Non-Fiction - Health - Medical
Dr. Edith Shiro details her five-stage model for post-traumatic growth in her book, The Unexpected Gift of Trauma, written in two parts. Dr. Shiro begins by explaining the terms surrounding trauma and provides an in-depth look at post-traumatic growth, keeping culture, generation, and neurochemistry in mind. The second part details her five-stage model and mentions tools and practices to help with healing and growth, obstacles, and ways you may continue to move forward with a healthy mindset. Dr. Shiro includes a post-traumatic growth inventory and hopes her readers will become stronger, making meaningful connections while growing from the trauma instead of despite it.
Her grandparents' experiences during wars shaped and hurt them physically and mentally, so Dr. Edith Shiro has witnessed post-traumatic stress in survivors of traumatic incidents for most of her life. While reminding readers that trauma is our response to certain events, she presents stories that will motivate individuals to try her process. Dr. Shiro combats myths about trauma and post-traumatic growth, preparing readers if someone focuses negatively on their process. The author explains trauma in a relatable way and includes conditional factors so everyone will feel positive about taking the first step in her model. After the first year of the pandemic, many news sources cited returning to a "new normal." After reading Dr. Shiro's work, I feel as though anyone who has completed the steps would evolve into a "new normal" as their post-traumatic growth brings new perceptions and a better sense of self-worth. Anyone who has been in a situation that resulted in trauma - either personal or generational - would benefit from reading The Unexpected Gift of Trauma.

Kickass Healthy LADA: How to Thrive with Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults by Jacqueline Haskins is a self-help book for people who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes but in reality suffer from Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults, or diabetes 1.5. Most people who have LADA are often misdiagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Jacqueline is here with this helpful book to guide those who are fighting the disease. Jacqueline was also misdiagnosed and she looked for information that would help her with her condition. After years of research, she came up with this helpful guide. It lists the different types of diabetes, the best treatment for LADA, what other tools you can use to fight this disease, and how you can enjoy food without fear of aggravating your condition.
As someone who has seen many loved ones fight Type 2 diabetes all their lives, Kickass Healthy LADA is an eye-opening book that answers so many questions. It has a plethora of good advice, helpful information, research-driven facts, and sound tools that will help a person fighting LADA to conquer it. I not only learned more about this condition, but I also learned how to help manage it with good food and healthy living practices. It is strange how not many people are aware of this, yet they are still fighting it every single day under the misapprehension of it being Type 2 diabetes. I loved how the guide was filled with helpful information rather than advocating overnight changes that few of us can achieve. It was more about motivating readers to change their lifestyles to live a better life with a healthy body and mind. The author used simple vocabulary to make sure her message came across to people of all ages. The tools and advice that Jacqueline Haskins provides are practical, easy to follow, and will save lives.

What to Expect and How to Prepare for Your Surgery: A Patient’s Guide to Undergoing Anesthesia and More! by Fei Zheng-Ward, MD, MPH is a concise guide with helpful information for patients about to undergo surgery who want to learn about what happens to them before, during, and even after the procedure. The book focuses on the process of administering anesthesia for surgery, the types of anesthesia, its history, different purposes, and the risks involved. In this book, we learn why it is so important to follow doctors’ orders or requirements before surgery and why it is crucial to be honest with healthcare providers before a procedure.
Although I’ve never had surgery, I have a sister who has, so I was thrilled to come across What to Expect and How to Prepare for Your Surgery. It is also important to stay informed and educated. I particularly appreciated that Fei Zheng-Ward explains why you are always told not to eat eight hours before surgery and the risks non-adherence to this requirement could pose. The author even went further to provide a list of foods and the corresponding times that need to pass before you can go in for surgery. Fei mentions other ways to be prepared, such as a checklist of personal items to bring to the hospital. I especially appreciated learning about the anesthesia given to pregnant women. The author emphasizes that this book should be read in addition to medical advice and should not replace what doctors tell you because different medical conditions and advice vary on a case-to-case basis. I found this book very informative, and I highly recommend it.

