Christian - Living

Nifty Neighbors: Mister Rogers & Jesus Christ by Dr. Tracy Emerick examines the concept of being a compassionate and selfless individual. Through stories and philosophy, Dr. Emerick compares the lives of Fred Rogers and Jesus Christ, shining a light on their shared values of kindness, empathy, and humility. The book talks about Rogers' legacy in children's television, especially how he used Mister Rogers' Neighborhood to teach emotional intelligence, acceptance, and respect for others. Rogers, a Presbyterian minister, modeled empathy, particularly in his inclusive actions, like sharing a pool with Officer Clemmons to break racial barriers. Dr. Emerick also leans into Jesus's teachings and his compassion, including loving enemies and embracing the marginalized. The book draws on the Parable of the Good Samaritan, which is showing love for all, regardless of differences; principles Dr. Emerick urges readers to adopt.
Nifty Neighbors by Dr. Tracy Emerick is a thoughtful look into the wonderful shared virtues of Mister Rogers and Jesus Christ, and it is so much more than just a standard comparison. Dr. Emerick’s writing is simple, straightforward, and totally accessible. As a reader who is not a Christian but was curious about the correlation, I walked away with a greater understanding because Dr. Emerick breaks it all down comfortably. I admit that, without this conversational style, a great deal of it may have been lost on me. I have very fond memories of watching Fred Rogers, but no real recollection of any singular scenario, so there was a nostalgic element to the work, too. The world can be tough and we do need reminders of the connections we share. So, for those seeking inspiration in today’s divisive world, Nifty Neighbors offers the much-needed balm to heal through empathy and kindness for truly meaningful change. Recommended.

As women, we are taught to maintain appearances and adopt some ways of acting. As we mature, we see how this becomes an obstacle to achieving our dreams. However, times change, and we can reinvent ourselves. Cassandra Crawley Mayo offers us advice on how to grow spiritually, develop our true potential, and fulfill our goals. Through her life experiences, she addresses various topics and links them to biblical precepts. She talks about inequality, especially in the workplace, and the burden of holding a mask imposed by erroneous beliefs that we can eliminate. She also motivates us to improve our physical and mental health, among other aspects. Is Your Way In Your Way? guides readers in being in communion with God and finding inner peace.
I loved Cassandra Crawley Mayo's anecdotes. Through stories from her youth to adulthood, she provides context for the challenges she has faced. She also shares family moments, showing positive aspects and difficulties but always highlighting good values. Her writing style is like a friend telling you about her life. Even the chapters, presented as letters, focus on the most common conflicts that women typically face. Her lessons are useful at any stage, whether in reflecting on resentment and how to overcome it, to living with greater well-being, or dealing with work and social spheres. The pace of the narrative is dynamic, alternating memories without losing fluidity. At the end of each section is space for reflection. The book concludes with a general summary to reinforce what has been learned. Is Your Way In Your Way? will help you face your fears and take advantage of every new opportunity for progress.

Lazy Love: Recognizing and Reversing the 4 Threats to Any Successful Relationship by Keion Henderson explores how to enhance relationships with family, friends, and partners. This interesting read delves into the familiar concept of ‘lazy love’ where complacency and neglect undermine the depth and fulfillment of our connections. Henderson examines the four Biblical types of love -- eros, phileo, storge, and agape -- and provides practical advice for overcoming common pitfalls that damage relationships. His insights aim to inspire readers to cultivate deeper, more meaningful love and improve their interpersonal bonds.
Author Keion Henderson’s integration of Biblical principles with practical advice offers a grounded yet insightful approach to improving relationships, and this book on relationship advice is like no other I’ve ever read. Henderson’s ability to identify and address the subtle threats to healthy relationships is illuminating because, even though the concept of complacency might be one that we’re all familiar with, actually spotting those automatic behaviors that complacency produces is a difficult task when you’re deep in it and blind to it. The book is also full of actionable steps you can take to identify and counteract these moments, and the practical guidance on overcoming complacency in love encourages you to actively engage in nurturing connections in a way you can start engaging with from page one. Henderson’s clear, compassionate writing style makes complex concepts accessible and inspiring, fostering a deeper understanding of how to love well whilst also being easy to read and enthusiastic and empowering. The Breakthrough Method by Cathy Morenzie is a faith-based holistic health system integrating spiritual, emotional, and physical transformation. The strategy is built on developing a clear, God-guided vision of health and identity, leaning into lasting change and not quick fixes. Morenzie teaches managing stress through a 3-Step Reset (pause, pray, practice) and reframing weight loss as spiritual stewardship, not just dieting. She talks about replacing restrictive diets with gratitude-based mindful eating, supported by Energy Evaluator tools. Exercise is presented as worship, and sleep is prioritized for overall vitality. Grace and habit formation, including routine-building and habit stacking, are key to this. Morenzie champions subverting fear and limiting beliefs through prayer and faith to sustain health. All her work aligns actions with Christian values in a lifelong journey toward physical and spiritual well-being.
The Breakthrough Method by Cathy Morenzie is a thoughtfully written guide, and Morenzie does an excellent job of bringing together spiritual principles and practical approaches to health. I like how her writing style is conversational, and the result is a cohesive message where every idea she presents feels grounded and accessible. I appreciate that she digs into the emotional and mental barriers that often hold us back, and counters these with an actionable method that helps readers to shift fear into faith through prayer and intentional practice. This is further highlighted in a discussion on the importance of integrity and consistent choices, supported by spiritual strength, in how deeply held values shape our health journey. The cornerstone in everything Morenzie teaches is scripture, and the use of biblical references illustrates her key concepts in a meaningful way. Overall, this is a wonderfully inspired holistic approach to wellness that integrates body, mind, and spirit. Very highly recommended.

