When Aidan gets curious enough about his dad, he begins looking for answers. Why his mother feels she cannot tell him about the man Aidan never met is beyond him. She is ready with excuses that it’s too soon and Aidan is too young. Grace isn’t ready to talk about the death of the one great love of her life. She is worn down with her son’s insistence and the undeniable evidence of her husband’s past in the form of court records and letters to and about the late, great Shawn Stevens. As Aidan begins to know his father during one long, emotional afternoon in the attic with his mother, he learns to value forgiveness and, more importantly, the necessity of taking advantage of opportunities at hand.

The Importance of Now by Paul Schumacher is filled with lyrical language and metaphoric magic: “Teenagers hoping to be older, parents wishing they were younger.” “I envisioned her kneeling on the floor, throwing things over her shoulders to find those pink slippers, deep in the bowels of her closet, way back by the skeletons.” Paul Schumacher gifts the reader with lessons on the human psyche and inspires us to be the best version of ourselves. Reading as an adult, I appreciate the hindsight of the story’s theme. I believe reading as a teenager, though, offers valuable content to the young reader. Told in dual periods, Paul Schumacher successfully maintains a tightly woven tale. Heartbreaking and beautifully written, The Importance of Now is a must for any book collection.

Sabal Palms and the Southern Squall by Terry Overton is an uplifting novel about four friends whose bond develops as they help each other through tragic times. Elaine is an aspiring writer who hopes to publish more of her writing even though her friends, Mary and Bonnie, do not believe in her work. As a storm approaches their coastal town which lies along the Texas coast, they all gather in Mary’s home together with their friend, Adriana, the newest member of the group. While they wait for the storm to pass, they recount their best and worst experiences. The category three tropical storm leaves overwhelming destruction in its wake. The friends once again turn to each other for strength and support. Elaine’s writing reaches others whose lives are changed through her faith-inspiring devotionals.

The splendid characterization of the characters in Sabal Palms and the Southern Squall and its heartening themes, which include hope and healing, make the novel an outstanding piece of Christian fiction. I felt as though I knew the four friends as I read through the book. I also loved their humorous conversations, their individual eccentric characters, and their close bond. I also liked how Elaine’s faith touched the lives of so many and instilled hope that healing is possible. Other encouraging themes are also skilfully explored as the friends help each other recover and move forward from the storm’s destruction. Sabal Palms and the Southern Squall by Terry Overton is a heart-warming read about friendship and faith’s life-changing ability. It includes lovely, authentic characters and hope-filled scenes.

Beneath the Cross: Meditations on the Seven Last Words by Bishop Gerardo Colacicco is a fictional yet realistic account of how those who encountered Jesus Christ during his ministry might have reacted while seeing him during his crucifixion. It’s based on the seven last words (actually sentences) spoken by Christ on the cross. The subjects include the woman caught in adultery, the newlyweds from Cana, the blind man at the side of the road, and others. Colacicco speculates about whether these people ever encountered Jesus again, specifically whether they saw him as he was being crucified. Each hears Christ’s seven last words and recalls his or her earlier encounter with him. They want to be there for him just as he was for them.

Gerardo Colacicco is the auxiliary bishop for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. But one does not have to be a Roman Catholic to benefit from this book. Indeed, one does not even need to be religious. Anyone will be moved by the accounts. What I found most inspiring was that the stories told by the subject of the scripture passages were in first-person. Colacicco wrote what he believes the individuals might have thought and said while meeting Jesus the first time and then while seeing him later on the cross. Part of the charm of this book is knowing that it’s from meditations that Colacicco delivered at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City on Good Friday, April 10, 2020. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Colacicco spoke to an almost empty cathedral, although the service was live-streamed, and it’s good to know that Colacicco’s words are receiving further distribution through this book. I recommend Beneath the Cross: Meditations on the Seven Last Words by Bishop Gerardo Colacicco to anyone.

At the heart of Sallie Dawkins’s You Can Share the Love of God With Others is a pressing question that many spiritual books have forgotten to ask: Can every Christian access God's healing power, or is this reserved for an elite few in the Body of Christ? As miracles, signs, and other divine revelations seem to have become an exclusive privilege of what many of us think are the chosen elite, this book objectively addresses the question by discovering the author’s testimony of transformation. She tackles assumptions, doubts, and beliefs by drawing on Bible-based revelations and insights to guide you in unlocking the door to God’s healing power. This is the third and final book in The Awakening Christian Series, the culmination of the trilogy, and it encourages you to fulfill Christ’s Great Commission of spreading the Word.

