In the Mirrorless Kingdom, where the inside-out matters more than the outside-in, and all are considered special by a wise and caring king, all the creatures are content and happy except the king’s daughter. Princess Journee wanted so badly to know who she was, so she asked her father for a mirror as her coming-of-age present. But alas, the king didn’t have a mirror, as there was no mirror in the whole kingdom. In place of the mirror, Journee receives her father’s permission to embark on a self-discovery quest. She quickly makes friends on her journey and learns that the closest thing to a mirror is a rumored pond of reflection. What is she going to learn on this quest? Find out in The Pond of Reflection by Catherine Ann Russell.

The strength of a story about identity should be its characters, and Catherine Ann Russell does not disappoint in The Pond of Reflection. I loved the exotic characters featured in this remarkable adventure—a daring princess mouse, a faithful mighty horse, a witty owl, and the most sensitive toad in La-La Land. These characters were a humorous and entertaining bunch. I also loved the adventurous storyline, enchanting setting, and colorful choice of words. But, most importantly, I loved the moral of this story. Who we are on the inside is more important than who we are on the outside, and “As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart.”

In this audio version of Catherine Ann Russell’s The Pond of Reflection, the narration by Jeffrey Machado was superb. I was impressed with how well he created each character’s voice, especially the owl’s and the toad’s voices. The audio was clear, smooth, and evenly paced, which added to my enjoyment of the story. The Pond of Reflection is a delightful, entertaining, and impactful read, and I heartily recommend it.

Maestro Orpheus and the World Clock by Robert Pennee and Joanne Grodzinski is a wondrous tale. Ten-year-old Fred is spending the weekend at his grandfather’s old house when he finds himself unable to fall asleep one night. As he hears the clock in the hall announcing midnight, he realizes that it suddenly stopped after the sixth chime. To his amazement, he discovers that time has frozen at the witching hour. Afraid and concerned, he seeks out his grandfather in the shed, where he usually fixes his clocks. Much to his surprise, he does not find his grandfather, but Maestro Orpheus, who teaches Fred the necessity for time and music. He allows Fred to accompany him on his journey to wind up the World Clock. While they’re traveling down the Corridor of Time, Fred, Maestro Orpheus, and the melodic, magical lyre stop to listen to a few stories. However, Fred is unsettled by the desire to keep time at a standstill. Will Maestro Orpheus change his mind before it is too late?

Maestro Orpheus and the World Clock by Robert Pennee and Joanne Grodzinski is an audiobook primarily aimed at young children. Although it is only just over an hour long, the story is captivating and takes the listener on a phantasmagorical voyage. We accompany Fred as he learns about some composers and their childhoods, such as Leoš Janáček, Frédéric Chopin, Richard Strauss, and Joseph Haydn. The sound effects, quality, and ambiance in this audiobook are brilliant. It enables the listener to become truly immersed in Fred’s dream world. The use of Haydn’s Symphony No. 101, which the English Chamber Orchestra performs, acts as the story’s theme song and cements the motifs of music, time, and remembrance. The narrators, R.H. Thomson, Marshall Matson, B.J. McLellan, Leslie Marshall, and Scott Thomas, are also masterful in their delivery. I would listen to this again.

The Tiffin is a work of fiction in the cultural and adventure subgenres. It is intended for middle-grade and young adult readers and was penned by Mahtab Narsimhan, with narration for the audiobook format provided by Michael Mola. In this charming and fascinating story about the dabbawallas of Mumbai, we meet twelve-year-old Kunal in his quest for family. Kunal joins the dabbawallas in their tiffin delivery service, providing lunch for thousands upon thousands of people all across the city. We follow one such delivery on a journey fraught with error and loss in which our protagonist discovers the true meaning of family.

In terms of the story content, I thought this was a thrilling and highly engaging tale for MG and YA readers, and indeed adults who wish to discover something they’ve never learned about Mumbai culture before. Mahtab Narsimhan writes with a loving amount of detail and a cinematic style that easily paints pictures in the reader’s mind, which is a highly immersive and desirable quality for the target audience. There was also a powerful emotional resonance to our protagonist Kunal, who is sweet, relatable, and brave considering the adventure and people he must encounter on his quest in The Tiffin.

In terms of the audiobook production, narrator Michael Mola does a fantastic job of bringing a huge variety of characters to life with his bold voices and varied tones. The editing was crisp, clear, and of great quality throughout, and Mola’s narration in between the dialogue moments was suspenseful, descriptive, and well-paced. I would certainly recommend the audiobook version of The Tiffin as a fantastic way to bring every detailed element and the lively character of this novel to life for readers of all ages.

The Shepherd's Care by Morenike Euba Oyenusi is a wonderful reminder that we are all in the care of God. It starts with Lydia losing her father and, of course, she has a lot of questions. Her mother explains that it was his time to go and she tells her about Jesus and how he looks after us. Jesus asked his disciples to take care of his people like a shepherd would take care of his flock. So too does Jesus look after us. The story continues with Lydia meeting people who are like a shepherd to her and she in turn becomes like that to someone. Showing care for her friend's life. This is a very sweet story and has a lot of heart, I really think kids and adults will love the message.

