The Journey of a Hidden Child by Harry Pila is a historical biography and the latest installment in the Jewish Children in the Holocaust series. It follows the life of Jean-Pierre, a Jewish child given to non-Jewish parents for safety as the Nazis round up the Jews for forced labor and extermination. But Jean-Pierre’s adoptive parents are spies for the British, placing him in more danger than his birth parents could have realized. As the war ends, Jean-Pierre’s surviving parent returns to claim him, beginning a new journey of self-reflection.

Of all the evil acts that human beings have done to each other, few can compete with the magnitude and horror of the Holocaust. What happened should never be forgotten, but with victims numbering in the millions, it is important to reflect on the impact of this event on a more personal level and the devastation that it unleashed upon individual families. Harry Pila’s powerful prose and nuanced understanding of the period together create an authentic and heartbreaking portrayal of the life of one family as they are shattered by the Nazi regime and left with the impossible task of healing in the aftermath. The authenticity that flows from every page serves as a timeless and poignant reminder of a part of history that must never be allowed to repeat itself. Overall, The Journey of a Hidden Child bravely and eloquently shows not just the cause of the pain but the long and difficult road to try to heal from it.

The Apprentice of Buchenwald is a true World War II story of a Jewish family trying to navigate life under the Nazi regime. Oren Schneider lost his father at an early age and grew up listening to the stories of his grandfather's life during the war. As a teenager, his grandfather Alexander Rosenberg was an avid collector of stamps, growing up in a privileged home on the outskirts of a Slovakian town in the late 1930s. After the Slovakian Gestapo started rounding up Jews for the Nazi regime, the Rosenbergs had no choice but to leave their home and assume false identities for life elsewhere. But a cruel twist of fate put Alexander and his father into the largest concentration camp, Buchenwald, in Germany, where the father and son duo had to survive each day at a time.

Author Oren Schneider shares the horrors and sacrifices of the victims of Nazi Germany with this heartbreaking true story of his own family. The Apprentice of Buchenwald is a tale that celebrates the resilient spirit of humans against adversity and showcases how a combination of the will to survive and indomitable courage can sometimes provide people with tools to overcome even the direst of circumstances. This is a very personal and intimate story about war, family, and the fight to survive. Schneider never holds back and gives an honest and authentic glimpse into war and its devastating ramifications. I found Alexander's story truly moving and poignant, and I feel it couldn't be more relevant to our times with the recent rise of fascist ideologies all over the world. Highly recommended.

The Lightning Tamers by Kathy Joseph is the history of the men and women who have worked with electricity, from discovering its existence to its place in our modern life. The book begins with the early realization of what electricity is and how it was named. It continues with how scientists and inventors began to use electricity for practical purposes like building batteries and creating methods of communication, such as the telegraph and the telephone. The book is written around the stories of people who contributed to the understanding and use of electricity, such as Benjamin Franklin, Michael Faraday, Thomas Edison, and many more. There is a summary of each chapter, and the book is illustrated with pictures of significant contributors to the harnessing of electricity and drawings of their early electrical experiments. The book concludes with an extensive list of references and a comprehensive index.

The Lightning Tamers by Kathy Joseph is an amazing and fascinating book. Anyone interested in history or who wonders how mankind learned to harness electricity will find it hard to put down. It was interesting to learn the stories of the people whose names are behind terms everyone is familiar with, such as “volt” and “amp.” Readers don’t need to be a scientist or an expert in any of Joseph's topics because the book is written in easy-to-understand language. It is also extraordinarily well-researched. Joseph is a former teacher, and I can see this book as an invaluable textbook for high school or college students. I highly recommend it to teachers, students, and everyone who wants a well-written explanation of the intriguing topic of electricity.

Behind the Green Apron by R. L. Farrar is a non-fiction professional memoir in which the author details some of their most interesting stories working for twelve years as a Starbucks barista. Baristas are the coffee chain's front-of-house staff, the employees who facilitate the running of the shop, and all that encompasses making our favorite drinks. Over the course of nearly two dozen chapters, Farrar shares experiences that range from the good, such as the woman who quite brilliantly figures out how to save a dollar on her drink by ordering off-menu; the bad, like the order with 24 packets of white sugar; and the ugly, which comes in the form of people like the overbearing customer who casually openly carries a gun at his hip.

An Uber driver, a mobile app user, and a guy named Bimbo walk into a Starbucks... Oh, have you already heard this one? Probably not, as the cornucopia of stories R. L. Farrar recalls in Behind the Green Apron is unique not only to those who work in the service industry but specifically to the foot soldiers who churn out coffee and grab-and-go treats. The writing style is conversational and relaxed, which suits the tone of its narrative really well. There are some bits where I actually did think the barista was in the wrong and the tenor can occasionally push beyond witty sarcasm into condescension. Still, the book overall is heaps of fun and has a wonderfully fair share of jaw-dropping experiences. The drink recipes at the end are an unexpected delight and make me want to go right out and get a Paradise drink. I promise not to make eight customization requests.

