Fiction - Thriller - Political

A team of highly trained intelligence analysts are sent to Iraq on a mission. Whilst there, their convoy is ambushed and some of the team members are killed. The seriously injured survivors are treated in a hospital. Once released, Eugene "Boston" Hollinger starts to have strange dreams and consults a dream therapist, Dr Tara Winters, to help him understand his mysterious dreams. With more understanding of his almost prophetic dreams, he rounds up a team and sets off in search of a high ranking government mole. Corruption, betrayal, secrets, lies and a cat and mouse hunt all make for an exciting read. How will Boston's dreams help him to uncover this mole? They seem to be his only clues on this deadly hunt.
A twisting and gracefully woven plot unravels on the pages as Boston tries to determine the identity of the mole to save himself and others. It certainly keeps you guessing as you attempt to determine who this mole could be. Can you solve it before Boston does? Meanwhile, Dr Winters is trying to find out exactly what happened to Boston in the hospital, and if he really does have PTSD. The Eyes of Others by Mikael Carlson is a real page turner, filled with action, mystery, and intriguing, surprising twists and turns.
If you enjoy suspenseful genres with a twist, you should most certainly read The Eyes of Others by Mikael Carlson. The characters are well developed and the pace is steady and relentless. Mikael Carlson has a great writing style, and the book is well written and easy to read. The plot is intriguing and captivating, holding your attention throughout. Mikael has created realistic, unique and gritty characters which become like family, some of which you love, others which you dislike, but nonetheless you are embroiled in their exploits. There is very little gratuitous violence, which is refreshing in a novel of this genre. The ending was surprising and unexpected as well as thought provoking, and stayed with me long after I had read the final pages of The Eyes of Others. An excellent read!

Fiction - Thriller - Psychological

When local authorities are apathetic regarding a kidnapping and the recent discoveries of children's bodies, three retirees start an investigation of their own in the intriguing suspense novel, The Criminal Mind: A Psychological Thriller (The Good Lawyer Series: Book 3) by Thomas Benigno. When his sister Peggy vanished on her way to a dance, Charlie Malone left home and joined the Marines. More than fifty years later, Charlie meets eighteen-year-old Mia, who has ties to his hometown. Sadly, as a result of childhood trauma, Mia has multiple personalities. When the bodies of small boys uncovered at a construction site coincide with Mia's traumatic memories, Charlie believes there is a connection between the boys, Mia, and Peggy. Convincing retired lawyer Nick Mannino and Former Secret Service agent Paul Tarantino to investigate, the three men travel to the crime scenes. Shocked by local law enforcement's dispassionate attitude regarding the recent grisly discoveries and the current kidnapping of a local boy, they become suspicious. Is it possible the police are involved in a cover-up? If so, how long has it been going on?
Superbly written, The Criminal Mind by Thomas Benigno is a sensational novel in the Nick Mannino series. Filled with mystery and suspense, it is a riveting story with an intricate plot, complex storyline, and intriguing characters. Spellbinding twists coil throughout, coming to a horrifying and heart-stopping conclusion. Distinctive characters who have acute moral, physical, emotional, and mental issues add context to the storyline. Their contrasting personalities, challenges, and attitudes give the plot definition and balance. Although this is the third book in the series, the book does well as a standalone. Nick's previous exploits that are relevant to the plot ease into the storyline without interrupting the flow of the story. Engaging and intense, it is a gripping novel with a compelling and suspenseful plot that promises to thrill fans of mystery, thrillers, and suspense.