Celiac Mom is a must-read memoir. In it, Ann Campanella talks about her little daughter, Sydney, who suffered health issues such as frequent stomachaches after eating, bloating, constipation, trouble sleeping, and delayed growth. Ann tried to understand what was wrong with her daughter's health, but no one gave her an answer. When Sydney was five years old, she finally received a celiac diagnosis, and everything changed for her and her family. Ann, a noncook, and her husband, who loved eating food containing gluten or dairy, suddenly had to accept a major lifestyle change to keep their daughter safe. Ann writes about how they removed themselves or readjusted to all social activities involving gluten-related food. Ann rethought everything, built new, healthy habits, and learned to cook gluten-free meals.
Celiac Mom by Ann Campanella is an excellent, hopeful, and helpful book about a mother's determination to nourish her daughter and keep her healthy. While the transition to a gluten-free lifestyle can be difficult for people with celiac disease because there are many hidden sources of gluten, this book proves that everyone can benefit from eliminating or reducing gluten, dairy, or both. It shows the challenges one may face while shifting to a gluten-free lifestyle and the importance of strict adherence. Celiac Mom is for those diagnosed with celiac disease, as well as those who wish to switch to a dairy- or gluten-free diet to improve their health. Ann offers helpful resources, gluten-free recipes that are easy to make, even for noncooks, information on symptoms of celiac, tips on avoiding gluten or transitioning to a gluten-free life, and more.

Ten To Life: Delirium Tales of a Covid-19 Survivor is a work of non-fiction in the medical subgenre. It is suitable for the general reading audience and was penned by Mike Joyner. The book follows the author's experiences with Covid-19 which included four hospitals in forty days, located all over the USA. Despite having no pre-existing health conditions and being in good shape, the author barely survived his infection and spent over two weeks in a medically induced coma. Using the book to share the experience of not just the physical but also the psychological effects of Covid-19, the author relates the terrifying journey.
It’s strange to think that at the time of writing this review, Covid-19 is mostly behind us. For many of us, our worst memories of the pandemic will be the lockdown restrictions and the impact they had, but for numerous people, the consequences of the virus itself will be felt for a long time to come. Such was the experience of Mike Joyner, who shares his traumatic journey of suffering the effects of the virus in this insightful and painfully honest reflection. Depicting the kind of hardship that the author underwent is a challenging prospect, but through outstanding and well-considered prose, I reached the end of the book feeling as if I better understood an event far removed from any I’ve lived through. Ten To Life is an odyssey into a dark and sometimes mind-bending experience that few have suffered and even fewer have the skill to depict so vividly on the page.

Non-Fiction - Health - Medical
Scars of Gold by Sharon Stoliar is a powerful and eye-opening look at one woman's life-changing medical trauma at the hands of those she trusted most with her health. Hospital malpractice and neglect aren't unheard of, but Sharon's shocking account shows how quickly and easily it can happen. In Scars of Gold, she recounts her case and the painful steps she's taken since on her difficult road to recovery as she attempts to regain her life and independence. Hers is a relevant and heartbreaking account of one woman's story, but as she came to find out, it didn't end when she left the hospital. Along with the help of friends and family, Sharon's story is an inspirational read of her learning to redefine herself. The damage done was permanent, but her faith and determination only grew as she set out to make a difference.
Scars of Gold by Sharon Stoliar grabbed my attention from the first page. Stoliar writes in a beautiful conversational style as if she's right there with the reader as she recounts her story. I found myself reading halfway through in a single sitting, and if I hadn't needed to stop to deal with chores, I'd have finished this one in a single sitting as well! Sharon's story is unique, but her struggles with ACS (Acute Compartment Syndrome) are not something to be glossed over. Her case and the medical professionals' disregard for her care is a frightening problem, and issues like these only seem to be increasingly commonplace in hospitals today. Determined to raise awareness to protect others from the struggles she faced, she tells her story in Scars of Gold. This is a quick read but a deeply emotional one. I hope her inspiring and powerful story helps others on their path to healing and their search for answers as much as it's helped me.

