There, he becomes involved with Ian Blair, a corporate attorney connected to a classified project built around Red Sky, a dangerous street drug derived from Narin’s research. At the same time, Narin begins a relationship with Sophie Whitely, a painter still haunted by the death of her former fiancé, Ravi Reddy, whose history with Harvester goes further than Narin first realizes. As Narin rises inside the company, he discovers that Harvester’s leadership is divided by rivalries linked to human experimentation and control of Red Sky. The closer Narin moves toward power, the harder it becomes for him to separate his ambition from obsession.
A.B. Acharya’s Red Sky is a unique speculative thriller. Narin is the epitome of an unreliable narrator, shown by his decline and how frighteningly real his hallucinations become. The poor guy even starts knife combat training in his basement. I love JoAnn Carpenter, another neuroscientist at Harvester who is an absolute shark. Brilliant, capable, and ready to rumble with the C-suite, she's a mixed bag of motives. At the heart of the story is Red Sky, and the dangers of a drug with huge humanitarian potential are effectively weaponized. The experimentation is brutal. Equally impressive are the landscapes: St. Louis feels fully inhabited through locations such as Central West End bookstores crowded with students and researchers, deteriorating rental houses with lingering incense and dust, and polished labs overlooking neighborhoods affected by Red Sky. Well-written, immersive, with some solid twists and a shocking ending, this book is as consuming as the title implies. Recommended.

But the sinister force haunting the hospital came close to endangering those Harry cared about, and he was determined to protect his loved ones at all costs.

The writing was exceptional, keeping me engaged from beginning to end. I found myself racing through the pages, eager to discover what would unfold next. Just how tough soon becomes clear when the rest of her team doesn’t turn up. She’s on her own, but she’s not fully qualified to perform the operations to save lives. If that weren’t bad enough, her post-op patients are mysteriously dying. She gets together with Dr. Paul Bennet, the on-call psychiatrist, to find out why, but what they find leaves them shocked. A serial killer is on the loose in the hospital, and both Paul and Rylan are in the crosshairs. Can they solve this before they become the next victims?
Be prepared for a long night, because Call Game by Graham Elder and Laura Cody is a book you won’t put down until you’ve finished it. If you’ve ever worked in an ER, you might think you are reading a true-life account, but that’s to be expected given that both authors are medical professionals – their experience and knowledge come across very clearly. The story is told from the perspectives of multiple characters, with each chapter making it clear which perspective, and this just raises the suspense even more. The tension is real, and the world-building and character development are superb, with plenty of twists that throw you off the scent. This is one book where you won’t guess the ending, and what an ending it is. I have to say I truly enjoyed reading this; I was drawn in from the first page and hooked – like me, you’ll devour it in one sitting. Highly recommended reading; I’d love to read more from these talented authors.

After the death of Claire, a very close colleague, Sophie and Jolie are desperate to continue their research into a vaccine that could fight the mutations of a COVID-type virus and adapt it to protect lives. They turn to Magnus Vale, a high-flying multimillionaire and entrepreneur, for the millions in funding to create a laboratory with all the necessary equipment. But there are strings attached that are not in their best interests. Sophie also has to cope with family life, Carlos, and their twin daughters. Life becomes a race against a deadline with little time to eat or sleep.

It also gives the reader a fascinating insight into fast-tracking an immunization drug that requires approval from so many agencies and government departments. Overall, there are a few questions unanswered, but this book will appeal to medical thriller fans, and the main characters are real and relatable. Definitely give this book a try.

The Awakening: What Lies Inside by Davina Reddic is a psychological thriller. When Em James wakes up, she feels like she has the worst hangover ever. She shivers, she aches, and her head is pounding. Em can’t keep her eyes open, but as she drifts, she begins to describe her tortured life of loss and love. But there’s more to this than a hangover. Could it be that someone is trying to bring Em to her knees? As her memories go deeper, they get darker and more tortured, but it soon comes to light that she may not be telling the truth. She’s hiding something, something huge that haunts her, and she has to face her demons. When Em finally wakes up, she shows us her true self and reveals who is trying to bring her down – and why.

This is a debut novel but it’s a pretty explosive one, a fantastic start to what I believe will be a fulfilling career. This is one wild ride that you will not forget for a long time. The writing is wholly gripping, suspenseful, and full of surprises – you’ll never guess the ending, not in a million years! This is a very brave debut. Davina has all the hallmarks of an excellent writer, and I hope there is plenty more to come.
