Fiction - Thriller - Espionage

In The Black Fox by Gordon Bickerstaff, scientist Gavin Shawlens has been targeted by the CIA for assassination for holding vital information that could bring the entire country to its knees. MI5 secret service captain Zoe Tampsin has been assigned to keep him alive and takes him underground until he can remember what is so valuable to the US government. A huge manhunt begins as not only the CIA trawl the UK to find them, but also British special forces who have been promised billions in military upgrades in exchange for Shawlens. With few weapons and even her own mentor trying to track them down, Zoe is facing her toughest mission yet and a decision that goes against all her instincts. But even she doesn't realize how far the intelligence services will go to flush them out.
I am not normally a fan of espionage novels but this author's skill in storytelling has certainly changed my mind. The plot is unique and fast paced with twists and turns throughout. I could not see how Zoe could escape from the dangerous situations, but somehow, she did. Every one of the many characters was so realistic, but all with personality flaws which made them all the more believable. The intricate details in the dialogue and narrative showed the author had researched his subject well. The deals that went on behind the closed doors of intelligence agencies were very interesting. I loved the relationship between Zoe and her brother Michael who knew her character so well; it was clear Zoe only allowed a few people close to her and he was definitely top of the list. Without giving anything away, I thought the scene between Karen and Zoe was a real tear-jerker. Zoe and Gavin had a great relationship too. They were complete opposite personalities and their exchanges were quite comical in parts as away from the subject of science, he wasn't the brightest or bravest. The tension and suspense were broken up cleverly with real emotional moments but also humour too. I highly recommend this novel but be prepared to go on a roller-coaster of never-ending action, thrills and intrigue.

Fiction - Thriller - Espionage

Gazelle in the Shadows by Michelle Peach is an enthralling tale of adventure and espionage set in the mid-90s. Elizabeth Booth is a student of Arabic at Durham University, someone who loves to travel, obsessed with the desire to visit legendary places. When the opportunity is offered for her to travel to Damascus to perfect her language skills, it is a dream come true. In Syria, she feels welcomed and builds new friendships and a relationship, but little does she know that the calm waters of this culture hide dangerous currents. Soon she is caught up in a web of lies and betrayal, a murder that involves MI6 and the Syrian secret police. Can she make it out alive?
The narrative begins fairly slowly with an encounter with the professor but it gathers speed pretty quickly and the reader is soon immersed in the emotional life of the protagonist, following her through exotic and lush places as she navigates this new culture and an ancient city. The language is gorgeous and the terrific descriptions capture cultural and physical details of the city with precision, giving readers clear images of where the story takes place. Gazelle in the Shadows features an interesting cast of characters, a strong and suspenseful plot nourished by a multifaceted conflict, and a setting that equally entices the reader. Michelle Peach takes readers into an adventure that is fraught with danger, along with the compelling protagonist. This is a book that makes the reader feel as though they are part of the world it describes.

Fiction - Thriller - Espionage

The Last Caliph by T L Williams is the fourth book in the Logan Alexander series and it takes the reader from the United States to Turkey and Syria as Logan goes undercover to track down the current Caliph who is continuing to run ISIS operations. While the President of the US has announced that ISIS has been defeated and is preparing to withdraw the American troops, Logan and his old allies at the CIA are not convinced. At great risk to himself, and despite strained relations between himself and his wife, Logan arrives in Turkey with the idea of crossing the border into Syria, with the help of a young Muslim woman who supports the extremist regime. The subplot involves Logan’s brother-in-law and adds an extra twist to the plot.
I loved The Last Caliph by T L Williams. It is an excellent, on the edge of your seat story in which the pace and action never let up. I was compelled to read this in almost one sitting. The book is crammed with technical details which only someone who was totally familiar with weaponry, aircraft and espionage techniques first hand could produce. This lends the book authenticity and takes it out of the realm of the usual run of the mill spy story. The author has created a believable character in Logan Alexander. While accomplishing his mission, he remains down to earth and human. There is no extraneous detail, just enough to inform the reader without slowing the story which gallops from beginning to end. I loved the realism, the possibility that these events could take place, and all the loose ends were tied up and followed through. Despite this being the third book in the series, it can be read as a standalone and I for sure will be looking to read the earlier books in the series. A well deserved 5 stars for a book I highly recommend.

