Vibrant: A Groundbreaking Program to Get Energized, Own Your Health, and Glow, by Stacie Stephenson, is the fresh, motivational guide you need to make a new start on the new you. Coming from the philosophy that we can control much of our health just by the choices we make in food, exercise, and attitude, this book offers practical advice most health and wellness books don't. It's all about accountability. Of course, some health concerns can't be avoided, but some can, and this author shows you which parts of your life and health you can do something about. I like the message that it's never too late to take charge of nutrition and fitness; never too late to become vibrant.
As you read Dr. Stephenson's book, you will begin to realize that your health isn't just in the doctor's hands, it's in yours, in most cases. So many give their lives over to whatever health condition may come, trusting medication and the healthcare system to correct any problem. But this guide is about preventing health conditions. Diet and exercise are things we can control, and this book explains how to use them to maintain health and vitality. Besides diet and exercise, you'll learn about the importance of quality sleep, boosting the immune system, why social interaction is necessary and more. With supplements, detox, and positive thinking being popular subjects during the last few decades, the doctor explains what they are and how they work.
Working on the self takes some knowledge and self-discipline, but it can change and perhaps save lives, and that's why this book is so important. In addition to all of this good information, which lays the groundwork for a lifestyle reset, you'll get actionable advice like a two-week meal plan, healthy recipes, and assessment tools to help you figure out where you are health-wise. The author doesn't ask you to make all these changes overnight, but in baby steps, which can make goals a lot easier to set and keep, like cutting your energy crutch in half, or finding a healthier replacement for it. Better health can begin on the inside, and it can begin with you. If you're ready to take the first step into a healthy, vibrant future, let Vibrant by Stacie Stephenson be your guide.

The Greatest College Health Guide You Never Knew You Needed: How to Manage Food, Booze, Stress, Sex, Sleep, and Exercise on Campus by Jill and Dave Henry instantly caught my attention as a mother and teacher. This guide kept its promises: it is comprehensive and engaging. Students need all the support they can get, particularly in these times of crisis when it is hard for them to study in a relaxed way and take care of themselves. This knowledgeable, fun companion explores a wide range of topics, including food, exercise, stress, sleep, and even “booze”! It contains inspirational stories from the authors but also, and maybe more importantly, numerous quotes from actual college students, which make this guide even more relatable and valuable.
The Greatest College Health Guide You Never Knew You Needed is wittily written and extremely entertaining as well as exhaustive, useful, and handy. It is written in a no-nonsense, delightful way. Advice is given but Jill and Dave Henry make sure students understand that they are not giving a “recipe”, a “diet” to be followed blindly, but are sharing sound advice to feel and learn better. First and foremost, the authors explore what students should do to be healthier. I particularly liked the food chapter but they are all important and well-designed. I highly recommend this comprehensive and engaging guide which is bound to help students get on the path of better health as they learn and graduate. Actually a must-read for teachers as well as students.

Baby Got Back In Her Pants: A Simple Plan to Thrive on a Plant-Based Diet by Christin Bummer is much more than just a health and fitness book, it is actually a combination of various books. Indeed, it is first and foremost a guide, which makes you understand why you have not managed to keep your word when you wanted to lead a healthier life, or simply lose weight. It is a comprehensive and fun workbook to guide you further and help you make good decisions one step at a time, a guide to cooking healthier food, with recipe ideas that are neat and delicious (and so simple), a mentoring program (with a Facebook group I have already joined), a newsletter, numerous free bonuses (audiobook, workbook, recipes), and so much more!
Baby Got Back In Her Pants: A Simple Plan to Thrive on a Plant-Based Diet by Christin Bummer kept me up twice because (unlike such personal development books in general) I could not put it down! Christin is so encouraging, so welcoming and friendly that you just want to learn more about her, about her journey to a healthier and thus happier life, that you seek advice to launch on the same path. This book is engrossing and helps you figure out what prevented you from becoming vegan (for instance). I have been trying to stop eating dairy products for a while and this book has given me the impulse to really try again one baby step after another. To top it all, Christin is never judgmental and this type of book is exactly what most of us need. Thank you for such a treasure!

