Children - Grade K-3rd

Jenny L Cote is an extremely talented author. The Ark, the Reed & the Fire Cloud is sure to be a favorite of your child. The plot follows Max, a Scottish terrier, and Liz, a feline, as they lead other various animals to Noah’s Ark. Cote never allows her tale to be boring. She uses humor, adventure, danger, twists, and turns throughout the plot.
The Ark, the Reed & the Fire Cloud will make a great read aloud to your children or grandchildren. Some children will even want to read it to themselves, although 437 pages may be a bit daunting to most young children. It is easy to recommend this book to parents and grandparents.

Fiction - Suspense

As I read this book I kept picturing a cross between Mike Connors as Mannix and Raymond Burr as Perry Mason. Grant you I know Mannix was a PI and not a lawyer yet he came to my mind and I know that Perry Mason was never a bumbler but he always saved his client by finding the real culprit.
Mac and Hank’s new client was Senator Victoria Serling. As they were discussing the case the Senator and Mac were hit by a car. In the midst of pursuit Hank had a car accident. All three ended up in the hospital. There is more to this mystery than meets the eye.
The plot for this book could have been ripped from the headlines. Political scandal, campaign smears, and attempted murder. What more could a diehard legal thriller fan want? In the tradition of our favorite old time TV lawyers, Hank Fisher is known for solving his cases in court. Mike Langan has character development down to a fine art. His writing style is flamboyant and over the top, which makes for exciting reading. Langan’s expertise adds to the legitimacy of this novel. This is the beginning of a new series; I suspect Hank Fisher to be around for a long time.

I Stole The Turtle and The Octave Rule
George Norton

Christian - Devotion/Study

George Norton had me laughing from the first page. He begins his book by telling about his mother and grandmother giving him a bath. He shares the joy of changing his son's diaper and getting hit in the face with a stream of urine. Norton continues telling stories on himself. How he put a broom handle in a girl's mouth (strange). The story of playing doctor was hilarious.
Like George, I grew up in a much more innocent time. Parents were not afraid to “drop us off” somewhere. We played on the railroad tracks. Boys, who I will not mention by name, peed out the upstairs window and killed all their mother’s flowers.
George is right. Things certainly have changed. We need back ground checks to keep the nursery at church or to work with any children. I’m not disagreeing with the need; I’m just saddened by it.
George speaks with profound wisdom. He throws in scripture at just the right spots. He shares the meaning of happiness and true joy.
I Stole the Turtle and The Octave Rule is an odd title for a book. It grabbed my attention. I Stole the Turtle and The Octave Rule will make you laugh a lot and ponder a lot. Well done, Mr. Norton.

If You Want A Harvest, You Have to be Willing to Cultivate the Soil
Dr. T. Darnell Saunders

Christian - Living

This book is based on 1 Cor. 3:6. Saunders uses the example of an apple tree to describe our lives as Christians. He discusses the stages a Christian goes through, dormancy, silver tip, green tip, half inch green, tight cluster, pink, full blossom, petal fall, and fruit set.
Saunders’s writes in a simple easy to understand style. He explains the gospel in a unique manner. I will never look at an apple tree the same. The gist of his message is nurturing, cultivating others and ourselves. Too many believe that you can have your name on the role of a church, and you are a Christian. Others believe that showing up at church on holidays makes them a Christian. Still others believe an hour once a week, and they have done their part. Saunders’ gets to the true meat of the gospel, the word Christian is an action verb. Just as a plant’s roots must have water, good soil, fertilize, and room to grow, so does a believer. We must grow in Christ; we must mature in our faith. Part of this cultivating is purity, holiness, and, sacrifice, Saunders’ points out that man was created as a threefold being, a body, soul, and mind.
My favorite part of this book is the “treasure map to the hidden treasures of faith.” Always beware of opportunities to serve God. Always acknowledge the presence and anointing of God. Do not be overwhelmed with circumstances. I will not list all of them, you need to purchase the book to discover the other truths inside the covers. Saunders discusses the story of Jacob, breaking it down into easy to understand sections.
I am an adult Sunday School teacher. I can see myself incorporating much of this into a lesson, especially the story of Jacob. This small book will bless many.

