In a highly unique and interesting novel by debut author David E. Stevens, Impact, the first volume of the Fuzed Trilogy, readers will be treated to an entertaining and thought provoking read. Follow the story of our protagonist, Josh, as he contemplates his new life. He was given a second chance at life after he was fatally injured in a horrific accident. Brought back from death with a mission to save the world, Josh's life will never be the same. Everyone he knew and loved believes he is dead; he has a new look and identity, and oh, yes, he has two years how to figure out how to save the world from impending disaster. Will Josh be successful? You'll need to read the book to find out!
I very much enjoyed Impact. Author David E. Stevens obviously has an inventive mind, and this shines forth in this book. He's done a fantastic job in writing an exciting and surprising story line, as well as characters that his readers will certainly connect with and care about. Impact will grab readers from the very first page, and will keep them reading obsessively until the very end, it is just that good. Any reader that loves a book with action, adventure, mystery, a work of science fiction, or just a great read that will make them think "what if?" should definitely read Impact. I highly recommend this book, and will be keeping my eye out for the next installments of this very promising series by author David E. Stevens.

Fiction - Adventure

Louisiana Man is a historical western novel written by Lloyd Antypowich. Tom Menzer left his family's farm in Louisiana when he was nineteen years old. He wanted to be a cowboy and decided to head to Texas, a part of the country known for cowboys and large ranches. His skills with horses soon attracted the attention of the boss at the Bar X Ranch. His name was Ross O'Riley, and he quickly became attached to the young man and treated him as a son. Ross helped Tom set up his first homestead, with the aid of Mex and Patchy, Tom's friends who also worked at the Bar X. Tom learned about Indians and the stresses between them and the encroaching settlers from Ross. Ross counseled that respect would go a long way with the tribes, and Tom took that wisdom to heart and would rely upon it his whole life. Tom ended up leaving Texas after a wealthy rancher's sons assaulted Tom, Mex and Patchy, leaving one son wounded and the other dead. Jones, the aggrieved father, would be hounding Tom wherever he went in his quest for vengeance.
Lloyd Antypowich's historical western novel, Louisiana Man, brings the west to life with a focus on the impact of the western expansion on the American Indian tribes and their way of life. Tom Menzer's life and successes are intimately wound up with the Indians he encounters, and his diplomatic skills and caring nature make him a credible and attractive character. I especially enjoyed Tom's work with the wild horses he finds and works with in the open lands. The author sets his story in a succession of locations, which gave me a grand perspective to compare and contrast life in Texas, North Dakota and Alberta during the latter part of the nineteenth century. His coverage of the plight of the American Indian is comprehensive and compassionately related. Louisiana Man is a rich and evocative work whose main character is resilient, resourceful and kind. It's highly recommended.

Fiction - Adventure

Rondo (The Landon Saga Book 4) by Tell Cotton is a true Western story. Rondo Landon is well known throughout the West for having a fast gun that killed bad guy Ben Kinrich. However, he has given up his outlaw ways and is now working as a ranch hand in Empty Lake, Texas, he is in love and ready to settle down. When he is approached by several people of the town and asked to become the sheriff and rid the town of the outlaws, he cannot refuse. Ike Nash and his son Tanner are the bad guys. Rondo and his deputy, Ross Stewart, quickly have their troubles laid out when Tanner kills Jeremiah Batch for control of his horses and ranch. More trouble arrives when Virgil rides into town and tells Rondo he is only there to kill him.
Tell Cotton has continued the Landon Saga that started with Confessions of a Gunfighter and the story has gotten better and better. I was drawn in from the very first paragraph and couldn’t stop reading until I reached the very last word. Rondo will have you sitting on the porch of the jailhouse with old friends, sharing in all of the action. Tell Cotton tells the story with accurate facts, wonderful characters and a plot that will keep you reading long into the night. Rondo is a must-read Western genre book. Tell Cotton has a bright future as a Western storyteller and I can hardly wait for book five of the saga.