Under the Naga Tail: A True Story of Survival, Bravery, and Escape from the Cambodian Genocide is a work of non-fiction in the memoir, cultural and psychological subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience for its strong (though non-graphic) content and written by Mae Bunseng Taing with James Taing. As the title suggests, the work conveys the harrowing experience of living through the regime of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, detailing the life of the teenage Mae as he faces wild landscapes to escape his captors. Eventually stranded as a refugee and separated from his family, Mae only has his faith in a brighter tomorrow to help him survive.

Mae Bunseng Taing has partnered wonderfully with his son James Taing to bring this heartfelt and emotionally raw story to life. It encapsulates the life-threatening tension and constant strain in the atmosphere when a person must live under such extreme and fearful conditions. And yet, there’s a beautiful tenderness to the narrative that allows Mae’s bright personality to shine through, offering perspectives of incredible hope and light despite the dark times of his youth and formative years as a young adult especially. This story provides a deeper understanding of the horrifying realities of the Cambodian genocide, allowing privileged readers a better grasp of these incomprehensible horrors. I recommend that people from all walks of life read Under the Naga Tail for its accomplished writing style and to improve their cultural awareness.

What makes a successful memoir, one that others outside your immediate family might want to read? In my experience as a memoir writing coach, it takes the courage to bare your soul, tell the truth, and, above all, have a story to share to which strangers can relate because their untold secrets may be similar to yours, or at least as difficult to tell. That is exactly what Patricia Grayhall has done with Making The Rounds.

Writing under a pen name, Patricia gave me an insider’s look at a lifestyle I have always been curious about - lesbianism. With all the political and religious arguments and media sensationalism surrounding gay pride, those of us who aren’t part of that lifestyle get such a distorted view of the realities. We have no idea of the painful struggles those belonging to the LGBTQ community have faced, both historically and currently. Thanks to Patricia’s raw honesty about how early in her life she recognized her attraction to females, her mother’s expectations of her as a pretty female, and her desperate attempts with men to be “straight” that resulted in an abortion, I am vastly enlightened. Even more mind-blowing for me was what Patricia experienced in her career…medicine. Her grueling schedule was one thing, but what she encountered thanks to homophobic attitudes truly angered me.

What was most touching about Patricia’s story was her unrelenting, heartbreaking search for a life partner. It took years of painful relationships and breakups to realize she didn’t know what she was looking for. In her unpretentious, conversational style, she placed her often jumbled emotions on the table for us all to read. But as we memoir readers always hope, Patricia gave us her happy ending. Bravo! Congratulations, Patricia Grayhall, on writing a most successful memoir.

The Stripped-Down Guide to Content Marketing by John Egan is a step-by-step guide to starting, flourishing, and succeeding in the content marketing game. With a wealth of experience as a content marketing specialist and examples of real-life on-the-job experience of what works and what doesn’t, Egan provides an in-depth and insightful look into the reality of content marketing. Covering key topics like SEO, content creation and promotions, the values of pillar content and blogging, and the importance of brand storytelling and authority, this easy-to-read guide makes content marketing a manageable endeavor for anyone interested in entering or improving their content creation and management journey.

The Stripped-Down Guide to Content Marketing by John Egan is an absorbing, concise, and resourceful guide to understanding and implementing a content marketing plan. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, especially the reference to personal anecdotes like finding local angles to stories that resonate with specific communities to drive traffic to a site and never underestimating the amount of traffic that so-called boring companies like lawn and storage businesses can get through well-crafted and implemented content strategies. These two elements stood out most because we often read about the content success of glamorous and desirable brands like fashion and the automotive industries. Still, Egan skilfully demonstrated how he achieved notable content marketing success for companies most would consider unlikely, proving the value of skilled content creation and the difference it can make to any brand. The Stripped-Down Guide to Content Marketing is a valuable resource for content creators, written in a reader-friendly and authoritative tone backed by actionable insights.

Some stories can only be understood if you see the images of the people who lived them. This is the case of the 65th Infantry Regiment, whose story is told in The Borinqueneers by Noemí Figueroa Soulet. Through the hundreds of illustrations of this magnificent bilingual book (written in English and Spanish), readers will discover everything there is to know about the only Hispanic-segregated unit in U.S. Army history starting from 1899, the year of its creation. Then, they will learn about the deeds and lives of the soldiers and officers during the two World Wars and the Korean War, in which the regiment particularly distinguished itself. The photographs are meticulously ordered and have captions to help readers learn about people, places, and events.

The Borinqueneers is a book that arouses the enthusiasm and admiration of those who look at it. Noemí Figueroa Soulet has done an excellent job collecting the photographs and arranging them into thematic sections; this is especially helpful during the long narrative of the Korean War, to which most of the book is devoted. Two chapters struck me the most from a visual point of view: the one dedicated to the Puerto Rican soldiers in the snow and, above all, the one featuring the rare color photographs taken during the Korean War. I hope that The Borinqueneers will be appreciated as much as it deserves. It is a tribute that the families of those who served in the 65th Infantry Regiment will surely love, but military history buffs will also want to add this book to their collection.
