Markings in the Cave

Poetry - Love/Romance
Markings in the Cave, a brilliant collection of short poems by Paul Tait, is a profoundly personal selection of one man’s musings – perhaps unheard by the silently attentive universe that he addresses. A theme emerges from these plaintive ruminations of the soul – an unusual, contrapuntal theme told in both harmonic and discordant tones – that seems to stress a tenuous but ever-present tension between the suffering in the world and the hope embedded in religion, with a frequent interjection and nod to the comforting distortion of personal spirituality.
These poems are concise and often highly structured, but like a waterfall over boulders they always flow. The verse often ranges from the subliminal to the sublime, evoking from the wreckage of an imperfect world the possibility of hope and sacred redemption, though always with a shred of doubt. Whether pondering the elusive state of marriage or the illusive promises of death, the poetry resonates with both raw and ethereal truths that are almost fully realized, but fortunately not quite.
Paul Tait has created from his musings in Markings in the Cave a perfect and exquisite minor gem on which to gaze and from which to reflect on one’s own fallible existence in this world. Have we been abandoned to our lowly selves by our Creator, leaving us with the question asked in I Need the Moon to Renew my Eyes: Or are all God’s given gifts/Interminable rifts/With the sovereignty of man? Must we despair, as offered in The Haunted Face of the Soul You Deserted: You are not prepared – you cannot divert it/The haunted face of the soul you deserted. Must we proclaim as one man does in Empty Net: Still, I can’t help needing/What I haven’t got.
The poet is not afraid to include a subtle rhyme or two to make his poetry sing, but every rhyme is situated perfectly within the rhythm of its verse, and these poems would be much the less without them. I feel very fortunate to have chanced upon this poetry.

Poetry - Love/Romance
Tracy A. Seiden’s Stardust and Fire: Tales of a Hopeful Romantic comprises a collection of seventy-one poems about the many varying aspects of heterosexual love, passion, desire, attraction and romance. The first of the short pieces, "Childhood Forever," comes close to conventional rhyming poetry, but it is the only one that does. It serves almost as an introduction to the rest, which encompass the thoughts, dreams and longings of women of any age. These are all free verse: some divided into sections and others that Ms Seiden simply allows to flow.
Stardust and Fire: Tales of a Hopeful Romantic is a title that captured my imagination before I opened the book and read a single word. Tracy A. Seiden held my attention; every poem led me on to the next. “Dance” is so incredibly expressive it truly does dance, as do all the pieces involving dancing. In Divine Love, the woman encourages her man to be protective, and “fuels him to be the man he was meant to be.” "Peace of the Soul" echoes that theme. "Stardust" is thirty-eight flowing words, clever and utterly different. "Fire," the other title word, is best expressed in "Warrior on Fire." There is eroticism too in "Heaven’s Door," "Black Magic Symphony," and "Did He Feel It."
The surprise was "Dark Wings Broken." My personal favourite is "Don’t," a clever contradiction, or is it "A Winter’s Queen," or "Reflections" and “life is a cycle, never ending”? The contention for a favourite is powerful in Stardust and Fire, and Ms Seiden expresses herself as a “hopeful romantic” in every poem.

Poetry - Love/Romance
Angelica's Box: A Poetically Sober Psychotic Break (Pizzle's Trilogy of Insanity) by Greatest Poet Alive is a book of poetry. This was a first for me as I normally do not read poetry books, but I wanted to try this. The poetry varies in that some poems are just a line or two and others are much longer. There were a lot of poems I could relate to and I found the writing to be beautiful. I found the humor to be very interesting and witty. Just after the Epilogue there was a little line that made me laugh a lot.
Angelica's Box: A Poetically Sober Psychotic Break (Pizzle's Trilogy of Insanity) by Greatest Poet Alive brings humor in a way I did not think was possible with poems. A few small drawbacks include the lack of capital letters at the start of some sentences and the amount of blank space on a lot of pages that I feel could have been filled with illustrations or maybe placing two smaller poems on the pages together. However, I really enjoyed the majority of the poems and it was a very fast read. I was able to fly through it in one sitting pretty quickly. I enjoyed the writing and it kept me interested throughout. I highly recommend this to lovers of poetry and people just starting to read poetry.