The Shephed's Care by Morenike Euba Oyenusi is a very heartwarming story with a deep message that will speak to everyone reading it. I loved the illustrations by Subereh M. Monavar which are very colorful. I loved the vivid colors and the depiction of Jesus in a wonderful way. The colors matched the emotions and the backgrounds were perfectly muted for the main characters that needed to stand out. You felt sad for Lydia but you also saw the greater message and I feel this is what the author wanted. I can see parents reading this book to their children, especially if someone they loved has passed away. This book teaches about the love of God and the fact that he looks after us like we are his flock. I feel this story will touch a lot of people deeply. I highly recommend this book.

Turning The Corner is an adventure drama story for preteens by Ruozhen Ma. Inspired by her own experiences of re-joining school after two years of distance learning due to COVID lockdowns since 2020, Ruozhen recalls the period of adjustment she and her friends had to go through to feel like traditional fifth graders. With the advent of fifth grade also came dealing with puberty and the social cliques of school, which is never easy for any young girl. Being a Chinese American also adds to the challenges of trying to fit in. Upon her arrival in fifth grade, Ruozhen wins the student rep elections and performs spectacularly in sports, music, and writing contests. But is she prepared for middle school, where rumors, gossip, and social cliques are going to be on the next level?

The pandemic has created an unprecedented situation where schoolchildren of this generation have been forced to study from home for two years and return to the pressures and challenges of mingling with their peers in school. Ruozhen Ma, an eleven-year-old author, eloquently puts her experiences on paper and tells an engaging story any preteen can relate to. Turning The Corner represents the kids who have lost two years of their school life and now have to start anew. Ruozhen's interactions with her family, friends, and teachers feel genuine and authentic, and you can't help but find them adorable. The narrative is paced well and breezes past without a single hitch. I highly recommend this book to preteens and young adults alike.

Family get-togethers are always a lot of fun, especially when you're a kid, as you meet and play with kids your age when your cousins join in on the fun. The Cousins Are Coming is one such adventure story of a family get-together. Written by Kay Jones, MA, in catchy rhyming verses, with some lively illustrations by Peter Trimarco, the story follows a group of siblings awaiting the arrival of their cousins. Excited and brimming with energy, the kids greet their cousins enthusiastically. But now it's time to cosplay, using rock-paper-scissors to decide who will play which role. Soon, the kids will spy on their parents, play hide-and-seek, look at old family pictures, race across the house, eat ice cream, play board games, and at the end of an exhausting day, argue over who will sleep where.

I still remember the days I waited patiently for family get-togethers when my cousins would come, and we would get into tons of mischief and create an uproar all over the house, much to the chagrin of our parents. This is precisely the energy and vibe I got while reading The Cousins Are Coming. Kay Jones has created a short, sweet story of rhymes for kids to enjoy. The combination of quirky characters and hilariously funny dialogue and rhymes are bound to entertain children of all ages. Peter Trimarco's illustrations are the icing on the cake, making it even more enjoyable. I can't recommend this one enough.

Help your child develop language skills in a fun way through Hayley Rose's Gomer the Gassy Goat. In this amusing children's picture book, we meet Gomer, a happy and friendly goat. He likes trying new things, making new friends, and having lots of fun. However, he has one problem. He is a very gassy goat. Whether in the fields grazing or while practicing goat yoga, Gomer always passes gas. Nevertheless, he always apologizes for his toots and makes funny and silly faces that'll have you laughing out loud.

Most children are fascinated by animals and love it even more when the animals are as cute and funny as Gomer. Even more exciting is that as readers get deeper into the tale, they find more animals that live nearby Gomer in the book's vibrant illustrations. From the colorful birds flying above a meadow to the little yellow chicks playing beside the goat, the animals featured are adorable. Young readers aged five and older will have no difficulty reading this book independently due to the author's simple and clear writing style. Children may even role-play different parts to enhance their enjoyment. The book's captivating imagery and tongue-twister storytelling style will hold their attention. If you are looking for an entertaining read for your child, Gomer the Gassy Goat by Hayley Rose is just the perfect book. I read it to my five-year-old brother, and he kept laughing every time he saw Gomer's funny face.

The Circle of Hugs is a children’s picture book by Heather Cosimo with illustrations by Hiruni Kariyawasam. The book explores the power of giving and receiving a hug. A little girl reflects on the hugs and memories she shared with her family. Whenever she felt scared, anxious, or alone, she always wished for a hug. Even in good times, she wanted to be hugged. Every special moment requires a hug that will make them memorable. The little girl realizes that spreading the power of hugs is vital to showing love and support, and she shares her various experiences when she offers a hug.

The Circle of Hugs is a heartwarming book with a lovely message. Heather Cosimo has taken a simple concept and built a powerful lesson around it. Hugs from loved ones are something that we take for granted, but when they are gone, we realize their significance and value. A hug will always brighten your day, whether sad or happy. Every child deserves a hug because of the feelings these bring. Hugs will make them feel loved and safe, which is good for their mental health. They tell the story perfectly, are bright and colorful, and are ideal for grabbing children’s attention.
