The Purity Driven Life: God's Call to Character and Integrity by Mike Maxwell is a beautiful addition to inspirational Christian literature, a reminder of God’s invitation to everyone to live in His image by embracing a life of purity. Readers will be immediately attracted to the author’s deep sense of humility, which comes across in the opening pages of the book as he shares his personal journey towards a life of purity, a journey filled with challenges. There are very important and powerful points that come across in this book: 1) a life of purity is God’s design for every man and woman; 2) living in purity doesn’t come easily; 3) God’s grace gives us the strength to live a life that conforms to His will.
The author makes references to relevant scriptures that highlight the theme of purity, explore the human psychology about purity, and propose a path that readers can travel to embrace union with God by living chaste lives. I loved how the author explains the trap into which most people — including myself — are lured, the erroneous logic that purity is impossible and that God’s grace saved us so we don’t need to do anything. Just as Rainer Maria Rilke points out in Letters to a Young Poet: that something is difficult is enough reason for us to do it. Living according to God’s will isn’t easy, and that is where His grace becomes powerful, enabling us to muster the strength and courage to live the values of our calling to a life of grace. This is a powerful message to a world that idolizes sex and carnal sins, a well-written book that comes across as a tool of inner liberation for many of us. You should read The Purity Driven Life: God's Call to Character and Integrity by Mike Maxwell if you want your encounter with Jesus to be a meaningful and fulfilling one.

If you are feeling betrayed, hurt, mistreated or lack trust, keep on walking, literally. Keep Walking: 40 Days to Hope and Freedom after Betrayal by Lynn Marie Cherry is about the healing process that the author felt once betrayed by her husband, who was addicted to pornography. Walk with Lynn Marie Cherry through 40 days of healing, reflection and the word of God. She has taken her pain and life’s story to provide the reader with a tool and resource to navigate through the process. The material contained in Keep Walking is like working with a therapist. As you read through the book, take your time, embrace it, express your feelings, and work through those tough and challenging parts of you that are wounded and need a touch. On each of the 40 days, you will have a profound title dedicated to your deliverance, an affirmation of Today I Will…. and a Reflect and Response exercise, along with some scriptures to help provide adequate closure for the day. As an added bonus, there is a website dedicated to betrayed spouses and a pathway of healing for couples.
For me, Keep Walking: 40 Days to Hope and Freedom after Betrayal by Lynn Marie Cherry provided a catalyst that confirms that, despite what is happening, to keep walking and trust God, no matter what because He sees and knows all. Lynn Marie Cherry says, “...in the darkness I couldn’t see...all I wanted to do was curl up in a corner and cry the day away, these words from the Bible were like a warm blanket wrapping me up….giving me the courage to crawl out of my corner and face another day.” Only God could help Lynn Marie Cherry. And only God can help you and me. This is why it's important to slowly chew on and savor the material contained in Keep Walking because it will not only help you in your healing, but bless you as well.

Grace in Progress

Grace in Progress is a gorgeous book containing a personal reflection and a handbook of prayers. Included in the book is the complete story of author J.C. Beichner’s struggles and trauma in her early childhood and adolescence, all of which led her to the church and a religious calling of sorts. This beautiful and heart-wrenching introduction is followed up by a series of short prayers that touch on issues of love and trust through God, finding courage and strength in difficult times, and praying to Jesus when feeling as though you are broken. The book is short but contains everything that a person might need to feel comfortable after dealing with difficult times in life, and wanting to make connections to God and Jesus through prayer.
Grace in Progress first pulled me in as a reader with gripping storytelling, an honest voice, and prayers that seemed fitting for the theme of the book. Author J.C. Beichner does not sugarcoat her experiences as a child and a teenager, and while some of the events were difficult to read about, they were crucial to the story and the trajectory of her life, landing her where she is now. I truly enjoyed reading all the prayers for the broken, but I especially liked the Cast Out My Fear prayer and the Broken prayer. These prayers speak about love and being patient, and I think we could all use a few quiet moments to read this silently or aloud and reflect on our own lives. A beautiful book of prayers that is recommended!

In their most recent book, Wheels of Wisdom – Life Lessons for the Restless Spirit, Tim and Debbie Bishop give some pretty amazing stories of where they have traveled across America. This book inspires the reader to understand they aren’t alone in facing the difficulties of life. The authors enable the reader to quickly get engaged along the journey and to relate to both the negative as well as the positive issues they encounter.
We see how these challenges help to shape the characters of Tim and Debbie and how they become stronger and wiser through the traveled miles. There are scriptural passages throughout the book that point the reader to more than the authors' story, and show how one can deepen their own personal faith as they allow God to speak to them. There are also personal reflection questions at the end of each chapter which allow the reader to do a deeper self-evaluation.
Tim and Debbie Bishop take readers along on their miles and miles of beautiful scenery, gorgeous weather, exhilarating people, and the adventures that help to develop and shape both their journey as well as their life. This is a fun book as well as one that the reader can eagerly grow from as they read and make the journey alongside the Bishops. Their ending wrap-up, entitled “The Ultimate Destination,” was a fantastic way to both honor God as well as to bring to a close such a wonderful, exciting adventure traveling through various states and making numerous memories.

