Guardians of the Crystal Skulls is the first book in a new series. Linda Arena offers readers a science fiction series that will keep readers coming back for more. The Earth is facing catastrophic changes from a shift in the Earth's axis. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes are causing the tectonic plates to move, islands are sinking, and the death toll is rising; nowhere is safe. The leading character is Rachel, a widow in her mid-fifties. Rachel was raised by her grandfather after the death of her parents. He owned a thousand-acre squash farm at the base of Mount Shasta. As a young girl, Rachel would sit next to the lake and watch the mountain. She witnessed space ships coming and going. As an adult she once again sits and watches the mountain. Many times she has seen the tall figure in the hooded robe. He knows it's time to approach her. His name is King Midas; his mission is to save planet Earth and its residents, but he can't do it without Rachel's assistance.

Linda Arena has created a group of "aliens" that have lived on Earth for many centuries. She has drawn together the myths of Atlantis and Greek Mythology to produce an action-packed science fiction thriller. The characters are fascinating. Rachel is the lead, but Arena has not skimped with the secondary characters. She has created characters that the reader will love and feel as though they know them personally. She skillfully demonstrates the power of forgiveness and shows how people can change. Deftly she pulls in current events, such as the tsunami in Indonesia. I enjoyed this story and will watch for the next installment.

Angel Through The Storms by Clement Binnings Jr. is a powerful fictional story that grabs the reader from the first page. Lola Parrish grew up watching her father in drunken rages abuse her mother. As she grows up his attentions turn to her, and one night in a drunken rage, he rapes Lola, his own daughter. Fleeing, Lola heads for the only refuge she knows, New Orleans and her best friend Corinne. When she discovers she is pregnant, there is no doubt she will keep the baby; her personality changes, her panic attacks lessen and she becomes serene. This child that was conceived out of evil will come into this world as a special child: a crystal child who shows a powerful force of love; a child who, when his eyes gaze upon you, you can't look away; a child who is wise beyond his years. This is Grover Parrish. When her father enters her world again, can Lola weather the storms of life? Will she let go and learn to love the only man that has been in her life, her former doctor?

This book is difficult to review because I do not want to give away the plot. The plot was delicious, making it difficult to lay down. This book is a love story with a spiritual side and a tragic side; a story that shows good and evil existing together and fighting against each other. The characters are powerful and seem to draw the reader into the midst of them. The book does start out a little rough, but that sets the stage for what is to follow: a deeply riveting novel.

More Than Anything in the World is a very special true story in time, delicately written by Kathleen S. Mueller. This novel is a biography of Kathleen’s parents, Frank J. Mueller and Marion Altenburg Mueller, and their experiences during World War II. This remarkable story starts on Thanksgiving Day, 1941, when Frank joined the U.S. Army. He meets the love of his life, Marion, on February 13, 1942, while she was employed as a registered nurse. They fall passionately and deeply in love and marry on December 19, 1942. Frank and Marion then start corresponding by letters, and this novel contains many of the nearly 1,000 letters they wrote to each other during that time. Their letters and story are filled with intrigue, laughter, love and adventure. Through these letters, we find the true story of Frank and Marion which includes a rare and intimate look into their life and struggles during the World War II era.

This completely inspiring, romantic, comedic, and intricately written biography had me at the Introduction, and from that point on, I could not put it down! This biography was extremely organized, easy to read and even contained detailed footnotes at the end of the pages which were very helpful in understanding the full scope of their love story. It is a biography about two very ordinary people, but it is anything but ordinary; it is truly EXTRAORDINARY! The reader is able to visualize the World War II era complete with the lingo from the 1940’s which had me laughing and crying. The love story between Frank and Marion is very intimate, tender and heart-rending. It left me envying the previous generation and how much they treasured every moment and enjoyed life to the fullest. Complete with photos, letters, cards and advertisements from the 1940’s, and the most compiled and gorgeous family tree I have ever seen, this biography is a must read!

