Non-Fiction - Self Help
Show Up For Yourself: A Guide to Inner Growth and Awareness by Janet Philbin is an uplifting and encouraging book that can be used as a guide for inner awareness, growth, and becoming as you step forward to show up as you. The framework in the book tells how you can show up each and every day and bring joy, balance, and peace into your life. The healing process is a journey and Janet makes you understand how healing is a spiral that expands upward and round, which makes you touch the same points multiple times. The book will help heal your inner child and give you a new perspective on how to look at your pain and heal so that the true self will emerge. This is a fascinating trip into the self, into the heart, to look at the parts that need love, compassion, and healing, and to learn to give yourself what you give others easily.
Janet Philbin shares multiple cases and stories for you to connect better with her words, and there is also a mention of meditation, chakras, and the importance of both Western psychology and Eastern philosophy when it comes to healing. You will understand what healing is, how the inner child develops, the false self, ego, and the steps to heal the pain of your inner child so that you can finally become the light you are meant to be. The step-by-step guide to healing helps to prioritize and give attention to areas that require love and healing. Show Up For Yourself will help you to reconnect with your true self and become the captain of your ship. I personally believe all relationships are transitory and the most important relationship you can have is with your own self. I like the manner in which the author stresses that topic and helps you understand the importance of being connected with you, first and foremost. The book has gifts, lessons, the soul's yearning to grow and understand the depths of pain and celebrate the joy. The author's transformative journey is indeed an inspiration and encouragement to heal the pain of the past so the present and future are full of emotional wholeness.

Non-Fiction - Self Help
Within the first few paragraphs of The Breakthrough in Two Acts by Fredric C. Hartman, Ph.D., one breathes a very deep sigh of appreciation for something truly fresh and intelligent, startled by the clear recognition that, “Hey, I’m in the presence of something brisk and new, something that explains with crystal clarity this current life I live, something, even more importantly, that I can actually use to live it better." Some of his earliest words explain the basic parameters defining this recognition: “Our brain keeps believing danger is everywhere, as it was neurologically designed to do.” “But shouldn’t a sturdy, stable awareness be as basic to civilized life as shelter, or clothing?”
It might seem axiomatic that an academic subject written about by an accomplished academic would sound, well, academic. However, The Breakthrough in Two Acts, a remarkable evaluation, assessment, and practical revelation of human consciousness and our intimate connection with it, reads more like Fredric C. Hartman is a poet, not a doctor, or a mighty wise guru sitting alone atop a hill. That is the pleasure one feels while reading: not like he is listening to a lecture, but like he has wandered into a private conversation revealing the big secret behind our existence. Almost like someone finally unearthed that rumored-to-exist-but-must-not-be-seen instruction booklet. If all of this seems a bit light-hearted for such a serious subject, it is because the effect of Dr. Hartman’s book is to make one feel enlightened, and yes, a bit more light-hearted. But, in a most down-to-earth and useful way. And finally, I will say something I have never said before: Everyone needs to read this book. Everyone should read this book.

The Warrior's Meditation: The Best-Kept Secret in Self-Improvement, Cognitive Enhancement, and Stress Relief, Taught by a Master of Four Samurai Arts (Total Embodiment Method TEM) by Richard L Haight is a relatively straightforward book about meditation. The author starts with meditation principles and guides the reader on where they should start in their practice. The book teaches readers the importance of your five senses and how to become more self-aware of them. Once learning the background of meditation and its important tenets, the author moves on to teaching readers how to make lifestyle adjustments to make meditation a habit. Like any other task, it should be regularly practiced to receive the maximum benefit.
The Warrior's Meditation by Richard L Haight was a great beginner’s book on meditation. I have read quite a few books on mediation and am working on practicing so it was another introduction into a different aspect of meditation I was previously unaware of – the total embodiment method (TEM). It was also exceptionally useful in providing specifics of meditation such as how long to do it, positioning, and exercises. Of course, any beginner is sure to have questions and the book even does a question-and-answer section to help readers. For those who don’t know where to start, it certainly provides clarity. I also appreciated that the author provided their own experiences as it was beneficial to see that they also practice what they are trying to teach. Those wanting to get into meditation should take a look at this book before starting.

Practice Makes PURPOSE: Six Spiritual Practices that Will Change Your Life and Transform Your Community by C. Paul Schroeder proposes a path that helps readers to be more human, to unlock the floodgates of joy and happiness and create a life of meaning. This author understands what it takes to create a life that stands out and that has more impact. He writes insightfully about what is intrinsically linked to the human essence like the power of compassion (with a wonderful definition: seeing through another's eyes), heartfelt listening, intentionally creating spaces for others to evolve through the subtle art of hospitality, participating, and a lot more. He reminds me a lot of the writings of Henri Nouwen, especially when he talks about things that are linked to our humanity.
What makes this book unique is the author’s ability to understand the deepest yearnings of the human heart. Proposing practical steps to develop qualities and values that transform a person from within is one of the things that make the writing invaluable and a tool for everyone. I enjoyed when he talks about setting boundaries by developing the art of gracefully saying “no”. Practice Makes PURPOSE: Six Spiritual Practices that Will Change Your Life and Transform Your Community is packed with wisdom for everyday life and tools that will allow readers to easily connect with others and their community and to create the positive influences that will have a great impact on the lives of others. Written in a style that is easy to understand and language that is fluid, this book is like an intimate conversation with the author, a conversation about some of the things that really matter and that we often take for granted. C. Paul Schroeder’s self-help book is required reading for anyone who wants to grow, meaningfully connect with others, and positively impact lives. A highly recommended read.
