Human beings are the smartest animals on earth. The Art of Hunting Humans: A radical and confronting explanation of the human mind by Sidney Mazzi is an engaging book that delves into the key aspects of human behavior. There are tips in the book that will guide readers on how to take advantage of the ignorance humans display about their nature. It will also help readers to know themselves better and understand human behavior and evaluate it. The book gives interesting insights about human behavior, how to identify the patterns that can be explored, choosing the perfect prey to hunt and how to manipulate weaker humans. There are tricks and tools in the book that are helpful when it comes to hunting prey and it will also encourage humans to get out of their survival mode and get to know themselves.

The author speaks about a topic that has not been discussed much before in a very different way. The concept is simple but since humans are complicated beings, it might take readers a while to understand and incorporate the teachings of the book in their lives. It is also interesting to read how the author describes superior human beings. Reading this book is good for awareness of how the human mind actually works and the importance of communication. It is a good book for all those readers who are looking to make changes in their lives and want to change their perception of the world around them.

Within the first few paragraphs of The Breakthrough in Two Acts by Fredric C. Hartman, Ph.D., one breathes a very deep sigh of appreciation for something truly fresh and intelligent, startled by the clear recognition that, “Hey, I’m in the presence of something brisk and new, something that explains with crystal clarity this current life I live, something, even more importantly, that I can actually use to live it better." Some of his earliest words explain the basic parameters defining this recognition: “Our brain keeps believing danger is everywhere, as it was neurologically designed to do.” “But shouldn’t a sturdy, stable awareness be as basic to civilized life as shelter, or clothing?”

It might seem axiomatic that an academic subject written about by an accomplished academic would sound, well, academic. However, The Breakthrough in Two Acts, a remarkable evaluation, assessment, and practical revelation of human consciousness and our intimate connection with it, reads more like Fredric C. Hartman is a poet, not a doctor, or a mighty wise guru sitting alone atop a hill. That is the pleasure one feels while reading: not like he is listening to a lecture, but like he has wandered into a private conversation revealing the big secret behind our existence. Almost like someone finally unearthed that rumored-to-exist-but-must-not-be-seen instruction booklet. If all of this seems a bit light-hearted for such a serious subject, it is because the effect of Dr. Hartman’s book is to make one feel enlightened, and yes, a bit more light-hearted. But, in a most down-to-earth and useful way. And finally, I will say something I have never said before: Everyone needs to read this book. Everyone should read this book.

The story of the original Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the former King Edward VIII, is one of utmost love and devotion. It is a story filled with tragedy and yet, with a strong desire never to give up what is most important in life; love. For King Edward VIII, the love and dedication that he had for his country and everything that it desired of him was important, but there was nothing more important than the love he had for Wallis. For her, he was willing to do whatever it took, and she was willing to do anything she could for him as well. But could either of them truly be happy if the king chose to remain as such? Or if she chose to remain in her marriage? The King and Mrs. Simpson by Erin Schulz is where you’ll see the true meaning of love and a willingness to give up all.

This is a story that’s going to make you think again about what love really means. Being willing to give up everything for someone else is one thing, but actually giving it up, especially when what you have to give up is worth so much, can be a different thing altogether. For King Edward VIII, he had more to give up than anyone, but he had such a strong love for Wallis that he was willing and actually did give up the throne. This is their story and it is one where each tries to sacrifice for the other. It’s a story of love, sacrifice, devotion and definitely destiny, but also of proving to the world that nothing is stronger than all of these things in The King and Mrs. Simpson by Erin Schulz.

The Unbound Soul: A Visionary Guide to Spiritual Transformation and Enlightenment by Richard L. Haight is a spiritual self-help book. It’s Richard L. Haight’s memoir as he tells his stories of how he found enlightenment. He has traveled to the Amazon and Tokyo, just to name a couple of places where he found his path. He gives us some meditation techniques and tells us how they are to be used. He uses different religions to explain how he found his 'is'ness, as he calls it. He also explains how the mind and body work together to find the meaning of life, so to speak. Richard L. Haight even talks about the differences between Soul and Spirit to help guide you.

I thought Richard L. Haight’s The Unbound Soul covers a fascinating topic. I should put in a warning that he does talk about suicide and has a couple of strong language words in it, so if that bothers you, you might not like it. I loved how he told his stories. The Amazon one was my favorite; not sure I would have had that courage. The way he uses different religions like Christianity and Buddhism was a nice touch. I should warn you that you need to have a pretty open mind to read this; some of it may seem far fetched. But Richard L. Haight gives accurate accounts in great detail and gives reasons behind it. I am going to try his meditation techniques; I found them to be refreshing, compared to the usual ones. If you are soul-searching like I am, then I would definitely recommend this book; you might even have a couple of 'a-ha' moments like I did.