Widow Walk
Gerard LaSalle

Fiction - Adventure

Gerard LaSalle’s Widow Walk is a brave account of history, shared mainly from a woman’s perspective as her husband is killed by savages, and her son is taken by the savages to be traded as a slave. The woman, Emmy, is married to an aborigine named Isaac, who is believed to be legendary, and as such, when Isaac is killed the savages take his son, believing he is worth more because of his father’s spirit. Widow Walk’s main character, Emmy, is white, has been married several times and subsequently widowed. It is a heartbreaking yet empowering tale of how Emmy courageously sets her fears aside after the murder of her husband and a near-fatal miscarriage, and searches to find her son and rescue him.
Told using mostly back story, Gerard LaSalle cleverly and poignantly takes readers through a time machine, back to the days before North America was settled, and slavery was rampant. To a time when both items and people were traded for any number of things. History buffs will rave over Widow Walk, as the author describes historical surroundings in great detail, giving an unheard of attention to lifestyle, mindset, and the general livelihood of aborigines back in the days of slavery. Feminists will also enjoy this rare look at history through the eyes of a female, and will give a thumbs-up to Emmy and how well her character is portrayed as a strong, independent, intelligent, and shrewd businesswoman.
This is not a light story; it is one that needs full attention as some passages are very detailed and jumpy in keeping with the essence of historical data. Challenging at times is the lack of dialogue, although if you’re a reader that enjoys an intense read, this will be a new addition to your list of favourites.

The Civilian
Michael Bickel

Fiction - Adventure

The Civilian is an adventure story written by Michael Bickel. Robert Caron is only 32 years old, and he's just received a death sentence. The cancer that killed his father and uncle is now killing him. Robert is in a daze as he goes through his ordinary motions. He goes back to his job in a call center and continues hawking magazine subscriptions until a perceptive and kind older woman's words cause him to stop and realize what was actually happening. He walks off the job and goes to a funeral home to arrange his burial. The next day, government agents come to his apartment with a request for him. They want him to assassinate a South American drug lord. Caron, it seems, is related to the drug lord's beloved wife, and he's their best chance at getting close enough to make the killing.
Michael Bickel's psychological thriller, The Civilian, is taut and suspenseful. Caron, a hypochondriac and germophobe, was barely alive until his death was staring him in the face. It seems to free him to become the action and adventure hero that he never dreamed of becoming; a man who acts decisively and forcefully. I was quickly wrapped up in Caron's dilemma and resulting transformation. Bickel's characters are sharply defined and striking, especially Agent Young, the sociopathic government assassin who takes Robert under his wing. This fast-paced and exciting thriller is filled with intense images of the drug lord's compound and the underworld Caron infiltrates armed with nothing more than a poison pill and the prescription medication that's keeping him alive. This tightly scripted and elegant tale resonates long after the last paragraph is read. The Civilian is most highly recommended.

Fiction - Adventure

A Demon’s Quest - The Beginning of the End by Charles Carfagno Jr. is an epic fantasy adventure that begins with Gilex setting the ground work for his plans to awaken the Blood Knights and use them for the good of mankind. The next section introduces Repan, the self-proclaimed Lord of the Mind. With his powers of illusion and magic, he plans on ruling the region. Then the story switches back and forth between two friends, Torhan and Jacko. Jacko is a monk from the order of the White Fist. When Jacko’s return from his promotion contest is delayed, Torhan is manipulated into performing an errand for the mysterious Lord Grappin. Armed with an enchanted sword and dagger, he gets caught up in a whirlwind ride of adventures befitting the brand of Dungeon & Dragons.
Charles Carfagno’s characters are all unique and well described, from different species of fanatical humanoids, monstrous insects, magic, and swordplay to explicitly described martial arts. As a dungeon master of three decades, I was thoroughly entertained. I could easily visualize the rolls of the dice for saving throws when things didn't go in favor of our heroes. Your heart goes out to a character on an urgent mission with a time limit, when he loses his memory after hitting his head during an escape. I like my books smart, well written, gripping, full of action, and with a sense of humor. A Demon's Quest fires on all cylinders from the first page and leaves you wanting more. This is a must-read for D&D and fantasy fans.

Fiction - Adventure

Gambit of the Glass Crowns by Ethan Risso is Volume One of The Sundered Kingdoms Trilogy. Connor unwillingly becomes a herald of his era, due to the poisonous Féinmhuinín’s arrow that nearly killed him. Wars, tension between clans, political conspiracy as well as magic and romance -- Connor must find his destined path through all this.
Gambit of the Glass Crowns hits the ground running with the attack of Castle Cærwyn in Chapter I. The pace of the story is excellent. Political drama, magic, and other elements blend perfectly in this exciting fantasy tale. I appreciate the fact that a glossary for characters' names and backgrounds is provided in the beginning of the novel. It certainly helps to identify with the diverse set of characters. Ethan Risso brilliantly weaves the story with faultless prose and ensures each character receives enough attention and development as the novel progresses.
Volume One is, without doubt, a great start for the trilogy, and I genuinely think that Ethan Risso has sealed his place in the writing industry through his debut. The plot is unpredictable and multi-layered. Readers will definitely gravitate toward Connor in no time, and will support his endeavors and cheer every time he survives an ordeal. I'm also fascinated with the Meïnir and I cannot wait to see how Connor will adjust to his new role in Arlais.
All in all, I highly recommend this beautifully crafted fantasy to fellow readers and I look forward to Volume Two of The Sundered Kingdoms Trilogy.