Fiction - Thriller - Espionage

A Fox in the Fold: A Runway Dreams Novel by T.K. Ambers is a crime thriller with strong hints of espionage. Bell Price is shocked and she knows things will never get back to normal. After her parents’ murder, an attack on the police department makes her think this is more than a coincidence. While the police department thinks a sniper has shot Bradley from two buildings away, with no one to blame, Bell isn’t convinced that the Price family is safe. But events that follow indicate this isn’t an isolated, somewhat random murder. Bell eventually becomes convinced that the Price family is involved in a deadly game and could be a target. And it really is. But who wants to take out her entire family and why?
A Fox in the Fold: A Runway Dreams Novel immerses the reader in a world akin to that which James Patterson creates for his characters. The characters are elaborately and skillfully developed and I enjoyed the way the author explores their psyches. Readers encounter a protagonist with her siblings caught up in a deadly game and they have to navigate a dangerous world together to stay alive and figure out who wants them dead. The writing is top notch for a new voice in the genre, tantalizing and packed with a lot of exciting dialogues. The drama starts from the first page and it brilliantly captures the depth of the characters and the fears that haunt them. A Fox in the Fold: A Runway Dreams Novel is a page-turner and a sheer delight for fans of espionage and crime thrillers.

The Cold Trail

Fiction - Thriller - Conspiracy

The Cold Trail is a work of suspenseful dramatic fiction penned by author J.C. Fields and the fourth book in the Sean Kruger detective mystery series. Retired FBI profiler Kruger is busy teaching at his university campus when a graduate student is suddenly kidnapped. Kruger finds the circumstances too familiar to ignore and sets about reopening a case from more than twenty years ago, and a series of further disappearances in its wake. With the help of his IT expert and friend JR Diminski, the data is crunched and the clues are unearthed to attempt to catch a killer, but Kruger has to face the risk that he might fail at the case yet again.
Readers who enjoy a tightly contained plot with strict turns and sharp twists are certain to unpick every enjoyable detail of author J.C. Fields’s creation. Sean Kruger is well developed as a powerful and capable central figure, leading the investigation with a gravitas that well becomes his age and experience. I found the plot links and evidence highly realistic, like following a real crime scene, and the profiling skills that Kruger displays are beautiful to watch and figure out alongside him. The descriptions add to the scenes only when necessary, relying largely on dialogue and character representation to drive the most compelling of moments. As such, the narration is quick to read and full of little details not to be missed, making it a fast-paced page-turner. Overall, I would highly recommend The Cold Trail to crime fans everywhere.

Fiction - Thriller - Conspiracy

Into the Darkness by Sibel Hodge is a gripping psychological thriller. What do the missing, the vigilante and the detective all have in common? Toni is being held a prisoner in a basement. She discovered something on the internet that she wasn’t meant to see, resulting in her abduction and nobody can hear her screams for help. Her mother and Mitchell, an ex-operative for the SAS, start looking for Toni and what Mitchell discovers has him racing to get her before time runs out. DS Warren Carter just wanted an easier life. The murder of a couple draws him into a case that is anything but easy; the deeper he looks, the more twisted the crime. The missing, the vigilante and the detective – each has their own story to tell.
Into the Darkness by Sibel Hodge is a chilling story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Delving into the dark web, a place where nobody should go, this is a gripping tale of torture and evil. Told from the viewpoint of the three main characters, in the first person, each chapter is short and to the point, each leaving you wanting more. It is a dark story, one that moves at a good pace with plenty of suspense and tension. The characters are real, they are identifiable and wholly believable, their stories weaved into one big story that will haunt you long after you finish it. This is a story of layers, each one going deeper and leading to darker layers, interspersed with a bit of humor which did lighten things up. Thoroughly enjoyed this, highly recommended for anyone who loves a crime thriller that goes just that little bit further.

