An intercontinental setting, a brilliant kid, and a world torn apart by greed and war, The Kid Who Beat Wall Street and Saved Africa by Ginger Heller begins with a prologue that follows lanky fourteen-year-old Hakim, saving a boy from kidnappers who turn kids into child soldiers and escaping from them, thanks to his ability to run like the wind and his great swimming skills. A powerful image that evokes the beautiful landscapes of Africa and the misery of the people. But then there is Marco in another world, a twelve-year-old boy who makes over $500,000 in gold mining stock from the comfort of his room. The story gets interesting when it involves pen-pals, and the misery lived by children in Africa because of war. Now Marco has a great plan to make life less miserable for his friends across the world. Follow this tale of adventure, courage, and compassion and discover the difference one caring kid can make in the world.

I’ve read many books for kids, but The Kid Who Beat Wall Street and Saved Africa has no competition. It’s a work apart, intelligently plotted and written to reflect our history and geography, as well as the injustices that children suffer in war-torn countries. Marco is a character that kids will adore, deeply human and compassionate. His sense of adventure is strong and it combines with his visionary spirit to create a character that even grown-ups will love. Ginger Heller’s novel is infused with a lot of wisdom and lessons that can change lives. The contrast in setting, the handling of themes, and the pacing are just few of the elements that will keep readers turning the pages. Deeply moving and hugely entertaining, a story that should be turned into a movie. I just loved it!

Flurry the teddy bear cub had already been through so much, so he couldn't understand why his mom had been so angry when she found him watching a pirate movie. The adventure was PG13, but tame compared to what he had already experienced in the flesh. The fact that he did something called 'pirating' sounded cool, but his mom had explained why it wasn't. But he still didn't get it. He had developed a taste, an addiction, to adventure and even as he settled down to sleep his mind raced with thoughts of adventure, and how he wished he could experience the thrill again. It's well known you should be careful what you wish for, because when he awoke he was still within the comfort of his own bed, but his bedroom was lost - instead he and his plush bear brothers found themselves adrift in the ocean. An ancient evil is rising, led by the nefarious Black Bear'd, the pirate, and it falls to Flurry and his crew to save the day.

Having read The Land of the Sourpie, which is book 2 in the Flurry the Bear series, I was quite eager to see what misadventures our little teddy bear cub encountered this time. I have to say this series just keeps getting better. As much as I enjoyed the second book, book five, The Rising Tide, is my favourite to date. There's action, adventure, pirates, sorcerers, manipulation, epic sea battles, and dark forces all brought together in a rich and vibrant child friendly world - what is there not to like? J.S. Skye writes in a stylistic manner well-tuned to his target audience, whilst ensuring that any adult would also be drawn into the adventure. I honestly can't wait until my son is a little older because these are, without a doubt, going on his reading list. This is a world of imagination, adventure, and hidden lessons, and any parent should be proud to add this book to their child's library. I found the text size, chapter length, and line spacing ideal for younger readers.

The Assassin's Pact: Flurry the Bear, Book 6 by J.S. Skye is a continuation of the story of Flurry and his family. Before I even begin talking about the novel and the story, let me just say that the covers of this whole series were simply amazing. I am in love with how detailed and descriptive they are. Now on to the story! The story follows Flurry and his friends. It has been two months since they have defeated the evil pirate and his crew. Now all they have to do is find a way back home.

However, finding their way back home is not as easy as they would like to think. It is high time that this furry family starts thinking like a team and think of a way out of this mess. The way back home is paved with danger and dangerous creatures that are intent on destroying them. They are attacked by a group of cats who seem to be working with Isangrim, the wolf. He is a strong villain who is after Flurry. Now, it is up to Flurry to find his way back home and do it without losing or injuring his brothers. Can he do it? Can they all get back home unscathed?

Intense, entertaining and filled to the brim with action, this sixth novel in the series brings the beloved characters back on an adventurous journey. I loved Flurry; his determination and his ability to take charge have improved. He is now more responsible in the face of danger and I loved him for it. Once again, the characters were given page space to grow and become stronger. The villains were believable and Flurry and his furry brothers were adorable. A brilliant story.

