Non-Fiction - Health - Medical

In the introduction to H.O.P.E. for the Alzheimer’s Journey: Help, Organization, Preparation, and Education for the Road Ahead, Carol B. Amos states: “My brothers and I were devastated when our mother began displaying signs of Alzheimer's disease, also referred to as Alzheimer's. We became part of the estimated ten million unpaid family members caring for a person with Alzheimer's in the United States.” Thus began her journey in search of understanding what comes with the condition, a journey which took her to support groups, workshops, to eventually becoming a CARES Dementia Specialist. This book documents what the author has learned along the way, offering readers and caregivers to patients of Alzheimer’s the knowledge, wisdom, and the tools they need to make the journey less painful and more meaningful.
Carol isn’t just a wise and wonderful person, but also a great communicator, a woman who has learned tons from experience and has amassed a wealth of knowledge. She possesses the gift of communicating that knowledge in language that is accessible and in a voice that is both empathic and compassionate. In this book, readers will find a heart-to-heart conversation with readers looking for help in dealing with patients with Alzheimer’s. The use of the epistolary style in this book also makes its message intimate and more compelling. H.O.P.E. for the Alzheimer’s Journey is a great tool, a handbook that everyone with a parent or a family member having memory problems should read. It’s packed with information, insights, and actionable steps to transform the caregiving experience into one that enriches both the lives of the caregiver and the patient.

Non-Fiction - Health - Medical

Stories from the Tenth-Floor Clinic: A Nurse Practitioner Remembers is a work of non-fiction and medical memoir penned by author Marianna Crane. Set during the 1980s, this highly emotive and truly fascinating memoir takes us into the world of senior care in a poorer area of Chicago. Our central character is a nurse practitioner working in a clinic inside a senior housing building, and the narrative takes us through the trials and tribulations of her job, not only in caring for the various patients themselves but protecting them from scam artists, unruly visitors, and even their family members. What results is a fascinating slice of life with a deeply personal and generous narrative, one that teaches us much about the faults in our elderly care system, and also about the pure kind-heartedness that the human spirit is capable of.
Author Marianna Crane does not set out with any particular agenda or mission, but rather the narrative unfolds by itself and leaves us to make our own conclusions about the nature of the wealth gap in the U.S.A. and the consequences that it has on elderly care. What is evident throughout the reading experience is an accomplished narrative that tells its story concisely, but also leaves room for an honest emotional reaction from its author. This is an admirable expression of truth which engenders a huge amount of respect for Crane, and the very difficult job that she and many others across the country have to take on every day. One of the most impressive feats in the writing is the way in which Crane brings to life the many people whom she sees come and go from the clinic, and each one is treated to a fully descriptive character moment that we may also fall in love with as the reading audience. Overall, I would highly recommend Stories from the Tenth-Floor Clinic to anyone seeking a heartfelt new memoir read.

Rescued from the Ashes

Non-Fiction - Historical

Rescued from the Ashes: The Diary of Leokadia Schmidt, Survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto by Leokadia Schmidt is a memoir that captures the horrific experience of the Holocaust and what it was like to be a Jew during WWII. In this memoir, a young Jewish housewife and her husband escape from the Warsaw ghetto, together with their five-month-old baby to find shelter in the least expected of places. The narrative begins on the day that residents of the ghetto were supposed to be deported, but little did they know that they were destined for the concentration camps. It is heartbreaking for the Schmidts to watch as the number of people in the community diminishes, with more being deported to concentration camps every passing day.
The sense of anxiety is well captured in the narrative and the fear that grips the Jews living in the ghetto. It's a kind of fear that became part of the everyday experience of the people. The author writes in a way that makes the story cinematic, allowing readers to share the experience of half a million people in the Warsaw ghetto. Right from the introduction, she offers a powerful insight into the conflict: "In 1943, after being driven from one place to another on the “Aryan” side of Warsaw, we finally found shelter in a tinsmith’s shop located on 27 Belwederska Street. It belonged to Antoni Michalski, the father of our protector." The day to day experiences of the Jews are captured with forensic detail, the pathos coming out powerfully, and man's inhumanity to man is not a subject of fiction but a reality written into the life of the protagonist. While this story captures the journey of one family as they escape the terrors of racism, it is also a story of hope and resilience, following the characters through the years as they eventually emigrated to the US. Rescued from the Ashes offers a fresh perspective on the horrors of a history that has haunted and shall haunt humanity forever.

