue working as a nurse at her current hospital. Deacon takes Shonda and her son, Dante, out of town for protection and calls in a few favors at the police department to investigate the case. Meanwhile, their relationship develops a new spark. Can Deacon ensure Shonda and her son's safety? Will they be able to get back together?
In the Light of Day is an engaging romance novel that blends suspense, intrigue, and mystery. Author Lorana Hoopes also infuses some underlying Christian themes into this drama that offer thrills galore. One of my favorite things about this book is how well-paced Hoopes' narrative is. From the beginning, you're thrown right into the scheme of things, and it is a non-stop ride from there on out. There is no fat or fluff to be found within the pages, and it makes for an easy read as you don't want to put the book down. I also liked the chemistry between Deacon and Shonda. Their relationship is the heart of the story, and it acts as the plot's anchor. Recommended to romance readers who also enjoy a slight tinge of suspense and mystery.

Romance - Suspense

The Roma's Claim (A Dark Roma Mafia Romance Book 1) by Shae Coon focuses on a payment owed to gypsies in 1960. When the gypsies healed Jolene, her mother had to give her to them after she recovered. Instead, Leandra fled Italy with Jolene to make a new start in America. Greta White was a descendant of Jolene. She had set up a Halloween gala to raise funds to end human trafficking. Her writing career as an author of romantic comedies had done well, but she wanted to try writing a dark romance. Emiliano Calvano was introduced to Greta at the gala. Unbeknownst to her, Emiliano had planned the meeting. Greta arrived at her home to find her faithful Doberman unconscious. She was hit by a dart and passed out. Greta woke up and discovered that she was on a plane headed for Italy and was at the mercy of Emiliano Calvano. She had to settle Leandra's debt by marrying Emiliano.
Shae Coon intensifies the tension and suspense with the dark desires Greta harbors. The alternating views of Greta and Emiliano show how they try to deny the growing passion they have for each other. Camil, a childhood friend of Emiliano's, was central to Greta accepting her situation. The vivid depiction of the inner conflict Greta felt is understandable. She wanted to hate Emiliano, but she could not deny her growing attraction to him. Emiliano's ability to go from being nice to a sadistic monster had me just as confused as Greta. However, there are moments when he shows redeeming qualities. Conversely, he is a Mafia boss who has bought the alliance of politicians and police officers. The unpredictable story held my attention throughout. I recommend The Roma's Claim (A Dark Roma Mafia Romance Book 1) to readers of Mafia romances that never have a dull moment.

Poetry - General

With the rapid destruction of Earth's ecosystem due to human impact, we must ensure that future generations learn from our mistakes and acquire the knowledge and wisdom to save the planet. Poetry collections like May We Learn From the Earth by Robert J. Tiess are one such step in the right direction. The collection opens with an ode to our planet, with the poem To Earth, Old Friend. From Carefree to Caring highlights the change in perspectives as we age and realize the damage humans have inflicted on the planet we call home. To the Susquehanna River reflects upon the eternal vitality of the Susquehanna River that commands respect from anyone who sees it. Finally, Emerging World contemplates the advent of potential life on a new blooming planet.
May We Learn From the Earth is a poetry collection for all nature lovers and poetry aficionados. Being environmentally conscious is no longer a choice but a necessity; this poetry collection clearly emphasizes that fact. Robert J. Tiess' free-flowing verses shed light on the importance of eco-preservation and remind us to be grateful and humble and respect the gifts nature and Earth have bestowed upon us. The last section contains additional content, including essays and insights on Earth, ecology, and eco-poetry. Again, Tiess uses his inspiring poetic verses to educate and illuminate us on increasingly relevant issues concerning humanity's present and future. This is the second book I've read by Tiess, and just like the first one, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

In The Girl and the Lock on Her Heart by Lauren Lee, a girl who lives by herself is on a mission to find the key that will fit the empty lock on her heart. One day, a boy who has a key to his heart explains what love is like to the girl and, inspired, she embarks on a quest to look for the key to her own heart. On her journey, she meets people who shower her with affection, and she constructs keys from artwork. She also expresses her love for the objects she possesses but still cannot find the key to her heart. The boy explains that love can also be found within, and after loving herself for the journey that she went on, the little girl receives the key to her own heart. Told like a fairy tale and with vibrant artwork, this is worth adding to your shelf.
I was blown away, first and foremost, by the stunning illustrations Lauren Lee designed for The Girl and the Lock on Her Heart. She truly brings the reader along on this adventure through her play with colors, detailed scenery, and unique style. I would read the book over again for the pictures alone; however, the written portion of the book is spectacular and certainly worth many re-reads as well. In both writing and imagery, this story is gentle with its readers. While the boy talks about the love he receives from his parents, the girl has no family to show her love to but discovers it herself. What a delicate way to demonstrate healing to children and adults who may not have had the benefit of a secure, loving environment. The language is simple enough for early grade school readers to follow on their own, and perfect for group story time.

Children

The Clumsy Chicken by Sue Elias is a charming children’s book about a red fluffy chicken named Chickie who is sweet, but clumsy. All her animal friends at the cozy barn would laugh when she fell or did something clumsy. Chickie continued being her clumsy self, but one day she packed up her bag and surprised all her animal friends by saying she was going to explore the world. She encountered many new animal friends like a fox, a squirrel, and a big rabbit band as her new friends taught her many new things like climbing and spreading her wings. Not once did her new friends laugh at her as she continued being her clumsy self. Returning back to her cozy barn, Chickie felt stronger and wiser as her old friends welcomed her back where she belonged.
Author Sue Elias and illustrator Remesh Ram spin a very delightful story that engages the reader with cute and colorful animals on every page. The scenes are very eye-catching throughout the whole book. The rhyming of the sentences brings giggles and fun for the whole family. At the same time, children are being taught how to value themselves. The Clumsy Chicken teaches very important lessons to young children about self-acceptance and self-love, despite being laughed at by your peers. Self-acceptance and self-love help foster self-esteem and self-confidence which are vital for developing a strong sense of identity and self for young ones.

A Snuggle Bug's Guide to Hearts in the Wild

Children

A Snuggle Bug’s Guide to Hearts in the Wild by Courtney Hanks reminds us that hearts come in many different shapes and sizes. Some are calm and some are wild. A Snuggle Bug should pay attention to what kind of heart they have come into contact with, so they know how to move forward. Some hearts are timid, and you may have to be slow and cautious with your snuggles. Some hearts are excitable, playful, and ready to snuggle anytime. What other kinds of hearts are there and what emotions decide if a heart is ready for the attention of a Snuggle Bug? How does a Snuggle Bug know whether they should snuggle a heart or wait patiently to see how the heart responds to them first?
This picture book will keep young children entertained and giggling while reading or being read to. This adorable story will help children understand how important it is to consider the feelings of others. The illustrations are fun and colorful and will keep children turning pages to see what kind of heart they will learn about next. I recommend A Snuggle Bug’s Guide to Hearts in the Wild by Courtney Hanks to young children who are learning how to read. I love that this book teaches children a basic understanding of kindness, compassion, and empathy that will help them recognize why people respond in different ways. I enjoyed everything about this story and hope that Hanks will create more picture books that set up the building blocks of education for young children as this one does.