The Afterlife by Giulia Jeary Knap has the subtitle, Hereafter and Here at Hand, and an explanatory cover note: Three tried and tested methods to stay in touch with those who have gone before us. This goes a long way to explain what the book is about but does not expand on the wealth of guidance and information to be found in this relatively short volume. Part One of the book deals with extracts from numerous studies of near-death experiences, instances of clairvoyance and accounts of contacts with the deceased. In this section, the author presents a detailed picture of a world beyond our normal senses and vivid descriptions of life in the hereafter. There are numerous references to books, studies and research that have contributed to Ms Jeary Knap’s volume, backed up with links to websites and a bibliography for those who may wish to continue their research. In Part Two, the author goes on to describe several simple exercises which would put one in the frame of mind to make contact with departed loved ones - mostly gentle relaxation techniques that would not be beyond the reach of the general layperson. The author is fairly clear that she, along with most professional mediums, believes that any normal person can achieve contact with the deceased and her book sets out to explain how.

The Afterlife is a surprisingly clear and straightforward work on a subject often shrouded in mystery, prejudice and misconception. Considered taboo by many philosophies and religions, the majority of people shy away from contemplating or considering what (if anything) happens when we die. It is refreshing therefore to come across such a clear-eyed view of a subject which will concern every single one of us at some time or another. In this work, Ms Jeary Knap has managed to rekindle in me an interest which had laid dormant for many years and I am grateful for that. An excellent book on a difficult subject, which deftly avoids becoming creepy or mawkish. A great introduction for those with a casual interest and also a useful source for those looking for additional material or direction. I will certainly make a point of reading the author’s companion book: Looking Beyond the Fishbowl.

Powerful, evocative, and permeated with spiritual energy, 365 Blessings to Heal Myself and the World: Really Living One's Spirituality in Everyday Life by Pierre Pradervand is a spiritual gem, a compendium of blessings for every single day of the year, each opening up a portal into the soul of humanity, a fresh view of divinity, each an immersion into the gentle love that creates, heals, nourishes, and empowers us and the world around us. This book is the perfect tool that helps readers create a new consciousness of wellness and it is incredible in that it reminds readers of their power to utter blessings upon themselves and upon the world.

It opens with a powerful blessing, one that speaks to me in a special way: “I bless myself sincerely and joyfully for being the utterly beautiful divine creature I am, at one with the Source of infinite Love.” Here is a blessing that reminds us of the beauty of who we are. While the blessings in this book allow us to speak healing and love into our human experience, they remind us of the power to transform life by developing an attitude that is God-like. In a world broken by evil, hatred and negative energy, Pierre Pradervand's writing reminds us that we are bigger than our pain, that we can transcend the darkness of our human frailty and rediscover the light of hope, that we can change perspective by communicating something positive in every day we live. Pierre Pradervand's 365 Blessings to Heal Myself and the World: Really Living One's Spirituality in Everyday Life is a gift to be received with gratitude and to pass on generously.

Fight to the End is a nonfiction sports memoir written by Eric Hanna. In his prologue, Hanna describes basketball as having been “amusing, humbling, ego-building, inspiring, deflating, and above all, entertainingly addictive.” In his memoir, he describes how a sport that he ended up quitting before he had even begun turned out to be “my best friend, my therapist, my joy and my heartache.” Hanna was nine years old when he first considered playing basketball. The lake-effect snow and bitter cold of an Ohio winter made walking into that heated gym on a Saturday morning and getting involved with a youth basketball program tempting -- if nothing else, it would be better than trying to play out in the cold. As he entered the gym, however, he felt completely out of place. Everyone seemed to know what they were doing out there, even his friends. Hanna quietly turned around and left the gym. Then something completely out of the ordinary happened a few days later. Marty Paes, a family friend and the dad of one of Hanna’s friends, called and asked to speak with him. Marty had seen Hanna at the gym. He thought that maybe Hanna might want to try going there with Marty and his son, John, the next Saturday. Hanna swallowed the fear and indecision and decided to go. It changed his life.

Fight to the End is well written and inspirational. I marveled at his resilience throughout his years as a player and loved seeing how his heart has always been in the game. Hanna gives the reader insights into what it’s like being on the bench even as he shows that those waiting players are in many ways even more important than the superstars who get to play for more than just a minute or two late in the game. I especially appreciated how he introduces the reader to the strategy behind the game and how it’s played. Seeing the action through his eyes has measurably enhanced my appreciation for, and understanding of, the game. Hanna’s story is well written and reads like fiction; his excitement for and love of the game blazes forth on every page. You can feel his frustration as a vertically challenged teen, his exhilaration at the growth spurt that changed everything, and his ultimate triumphs as a scholarship athlete in college. Fight to the End is most highly recommended.