Readers, are you curious to learn what awaits you in this story of Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis by Carole P. Roman? I am! The opening scene finds the crew gasping when they see the giant ice mountain. The crew is shivering and they cannot see where they are heading because the sky is dark. Captain No Beard sees the North Star and they know they are heading north. Captain No Beard tells his crew he is planning to take something away from the north and bring it to their home. The crew does not want to do it as they think it is stealing. What is that Captain No Beard is planning to take back home with him?

This story tells young readers about the Aurora Borealis and I like the way the author knits science, imagination, and creativity together beautifully, making it very appealing and enchanting to readers. Like Carole P. Roman's other stories, this book has charming illustrations that bring the scenes and the characters alive. This series is a good one to have in schools and children’s libraries because of its educational and informative content. Parents can also keep it in their personal collection at home because it is easy for them to help their children understand a lot of useful concepts and good messages. This series is a real entertainer and with all its interesting characters and heartwarming stories and messages, it will definitely find a place in the hearts of all its readers.

The Bubble in Me by J. Alvarez is a quirky tale of friendship and teamwork. Tibby is a chubby tiger who befriends poor Benny, the bumblebee who can’t fly. Together they join forces with Hiccup the Hippo who has no friends because, whenever she speaks, she hiccups. The three friends accept each other for who they are, no matter what their flaws and, after Hiccup tells them a secret, they set off on a great adventure. Along the way they make new friends, they solve problems, and come together as one big happy family that may not be perfect to others but, to each other, they are valuable and gifted friends.

The Bubble in Me by J. Alvarez is a wonderful story for children, complete with pictures that help to bring more life to the story. This isn’t just a kids' adventure story; this is a lesson, not just for kids but for adults too, on friendship, insecurity, accepting people for who they are and not what society dictates they should be. It also teaches teamwork, an invaluable lesson for anyone. This is a highly entertaining, humorous tale about characters with very genuine issues to overcome. While children can enjoy an incredibly well-written adventure story, they can also learn how to deal with emotions, in particular jealousy, in a very creative way. Funny with serious undertones, plenty of quirky characters and a great story line, this is a delightful book for kids, and both children and adults can learn a few lessons along the way.

Franky the Finicky Flamingo by Wanda Luthman is a preschool picture book about Franky the Flamingo who tries many different foods to eat. But each time they are not right for him. As he watches the other birds and what they eat, he tries their diet out for himself, but his pink is beginning to fade. And those foods either make his tummy hurt or don’t go down so well. Finally, a wise owl tells Franky that he needs to eat special pink foods like shellfish and shrimp to keep his feathers nice and pink and, of course, healthy. Franky is grateful to the owl for helping him find the perfect food. As it turns out, Franky is really not finicky at all; he just requires special food that fits his personal diet. As he eats the right foods, his feathers turn beautiful once again.

This is an exceptionally cute story for toddlers and kids of the preschool age as well as an appropriate beginner reader book for early readers. I actually read this story to my three preschoolers and they were very interested in the story line. It kept them engaged and wanting to know more about Franky the Finicky Flamingo. This is a great picture book to teach young children about the different diets of various birds as well as entertain them with the sing-song rhyme of the story. Great job to Wanda Luthman for a super entertaining story and colorful illustrations. I loved the question at the end. What in the world am I going to drink?

Max, the Australian Shepherd dog, is adopted into a family with two children. Although he loves his boy and his girl, the master and mistress don’t seem to like him much. Never washed, never brushed, Max spends the next two years of his life pacing his small, barren yard and longing to play with his boy. His nights are fraught with the danger of raccoons while his days are lonely. When Max is hurt after defending himself against a vicious dog, the master takes him away. Max gets his first bath at the shelter, and eventually is taken into a home with a kind mistress, two other dogs, three cats and a pair of parakeets. As Max slowly regains his health and trust in humans, he learns that this loving home might be just another temporary stop in his life.

The Dog at the Gate: How a Throwaway Dog Becomes Special is a modern, canine version of Black Beauty that’s also reminiscent of Nop’s Trials and The Call of the Wild. This book is a gut-wrenching combination of sadness and triumph and you may want to keep the tissues handy. As with many books in this genre, The Dog at the Gate reveals the unjust and careless manner in which humans so often treat their animals. This novel focuses more on purposeful neglect and cruelty than that born of ignorance, while also hinting at the association that people who are cruel to animals tend to be cruel to each other too. Author Sunny Weber writes with a clean, uncomplicated style. Every chapter has a charming illustration at the beginning that highlights a scene from the following chapter. The Dog at the Gate is an addictive and emotional adventure that will appeal to readers of all ages. I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys books told from an animal’s point of view.

