What I've Learned

Non-Fiction - Humor/Comedy
What I’ve Learned: An Encyclopedia of Perpetual Bullshit by Christopher T. Heist is a humorous collection of life experiences, editorials, and essays on various topics. With his blatant honesty, Heist not only takes and applies a razor sharp wit to the typical memoir, but also organizes it into easy to digest segments. He tackles subjects from abortion to video games, where Heist tells it like it is, taking no prisoners and being completely unapologetic about any of it.
When I first started to read What I’ve Learned: An Encyclopedia of Perpetual Bullshit by Christopher T. Heist, I was surprised in the most pleasant way possible. This memoir is such an innovative and interactive text, which with masterful wordsmithing and strategy could possibly reinvent the genre. Instead of the author directing readers on their journeys and providing reflection, Heist surrenders his book to readers, allowing them to determine what topics appeal to them. Heist’s voice is one of the freshest and most approachable that I’ve read in a long time. It’s strong, acidic, dark, and at times comforting, much like the perfect morning coffee blend. He’s also got an older brother charm, which he uses to delightfully corrupt his readers with his knowledge. While some writers shy away from many topics, Christopher is right there, in the depths of it, offering his views on each topic with the tenacity and frankness that I’ve grown to appreciate.

I'd Rather Wear Pajamas is a humorous memoir by Chelsea Walker Flagg chronicling her life as she leads the reader through her journey of self discovery where she finds out her own definition of what it means to be a strong woman. Dedicated to her three young daughters, I'd Rather Wear Pajamas is a lighthearted, engaging read that feels as though the reader is talking (and laughing) with a good friend. Beginning in Colorado when Chelsea was young child, a girl inspired by her own mother's strength and wanting to emulate it, I'd Rather Wear Pajamas allows the reader to follow Chelsea as she grows up, tripping along on a few hilarious mishaps, some awesome adventures, and a touching story of home birth.
I had a lot of fun reading I'd Rather Wear Pajamas by Chelsea Walker Flagg. With her memoir, the author manages to balance her writing with just the right amounts of personal touch, soul searching, and effervescence to make for a really enjoyable read. It is a book that can easily be read in one sitting and the workout you'll get from laughing is an added bonus. Chelsea has a way of crafting scenes that pull the reader in and have you living in each crazy, often hilarious, and sometimes very moving moments. Any parent of young kids should be able to relate to I'd Rather Wear Pajamas by Chelsea Walker Flagg. Just Make Me A Sammich
Absurd Observations from a Wild Mind

Non-Fiction - Humor/Comedy
Just Make Me A Sammich: Absurd Observations From a Wild Mind is by Don Ake. Don has been writing humor columns and blogs since the age of 11. He does it to make other people smile or laugh in a time when the world is so serious and scary. With a large number of loyal followers, Don has compiled some of his most well received blogs and created this book. The title is a play on male-female relationships where men believe they are dominant and their female counterparts should be submissive, leading to the man’s demand of ‘Just make me a sammich!’ which, in turn, leads to the woman shouting her response of ‘Get off your butt and make your own sammich!’ What the woman fails to realize is that he only demands the sandwich in the first place because he loves and treasures her so much. Learn about the SHE rule, hanger pains, black market butts, the advantage of boxer briefs, and much, much more.
There really is no way to describe Don Ake’s literary masterpiece of laughs without my husband oddly watching me maw like a donkey followed by unladylike gasps for air and a few snorts in between. Just Make Me A Sammich is possibly the funniest book I have ever read. While it is true that some people will go out of their way to take offence at every politically incorrect word written in these pages, those who really do need a good laugh would benefit from reading the riotous wit which is cleverly presented so as (trying hard) not to offend. Men’s demands on women because they love us so much and women’s scathing responses because they want their men strong – I am still scratching my head as to why ‘sammiches’ determine one’s sexual attainment for the evening, and even considered hiding the bread from my husband while reading Don Ake’s words of wisdom. After reading Don Ake’s book, I can honestly say that dinner conversation at my house will never be the same again. I thoroughly enjoyed each chapter and recommend this book to mature readers who have pondered why women think you should be able to read their minds, while men insist that they are not male chauvinist pigs.