Simply put, You Can Share the Love of God With Others is an uplifting read for those in need of spiritual recollection. Sallie Dawkins writes in such a reassuring manner that her personal accounts of healing and receiving God’s grace encourage you to shun your laziness in growing with Him. This is a spiritual guide that hooks you into its call to action. Now is always and perhaps the only better time to perform the things that you can do to put yourself in the best position to receive God’s healing power. Whatever perception you have of God, this book reminds us it is important that we do our part to help the situation ourselves and put our trust in Him. Part of the fullness of our spiritual maturity is answering to His call, in the same way that Jesus called for Peter to make it his life's mission to strengthen his brothers and feed God's sheep (John 21:17 NKJV). Read it, feel it, and live it.

The Mystic's Way for Regular People by James Alexander is a slim book that explores communion with God and shows how accessible it is to ordinary people. Many people tend to believe that to become a mystic one needs to be learned, a scholar of sorts, but this book explores the essential components of mysticism and proposes a practical way for regular people to develop deeper levels of intimacy with God. Unlike popular belief, the author moves away from the traditional understanding of mysticism in which the mystics heeded the call of Jesus to seek solitude, hidden in their rooms where they can speak to God in secret. The author, a member of the Third Order Franciscan (TSSF), simplifies prayer and communion with God and provides a deeper understanding of the “how,” “why,” and “what” it consists of.

This book is timely and it addresses the spiritual poverty that is felt worldwide, where many still seek God only in the context of being saved or spared the experience of hell; where many seek God as the solution to their multifaceted problems. James Alexander takes readers back to the core understanding of mysticism as “a face-to-face communion with God—a participation in the very life of God.” He articulates with unusual intelligence and logical arguments on a variety of topics, including the nature of God, poverty of spirit, love and joy, peace, prayer, and meditation. The book is filled with relevant biblical references and allusions to some of the greatest mystics such as Francis of Assisi, Theresa of Avila, John of the Cross, and the learned author Alfred North Whitehead. The prose is beautiful and accessible and the author shares strong personal insights in the book. The Mystic's Way for Regular People is a well-written, inspiring book that should be received as a gift of faith. It is filled with spiritual wisdom and it will guide ordinary readers to find their path to union with God.

The Sword Of Saint Isidores by David Thomas Kay is a sweeping historical fantasy fiction novel and the first book in the author's new Circles of Time series. This installment is a 10th-century gem and quite literally includes the same within the glorious scabbard of the titular sword as the Viking era comes to life. The sword falls into the bloodied hands of the Scandinavian warrior Ragnarr from the outstretched hands of a doomed monk. It is both cursed and coveted, the prized bounty that is no talisman, dancing between the superstitions of Norse mythology and Christian lore. War, slavery, pillage, murder, doctrine, and royalty tightly weave through the pages with the sword leading in directions that push a reader swiftly through historically significant realms and some of the most storied rulers—both real and imagined—of the ancient world. “He still found it hard to believe that both their fathers, living on opposite sides of the ocean, and without any knowledge of each other, could have a close association with this sword, once the property of two legendary kings, Harald and Athelstan.”

There is a lot going on in The Sword Of Saint Isidores and author David Thomas Kay forced me to do what some of the best writers have made me do before: take notes. My first experience of having to do homework was at the foot of Bernard Cornwell's Stonehenge...but stay with me here for a moment longer because, I can assure you, this is a very good thing. Both characters and history are rich and this flourishes in Kay's prose. The narrative is as dense as the forests thinned for longboats that make up the bulk of the book's writing format, and require some scribbles to refresh, but with lines that almost sing, it is worth it: “A crack like the sound of snapping bone signaled the end of the oak’s life, as it finally relinquished its hold on the earth.” Readers who adore Viking sagas will find the fantasy element takes us outside the traditional box of the genre. It is difficult to reinvent a wheel [or oar?] that has rolled for eleven centuries but Kay does a great job setting the foundation for what looks like a promising series. Very highly recommended.

“The two most important warriors are patience and time.” JP Robinson’s Christian historical fiction novel, In the Dead of the Night (Northshire Heritage), is one intriguing drama. The Great War (WW1) continues its devastating path of destruction. Thomas Steele, branded a traitor, risks his life to return to England to save his Northshire estate from being seized by the government. His German daughter-in-law, Leila, is forced to resume spying when Elsbeth Schneider, the German espionage network leader, abducts her child. Elsbeth knows Leila’s strengths and capabilities, thus playing on her emotions and loyalties to the German cause. Malcolm is overwhelmed by the recurring backlash he faces from his father’s treason and his wife’s occupation. But he will do whatever it takes to rescue his son and save his legacy.