The Roach
A Dark Vigilante Thriller
Rhett C. Bruno

Fiction - Thriller - Psychological

The Roach by Rhett C. Bruno is proof that there is always room for a great story that features a comic-book type character. Make way for Reese Roberts, a vigilante that strikes fear in the hearts of criminals operating in Iron City. Known by his vigilante persona as The Roach, Roberts is an antihero who does not operate under a strict moral code. He will not hesitate to inflict extreme force, even kill if necessary. But keeping Iron City clean from criminal elements is a high-risk undertaking, and it got to him when a bullet in his spine left him in a wheelchair after saving Laura Garrity, the mayor’s daughter. As a paraplegic, he lost all sense of rhyme and reason, evidenced by the story’s tragic opening. A new Roach vigilante appears in Iron City after his armored suit is stolen from his lair. At the same time, a rogue killer arrives in the city, leaving brutal personal messages used to taunt the Roach. Roberts will have to postpone his suicide plans because he is the only one who can fix the whole mess—and he will have to do it this time not in an armored suit but in a wheelchair.
Being a big fan of the superhero genre, I seriously enjoyed what this story is all about. But The Roach shouldn’t be taken as one of those fantastical superhero stories. It is more about a city and how it can potentially break a man’s soul, and out of that brokenness, a man selects a choice that feeds his feelings of helplessness. As a writer, Rhett C. Bruno has an intelligent understanding of his theme, much like Alan Moore and Frank Miller. He has written a novel where the setting and character are inseparably linked to each other in that Roberts takes care of the city and pays the price for it. It appears that Bruno finds the misery of Roberts more painful than the scourge he has inflicted on criminals. This is fascinating because it helps explain how far a man could take his conflict against himself and against others—and you know that the Roach has to hit back somehow. The Roach is a brilliant antihero novel. I highly recommend this to anyone who is into cutting-edge and intelligent action hero stories.

Fiction - Thriller - Terrorist

In The Commander by Dan E. Hendrickson, Lieutenant Commander Jacob Edwards has just taken command of the Hamilton Class Cutter, First Responder as the captain of the US Coast Guard when news of a possible terrorist attack in the Gulf of Mexico reaches the White House. Captain Tommy Williams sends Jacob to investigate and deal with the situation. As the true extent and severity of the situation unfold, Jacob realizes there is a link to the possibility of a terrorist attack on a US oil rig, and a missing ship carrying children. Behind the sabotage are the Saudi Royal Family, the Russian underworld, and a notorious pirate assassin. As the First Responder races to the oil rig, time is quickly running out. Jacob must use every skill he has learned to resolve the impending catastrophe while obeying an order from the President to keep his movements confidential.
Since reading other books in The Last Enemy series, I was looking forward to more exciting exploits from Jacob Edwards and The Commander by Dan E. Hendrickson definitely lived up to all my expectations. There are new and intriguing characters, as well as many old favorites. Natasha is a real psychopath. I never thought there could be a character more despicable than Dominik, but she was evil to the core. Jacob's relationship with his daughter was endearing as they shared so many tender moments together; this was contrasted perfectly with his relationship with his enemies. I love Jacob as a protagonist. Although his character is flawed, it makes him even more relatable and his morals and character are impeccable. The action begins immediately and takes you on a roller coaster of excitement with so many interesting and strong sub-plots. I thought I could second guess how the plot would unfold by now, but the author always takes me down a path I was not expecting. His brilliance at creating tension and conflicts in the story are enviable and so satisfying as a reader. I read the final third of this novel with my heart pounding, as all the loose ends were tied up with immaculate literary genius. I cannot rate this author highly enough and would recommend his novels to everyone.

Fiction - Time Travel

“The devastation of my mom’s death split my universe into two time periods: before she died and after.” In The Reckoning (A Time Travel Thriller) by D.M. Taylor, physicist Taden Barrett and her team successfully find a way to time travel. Leaders of the Patriot Party waste no time and order them to use time travel for the military to eliminate a terrorist group that calls themselves The Reckoning, reclaim several states that have been taken over, and save the United States. Taden, however, has a personal mission of her own: to reconcile with the night her mom died two decades ago. An unexpected betrayal threatens to hasten the downfall of her country and deconstruct her family's past. Despite having time travel as a powerful instrument, the obstacles prove trickier than she anticipated, and she must correct everything before it's too late.
Time travel gives this thriller a solid premise constructed through an engaging plot. It’s fascinating how some events, which seem irrelevant at first, connect and become significant when time travel is involved. Taden, as brilliant as she is, struggles with her inner conflict due to her personal relationship and her fixation on mending her past involving her late mother. When disaster strikes, it is easy to empathize and root for her to fight back and regain her confidence. Her sister, Ruth, already proves to be a survivor of hardship. Following her journey to avoid the Reckoners and get to Taden is nerve-racking and impressive. With an engaging narrative, the characters' goals - self-imposed or otherwise - give momentum to the plot's pace. D.M. Taylor's The Reckoning is eerie in regards to the safety of a country and the powerful impact of time travel with a solid warning: some things can never be changed for a reason. A thought-provoking and entertaining read.