The Other Side of Freedom by Cynthia T Toney takes us back to 1925, pre-Depression Louisiana and the small town of Freedom. Salvatore is just thirteen, but this son of Italian immigrants is a hard-working farm boy, whose parents and uncle have struggled to make a good life for themselves in this rural area. Prohibition is in full swing in America and when Italian mobsters come to town and demand Sal’s father’s help in their plans to rob the Freedom bank, or they will hurt his family, Sal’s family finds themselves in a moral quandary. When the bank robbery goes awry, Sal is left with a secret that could destroy their entire lives and set their family on the run. This young man must weigh up the rights and wrongs of the situation and make a decision that he and the rest of his family can live with. Sal is just discovering his feelings and attraction to his best friend, Antonina, and whatever decisions he and the family make are almost certain to affect the relationship. This is indeed a moral dilemma.

I found The Other Side of Freedom to be a truly compelling coming-of-age story. The setting was beautifully described by Cynthia T Toney and one felt oneself being drawn back to the era of gangsters, the G-Men, and bootlegging across the south. The feel of the story was authentic and the action fast and furious. I particularly found it interesting to compare the experience faced by the Italian and Sicilian immigrants of the 19th and early 20th centuries to those of the immigrants of today. They faced discrimination and generalisation – they are Sicilians, therefore they must be gangsters and criminals, where today we see they are Arabs, therefore they must be terrorists. I also thought it interesting that Sal found some sympathy and empathy with his black friend, Hiram, in that the prejudices they both faced were somewhat similar. I particularly liked the fact that Toney offered some questions at the end of the book for younger readers to consider and reflect on the story. This is an excellent children’s story that poses some interesting moral dilemmas for young readers to ponder.

The Maker by D.F. Anderson is the enchanting story about Nate, a teenage boy, who loves to draw. His parents have separated and his mom has a new boyfriend. With all the turmoil in his life, his grades in school are slipping, so his mother takes away all his drawing supplies until his marks go up. Meanwhile, his father has disappeared out of his life, but someone sends him a package with a mysterious note inside. Before he can figure out what the message means, two strange, tiny creatures steal the contents of the parcel. Intent on getting his property back, he chases after them, which leads him on a journey that changes his entire life.

I love the world D.F. Anderson has built in The Maker. The characters are unique and fantastic, especially Coral, Nate’s new friend. This story is written with beauty and skill. Every description vividly paints an exciting universe filled with danger, mystery, and adventure. Even though it does fall back on the ‘chosen one, special boy’ trope, the story is so well done that this did not take away from the joy of reading it. The mixture of nature science and the fantasy of magic is refreshing and well done. I truly appreciate the work that has gone into the world-building in The Maker. D.F. Anderson has a great imagination and does a wonderful job sharing it with his readers. I would recommend this story to anyone who wants to lose themselves in a terrific adventure.

The ABC Animal Picnic by Janina Rossiter is an educational tool to introduce children not only to the alphabet, but it also helps in enhancing their vocabulary. The animal picnic also helps children understand that an alphabet can have different sounds and the story will fascinate them with the creativity and imagination of the author. Every page is fun to read and children will love repeating the words, the alliteration, and the sounds. The author’s imagination is on full display when readers flip through the pages and discover a lot of new things while learning the alphabet.

I like the way the author makes learning the alphabet and new words fun and interactive. What makes it unique is the manner in which the author has introduced the alphabet to readers, which is not what one gets to see usually. It is a perfect book for parents if they have small kids at home who are going to start school, because it makes learning easy, fun, and interesting. It is a good book for teachers and educators to introduce the alphabet and new words to children in classrooms, and parents and grandparents can read it out to their children and grandchildren at bedtime.

It is a great book with some colorful and excellent illustrations that are eye-catching. Informative and educational books like this are always good for child readers as it helps them not only learn new things, but will also make them more creative and imaginative. It is definitely a must-have in every school and children's libraries, and in homes.