Spies, lies, love, and loyalty are often misleading in JP Robinson’s outstanding novel, In the Dead of the Night (Northshire Heritage). These characters are definitely skilled in manipulation and survival skills, even the untrained ones. A few of the events that occurred are based on actual historical references that JP Robinson included in his informative notes. Some of the characters were created after he was inspired by historical figures he read about, including the barbarous Elsbeth Schneider and spymaster Robert Hughes. David Lloyd George served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1916-1922. There’s often a lot of information and news-worthy documentation on WW2, so it was nice to learn more about The Great War and how it affected the world. In the Dead of the Night (Northshire Heritage) is a novel that historians and readers, in general, will find a fantastic read.

Beyond the Scale: Emotional Healing from Food Addiction by Debra Moss is a non-fiction self-help Christian guide for those who struggle with unhealthy relationships with food. Moss uses her own life experiences in the narrative as she addresses the progression of her food addiction, which can be traced back as far as the age of six when her grandmother warned that if Moss' weight wasn't curbed as a child that she would grapple with the effects for the rest of her life. Moss breaks the book down into four distinct and interconnected sections: Mind, Soul, Body, and Putting It All Together. These are then further distinguished by addressing the crux of the psychological, spiritual, and physical nature of food addiction and establishing scripture-based guidance to pierce the veil of its toll.

It takes a great deal of courage and an even greater amount of faith for an individual to go public with their story of addiction. It is frequently met with surprised concern by people beyond the addict's immediate circle and is almost always followed by a frown, a few polite nods of the head, and the realization by the addict that the person they have just confided in now views them as someone with a problem that is their own fault, and that stems from a deep moral weakness. Of course, addiction is so much more complex than that. In her book Beyond the Scale, Moss' application of scripture to every element of the journey means readers are able to navigate a way out of the darkness of addiction into the light of progressive healing in all aspects. I was most moved by Learning To Love Yourself in which Moss writes, “You were never meant to live a life of deprivation, especially when it comes to love.” Later, Moss expands this to include not only self-love but the love God has for the individual and the love the individual has for God. This is the only way to truly seek progress over perfection. The book is well-intended, well-written, and profoundly instructive, and I have no doubt others who read it will be able to view circumstances with open eyes and open hearts.

Encountering the Great I Am: With His Name Comes Everything by Judy Jacobson explores God's divine plan through an exploration of His divine name and focuses on this as a primary question. The question is addressed through the evolution that occurred between His command for His name to be remembered by each generation and how we came to know the names of the Lord, God, and Father. Jacobson focuses on this mystery and incorporates various sacred objects such as sacred fire, the tabernacle, the Spirit of the Prophecy, and the Ark of the Covenant. This book goes into what these objects have in common while delving into the ways in which God communicates with His people.

This book is written from a personal place with Judy Jacobson weaving her own experiences throughout. Encountering the Great I Am is an ideal resource that teaches while also providing a connection to Jacobson through her honesty. At the forefront of the book is an exploration of God's name which serves as a biblical study. Underneath are elements of healing, sharing, and compassion for those seeking answers, are curious about God's name, and need a deeper connection in their life. The tone of the book comes from a devoted place that is thoughtful and curious with Jacobson exploring sacred objects in a way that will have you seeing them differently or with a deeper meaning than you had before. Jacobson's writing style makes her book relatable and makes it easy to form a deeper spiritual connection. You will also find ways to communicate with God. Thought-provoking and earnest, this book provides a great companion for a Bible study as well as personal research. Encountering the Great I Am is an honest, poignant, emotional, and uplifting book that explores ways of communicating with God, a study of His name, and Jacobson's personal experience.

Get to the Point: Every Guidance or Provision You Will Ever Need Can Be Found Today in God's Presence by Kevin White is a book that should have never been written as, ideally, people should not need it. What then is the reason for its publication? Many Christians are missing what it truly means to be a Christian, despite doing everything that is Christ-like. It appears that many are pursuing good works in the name of Christ without understanding the process. The author emphasizes that God’s whole purpose has been His presence in your life. Does this sound as if it’s nothing new? If you keep using words like hope, faith, and confidence that are not backed up by practical action, it’s like wearing a parachute and expecting it to save your life without you jumping out of the plane.

True to its title, this is a book that will not waste your time. Kevin White demonstrates that your true path to an authentic connection with God cannot be found in rituals and religion alone. What White aims to achieve in Get to the Point is to help you grasp the rich essence of your relationship with God. In a world where Christian knowledge is limited to Bible stories, misquoted verses, and the anything-goes interpretation of Scripture, White keeps it straightforward and stresses that God’s whole purpose has been you in His presence and His presence in you. If you want to discover your reason for being, this inspirational Christian guidebook can point you in the right direction.
