Non-Fiction - True Crime

Evil has lurked among us since the beginning of time, but very few actually witness its gruesome and gutwrenching display of cruelty. In his career as a detective, Robert Davidson (aka Robbo) saw more monstrosity than most of us. In his memoir, The Evil I have Seen, Robert Davidson has described six gruesome true crime cases. This memoir is not for the faint of heart; it is not fiction so the reader does not have the luxury of waving away the disturbing cruelty of culprits, crediting it to the author's imagination. Case after case, the audience stands face to face with the worst and the most innocent of humans, wondering how could someone do that? Although each case was as unsettling as the next one, the one titled Jeff's Friends was beyond heartbreaking.
The Evil I have Seen by Robert Davidson is one of those books that will live with readers and even haunt them for a long time. By his own admission, Robert struggles with the evil that he had seen, even today. Each crime story, though presented with hard facts and pieces of evidence, is heavy with the author's emotions. The audience watches as the author switches gears from presenting facts and logic to reflecting on the victim's suffering, the culprit's soulless act, the lifelong heartache of the victim's friends and family, and the everlasting impact on the detective. The author's words are filled with a contagious passion. When he says, "It's not something we talk about -- people in law enforcement -- our nightmares, our anxieties, our fears of making a wrong decision in a split second," readers feel a palpable sense of dismay. Robert is an authentic writer whose sentiments rise out of the pages and touch the hearts of his readers. I highly recommend The Evil I have Seen by Robert Davidson.

Non-Fiction - True Crime

Before I even read The Injustice System by Ronarose Train, my perceptions of the fairness of the judicial system weren’t positive. Oh, how this biography supported my misgivings and how unfortunate for Sam Gray, falsely accused of major financial crimes, that he believed justice would prevail. He truly believed he and his wife would be exonerated. After all, they were innocent! When the government froze the Grays’ bank accounts and other assets, they were forced to settle for using a public defender. Because Sam believed so ardently in the justice system, and lying via a plea bargain was against his moral code, he refused to accept said plea bargain. That decision, combined with the disinterest of that public defender, landed both Sam and Marilyn in jail. In Sam’s case, incarceration lasted 10 years!
What I learned from Sam’s biographical account was eye-opening: heaven help anyone who is unfairly implicated in a crime! But what impressed me most about Sam’s time in prison was how he turned it into a positive, not just for himself but for other inmates. This is the best takeaway from reading The Injustice System. Before this book, my perceptions of jail were limited to TV shows and movies…for the most part, pretty horrifying. But, just as Sam did, I met some surprisingly good people inside the various prisons where he served time. Sam's stories about those people are heartwarming and through Sam’s conversational, sometimes even humorous accounts, Ronarose Train has made the chilling aspects of incarceration more bearable by focusing on human kindness and offering hope. Treat yourself to a very different and important true story. The Injustice System is a must-read!

Janus Industries, a billion-dollar firm owned by Janus Phillips, experienced a security breach that could take down their entire network. The company brought a struggling Williams Security on board, owned by Jo Williams. It was fiery sparks at first sight for Jo and Janus, who have been through dark times in their lives. Jo focused on keeping her firm afloat while Janus had it all; money, women, and a luxury lifestyle. When Janus Industries experienced another breach in their Hong Kong branch, Jo and Janus traveled there, which led to a blowout. Between their insecurities, press vultures, security breaches, and the potential downfall of a billion-dollar corporation, will the lovebirds find their way to each other? The Refusal by Eve M. Riley has the complete story.
Hurray! The tech world gets its romance series! The Refusal by Eve M. Riley is a slow-burn romance novel that captivated me. It will appeal to both laid-back and hot-blooded, starry-eyed lovers who like to get swept off their feet. The Refusal gave Harlequin and Silhouette collections a run for their money. I love women like Jo, who earn their seats at the table by being excellent at their jobs. Janus was my cup of tea. He was a balanced and well-grounded hunk of a man, seeing where he used to be and his rise to the top. I also fell in love with Fabian. Such loyalty to friendship, even at his expense. I hope to see a Jo and Darcy face-off in subsequent installments. Keep writing, Eve!