Abby's Road, the Long and Winding Road to Adoption: And how Facebook, Aquaman and Theodore Roosevelt Helped by Michael Curry is much more than just a book with a long and quirky title. The story follows the journey of the author Michael and his wife Esther as they undergo infertility treatments and ultimately adoption in their endearing quest to become parents. Curry is refreshingly honest, descriptive and raw when describing this roller coaster of a time in his family’s life. As you can tell by the book’s title, Curry also has a sense of humor, which he demonstrates throughout the story (so many fun geek and pop culture mentions in this book). The quest to bring Abby home is an endearing and enlightening read to say the least.
Anyone going through infertility, difficulties conceiving or the adoption process will find a kindred spirit in author Michael Curry. And even those who have zero issues adding to their family will find this book informative regarding the real life struggles of other parents. The POV of a male will probably appeal to readers who are expectant or struggling fathers-to-be and I found the light-hearted tone throughout the book enjoyable. I applaud the author for revealing to readers not only the happy times but also the dark and heartbreaking moments that he and his wife endured. The author’s use of quoting his and his wife’s Facebook posts throughout the story was an accurate reflection of the current digital age and added a realistic tone to the book. Highly recommended!

Non-Fiction - Humor/Comedy
Ms. Cheevious in Hollywood by Lisa Jey Davis is the memoir of a newly divorced mom and her attempts at making it in Hollywood. It chronicles her shock in finding out that she is an MILF, surprise when her first son wants to move out to his friend’s family, joy at getting hired as a marketing assistant, her putting weight control efforts on a war footing to present a beautiful appearance, and her escapades in nightclubs. How she happened to realize her erotic talents and their value, and the way these led to a changed outlook on life is presented in these pages. In addition, the book also contains her advice, like safety practices for those attempting online dating, and tips to single moms, making it a fascinating manual of contemporary interest.
In Ms. Cheevious in Hollywood by Lisa Jey Davis, there in no holding back. While rubbing shoulders with some of the best names of Hollywood, hobnobbing with the stars of music and entertainment, or when implants are mixed up while she undergoes a boob job, there is no dearth of events and experiences - laughable, titillating and also memorable. A page turner, this book has all the elements to keep us as engrossed as if reading a thriller; it provides ample advice, especially to those who need it the most. Her motto, she says in the book is: “Nothing is gained without our own determination, diligence, focus, personal responsibility and perseverance!”

Non-Fiction - Humor/Comedy
As a woman, I've certainly wondered at the psychology behind the mind of a man going through a mid-life crisis. Midmen: The Modern Man's Guide to Midlife Crisis is exactly what it says it is...the hard and dirty truth on what happens to a dude once the swagger and vitality of youth say "Buh-bye!".
Author Steve Ochs GED is hilarity incarnate. His stories and recollections were laugh out loud hilarious and I had trouble with my boss because they forced many a giggle out of me while illicitly reading Midmen at work. The writing was a mix of cynical, sarcastic, humorous, and vulgar...and I have to say I enjoyed every minute of it. While there were a few things that had my ears burning, for the most part I found myself laughing at what the author wrote about and the writing style definitely made the book read super quickly. The writing is so personal, it's like you're talking to a buddy while going out for a beer. Aside from being wildly entertaining, Midmen is packed with facts, data, and observations that really make sense and actually could...god-forbid...help someone as they move through the midlife crisis kind of stage in life.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, despite being younger and the other sex than its target audience. I'd say that Steve Ochs knows what he's talking about and just the right way to phrase it...none too delicately might I add! Definitely give this one a read if you want to laugh, and maybe learn something too.

You will find yourself giggling through some of life's most precarious moments in Mary Huckstep’s, Mary, Mary Quite: On Raising Children (and other mind altering substances). This inspirational book is beyond cute. It is packed full of silly descriptions, which accurately, yet comically describe real life situations and identities, and laugh out loud anecdotes. Laughter is truly good medicine for the soul, so do yourself a favor and take a big dose of joy and hilarity with Mary, Mary Quite: On Raising Children (and other mind altering substances). It is a light-hearted, fun-loving look at life’s ups and downs, not to mention it is amusingly insightful.
Mary Huckstep tackles many of life’s touchy subjects, such as parenting, family living, finding yourself, and the difference between girls and boys. She portrays these subjects with truth, and a bit of twisted humor. Simply written, Huckstep delivers her stories with style and finesse. The underlying theme woven through her text is to laugh at life’s mishaps and enjoy being joyful. Every chapter is filled with an element of comedy and wit, causing the reader to laugh out loud. Furthermore, each chapter has a comic illustration that captures the essence of the author’s words. As a mom, wife and grandmother, I found myself relating to every chapter. Mary, Mary Quite: On Raising Children is full of humor, ageless wisdom, but wisdom that only comes from life experience. Can’t wait to read what she writes next.