Strings of Milo

Poetry - Love/Romance
Strings of Milo by Estelle Roher is a desperate and binding romance written in poetry instead of prose. It's full of the darkness and joy that real romance can bring to a person's life. Poetry really is unique in its ability to create a different impression on every reader. While I might have gotten the sense of desperation involved in love, that may have been entirely reflected from my own perspective of romance, brought out by Estelle Roher's vision and feel for the written word. Another reader could find a different meaning entirely, and I believe it's that ambiguity which is poetry's greatest strength, particularly in this case where it deals with emotions intrinsic to the very core of being human.
The writing style was interesting, and instead of sticking to one sort of poetry, you see the author explore her strengths and weaknesses as she moves from free verse to rhyming patterns. An interesting experience that allows you to explore what style you like the best in terms of poetic expression. Strings of Milo is a beautiful read. Even if you don't like poetry, I'd say give this one a shot. It's relatively short if you don't feel like reading a full 100 pages of poems, and yet it also speaks through poetry in an easily tangible way. You understand exactly what Estelle is trying to both spell out and imply by her writings. This allows for an easy grasp of the poems as well as an ease of reading.

Poetry - Love/Romance
Sheila is a beautiful woman and our protagonist in The Warmest Winter by James Gordon is absolutely enthralled by and in love with her. But so is someone else: her husband. This is the tale of a man who knows his love is forbidden and frowned upon, but can't contain the overwhelming desire that is swelling in his heart. Is he doing the wrong thing in loving her? Loving a woman who is married to someone else? Or has he found the right person who is with the wrong one at the moment? Is there any chance for them to be together or is he just a little too late?
This was a beautiful, flowing piece to read and I absolutely fell in love with the inner turmoil that our hero is enduring. What is it like to be so thoroughly in love with someone and know that if the world has its way you can never be with them? The writer, James Gordon, is very talented at imagery and eliciting emotions from readers in The Warmest Winter. I'd love to see what he could do in the future with more training and time spent at his craft. He could use a good editor and cover designer, but I'll definitely be around for all of his future works. This was an easy read with a difficult message and I think people of various age groups, ethnicities, and backgrounds could enjoy the way his writing effortlessly conveys the feelings behind the words. Bravo!

Love is something that everyone wants to find but not everyone can. It’s something that people wonder about and it’s something that this book of poems is about. There are so many different stages to love. There’s the stage where you are wondering whether you’ll find the one and the stage where you have found the one and don’t know what to do next. There’s also stages where you feel betrayed by the individual and where you realize what you’ve lost after the fact. These poems will draw you in and have you thinking about every love and loss you’ve ever experienced. You will feel the heights and the lows all over again as you read through Love Poems: Are You the One? by Steve Ryan.
I was amazed by the way I felt reading these poems. The emotions that they evoke are strong and they make you relive everything you’ve ever felt about your first love and your last love and every one in between. You will not feel the same after you’ve finished this book of poems and you’ll want to keep reading. I was so drawn in that I kept reading one poem after another. I would stop and think about each poem and then move on to the next. It was something that I greatly enjoyed and I know that I will return to some of these poems again and again. Love Poems: Are You the One? by Steve Ryan is definitely a book that I won’t forget.

Poetry - Love/Romance
A Nashville Woman and Other Sorrows: Music City Poems contains a set list of poems that at first are about a woman, but end up being about Nashville itself -- not the glitzy Hollywood version, but the real, soul-crushing toil of the Music City. Not so much dark as filled with melancholy, these poems ring true, as though author Dan Jewel has first-hand experience with the hope and heartbreak of being a working, or non-working, musician/songwriter. Like a country song, each poem tells a story or exposes the inside of a moment in life. This is poetry, but accessible. An excerpt from "The Academic Poet" explains it best:
"But I damn sure won't be using shells of obscurity,
Or rhetorical ambiguity,
Or any other elitist hermetic techniques
To alienate any reader who would pay me the honor
Of reading what I write.
Poetry is a lot less than that,
And much more."
I read these poems straight through like a novel, and then read my favorites again. In just a few lines or a phrase, each entry in A Nashville Woman and Other Sorrows: Music City Poems made me feel a part of the moment and full of yearning. These snippets of life, feelings, moments, scenes, and snapshots read to me like an epic song put together with the best book openings and chapter closings from every great novel never yet written. Dan Jewel's poems are arguably sad, each in some way dealing with being worn down and burned out from striving, never quite fulfilled. But they are also solid and purposeful, with an underlying point that the people who experience burn-out are the ones who were first on fire.