Romance - Contemporary

The Missed Kiss by Nicola Lowe is a fresh and flirty contemporary romance novel about a young woman torn between two lovers. Lily is twenty-seven and works as a legal secretary at Draper & Hughes. Lily is perfectly content with her life, but she has been single for four years because of her last relationship that ended horribly. She knows it's time to start dating again. Therefore, her best friend, Cassie, arranged a date with a lawyer named Zack for her. Lily agrees to meet Zack, and fortunately, he will prove to be her chance to fall in love again. However, her other best friend, Luke, who helped her recover from the breakup, just returned home, ready to finally tell her what he feels for her. Thus, Lily will have to decide between Zack and Luke.
I didn't expect a romance novel to be this delightful and intriguing. The Missed Kiss by Nicola Lowe is a fantastic emotionally-charged novel about finding the courage to love and to let someone love you after being hurt. It's a gorgeous and engrossing novel I won't soon forget as it's told with both heartbreaking care and vivid detail. Nicola Lowe is clearly a talented writer who excels at creating love triangles. I fell in love with the characters, and to my surprise, I could not choose which one I would prefer: Zack or Luke. Nicola Lowe's writing is so intelligent and gripping. I know that my next read will be the sequel, To Kiss You Again, as I'm anxious to discover which life Lily has chosen.

Romance - Fantasy/Sci-Fi

The Hunted is a work of fiction in the paranormal romance, suspense, and interpersonal drama subgenres and was penned by author S.B. Alexander. It was written for the adult reading audience owing to the use of explicit language and the presence of sexual content throughout. Part of the Vampire Navy SEAL series of romances, this enemies-to-lovers tale focuses on Layla, a vampire hunter who is well-practiced at her job. But when she lays eyes on the muscular bloodsucker Sam Mason, everything changes. Layla needs his help to save her sisters, but can she keep her conflicted feelings for him under control, or will Sam get everything he wants from her?
Author S.B. Alexander certainly knows how to pitch a romance to keep her readers turning page after page. To begin with, this is a highly intriguing crossover combination where military precision in battle combines with supernatural deadly forces to produce some really exciting action scenes and a solid character basis for Sam. From there, Alexander’s intricate portrayal of the tough and hard-edged Layla, and her journey as she slowly loses her inhibitions around the tempting vampire SEAL, offers readers a chance to really sink into the tension all around her. So when the pair finally come together, the payoff is all the more enjoyable and emotive in all the right ways. The dialogue was also a strong point of The Hunted, serving to give a clear sense of the characters whilst also cutting in with some very slick humor and strong romantic themes. A highly recommended read for PNR fans everywhere.

Romance - Fantasy/Sci-Fi

Love in the Time of Wormholes by Jess K Hardy is a delightful, fast-paced, and warm-hearted rom-com set on an interstellar pleasure craft. Think Star Trek with a super sexy heroine named Sunastara Jeka (Sunny) and the uncharted adventures here are often between the sheets. Sunny takes her job onboard the Ignisar seriously, ensuring the pleasure-seeking guests are catered for, no matter what their desire. She and her crew interact with humor and steamy passion and display the full range of human emotions - even with the artificial intelligence bots onboard. I love how Jess K Hardy weaves a dramatic socio-political backstory as we cheer for Sunny’s happy ending with Freddie, a spunky one-night stand that returns as a crew member. Love in the Time of Wormholes is entertaining with unsuspecting plot twists and many moments of laughter.
Jess K Hardy subtitles the book: A Second Chance Sci-fi Romance and that’s exactly what you get. After five years working onboard the deep space pleasure cruise, Sunny appears wild and crazy on the outside, yet has deep unprocessed emotions on the inside. The author introduces all manners of characters in the right place at the right time to aid Sunny’s personal development, process the loss of her child, and provide Sunny with an opportunity to find love again. The intergalactic connections sit nicely alongside human vulnerabilities that persist no matter where the planet or what the time period. We can all benefit from a little more love. Let’s hope Sunny thinks so too and takes her second chance before it floats off to a distant galaxy. Take a chance on Love in the Time of Wormholes and you’ll enjoy a great sci-fi rom-com with funny and unique characters and an engaging story.

Romance - Fantasy/Sci-Fi

Chasing the Darkness is an action-packed epic fantasy novel written by Cassie Sanchez. After the sudden death of King Valerie at the hands of a Fire Spectral, Watch Guard Commander Drexus Zoldac forms a group of elite Hunters who target Spectrals - people with magical abilities - of all kinds. Amongst his recruits is twelve-year-old Jasce Farone, an orphan who, under Drexus's mentorship, turns into the vengeful and murderous Angel of Death, Azrael. When Drexus infuses Azrael with a dangerous serum to grant him Spectral abilities, Azrael becomes even more powerful and unpredictable, leading to the Hunters betraying him. He finds himself rescued by two Spectral siblings named Kord and Kenz, alongside whom he sets off for revenge against his former employers. However, they must destroy Drexus's serum before he creates more abominations.
Filled with action, intrigue, romance, and betrayal, Chasing the Darkness is a wild fantasy ride that keeps your eyes glued to the page. Author Cassie Sanchez weaves an intricate tale of power, revenge, and redemption that fans of epic fantasy will find thoroughly entertaining. The plot moves at a breakneck speed with twists and turns that keep you firmly engaged in the narrative. The characters have well-developed arcs and diverse personalities. Azrael particularly undergoes a significant amount of change as different plot events put him to the test. He experiences a constant battle between his Angel of Death persona and being Jasce Farone, which is well-portrayed. I also enjoyed his relationship with Kenz. I would recommend Chasing the Darkness to readers who love epic fantasy novels.

