"The Other Alexander: Book One of The Bow of Heaven" was written by Andrew Levkoff. This is a historical novel with a touch of romance, mystery, suspense and intrigue. The setting is 20BCE, Siphnos, Greece. Alexander was taken captive and given to Crassus. Alexander faces the many humiliations that come with the role of a slave. The former Greek philosophy student was intelligent and compassionate; he came to terms with his plight and came to care for his master. The master’s house was filled with intrigue and murder. Alexander had a difficult decision to make and either way he could be the one to pay the price. Levkoff draws on an actual person in his account. I was curious about the “real” Crassus and did a little research. Marcus Lionius Crassus was a Roman General and a politician. He was famous for his role in the Battle of the Colline Gate. Crassus crushed the slave rebellion that was led by Spartacus. He also financed Julius Caesar. The author has created a multilayered character in Crassus. This tale is told from Alexander’s point of view giving the reader a unique opportunity to see the real nature of the great emperor.

Levkoff is an expert at character development. I found the bits of Greek life fascinating. The author utilizes philosophy and history throughout this tale. The cast of characters could have gotten out of control but the author wisely stuck with a small group. Levkoff is a very talented author. He has plans for 'The Bow of Heaven' to be a trilogy. If the next two books are as well done as Book 1, Levkoff’s name will soon be rolling off the lips of the fans of historical fiction.

I was just not into poetry, that was until I read "In the Company of Women". The further I got into the book, the more poems I identified with. The book touches our relationship with mothers, daughters, sisters and friends. Some pay tribute while some rant about the behavior. But all can touch a nerve.

When I read the poem, 'In the Kitchen with Dovey', I remembered watching my mom cook, then helping her with small tasks and later graduating to cooking. Good memories! 'My Unsung Heroine' was a very moving tribute to a mother in terrible circumstances. I cried as I read it. 'Vermillion' was a piece of art like a shiny jewel. 'A gift for Tabitha' was a beautiful poem that touched my heart in a special way. It spoke of love for a child. 'Warmth on a Cold Day' speaks of love a grandmother has for the grandchildren. It makes me remember my grandma baking loaves of bread and letting us tear the first loaf apart and eat it steaming hot with butter. These were the good days before her mind became cloudy. 'Birthday Lunch Autopsy' is a humorous poem of a friendship gone bad because the friend is showing antisocial personality problems. I laughed that it was not me experiencing this lunch; sounds as if an antacid would be in order. I loved reading these poems as they reinforced the kinship with friends, mothers, grandmothers, sisters and cousins and made me appreciate them all.

"The Duke Don't Dance" by Richard Sharp is a fascinating journey following the lives of a group of friends and acquaintances we first meet at Annapolis in 2011. They are attending the wake of one of their own, who has recently passed away. From there we return to High School in 1960, to begin learning about the people with whom we will be very well acquainted by the time the story concludes. This 50+ year journey ends as we accompany one of the friends back home after the burial at Arlington, the day after the wake. It is a poignant reflection on real life, which will resonate with everyone who lived - and lives - during the years of the so-called "silent generation". Mr. Sharp paints a vivid, pointillist mural of that era.

"The Duke Don't Dance" is a story of real life. Every reader will associate with one or more of the characters, and will recall friends long past in the lives of the other characters. You will love, and you will hate in turn. The story is reminiscent of happier times, and times of grief. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry. It will make you wonder how friends from your youth are doing, and might even prompt you to look up a few of them. Perhaps it will give you strength to resolve some long-standing issues in your own life. Above all, you will feel the richer for having read it.

"The Complete Mystery of Matthew Alcott" is so much more than your usual mystery! This novel is a loaded cannon you won’t want to miss!
Matt Alcott is a journalist who works in the records department on archives for the Mormon Church when he discovers some very dark and shocking secrets from the early days of the church as he follows the history of Joseph Smith. Some of these secrets will shock you where he uncovers sexual promiscuity with the prophet among other evils. He will also go on to reveal the secret societies that are alive and well today within the church. He decides to write a expose with all that he has found. The information will rock the Mormon world. While finishing his novel he finds romance within a most forgiving town. He continues to battle old demons and ones he knows personally from his past. The head honchos at the church find out about the novel and will stop at nothing to keep this book off the shelves. In an attempt to do so, they serve up an offer Matt surely can’t refuse.(Shades of a Godfather here?) When he discovers who is behind this scheme he backs off and this is when it gets down and dirty!