Many people believe that anxiety is normal since it is so prevalent in today’s society. Kelly Jeanne Pittman’s wonderful book, Unleashing Happiness, shares the knowledge she learned while seeking ways to calm her child’s anxious thoughts. Kelly and her husband adopted a young girl from China who had experienced the trauma of being in different homes. While the principles in this book can help any parent improve their child’s life, I like that Kelly puts God’s love and grace in the center of all she learned. This is not a book you will pick up and read straight through. You will want to take time and digest all of Kelly’s wonderful wisdom. This book deals with many themes, including opposition, perfectionism, people-pleasing, anxiety, fear, trauma, catastrophizing, and more. Reading this book will equip you to help your child mold their brain into a joy-producing powerhouse.
I spent over forty years as a counselor and know the value of Kelly Jeanne Pittman’s book Unleashing Happiness. Kelly takes some difficult topics and beautifully explains them in layperson’s terms and gives wonderful illustrations from her life experiences. The information found in this great book helps readers understand that happiness is a choice and that we must face our fears and anxieties to overcome them. Using the skills Kelly shares, one can change one’s fearful attitude to hope and joy. Kelly explains the difference between chronic stress and trauma and teaches basic brain training skills. The author shows God as being central to change while not sounding preachy in any way. As a counselor, I highly recommend this book to all, especially parents.

Time to Really Live Free
Darlene Gaston

Christian - Living

Darlene Gaston was a devoted Christian who loved God and did her best to live a perfect life. She tried hard to prove her worth to receive his love and favor. The church she attended had rules that did not align with the word of God, and she felt like she was performing and living a fake life. Fortunately, she received a revelation that opened her eyes to God's unconditional love and grace. Time to Really Live Free is a book that documents the lessons she learned from her revelation. Her newfound knowledge led her church to turn on her, but this did not stop her new way of living. She began to relearn what having a meaningful relationship with God meant. Her understanding of sin, forgiveness, the law, and grace were restructured, and her life of freedom in Christ began.
Time to Really Live Free is a comprehensive study of the difference between doctrine-driven and spirit-driven lifestyles. Most churches today have doctrines to keep their congregants in line with fear and class sins in different categories, which are all man-based beliefs. Darlene Gaston addresses these ideologies that kept her and her family in bondage and debunks them with Bible scriptures. Her work is well-researched, with references and original scripture definitions. The book is easy to understand and has graphs, charts, and tables that visualize what the author explains. The book also has beautiful designs and clear images that correspond perfectly with the text. I loved reading this book and recommend it to anyone who wishes to understand what it means to have freedom in Jesus.

After having her daughter, Tracy thought her second pregnancy would be easier, but God had other plans for her and her family. The first sign that things would be different was the abnormal results of her first-trimester screening. Luckily, they were ruled out as possible false readings. Tracy did her best to balance her pregnancy and work until the birth of her son, Bryce. Unfortunately, her son was born with a congenital heart condition that would change her family’s life forever. Christian - Living

Captive Set Free by Valerie Limmer focuses on forgiveness. The book begins by listing different situations where people may be supported by their anger, but they choose to forgive and/or live peacefully with their circumstances. The author continues to illustrate the value of forgiveness through examples from other cultures, scripture, and personal experiences.
Captive Set Free will speak to the heart of the reader, encouraging them to take the path to salvation through love and forgiveness. The call to action is clear, as almost everyone has a situation they need to resolve, and the words in the text motivate readers to take positive steps to relieve themselves from the burdens weighing them down. One of the most poignant passages of scripture is quoted in the middle of the book, and the conversation between the apostle Peter and Jesus about the number of times we should forgive spoke to my heart. Valerie Limmer points out that humans are inclined to sin, and the Lord forgives us, so we should exercise the same compassion for those around us.
Limmer used many examples from her life and included relatable questions that will resonate with her readers. The book is a wonderful complement to daily scriptural studies, as it focuses on love and acceptance as recommended by Jesus. Captive Set Free would be a great book for anyone who is struggling with guilt over their actions or is frustrated about their need to forgive someone they feel may or may not deserve their pardon.