Non-Fiction - Historical

The Soledad Children: The Fight to End Discriminatory IQ Tests by Marty Glick and Maurice Jourdane is a well-researched, historical non-fiction book that serves as a powerful indictment of a form of racial discrimination suffered by Mexican immigrants. Born and raised in a labor camp farm in Soledad, California, ten-year-old Arturo Velazquez is in third grade when he is given an English-based IQ test and placed in a class for Educable Mentally Retarded (EMR). It is 1968 and Arturo's is just one of many cases; most of the children in the room are Spanish-speaking. The Soledad Children tells the story of the class-action suit filed in 1970, Diana v. the State Board of Education, a lawsuit on behalf of thousands of Hispanic kids already placed in EMR.
This book records a history of discrimination and racism in a way that is poignant and compelling. The authors take readers through the legal action and provide insights and factual events that are psychologically disturbing. From the very beginning, the reader gets a small glimpse of the anguish of children placed in EMR when Arturo asks Maria why they are in a special class. The answer is a painful one. While this is a non-fiction book, it is well crafted and I enjoyed how the authors explored the psychological and emotional part of the characters. The writing is bold and confident, punctuated by relevant themes such as family, educational discrimination, the quest for justice and others. This book contains a message that contemporary American citizens should read. A deftly written story that will, most certainly, instruct our contemporaries.

Non-Fiction - Hobby

The Mystery Shopper Training Program: All You Ever Wanted to Know About the Best Part-Time Job by Bethany Mooradian is a non-fiction business book on how to become a mystery shopper. Professional mystery shopping or, in other words, getting paid to try out products and services anonymously and then provide feedback as per guidelines, is a fairly new thing in the internet era and this book provides a pretty thorough introduction to it. In this book, Bethany draws upon her own experiences as a professional mystery shopper and through a detailed chapter-by-chapter summary talks about what this term really means, how it works, how one gets paid, answers frequently asked questions, provides handy tips on what is expected and how to make minute observations and fill out forms, how to do audio or video feedback as required, how to file taxes and manage money, how to write reports, and also what to do if one gets caught and the common pitfalls to avoid, among other things.
I really enjoyed reading The Mystery Shopper Training Program and although I had heard of the term before, I learnt a lot by reading this book. Bethany writes in a casual, yet serious way since this is a legitimate way to earn money and also points out how to avoid scams. I also really appreciated the list of websites and the numerous resources listed at the end of the book for anyone who wants to give this a go as a side income or a part-time job. The book lays out the pros and cons of doing this as a job, and can help to determine what areas you may be interested in, and how to pick and choose the assignments that appeal to you, among other tips. This is a useful guide on how to earn money as a mystery shopper.