Professor K: The Final Quest by Gabriel Farago is a stand-alone thriller and part of the Jack Rogan Mysteries Series. Dr. Alexandra Delacroix, Nobel Laureate, wants to continue the work on genome-editing pursued by the late Professor Kozakievicz. She has a God-given opportunity when the Vatican requests her help to save the Pope who is dying of an auto-immune disease. It is imperative that he remains alive to enable the conclusion of a crucial peace process. However, the secret to unlocking his disease is hidden away deep in time. The story transports us back in history to the Ottoman Empire and the work of another physician who is inextricably linked to the modern-day da Baggio family. Lorenza da Baggio wins Top Chef Europe, but she barely has time to celebrate her success before she is kidnapped and drawn into a sinister game played by the mafia.
Gabriel Farago writes effortlessly to present an absorbing and intriguing modern-day thriller steeped in the rich history of Italy. I was impressed with the many complex threads which were expertly interwoven and brought together to form a very satisfying finale to the book. I loved the wonderful descriptions of Venice, including the art and the buildings, all of which lent a real depth to the storyline. The dialogue was expertly written and spoken by a dazzling array of very charismatic characters including the rather unpredictable and dangerous Jack Rogan. Professor K: The Final Quest is a literary delight brimfull of culture, politics, terrorism, the mafia, and medicine. I can't fault it. Superb!

Fiction - Thriller - Medical

The Lame Duck by Bernard Leo Remakus is a medical thriller. Bob Cassidy is probably the worst doctor in the USA. Already on his third suit for malpractice, Cassidy is about to find himself stripped of all hospital privileges. Angela Fratello is called the Angel of Death. Fratello is the top malpractice lawyer in the USA; she knows how to own the courtroom and own it big. On a skiing trip, she starts to suffer from severe pain in the foot and heads to the nearest facility for treatment – the county hospital where Bob Cassidy works. So begins the start of a long and involved relationship, the perfect setting for the perfect crime, and a love story that knows no bounds. The Angel of Death is on the warpath and no doctor is safe from her wrath after she nearly loses her life in the medical facility.
The Lame Duck by Bernard Leo Remakus is a gripping tale of love and crime. I got lost in this, unable to put it down until the end. This is an incredibly well-written tale, an in-depth, thrilling and fast-paced novel that will hold your attention. It is a mixture of fiction and medical fact, a combination that lends the story an air of reality and will have you believe, at times, that you could be reading a true story. Let’s face it, there is no doubt that this kind of thing happens all the time! The characters are fitting, incredibly well developed and likable – in the sense that you will begin to identify with them. The story centers on the greed of hospital management, a greed that puts money before care that will ultimately cost – either the lives of the patients or the hospital in damages. I would recommend this for anyone who likes medical thrillers and I guarantee you won’t put it down.

Fear is everywhere and he does not know who to trust. Can he find out what really happened and avenge his brother?
The Consultant is a very satisfying thriller, one that you will not be able to put down. I think I read it in one go, without any breaks, and I had the time of my life. You rarely come across a novel that just clicks with you and you get lost in it. I enjoyed Hunter’s progress, his thirst to find answers and his determination to make it work. The pace was fast and the plot grew at a heart-thumping rate, which made the story even more enjoyable. I just loved how sarcastic Hunter is throughout the novel. He matures, but you still find that fire in him until the very end. He is not one for apologies, but he knows he is good. That confidence and charisma had me hooked right from the beginning. The author kept the tension and the momentum going and ensured that once I started reading, I did not want to stop.

Fiction - Thriller - Political

When a U.S. Senator is found dead in his hotel room in Brazil, Max Ford, a former CIA operative turned private detective, takes notice, not the least because Senator Jeffrey Lance was her friend, but his wife, Allison, was also Maxine’s best friend. Before long, Max finds herself up to her neck in deaths, conspiracies and even the “deep state.” With her many connections within the government, Maxine Ford has access that most private detectives would die for, but she also knows from past experience that when she starts rocking the boat at this level, people get agitated and that is not good for her health. In The Beekeeper’s Secret (Max Ford Thrillers), Sally Fernandez brings us a chillingly realistic tale of natural medicine and honey bees versus 'Big Pharma' and the trillions of dollars that are at stake in the battle to discover a cure for that most pernicious of diseases – cancer.
If you love conspiracy theories, especially ones that involve the very highest echelons of the US government, you’ll adore Sally Fernandez’s The Beekeeper's Secret. This story is only one of the Max Ford thrillers this author has penned and, although the story stands alone as a readable thriller, there is a connection to earlier tales so having read those would be a definite advantage. Fernandez writes with clarity and with evidently well-done research as she fleshes out a story that has scientific undertones. Her ability to clearly elucidate scientific research to her readers is definitely a winning hallmark of this author’s style. The plot twists and turns with surprising regularity as the story races to its final conclusion, yet still leaves the door open for the next book in the Max Ford series. I enjoyed this read and would definitely put Sally Fernandez high on my list of excellent thriller writers.