The Whirlpools of Time

Fiction - Time Travel

What happens when two people from two different timelines meet and fall in love? The Whirlpools of Time by Anna Belfrage offers a surprising answer to this question and transports readers on a romantic ride to strong moments in history. Duncan Melville’s life in 1715 is successful but lonely. When he finds himself unwittingly transported to 2016, he is stunned as he struggles to make sense of this new world. But everything changes when he meets Erin Barnes and risks his life to save hers. The attraction between them is mutual, even if Erin has no plans of getting into anything deeper than friendship with the strangely dressed man. When they are thrust back to 1715, they find themselves enmeshed in an adventure to find Duncan’s uncle, crossing an unforgiving Scottish landscape in a world on the brink of war. Can they locate Duncan’s uncle and can Erin find the portal back to the future?
Anna Belfrage’s story is captivating and is one of the most original stories I have read that combines elements of time travel, romance, adventure, and history to build an exciting world for readers to navigate. She writes in beautiful, mostly descriptive prose that captures strong moments in the plot, the emotions of the characters, and the elements of the setting with forensic accuracy. The contrast between the worlds of Erin and Duncan is intelligently written; one is a historical setting and the other features a modern world ruled by technology and the media. The story is accomplished and affecting, tightly plotted, and the writing flows gracefully. The Whirlpools of Time is character-driven and the author’s careful and detailed execution of the setting adds a deeper layer of richness to an already superbly entertaining romance. It features strong plot points and a robust conflict; it is an utterly satisfying read with an unexpected denouement.

Fiction - Visionary

The Triskelion by Victoria Lehrer is a dystopian tale where two people desperately in love are trying to find each other, but the world has other plans for them. Dora d’Arc is the daughter of a Landlord of the Earth and she is in love with a prisoner. While Dora and Caellum are in love, they cannot find a way to be together as long as he is in jail for challenging the people who rule them all. In order to be near him, Dora moves to Transtopia but only to find herself figuratively under the oppression of the Imperial Governor. With no way out of their predicament, Dora decides to marry the son of the Imperial Governor in exchange for Caellum’s life. However, she has no idea that he has already broken out of his prison and is masterminding a plan that will not only free the people but enable both of them to be together forever. What is going to happen now? Can Caellum and Dora find a way to be together?
Although I did not read the first novel in the series, I had no issue with becoming invested and interested in the characters. The story itself is very captivating; the highs and lows of the plot had me riveted and wanting more. Dora and Caellum were going through some tough times in this novel, but their growth and development were amazing. Dora was not helpless or desperate; Caellum was fearless and ready to fight. They made a very strong couple that makes you want to cheer them on. I loved the story, the characters, and even the villains. There was nothing I would wish for the author to change in the story. It is perfect the way it is! A very interesting and entertaining novel.

Beyond the Rio Gila

Fiction - Western

Beyond the Rio Gila by Scott G. Hibbard is a historical and coming-of-age story that features multidimensional and exquisitely developed characters. The main protagonist is seventeen-year-old Moses Cole who leaves home and walks from the Shenandoah farmland to Pennsylvania and eventually becomes a First Dragoons underage recruit. The adventure follows Private Moses Cole on a journey from Virginia to San Diego and back, a tale of loss, friendship, humanity, and love—it is enriched by the humor, the encounters with different characters, and shared humanity among characters of diverse cultures and backgrounds.
The story evokes strong elements of history, especially the Mormon Battalion from Council Bluffs to San Diego in 1846 to 1847 during the Mexican-American War. Against an unforgiving, historical backdrop, the author brings to life a story that features immigrants, the effects of religious persecution on a pregnant woman, a drunk intellectual, and many others. The narrative is a story of adventure, love, and the resilience of the human spirit, told in a captivating voice and exploring the beauty of human intercourse, the balm of humor, and the hidden joys of perseverance. The writing is crisp and it reflects the cultural background of the characters, with dialogues that capture both the intelligence and the way the characters think and speak. The witticism and insights infused into the conversations had me delighted as I read from one gripping page to the next. Beyond the Rio Gila is not just a historical novel; it is classic, a well-crafted story with sophisticated characters, a smartly written plot, and humor that sinks its teeth to the very core of the reader. You will love Scott G. Hibbard’s characters, his attention to detail when it comes to the setting, and his exceptional ability to write scenes that feel real to readers.