Non-Fiction - Humor/Comedy

When The 10 Greatest Gifts We Give Each Other begins, Barbara Lynn-Vannoy, an elementary school teacher, has settled into her life having spent more than a decade as a single mother to her daughter, Katie. When a friend wants to set her up with a man, Barb is resistant until she finds out he is none other than Steve Vannoy, best-selling author of a book that provided valuable advice to her single-parent self. After a first meeting in which Barb finds herself inside a mansion, seduced by a library of books and the perfect song, she begins a journey with a man who is more than his wealth, fame and world travel. His life is full of music and adventure and yet he’s grounded by his commitment to faith and family, especially his beloved Ma and two daughters. As the pair prepares to merge their families and lifestyles together, they are intentional about writing 10 vows they intend to live out each day. They even hang them in the bathroom where they can’t be missed and highlight a few on the refrigerator door. After several years of marriage—not all of them smooth sailing—they find the reason for their leaving an eleventh vow blank—and it propels them into the next phase of their life as Katie starts out on her own and life transitions for the entire Vannoy clan.
I loved The 10 Greatest Gifts We Give Each Other: A Memoir on the Magic of Marriage Vows by Barbara Lynn-Vannoy. The writing is superb; it is both lyrical and efficient. This is an honest book where you get a very intimate, up-close look at a relationship from its very beginning. There’s much to love about the journey as it’s filled with touching moments, delightful doses of humor, and tear-inducing sadness. It’s a memoir; it’s also a guidebook on marriage, child-rearing, and teaching. Overall, it’s a beautiful tapestry filled with music, the love of animals and family bonds that shouldn’t be missed. The vows themselves truly are gifts for Barb and Steve, and now for all who read The 10 Greatest Gifts We Give Each Other. Highly recommended!

The Mentor In Me

William Todd

Non-Fiction - Motivational

In every aspect of our lives, we all should have a mentor. You probably had a mentor and didn't know it. A mentor is someone that you confide in and trust from your personal development and business to spirituality. The mentor helps you to navigate onto a better path for the future. In this self-help book, The Mentor In Me: What To Do & What Not To Do by William Todd, the reader will learn about the author as he discovers a lot about himself. Through his own journey, while being mentored by author Bob Proctor (Thoughts Are Things, It's Not About the Money and many other works), he explains how the Seven Levels of Awareness principles changed his life and can change yours too. This book provides the tools necessary for creating and developing a mental paradigm shift in your behavior and thinking. This book offers readers the mentor approach of the deep dive from dos and don'ts to words of wisdom as they embark on their journey without being bogged down with fluff. The reader will learn a wealth of useful information as the author gives real-life examples and quotes.
I enjoyed The Mentor In Me because sometimes I can get buried under things in life that either don't suit, serve, or lead to anything productive. Reading this book has helped to unclog the wheels that are churning in my mind; as a mentor would. Just like William Todd states; with a mentor you may not always listen or agree but the goal is to acquire optimum results with each step that you take. If you're not getting the results that you desire, remember it's insane to keep on doing the same thing. In order to improve your life, you have to work at it. I love this statement by Bob Proctor that sums it up: "The Mentor in Me is not a book that you pick up and read. It’s a book you form a relationship with and you study daily for the rest of your life." Change takes practice so if you're looking for life improvements, add this book to your library. Enjoy!

In the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the number of channeled books. The channeled spirit in this book is a wise lion, who shares his concerns about the current destruction of Mother Earth. By imparting timeless and relevant information, he encourages the main character, as well as every reader, to explore their beliefs and actions. In the nonfiction work, The Lion’s Wisdom: A Channeled Text Toward Awakening Human Consciousness (Embracing Our Oneness with Mother Earth), written by Uma Shankari, several main themes – Our Oneness and Our Inner Wisdom – are fully explored. There are twenty-one chapters where various topics are further explained. Each one could be a book in itself! For example, the chapters on shame, beauty, surrender, and dignity contain strong tenets, assisting a person to awaken to a higher level of consciousness.
This book is written in a concise, easy to read manner. The best way to read it would be to approach one chapter at each sitting, allowing its messages to be absorbed into one’s being, before reading the next one. The lessons are applied through the lens of one person who realizes how self-centeredness and unwise choices have affected a once-loving marriage and other life decisions. Author Uma Shankari has given the world a beautiful gift in The Lion’s Wisdom: A Channeled Text Toward Awakening Human Consciousness (Embracing Our Oneness with Mother Earth). It is a book to be savored, and one that every reader will want to revisit again and again over the years.