J M Oborn is well-versed in the history of the Mormon Church. I was so engaged in this book that I could not, and did not, put it down. It was so interesting to learn about this intriguing religion. I love the way Oborn’s character is portrayed as a strong man who is able to handle an enduring romance in the midst of all the turmoil he faces. I believe this novel is on its way to becoming a best seller!

Camnin was forced to do battle against his will by the Trisaders. After many years he saw the opportunity to flee and did. Twenty-one year old Camnin struggled to survive the desert. As the sun beat down on him he held tight to the amulet and longed for home. His last thoughts before unconsciousness overtook him was of his mom and dad and the time they gave him the amulet; it was a rich, almost orange, color. They told him it was bronzium and found in the Argalast Mountains. He was a mere seven years old at the time. When he regained consciousness a beautiful young woman was with him and he assumed she was a goddess. Cephiri touched him and healing power flowed from her. When he was stronger she took him to Eledock, one of the Judges. The wise man learned the secret of the amulet and Camnin’s unusual gift for knowing the memories of others through his dreams. However, he does not share any of it with Camnin, recognizing that Camnin must discover the truths for himself. The general of the Trisaders destroyed all in their path, determined to find the keeper of the amulet, fearing the prophecy will come true.

Brian del Rio offers readers an exciting adventure in his book "Secrets of the Amulet". He managed to successfully combine action, adventure, romance, fantasy, and sci fi in the same plot so that this book will appeal to a broad group of readers. The romance between Camnin and Cephiri was touching. I loved watching it develop. Del Rio managed to capture pure evil in some of his characters. It was a pleasure to dislike them and to see their demise. This is the first book in a new series. I look forward to reading the next installment.

As a child, and growing up, Katherine Mayfield suffered in a way that children should never suffer, yet it happens repeatedly to so many. My heart ached for Katherine as I read the different accounts throughout the book about how her mom treated her, not physical abuse, but truly mental abuse. This was a family of three living in a very lonely household, where not even an I Love You or a hug was ever given. With vivid details about her journey to emotional healing, Ms. Mayfield gives her readers help in situations similar to hers. In her book, Katherine gives many references that will make it easier for readers to get the help they need. I highly admire Katherine Mayfield for her courage in writing her story, and wanting to help others.

“The Box of Daughter” is not what I call an easy read. Sometimes it is very difficult to read the details of what the author had to endure growing up with her parents. She doesn’t leave out details, but pretty much tells it as it is, being vividly honest about her feelings and how she was treated. However I was pleased when she talked about her aunt Mae and uncle John, because that was one place Katherine seem to find love and peace. “The Box of Daughter” would be a wonderful book for anyone who suffered any kind of abusive or difficult childhood. The author's journey to healing can be used in a lot of different situations, and the most important thing is reading from someone who knows what they are talking about, and Katherine Mayfield’s story is truly one that can be trusted and respected.

Sonny Bright Feelright, the son of hippies (hence the given name) embarks upon a new chapter in his life as a Forensic Accountant. Who would have known that such a dull sounding title could be such a dangerous and harrowing job? Sonny has opened shop with Simon and Charlotte, two co-workers from a now defunct investment company whose devious owner carries a grudge. Between her, the mafia and, well, basically the past, Sonny has every reason to be concerned about his life. When a bomb detonates in the alley as he approaches, a chain of events begin leaving the man with the funny name racing to find which nemesis aims to kill.

"The Premature Demise of Sonny B. Feelright: A New and Dangerous Career" is part of a series written by Dwight David Morgan. I did not realize I was reading the continuation until doing a little research on the author. Mr. Morgan has the skill to write in such a way that the reader becomes completely engrossed in his story and even in the middle of a series can start off not feeling as though something was missed. This is not something that all authors are capable of! Furthermore, the author's writing not only draws the reader into the story, it is descriptive and real. It was easy to picture the scenes as they unfolded. It was even easier to sink in with the plot, looking forward to the next page and the next page after that! I will be finding a copy of the first book in the series, "The Unlikely Career of Sonny B. Feelright" in the near future!

