Dr. Anthony M. Criniti IV’s The Survival of the Richest establishes a direct link between the art of survival and the sciences of biology, economics, and finance. From defining the concept of survival to explaining vital terminologies like life and death, the author clarifies with real-life and historical examples the instinct for survival, and how it drives the quest for wealth. In this book, the author shares insights into the different survival categories and moves on to illustrate the relationship between survivalism and economics and finance. Readers will understand how wealth can become a powerful tool for survival and what the wealthiest can do to not only keep their wealth but to use it to survive. It is in this context that the author explores some of the gruesome acts associated with survival. What is most interesting is how survivalism fits into the perspective of evolution.
The Survival of the Richest is a great book that anyone who wants to understand the power of wealth should read. This book is very enlightening and I particularly enjoyed the author’s take on how to use wealth to survive the different struggles in life. It is well researched and written in an easy-to-read, popular style of writing that is both accessible and engaging. Dr. Anthony M. Criniti IV writes with confidence and fills the work with examples that readers can easily identify and relate to. While it provides ample explanations on survivalism, it also offers great wisdom on wealth management. This book is an eye-opener and a great tool for survival and wealth management, with surprising lessons for readers in every walk of life.

Non-Fiction - Environment

The Ethanol Papers is an extensive and detailed work of non-fiction which was penned by author Marc J Rauch. Subtitled as ‘The Whole Story on Ethanol Fuel’, this informative and straight-talking narrative takes its readers through an economic, performance-related and environmental debate which has raged on for decades all around the world: the use of ethanol versus gasoline for fuel. Though it is written in a jargon-free style to make it accessible to others, the complexities of the issue are fully considered through an enormous collection of writings on topics ranging from the power and hypocrisy of the major oil companies to satirical works that take on a myth-busting attitude.
Accompanied by numerous diagrams, photographs, quotes and content taken from various real-world sources, this epic exploration of the ethanol debate and its pros and cons is well worth a read for any theorist who enjoys getting to the real motivations behind seemingly innocuous arguments. Author Marc J Rauch writes with succinct use of detail so as not to overwhelm readers all at once, separating different instances, media mentions, governmental interferences and the like into different chapters to give a holistic view of the argument from all angles. His work is thorough and supremely well organized, with plenty of reference material and some very amusing satirical attitudes which add to the overall readability of the piece. Overall, The Ethanol Papers is by far the most conclusive and well thought out report on the debate that exists and is, therefore, essential reading for interested readers.

Non-Fiction - Environment

The Great Healing: Five Compassions That Can Save Our World by Stephen Erickson with Wendell Berry, Joel Fuhrman, MD, Jo-Anne McArthur, and Alan Lewis is an insightful book that will inspire readers to find their voices and use them; find their courage and take their stand, and remind them they have the power to create the future they want to see. The author uses animals and humans to create stories that will entertain readers and make them understand the need to take decisive action to avoid a planetary catastrophe. The Five Compassions - Compassion for Animals, Compassion for Self, Compassion for the Land, Compassion for Community, and Compassion for Democracy - are required for sustainability, health, and to fight a bigger war than World War II. The book is all about hope, awareness, evolution, healing, and compassion, and will encourage everyone to be thoughtful and understanding when it comes to the ecosystem.
The approach to the topic shows readers how everything is interconnected and how humanity is facing the planet's sixth great extinction. The Golden Rule of 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you' applies not only to humans but also to how we treat animals and the entire world. The book is a good way to encourage readers to change the way they treat the planet and the other living creatures who have the same rights as humans on this planet. The extensive and structured manner in which the topic has been dealt with creates awareness so that readers can embrace the five compassions and have a chance of achieving the Great Healing. The exquisite creatures, the different stories, and the journey into places that are hells on earth are engaging ways to make readers aware of their individual roles in saving humanity, animals, and the planet from being exploited and destroyed. The poem at the end of the book by Wendell Berry sums up the words in the book and leaves readers with wisdom, insights, and profundity.

The 30-Day Job Search: Supercharge your Resume, Renew your Motivation, Secure & Succeed at more Job Interviews, and Negotiate your Salary like a Pro! by Hamza Zaouali is a story about Lisa finding a job. It is based on a real-life story. Lisa only has a month to find a new job or she will be deported from Dubai, so she hires a coach to help her and finds many new techniques to assist her job search. Lisa learns how to write a proper resume, and how to sell herself for the best salary. She also learns new techniques for Linkedin and Google search. The story is a step by step guide to finding a job.
I thought that The 30-Day Job Search by Hamza Zaouali was a real eye-opener. I loved that he uses a story to show the steps, instead of just giving them straight to readers, as most books do. I thought that Lisa was a very likable character and her coach was fascinating. The world-building was well done. I have never been to Dubai but could picture it clearly. This book also has free templates for resumes and email letters that you can download. I cannot wait to try them out. The graphs he uses were a nice touch too. I think this book would also benefit freelancers, not just job seekers. I would definitely recommend having a notepad and pen with you or a way to bookmark pages because there are a lot of cool techniques you will want to try. If you are a freelancer or job seeker, I definitely recommend this book, even if you have been out of a job for a long time.