There are books that are eye-opening, some that entertain readers and fill them with the delights they look for when exploring new ideas or journeying with relatable characters, but when I opened The Vail Method: Dr. Ehrlich's Guide to Getting Better Not Just Older by Mathew Ehrlich, MD, I couldn't help but exclaim: “At last, here is a book for me!” Since I turned 40, I have been experiencing the symptoms that are captured in the opening pages of this book: the restlessness at night, the overwhelming feeling of having much to do with little time and less energy, the need for reading glasses, the “sex drive that is as tired as you are,” and many aging signs that are as disturbing as they are real. The book opens with statements and words that capture the familiar experiences and feelings of the intended audience and then moves on to define what it is all about. It is about the “lactate threshold testing,” a wellness method that is designed to help readers age gracefully.
In this book, the author offers a holistic approach to pursuing and embracing a healthier lifestyle and aging gracefully. The high points of the Vail Method are summarized in four core aspects: plant-based diet and nutrition, aerobic exercise with lactate threshold testing and heart rate-based training, rest, with avoidance of overtraining, and adequate sleep, and mindfulness and relaxation. Maintaining an ideal body weight and good nutrition are key in this method. This book is packed with useful information and proven steps to a healthy lifestyle. There are very interesting topics, insights, and exercises that are designed for optimal results. I found answers in chapters dealing with mindfulness and the author's take on how to tell the mind to shut up, optimizing the fitness routine, and recovering after downtime. The Vail Method: Dr. Ehrlich's Guide to Getting Better Not Just Older is a book with scientifically proven steps to a life of wholeness, written in a style that is conversational and a tone that is strong and authoritative. The author combines strong writing with real-life stories to craft a message that will bring more value to the lives of his readers. A must-read for anyone who wants to stay fit and age with grace.

The End of Chronic Fatigue: How to Have Endless Energy & Feel Fantastic by Zana Carver and Gina Heath is a non-fiction self-help book written by two authors who connected over a mutual understanding of a problem that seems to be universally misunderstood. Carver and Heath tackle the issue of chronic fatigue, exhaustion, depression, anxiety, a general feeling of “brain fog” and a number of other related symptoms. Where this book takes a unique turn in a direction few other guides venture is that it deals almost exclusively with un/misdiagnosed and improperly treated thyroid problems. The first stage in combating this comes with appropriate testing, which is thoroughly detailed to ensure, as a patient, that one is asking for (and receiving) the correct procedures. From there, Carver and Heath move forward in addressing the results, medication, science, nutrition (with recipes), and management of the diagnosis.
As someone who has long suffered from fatigue and always just chalked it up to not getting enough sleep or sheer emotional exhaustion,The End of Chronic Fatigue by Zana Carver and Gina Heath was something of a revelation to me. The science described is a little complex and required a second look, but everything really did make sense. The personal elements imparted by Carver and Heath, particularly Carver's cancer journey, made the book feel less like a medical guide and more like a friend explaining the what's-what about our bodies. The thyroid is a gland that is woefully overlooked and the perspective that there is more to our fatigue than the standard (and often misdiagnosed) issues was an absolute eye-opener. Easy to read and comprehend, I'd recommend this book to anyone who suffers from, or cares for someone who suffers from, chronic fatigue.

Non-Fiction - Health - Fitness

Zeus Defied: Mastering The Mindset Of Weight Loss is a nonfiction health and wellness book written by Rezwan Khan. In his prologue, the author recounts the story of King Sisyphus who is condemned by Zeus to eternally toil at rolling a massive boulder up a mountain. Each time he finally reaches the top, the boulder rolls back down to the bottom again. Khan sees a parallel between that mythical punishment and the superhuman efforts most dieters make to lose that extra weight, only to find that it was all for naught. He delves into the human brain and the role played by the prefrontal cortex in determining the success or failure of our efforts at self-discipline, and he demonstrates how stress or simple fatigue at the end of the day can overwhelm our brains and leave our dieting aspirations defenseless when we most need reserves of strength. In his own efforts to change his eating habits and regain some control over his weight and health, Khan formulated a Nine Phase Weight Loss program that is designed to work despite the vagaries of the prefrontal cortex. Rather than relying upon one’s powers of self-discipline, which Khan ably debunks, each phase is designed to work as something habitual, like brushing one’s teeth in the morning. When healthy habits are accomplished as a matter of course, they are far less likely to go off-track due to stress, fatigue, etc. Each phase smoothly works into the next, enabling the dieter to level their own Sisyphean mountain and regain their optimal health.
Zeus Defied is a well-written and engaging work by someone who’s been there. I was fascinated by his discussion of the brain and the role of the cortex, and was relieved to finally find out why dieting seems so impossible -- especially at the end of the day. His plan is sensible and well-constructed. I especially appreciated the information he provides on nutritional subjects such as dairy, sugars, and the benefits of switching to frequent and smaller meals. The appendices at the end of the book are also quite useful, particularly the glycemic index tables, and tables of meats by leanness. There’s also a wealth of links in his list of references. Zeus Defied: Mastering The Mindset Of Weight Loss is highly recommended.