This Doesn’t Happen In The Movies by Renee Pawlish is a story about one wannabe private-eye named Reed Ferguson. With a love of the old movies and detective shows, his favorite is The Big Sleep with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, and he plans on being another Sam Spade. When a beautiful rich woman walks into his office and hires him to find her dead husband, he can’t believe he has actually scored his first case. He soon begins to realize she is not what she pretends to be. How does she know her husband is dead? Why is she sticking with him if he is cheating on her all the time? As the lies start to pile up and her stories keep changing daily, she soon becomes more of a suspect than a client; but Reed has vowed to help her. Now with both their lives being threatened and the FBI becoming involved, are they really who they say they are?

This is one witty, hilarious detective story that will keep the reader glued to the pages till the very end. It is a very short book and can be read in a couple hours. Once I started this book, there was no putting it down till I finished it. One cannot help but like the cast of characters, especially the two brothers, Ace and Deuce, and their other brother, Bob...the sane one of the three. With plenty of twists and turns throughout the book and the added suspense to a hilarious ending, this cleanly-written cozy-type mystery will fit right in for all those who love this type of genre. As the title goes, this does not happen in the movies, but can a movie help solve the mystery?

The Golden Pathway is a heart-gripping children’s story written by Donna M. McDine with illustrations by K.C. Snider. This story takes place during the dreadful days when people were allowed to own slaves and abuse them. A boy named David lives on a farm with his ma and pa. His pa is a mean soul and owns a slave named Jenkins who is just sixteen years old and works in the cotton fields for him. One night, David hears the terrible screams of agony coming from the barn where Jenkins is being whipped by Pa. David feels a great amount of compassion for Jenkins and knows that slavery is wrong. David is compelled to do everything in his power to help Jenkins because he knows he will soon die from the continual beatings. David will have to find incredible strength and courage to help Jenkins escape slavery and to stop the horrible beatings and torture inflicted upon him unjustly.

The Golden Pathway is written specifically for children 8-12 years old and is written perfectly to their level of understanding. It is easy to comprehend and the plot flows smoothly. The illustrations are beautifully depicted and complement the wording immensely. I found this story to be powerful, inspiring and something that will provide children with a valuable lesson about slavery and freedom as part of American History. I can see this book also providing a valuable tool for children to ask questions and bring about important conversation. I feel strongly that this book is a must read for all children ages 8 and up.

Toby, The Pet Therapy Dog, and His Hospital Friends, written by Charmaine Hammond and illustrated by Rose Anne Prevec, is an adorable book to share with children. Not only is the story enjoyable and the pictures well done, this is a great message to share with children of thinking about others and helping others. Every Wednesday Toby goes to the hospital and spends time with the children and an elderly woman. Toby and those he interacts with all look forward to the Wednesday visits, and Toby helps the children and Mrs. Smith feel better and smile while staying in the hospital.

This story is well written and a good length for young children. Toby is a great role model, even if he is a dog! The children will see and hear about Toby doing this kind act, and this is a positive message encouraging them to help others in a way they are able. The questions included at the end of the book are a great addition to the story as these will force the children to think about and process the story. Also, it helps the children to connect with the story and think about how they have and how they could in the future help others and be a good friend. This book would be a great resource to use in a classroom or small group to help encourage kindness and giving back to others.

Ward McNulty's family lived for years on Timuqua Island near Jacksonville, Florida. Ward's father led a citizen's revolt against the financial backers who wanted to buy out the residents, knock down their modest homes, and build an exclusive resort called the North Beach Project on the island. Sadly, Dan McNulty was killed as a result of the rebellion he led. Now Ward, broke and badly crippled from an accident, has been asked by his former love, newspaper reporter Carrie Hope, to join with her in writing a book about the North Beach Project, which was covered in the media when three of its five financial backers were killed. Ward wants no part of such a dangerous project, and he's not certain that he wants anything more to do with Carrie. However, there is still romance brewing between Ward and Carrie, and they join forces with Anton Gross and other friends from law enforcement to hunt down the elusive David Schoenhauer, the power behind North Beach Project and its international money-laundering schemes. But first, Ward and Carrie have to confront the highly lethal assassin, known only as "Culebra." Ward McNulty has one skill that sets them on the right path. Like his father, he can read into people's souls to judge if they are good or evil.

Gerard Webster has created a first-rate thriller with non-offensive Christian overtones that is highly well edited and well written. The plot unfolds believably, and suspense is maintained throughout the story. Characters, major and minor, are extremely well delineated and believable. "Culebra" and saintly Dona Rosa Aguilar are fascinating literary creations. The story's ending is brilliant and satisfying. The Soul Reader is a book that will appeal to readers everywhere who love first rate suspense.