Non-Fiction - General

The Letters: How a Mixed Race Child Learned About His French Mother and Heritage by Daniel Freeman, EdD is the story of the author as he finds out why he always felt like the odd man out in his family. His father was an African-American man who fought for his country and when he died, a box of secrets was opened. When he passed away, Daniel went to his childhood home where he found two trunkfuls of secrets that his father had kept from his family. He found pictures and letters in French and as each letter was translated, he learned so many secrets that his father kept from Daniel. He found out who his real mother was, where she came from, and how he had a whole family he never knew about. What will Daniel do with this information? Will he reach out to the woman that gave birth to him?
I cannot even imagine what Daniel went through. I don’t know how he got the heart to move from one picture to another and read one letter after the other. He experienced something heart-shattering and he had to deal with the information just after he lost his father who he loved a lot. He pushed through it all, he welcomed the information and used that to ground himself. Daniel’s journey reads like a letter to a dear friend and that friend is you. The narrative reads like a dialogue between the author and, as the reader, you will experience his emotions and his journey first hand. The pictures he shared offered a fascinating look at an era long gone, but still exists in the images. He also shares the actual letter translations, which drew a much clearer picture of what his father was going through in that phase of his life. I really enjoyed this book. It was fun, surprisingly quick to read, and enjoyable to boot! The narrative is smooth and the author has done a great job of sharing his story while respecting his father, his birth mother, and the woman he grew up calling his mother.

The Republican Party, Apostles Of Failure, Unfit To Govern
Richard J. Weisberg

Non-Fiction - Gov/Politics

The Republican Party, Apostles Of Failure, Unfit To Govern is a work of non-fiction focused on government and politics in the United States, and was penned by author Richard J. Weisberg. With its specific focus put on the policy decisions involving economics, the volume tracks the prior ‘American System’ of commerce, which once had America very high on the list of economic world powers, compared to the newly-emerged Republican plans of the last half-century, in which a fantasy of low taxation for the wealthy has led the country into inequality, privatization, and turmoil. In his treatise on the issues, Weisberg attempts to model a future solution from the successes of the past.
Knowing very little about the history of American economics, I found this volume to be a thorough education on the topic, as well as an eye-opening read for the twists and turns that have led the USA into its current state under the presidency of Donald Trump. Author Richard J. Weisberg treats the subject matter fairly with no undue political bias, looking at clear financial facts and tracking the genuine decline of the American economy and market since the mid-1970s. The writing style is clear and concise, with plenty of additional information that helps to glean a full understanding of the subject matter at hand, and well-explained examples from recent and 19th-century history that make a convincing argument for Weisberg’s case. Overall, The Republican Party, Apostles Of Failure, Unfit To Govern is an insightful and thought-provoking read for all.

Non-Fiction - Gov/Politics

The Boiling Frog: How Complacency and Ignorance Created Our Leadership Crisis and What We Can Do About It is a work of non-fiction which is focused on current socioeconomic and political affairs, and was penned by author Michael Darmody. As the title of the work suggests, this volume discusses important inequalities and deliberate oversights made by those who are currently in power and that small proportion of people who hold vast amounts of the world’s wealth. The volume seeks to explain why those with the purse strings are so reluctant to make changes, but also acts as an impetus for change and encourages the rest of us to move beyond ignorance and complacency towards a better tomorrow.
Issues like climate change, inequality, and the wealth gap have indeed gone on too long, and we all need to be reading more works with the ethos and ideology of authors like Michael Darmody. One of the things which I particularly enjoyed about this volume was its high level of accessibility, in that politically minded people and those who are brand new to the concepts can both engage with the material and get so much out of it. The prose is well composed with dynamic calls to action and clear explanations of the methods by which change can occur. The organization of the ideas is such that specific areas are easy to find again and cross-reference for future study and engagement. Overall, I would definitely recommend The Boiling Frog for any reader looking to wake up and be more well informed in politics, economics, and culture.