Reeshana is a Miracle Mixer, someone from another dimension who throws miracles. She is known to be one of the best, but something happens while throwing her latest miracle. She falls into the mix, and becomes someone else. Merri Dwyer has been plagued by odd dreams all her life, and lately she has been dreaming about the same people and can actually feel their experiences. When she takes a business trip to Phoenix to scout out a new location for a bookstore things get weird as someone starts following her, so she cuts her trip short and heads home to Denver, but the problem follows her. It seems as if someone wants her dead, and will go to any lengths to make it happen. Who would want Merri dead, and how does Reeshana fit into the puzzle?

An intricately woven plot with plenty of twists and turns makes this book a real page turner. Ms. Nash has the ability to bring not only her characters to life, but with her attention to detail she easily brings the story itself to life. Her attention to detail and the way she describes the action packed scenes really made me feel as if I was watching a motion picture. She really kept me guessing as to who the bad guys actually were. Often when a story involves the past as well as the present, it becomes hard to follow, but not so with "The Miracle Mixer." I found myself becoming quite interested in the past, but was also anxious to know what was taking place with Merri. I really felt as if Merri was a great lead character. She had such a wry sense of humor, was brave and really cared about her friends. While the author provides a satisfying ending, she also left me anxious for another book with these characters. Overall, if you enjoy a contemporary fiction that also gives glimpses of the past, which weaves together mystery, intrigue, a splash of romance, as well as drama and then throws in a sci-fi twist that takes on the age old war of good versus evil, then "The Miracle Mixer" is a must read.

"The Book of James" begins with Nick dead, killed in a car wreck while Mackenzie was driving. It was not her fault, but that did not stop the guilt she felt. As Nick lay dying, his last request to her was to "find James". The suspenseful book starts with the search for James and she has no idea who she is looking for and why. Mackenzie is led to an old house full of tunnels under the house, locked doors, and a woman, the mother of Nick, who is cold eyed and would have made me turn and run, but Mackenzie is driven to find answers. She has help from Dylan, the handsome young lawyer and her friend Samantha. Dylan calls her Nancy Drew because of her digging for clues and for what has happened in years past that must be kept secret by Cora, Nick's mother. So many questions to ask, so many clues to dig up. Mackenzie finds herself in hot water because of the information she "digs" up.

What a book! I found this book to be very scary because of its realism. "The Book of James" is full of events that can seem logical when mind control and degradation of people are at play. This is a read-all-night book, and has a bit of romance but the ongoing premise is the question; will our heroine come out alive? She is driven by her husband's dying request to "find James."

Nineteen year old Cid Milan leaves Cuba with his family in 1980. His father, the Colonel, had fought with Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, but when he turned against their Marxist leanings, he was put in jail for three years. Twenty-five years pass and Cid is a U.S. citizen and college educated, a successful architect, and has just been named "South Florida's Hispanic Man of the Year. "He has not spoken to his father in years, but he is called to Tampa as the Colonel, dying of lung cancer, has a confession to make to Cid. What is on the Colonel's mind? Years before, as the Milans were leaving Cuba, the Colonel knew that Cid's girlfriend, Sandra, was pregnant with their child, but would not let her join them in their escape from Cuba. Can Cid get back into Cuba to find Sandra and their son, now a grown man?

"However Long the Night" is a well-written and well-edited story of lovers separated for years by their families. The characters of Cid, Sandra, their son Diego, Cid's brother Manny, and all the other characters both major and minor are well-developed and highly believable. The plot proceeds believably as Cid goes to great lengths to find Sandra and their son. His trip to Mexico to get into Cuba and the people he must find and then interview to reach his long-lost love are quite real and will draw the reader into the story. The build up of suspense as "However Long the Night" comes to its conclusion will keep the reader absorbed until the story's concluding pages. "However Long the Night" is a sure keeper!