In Romancing the Cowboy: An Instalove Age-Gap Romance by Nichole Rose, Cassia Murphy is a renowned romance author who has kept her ever-increasing readership enraptured with her sexy cowboy's looks, personality, and all-round crazy sex appeal. It’s the stuff of her wildest dreams, but that’s where they’ve seemed to stay. Not only does Cassia Murphy have an incredible imagination but she also has a closely guarded secret. Introducing Cord Decker, the bane of her existence and the irritant that she just can’t seem to shake off. It started with an email questioning her character's authenticity. Her unintentionally sassy reply quickly became an infuriating spiral of inquisitiveness that has Cassia running for her life and into the arms of the very man she can’t stand, or at least so she thinks.
Nichole Rose has delivered a jam-packed instalove story with a lovely depiction of the well-known phrase that 'age is but a number.' Cord is a definite heartthrob on the page with his rugged looks and rough-around-the-edges approach that would make any woman swoon. I enjoyed the voluptuousness of Cassia’s character and the reference to her curves as I felt it was very inclusive. The emails exchanged between Cassia and Cord had to be one of my favorite parts of the book, due to both Cassia’s level of brazenness and the unashamed, not-so-bashful comebacks from Cord. The two characters had great chemistry which was carried through to the steamy love scenes between the two. Romancing the Cowboy is a great read and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Lily of the Valley, The Gents, #2 is a beautiful story penned by Sarah M. Eden. Kester Barrington is determined to create a place for himself in the Royal Society. His fiendish dedication to inventing has yet to give him the ‘in’ he has hoped for. Kes’s young life was overwhelmed by the Gents, his loss from family, and the death of his dearest friend Stanley. Deep in his grief, Kes prefers the quiet and tranquility of his estate, Livingsley Hall. Kes only ventures into society when the Gents gather and pressure him into participating. Kes, the Gents, and Julia, wife of Lucas, welcome Violet Ridley and her family into their lives. Little do they know that all of them have been searching for meaning in life and peace. In accepting Violet into their group, their lives will be forever changed. A deep trust develops between Kes and Violet. They work together on a new prosthetic arm for Violet, as her left arm was amputated due to infection. Will they each find the peace they are looking for?
Sarah M. Eden has created a heart-warming historical romance book. Lily of the Valley is a beautifully written story of love, grief, friendship, and dedication. Eden’s character development is to be applauded. The reader will see each character standing in front of them in their mind as they read. Each Gent has a unique nickname given to them, which they absolutely live up to. I found it very difficult to put the book down. The story growth was perfectly laid out and exceptionally planned. The reader can envision themselves standing in the library of Livingsley Hall, searching through the vast volumes of books, as well as becoming involved in the nightly games the Gents and the Ridleys played after dining. I highly recommend Lily of the Valley by Sarah M. Eden. If you are looking for a heart-warming story of strength, love, and dedication, this is it!

Romance - Historical

The Montesoro Legacy is the third novel in the Brandon Brothers series by Stella Riley. Leo, the youngest Brandon brother, is slowly but surely making a name for himself as a portrait painter. While he is quite successful as an artist, his luck in the romance department has not been very good. Leo was considering marriage to a young widow when he was commissioned by Sir Jerome Farrell to paint a portrait of his little sister Charlotte. There, Leo comes across Mariella (Jerome’s step-sister), and sparks fly. Somehow, Mariella has a surprise inheritance, and Jerome wants it. The only problem is that Mariella is not alone anymore. She has Leo and Leo’s family on her side now. With romance blooming between them, Leo is sure Mariella is the one, and he is willing to do whatever it takes to protect Mariella from the clutches of Sir Jerome. Can love truly prevail over all?
What can I say, I am a sucker for a good romance, and this is exactly what I needed to feel better after some tedious days! I liked Leo, but I loved Mariella. Her story is worth reading. Her living conditions are not that great and her opportunities are few. Considering that she has a younger autistic brother to protect and keep herself out of Jerome's clutches, she was handling herself pretty well before Leo came into her life. The chemistry between Leo and Mariella is not intense; it simmers and grows as the story progresses. The readers watch their relationship bloom and then catch flame as their feelings mature. I hated Jerome with a passion and didn’t care about Charlotte, to be honest. The narrative was intense, the characters were interesting, and the overall feel of the plot was entertaining! An easy-to-read romance novel that many will love! Highly recommended.