Working as a researcher in the Vatican’s Secret Archives, Father Garbaldi finds an ancient papyrus hidden in a codex from Alexandria. He has no idea about the imminent events that will turn his world upside down, making him a fugitive from his own church. What he does know is that the information contained in the papyrus holds terrible repercussions for the Roman Catholic Church worldwide and for Western civilization as a whole. He decides, as a scientist, to have the papyrus independently validated. Members within the Vatican also have their hidden agendas, and those include protecting the position of the Church at all costs, even if it means eliminating potential threats. The Vatican Secret Service, The Entity, a secret body dating from the sixteenth century, briefs an assassin to remove obstacles and retrieve the document before it is published. Knowing only the name Tom Meecham, an FBI agent he read about in the newspaper, Father Garbaldi involves the FBI in this minefield of drama and high tension.

This is a must-read novel involving an international trail of investigation, historical cover-ups, some damning evidence about the Catholic Church (sensitive readers may not like!), and a whole lot of action guaranteed to make readers rethink Dan Brown for gripping drama. The author has also kept links with two interesting characters from previous novels: Thomas Meecham, FBI agent, and Mark Price, Department of Homeland Security. This keeps a familiar thread running through from previous novels ("Cry of Eagles" and "Towers of Darkness") and generates extra interest. The wealth of background research and information certainly adds to a story that spans a few thousand years and draws the reader back into centuries-old theological battles without overwhelming the plot. An interesting, compelling novel, which I recommend highly.

Into The Lions Heart by Beth Trissel is a historical romance novelette that is sure to delight the fancy of those who read this genre. The story revolves around three main characters: Captain Dalton Evans; his best friend, Thomas Archer; and Dalton's distant cousin, Sophia Devereux (aka Cecile), who is supposedly fleeing France in the middle of upheavals. Arriving in Dover to pick up his charge, with the sea’s rolling, the boat is spotted and he manages to get to her before she is thrown overboard. Rescuing the damsel in distress proves to be a chore in itself. As their feet once again hit dry land, there is something suspicious and right away Dalton and Tom both pick up on it. This could not be Sophia; it had to be an imposter, but that does not keep the hearts of both men from fluttering after they gaze upon her. Cecile Beaumont never intended to impersonate her mistress, but Sophia had other plans. Now can she carry on this masquerade, or will they discover the truth and send her back?

This is not the first of Beth Trissel's books that I have read, so I knew that it would be a great read. The author is very knowledgeable of historical eras, and this shows up in her books. The three main characters have an attitude about them that makes you like them instantly. I absolutely adored Dalton's aunt as she takes Cecile under her wing, thinking her to be Sophia. This is a book that can be read in an hour’s time and would make a great lunch hour read. One thing for certain, once you pick it up, it will be hard to put down as one has to find out if Cecile succeeds in her ploy reaching a surprising conclusion. If you have never read any of Beth Trissel’s books, this will be a great start and make you want to read more. I have always liked her style of writing and hope she does not change.

Only 22 pages into reading the book, author Brenda Bence already had me hooked. She challenged the reader to set a time for three minutes, and within that time frame, to write down everything you can think of that you CANNOT do with a paperclip. What a creative, stimulating thinking and writing exercise! Her point was that not long into the exercise you realize that you can do far more with a paperclip than you would have originally thought.

I like the title of Chapter 15, "Develop a Superiority Complex." In it, Bence points out that we already have assets that can help us build a terrific brand. I thought the cover graphic on the book was right-on-target for the book's title, Smarter Branding Without Breaking the Bank. It depicts a safe with door slightly ajar, and money poking out. Very clever.

In this book, the reader really can learn proven marketing strategies that they can put to use right away with little to no expense. The formatting, organization, development, and flow of the book were logical and easy to follow. Among the lessons you'll learn in this book include the chapters, "Frame Your Competition," "The Power of a Bull's Eye," and "Don't Just Sit There on Your Assets."

Anyone who is wanting to increase their market share, sell more products/services, or start their own business would benefit from reading this book. It's well-written, practical, and immediately implementable. I really enjoyed reading it.