This extraordinary book is easily readable by those with no background experience in healthcare and is extremely interesting reading for those with experience in this area. It is a roadmap through a disease that is uncertain. The resources and ideas presented can assist caregivers, families, and healthcare professionals. If Your Mouth Could Talk: An In-Depth Guide to Oral Health and Its Impact on Your Entire Life by Kami Hoss is not your average self-help book. Our dental health may be the most underrated yet the most overlooked at the same time. In the grand scheme of things, we forget why oral health is essential - not just for our breath and teeth, but also for our gut system and overall health. Kami Hoss reiterates how our oral health can impact our lives; from affecting our mouth health to affecting our sleep, emotional health, and affecting psychological health as well. Your oral health goes “beyond brushing and flossing” and the author explains that well.
I love how If Your Mouth Could Talk has just five chapters and a conclusion. It is effective without being overbearing, which in my opinion, is the perfect way to drive the message home. Although the target audience of this book is parents who are concerned about the dental and oral health of their children, I believe this book can help more people. Dr. Kami Hoss gives little tips, raises awareness, and makes sure parents/readers are aware of what is truth and what is just a myth. The language is simple yet powerful; the combination ensures the information is digested. The pace is perfect, nothing is rushed, and never did I feel like the information was going over my head. Reading it was a pleasure and educational at the same time.

Coming Full Circle: Healing Trauma Using Psychedelics by Shannon Duncan is a detailed guide to experimenting with various psychedelic substances. Even though purchasing, possessing, or supplying psychedelics is illegal in most countries, the potential of psychedelics to help heal emotional trauma cannot be denied. This story dives into the bad reputation of psychedelics and the misconceptions and misinformation about how they can be used for healing. It's about Duncan's experience using these powerful substances and his process of healing that benefitted him. It is part memoir and part informative guide where Duncan talks about his traumatic experiences, emotional wounds, and what it means to use psychedelics as a medicine.
Coming Full Circle by Shannon Duncan is the most informative, thoughtful, and helpful book I've read on psychedelic substances. I highly appreciate every piece of information and advice he shares. This well-written guide offers a powerful, hopeful, and unorthodox approach to healing where Duncan sheds new light on guided medicine work for healing trauma. He explains what it involves, and the profound ways someone might evolve and change through it. If you're suffering from the devastating effects of trauma and deep emotional wounds and are interested in considering this path to healing, this is a great start. It teaches you what to expect and how to prepare your body and mind. It helps you to properly prepare and begin this ongoing cathartic journey of self-awareness, personal growth, and healing. Most importantly, it teaches you how important it is to have qualified support for the psychedelic journey and how to identify if someone is qualified to help you with your specific needs. This is a remarkable must-read.

The Stress Book: Forty-Plus Ways to Manage Stress & Enjoy Your Life by D. Terrence Foster, MD. is a comprehensive approach to help us reduce our levels of stress. These were already high before the pandemic, and they are (understandably) much higher now generally speaking. This is a burning issue and Dr. Foster wrote this guide to help us navigate the most complicated challenges in the quest for more quiet and calm. The book includes four main sections including the basics of stress and its management, the physical actions, the mental actions, and the community actions we can put in place to reduce our stress levels.
The Stress Book: Forty-Plus Ways to Manage Stress & Enjoy Your Life by D. Terrence Foster, MD. is a completely holistic guide that will help and support many of us navigate life in a complicated world. In fact, the environmental crisis, the pandemic, the wars, and our continued hunger for progress are all factors of aggravated stress. This book helps us deal with stress one baby step at a time, one section at a time. We need to focus on the physical actions we can take to feel better, quieter, then the mental ones and the community ones. This guide is deeply holistic and comprehensive. We are given grids and worksheets to help us evaluate our stress levels, and to identify what really stresses us out. Dr. Foster’s Action Plan is devised for us to implement diverse actions to improve our lifestyles and make us less prone to stress. This book is amazing and simple to understand even if the author explains in detail the science behind stress. The index and list of resources and links are extremely helpful too. Thank you for this gem of a book.