Fiction - Adventure

J.M. Erickson’s Future Prometheus: Emergence & Evolution certainly does not disappoint his readers. Jose Melendez heads a US mission in Brazil where he witnesses a whole city’s male population going on a killing frenzy and ultimately being wiped out. An abnormal level of toxic steroids found in men is identified as the reason for the bizarre incident and worse, it is happening all over the world. Apparently, Melendez is immune from it and he becomes the key to eradicate the phenomenon. To examine his past, he is made to undergo cryogenic sleep but something goes horribly wrong. He wakes up after a hundred and sixty years of sleep to a world where mega-states are dominated by militant matriarchies, and populated by artificial persons and cybernetic life forms. With the help of cybernetic rescuers, he embarks on a mission to create a better world.
Fast paced, highly imaginative, and absolutely fascinating, Future Prometheus: Emergence & Evolution is a book that truly entertains. This is true for both fans of science fiction novels as well as for the general reader. The characters are quite interesting and varied. This is a story that tells of the struggles of the human species for survival. Threatened, we will go to extreme lengths in our quest for scientific knowledge because we believe it is the only way to save our race. This is also a story that reminds us of the risks that come in overreaching science and technology. In some instances, it can result in unintended consequences that can further disrupt the world as we know it.
I am awed by the fertile imagination of author J.M. Erickson in creating a new world order with very exciting characters. As a genius whose efforts to improve human existence may result in tragedy, the novel’s main protagonist is a character that you will not easily forget.

Fiction - Adventure

"Entwined Paths" by Tell Cotten takes you into Texas in 1872. A stagecoach is robbed, a young woman is taken, and two men are killed in the robbery. Yancy and Cooper Landon are soon in pursuit of the men who did it. Elsewhere the Landons' enemy Lee Mattingly is dealing with problems of his own. Betrayed, he sets out for vengeance. Along the path for that revenge he tries to help a young girl who is being held captive. Once Lee and the Landons cross paths they realize just how entwined the paths they are on are, and that they will have to go together.
Tell Cotten has written a fun fast-paced western that anyone who is a fan of the genre will enjoy. I have not read the first book in this series. However, I plan to go back and do that now. This could be a good stand alone. I enjoyed it even not having read the first. My favorite character is Lee; he might be different from Yancy and Cooper but I have always been drawn to the revenge-styled western men. The writing that Tell Cotten does is entertaining and everything is laid out in a way that makes the story flow. It has been a while since I have read a western that truly kept me as engaged as this one did. I could almost feel the heat and the dust from the wild west on my face. I would recommend this book to anyone who is ready to grab a six shooter and head out on for some adventure.

Buried Threads

Fiction - Adventure

Buried Threads by Kaylin McFarren is the second book in a series - however, you can very well just read the book on its own without knowing what happened in book 1. In volume 2, Rachel and Chase travel to Japan to help a monk - who turns out to be a rather unusual monk - to recover a precious sword. Unfortunately, he failed to mention that there would be quite a few complications along the way. Like the Yakuza. And sharks.
I chose to read this book because I usually love books that are set in Japan. Combine this with some adventure and it promises to be a good read. I couldn't quite give the book five stars because it took a while until the adventure actually started. I think the first 30 percent of the book could be a bit shorter - but that's just me. I liked how the characters were all very well developed and how they each had more or less clear goals and ideas that were unique to them. Many authors who use Japan as a setting just have no idea at all of the culture. Buried Threads is one of the books that doesn't mess up the Japanese background (there are mistakes, but people who don't know very much about Japan won't notice them). If you can overlook the mistakes, then the story is really well written, entertaining, and just the right mix of adventure, culture, and excitement. After a slow start, the book gets harder and harder to put down. At some stage you simply have to keep reading until you arrive at the end.