Poetry - Love/Romance
Cometh The Two was written by Jon Messenger. The book was created in a general poetry genre. The design and layout suits the story well. It is a short story in poetry with a topic of knights-soldiers. The book has a great adventure story within its pages, filled with love, sadness, anger, bitterness, delight, and determination.
This tale of a knight is written in a way often not spoken anymore, that of poetry. The plot is that of greatness, relating to old stories of knights and their maidens. A young boy falls in love with a girl of an upper status. Having nothing to offer, he tells her father he loves her, but just as her father expects his proposal to date his daughter, the young boy is shipped off to learn the art of knighthood. During this time he will overcome many obstacles thrown at him to deter him from his beloved.
Jon Messenger's Cometh The Two is a very intriguing, interesting story. The story has hints of warriors past and present, weapons of past and present, but a love that time can never alter. I loved the story and the way it was written. Putting it into a column of 4 stanzas going down the pages, makes it seem as if it is a running scroll from the time of the knights. The references in the present war today made the story feel very personable and relatable, as if it was an actual love story. A great read.

Poetry - Love/Romance
Self-proclaimed “Greatest Poet Alive” (GPA) returns with a new collection of poetry entitled Revenge of the Orgasm: An Erotic Autobiography. Certainly not shy, and obviously confident, if not slightly arrogant, GPA holds nothing back in his passionate chapbook of poetry. This is not your typically shy, flowery love poetry. These are raw and straightforward descriptions of romantic encounters. These are poems of tumbled sheets, frenzied kisses, heat, breathless whispers, and the secret dances that lovers perform. These are poems designed to have you yearning for the arms of your own lover.
GPA’s poetry is fun and entertaining. The poems are short and quick to read, but have much to say. The author’s openness and honesty is also something to be admired. And, though the title Revenge of the Orgasm: An Erotic Autobiography might suggest otherwise, the poems are not gratuitously graphic in their sexuality and women are treated with respect, if not held in admiration.
My only concern with this collection is that as an avid fan and scholar of poetry, I expect very rigid standards from a poet proclaiming themselves as the “Greatest Poet Alive”. While the poems in this book are quite enjoyable, I think the poet still has some work to do before labeling himself the “Greatest”. I have no complaints with the poet’s word usage or storytelling abilities, but the flow and format of the poems could be tightened. Special attention needs to be used on line breaks in order to create tension and poignancy. However, I still urge fans of romantic poetry to consider reading this book. It is quite good and delivers the passion and steaminess that it suggests. Next time you are in the mood for romance, pick up GPA’s collection. I think it will please you.

Poetry - Love/Romance
"Monsters Under My Bed" is a poetry book written by Tamara Helene Arrington specially dedicated to her son, Connor Bryant Arrington. This is Arrington’s second poetry book after "Tattooed". This poetry collection once again shows why Arrington’s skill as a poet should be recognized. This poetry book doesn’t have the stylish, deep or even flowery verse as in others that I have read before, but the messages and feelings conveyed through Arrington’s straightforward style are just as powerful if not more. The verse is rhythmic, funny, soothing, and inspirational. I’m also very impressed with the book cover and the illustrations that go with the poems; they are absolutely beautiful and complement the book very well. My favorites are many. The first two are ‘Superwoman’ and ‘Hot Mess’ – wives and mothers will really connect with these poems. And ‘Black Widow’ is just plain sexy and alluring. ‘Box of Fruit Loops’ just makes me smile; I never thought that a poet would create poetry about fruit loops, its sugary content and artificial flavor, but there it is in the book.
"Monsters Under My Bed" is a perfect testimony or better yet, an incredibly open and honest look, at the problems as well as challenges each woman faces in her roles as a wife and mother. Poetry is not for everyone, but any reader, irrespective of of their favorite genre, can read and enjoy this book. It is simply inspiring, motivating, and touching.