Secret of The Sands

Fiction - Mystery - General

The setting is both ancient and modern Egypt.
Authors Rai Aren and Travius E. bring the ancient past to life. Secret of The Sands is a fast paced adventure reminding me of The Indiana Jones Series. The authors successfully weave the past and present together playing out two stories at once. In the past, we watch the story of King Traeus and Queen Axiana unfolds. There is strife in Traeus’ kingdom. He builds a secret chamber under the Sphinx to hide a powerful machine that he hopes will help his people.
In the present Archeology students, Mitch and Alex discover a box hidden in a secret chamber under the Sphinx. The box contains two scrolls and a metal unknown to humankind but predating the iron age. They more they learn the more they question.
This is my kind of book. Please, please make a continuing series and a movie! The authors are extremely talented. I cannot praise this book enough. Fast paced, page turner, character development, fascinating plot….what more could I ask for..

The 6th Seal
J.M. Emanuel

2009 Silver Medal
Kindle Edition

Fiction - Thriller - General

J.M. Emanuel's look at the future follows three believers as they resist the anti-Christ; who is leading a new world order. In this version of end days, the elect are not raptured out before the tribulation. Daniel, Revelations, Isaiah, Malachi, etc are all prophetic books of the Bible. They warn us of what is to come in the last days. J.M. Emanuel shares with readers his vision of what the future may hold.
Many authors have recently attempted to share a contemporary account of the future. The Left Behind Series is one such attempt. While I enjoyed that series, I felt they lost focus toward the end of the work. The 6th Seal is a much darker look at the future. While Emanuel follows Biblical prophecy, he does with a different perspective than most authors. Emanuel's former military expertise shines through in this version of Armageddon.
There are three views (that I know of) regarding the rapture. 1. Pre....The Left Behind Series focuses on this theory. 2. Post 3. Mid...this is the theory. The 6th Seal is based on. I do not know which theory is correct. I hope it is Pre. But I suspect from my studies it will be Mid. Regardless of your belief, this is a great fictional novel with bits of truth built in.

Non-Fiction - Self Help

When our life is out of balance, we are unsure of what to do next, where to turn, and how to continue. We often feel as though we are on the edge of a cliff and we could easily for off. Too often, we let one aspect of our life take over our life. Work, relationships, sexuality, spirituality all have a place in our life but cannot be the total of our life. The Edge encourages readers to evaluate their life and assists in finding balance.
TD Kruser offers frank discussion of life altering influences. He does not stop with helping readers find balance he explains why we need balance. He uses his own experiences as examples. He also encourages listening to others regardless of differences. Kruser shares poems and quotes to strengthen his point of view. I’ve read a lot of self-help books. This is one of the best.

Sir Licksalot & The Maverick Fools

Children - Grade K-3rd

I love anything that will catch a child's interest and get them to read. Books like Sir Licksalot & The Maverick Fools captures a child's interest and stirs their imagination. D.L. Carroll opens the opportunity for dialogue on topics that touch today's youth, including bullies and loneliness. The illustrations by Teri Cuneo add much to the story line.
Blaze and his parents have moved from a condo in the city where Blaze had lots of friends to a beach house where he did not know anyone. Blaze was very lonely. His parents allowed him to adopt a dog from the Humane Society. He named the dog Sir Licksalot. The other kids in the neighborhood are bullies. When Sir Licksalot and some neighborhood girls are missing, Blaze and the other boys must join forces to find them. They face a stone lion, a cave, and sharks to solve the mystery.
Sir Licksalot & The Maverick Fools is appropriate for third, fourth, and fifth graders. I think it might also be used in a middle school Reading Coach Programs as a high interest/low level reader.