Non-Fiction - Humor/Comedy
Exceptionally well written, organized and presented, This Time It's NOT Personal: Why Science Says Get over Yourself by Sam Hicken Ph.D. is an inherently captivating read that is as informed and informative as it is thoughtful and thought-provoking. However, the author begins with an insurance, I suppose, by saying, 'There are flights of absurdist fancy interleaved with the science,' giving himself an escape route if things don’t go well. No, this well written work does not seem to be in need of any such thing, stating in the beginning, 'for a scientist the bitterest truth is better than the sweetest lie,' and thus it takes all issues head on.
Sam Hicken Ph.D. dwells on the origins of the universe and life, describing experiments of passing an electric spark to a mixture of carbon, hydrogen, etc. to find out how organic molecules came to life. Interwoven with a respectable amount of humor, he reminds us of a common research pitfall. While looking for connections when some things show up on the day of a full moon, people think, “Ah, full moon,” but on the other 28 days nobody thinks, “Ah, not full moon.” He has demonstrated the perspective view of the book’s theme; the descriptions are full of uncommon aspects of events and occurrences with, for example, people investing their IQ in buttressing their own case rather than in exploring the matter more thoroughly and evenhandedly.
With plenty of references to popular literature in related fields, and invoking all the known experts in its genre like Richard Dawkins, this book has the potential to hold the attention of many a reader. Easy to understand and with a flowing narrative, this is a good addition to one's library. The book ends with a comment that is so true: Life is the dancer, lighten up and enjoy the show.

Love, Regret and Accidental Nudity: My True Stories, Unusual Circumstances, Unpredictable Outcomes by Mariana Williams is an extremely funny book that had me laughing out loud and always smiling. I don’t usually read non-fiction but the description caught my attention and I am delighted that it did. I haven’t enjoyed reading a book just for fun, well, in forever. Mariana shares the stories of her life with us, the readers. Each chapter is a new and wonderful story. We begin with Mariana taking acting lessons and go on from there. We share in her teenage weekend in Beverly Hills; go along with her on New Year’s Eve; go to a funeral with a very unusual coffin; feel her joy and pain as she falls in and out of love; her 'sort of' meeting the Obamas; her low cost eye lifting plastic surgery experience; vacations, massages and more.
Love, Regret and Accidental Nudity is one hundred and fifty pages of perfection. Mariana Williams is a superior storyteller who leaves you wanting more. I will be adding all of her books onto to my Kindle reading list. I felt as though Mariana was a good friend telling me her latest escapade. Love, Regret and Accidental Nudity is the perfect book to read while sunbathing at the pool, relaxing in the tub, whenever and wherever you need an escape from the pressures of your everyday life. I cannot imagine Love, Regret and Accidental Nudity not becoming the next most talked about new book and spending a very long time on the top of the bestseller list.

A Job for Joe by Joe Paris Lee takes a humorous look at Joe's working life. Joe has had no less than 56 jobs in 60 years, something of a record perhaps. A Job for Joe takes us into the roller-coaster ride of his attempts at a “career” or several. Hold on tight as Joe’s coaster crawls its way to the top and then flings its readers into the most hair-raising journey of their lives. Far from being a slacker who cannot hold down a job, Joe juggles his way through a number of different jobs, each one with its own story and each one with the same eventual outcome. Readers, be prepared to be entertained in a seriously big way.
A Job for Joe by Joe Paris Lee is one of the funniest and best books I have read in a long time. He is a seriously good writer, very funny and has an amazing way with words. I cannot remember ever having laughed so much at a book. This was one of those 'can’t put down' books. I just wanted to see what scrapes he got into next and I wanted to see what the eventual outcome was. As well as being a humorous look at Joe's working life, it’s also a lesson of sorts – well, several lessons actually. You will find yourself thinking hard in between picking yourself up off the floor from laughing. I would love to read more books from Joe, especially if they are as funny and thought-provoking as A Job for Joe.