How Much Big Is The Sky: A Memoir of a Mother’s Love and Unfathomable Loss is a work of non-fiction telling the true-life tale of a mother’s grief at losing her son, and was penned by author Sherry Chapman. Unmasking the raw emotional experience of sudden tragic news and the agonizing process of grief that follows with the loss of a child, Chapman’s fearless and inspiring account takes readers through every stage with a full heart and immersive narration. There is a clear message against drunk driving and strong advocacy for making changes to the law after Ryan’s passing, which also gives this memoir its strong social activism themes.
Author Sherry Chapman writes with literary confidence that makes readers feel as though they are in safe hands, even through the darkest and most emotionally precarious moments of this hard-hitting reading experience. Readers who have experienced similar sudden tragedies are certain to take heart and support when reading Chapman’s account, and for those lucky enough to be ignorant of the experience, it’s a true window into the soul and psyche that, once read, cannot ever be forgotten again. The advocacy for safe teen driving raises an important educational message too, and there are some extremely powerful images of Sherry at different stages of her grief which would make for superb talking points for schools and youth groups everywhere. Overall, How Much Big Is The Sky: A Memoir of a Mother’s Love and Unfathomable Loss is an incredible and highly emotive work of memoir that is sure to touch the heart of anyone that reads it.

The End of Chronic Fatigue

Non-Fiction - Health - Fitness

The End of Chronic Fatigue: How to Have Endless Energy & Feel Fantastic by Zana Carver and Gina Heath is a non-fiction self-help book written by two authors who connected over a mutual understanding of a problem that seems to be universally misunderstood. Carver and Heath tackle the issue of chronic fatigue, exhaustion, depression, anxiety, a general feeling of “brain fog” and a number of other related symptoms. Where this book takes a unique turn in a direction few other guides venture is that it deals almost exclusively with un/misdiagnosed and improperly treated thyroid problems. The first stage in combating this comes with appropriate testing, which is thoroughly detailed to ensure, as a patient, that one is asking for (and receiving) the correct procedures. From there, Carver and Heath move forward in addressing the results, medication, science, nutrition (with recipes), and management of the diagnosis.
As someone who has long suffered from fatigue and always just chalked it up to not getting enough sleep or sheer emotional exhaustion,The End of Chronic Fatigue by Zana Carver and Gina Heath was something of a revelation to me. The science described is a little complex and required a second look, but everything really did make sense. The personal elements imparted by Carver and Heath, particularly Carver's cancer journey, made the book feel less like a medical guide and more like a friend explaining the what's-what about our bodies. The thyroid is a gland that is woefully overlooked and the perspective that there is more to our fatigue than the standard (and often misdiagnosed) issues was an absolute eye-opener. Easy to read and comprehend, I'd recommend this book to anyone who suffers from, or cares for someone who suffers from, chronic fatigue.

Non-Fiction - Health - Fitness

There are books that are eye-opening, some that entertain readers and fill them with the delights they look for when exploring new ideas or journeying with relatable characters, but when I opened The Vail Method: Dr. Ehrlich's Guide to Getting Better Not Just Older by Mathew Ehrlich, MD, I couldn't help but exclaim: “At last, here is a book for me!” Since I turned 40, I have been experiencing the symptoms that are captured in the opening pages of this book: the restlessness at night, the overwhelming feeling of having much to do with little time and less energy, the need for reading glasses, the “sex drive that is as tired as you are,” and many aging signs that are as disturbing as they are real. The book opens with statements and words that capture the familiar experiences and feelings of the intended audience and then moves on to define what it is all about. It is about the “lactate threshold testing,” a wellness method that is designed to help readers age gracefully.
In this book, the author offers a holistic approach to pursuing and embracing a healthier lifestyle and aging gracefully. The high points of the Vail Method are summarized in four core aspects: plant-based diet and nutrition, aerobic exercise with lactate threshold testing and heart rate-based training, rest, with avoidance of overtraining, and adequate sleep, and mindfulness and relaxation. Maintaining an ideal body weight and good nutrition are key in this method. This book is packed with useful information and proven steps to a healthy lifestyle. There are very interesting topics, insights, and exercises that are designed for optimal results. I found answers in chapters dealing with mindfulness and the author's take on how to tell the mind to shut up, optimizing the fitness routine, and recovering after downtime. The Vail Method: Dr. Ehrlich's Guide to Getting Better Not Just Older is a book with scientifically proven steps to a life of wholeness, written in a style that is conversational and a tone that is strong and authoritative. The author combines strong writing with real-life stories to craft a message that will bring more value to the lives of his readers. A must-read for anyone who wants to stay fit and age with grace.