Blessings, Miracles and Supernatural Experiences
A Biblical Perspective, A Christian's Story
Christopher H.K. Persaud

Christian - Devotion/Study

Blessings, Miracles & Supernatural Experiences is a fascinating, in-depth look at miracles from God, and more specifically what it means to have God on your side and in your life. Many examples are given of dangerous situations Christopher H.K. Persaud encountered growing up and living in British Guiana (now known as Guyana), best known as the site of the Jim Jones People’s Temple massacre. It was a Third World rural country and so hospitals were minimal and doctors were scarce. Therefore, when an accident or severe illness took place, it often was life threatening. The faith of Persaud and his family prevented many a tragedy. Examples include a serious motor vehicle accident which Persaud was involved in, a missing child, almost catastrophic episodes of seizures, and other medical issues. The most interesting to me is the instances of demonic possession of acquaintances of Persaud and actual sightings of ghosts or other entities.
In all cases Persaud makes it very clear. Only by calling on the name of Jesus can we escape the worst that the spirit world has to throw at us. He has done a thorough job with Blessings, Miracles & Supernatural Experiences and provides many references of Scripture from the Bible, in addition to well-known Bible scholars and evangelists, to back up his statements and stories. This book would be a good addition to the libraries of Christians, particularly if they are in the mission field, as people accomplishing great things for the Christian kingdom are often attacked by the demonic world. Blessings, Miracles & Supernatural Experiences will let readers know what can happen and how to pray against attacks.

Not the Way You Thought It Would Be
Making Sense of the Journey of Faith
Glen Gibson

Christian - Devotion/Study

In his book Not The Way You Thought It Would Be, Glen Gibson tells the story of Abram and Sarai from the Bible. In many ways, Abram simply relied upon his own understanding instead of God's promises. In addition, this story relates well to our present day, in that we all have misplaced faith for a self-sufficient lifestyle that frequently supplants God from his rightful place as the center of our lives. We have good reasons why we allow this, but the truth is, faith needs to be strengthened on a daily basis through communicating with God and reading his love letter that He authored with attentive interest. Abram and Sarai faced many trials in their walk with God, but God was, as He always is, faithful.
The quality of writing and good, genuine counsel found in Glen Gibson's Not The Way You Thought It Would Be is simply astounding. Glen weaves personal stories into the narrative and that is a refreshing means to develop a relationship with the reader, who may never meet or get to know Glen personally. Glen speaks to us with a pastor's heart that is full of love for us, as well as the subject. He is obviously a great writer and his talent to weave through the story of Abram, and make it relate to our struggles today, is very profound. I just became so immersed in the story and his personal anecdotes that time would slip away and I felt closer to God because of it.

Growing a Sustainable Soul is a Christian Devotional/Study text written by Bob Flanagan. Flanagan explores how a sustainable soul can be a personal and enduring work created in partnership with God and nature. Each chapter is divided into sections that have study assignments at the end. Some call for reflection on the material covered in that section; others call for action; still others call for personal assessments. Each assignment page contains lines for the reader to record their responses and make this a personal workbook. We are all part of nature, and this modern age sometimes causes a break from our roots and the earth. Flanagan uses scripture to show how loving and sustaining the earth is part of God's plan, and how Jesus, the gardener, is evident in the many things he said and did. Flanagan also includes an index of Biblical references and a list of recommended readings.
Bob Flanagan's devotional Christian book, Growing a Sustainable Soul, is a religious study book to get excited about! Even if you've recently become disenchanted with your faith or gave up on it many years ago, Flanagan's lessons will come as a welcome and unexpected surprise. The devotionals included in this book are marvelous and promise many peaceful hours of meditation and increasing self-awareness. The action assignments prove that having faith and caring actively for the environment need not be mutually exclusive. In fact, the author will have you brainstorming on how you can do more to regain that lost connection with the earth. From deciding to buy produce directly from the farmers at farmers' markets to helping the homeless and less-advantaged in accordance with Biblical teaching, Growing a Sustainable Soul shows just how grand the concept of muscular Christianity can be. I'm so inspired by this book! Growing a Sustainable Soul is most highly recommended.
