Christian - Devotion/Study

In My Name by Marja Verschoor-Meijers explores the definition of not taking the Lord's name in vain. What exactly does that mean, and as Christians, do we follow that commandment daily? How can you live in today's society and still honour the Lord’s name? This is an insightful look into why it is better to listen to the voice of God’s spirit than follow holy law. It asks why would a caring God demand punishment for taking His name in vain? Why was it so important long ago for people to obey the law of God and receive His blessing, or face the consequences of disobedience; Galatians 3:10. This book uses stories from the Old and New Testaments, and the author's personal experience, to understand why this commandment became law, and how we can interpret this today. How can we show our obedience and love to God every day? There are thought-provoking questions to consider which will completely open your mind to new, life-changing possibilities. Through this remarkable book, you will understand how to open your heart to God's love and blessing.
This remarkable book takes an in-depth look into the meaning of living spiritually with God in your heart. The author asks the question, ‘Do you take the Lord's name in vain?’ The author thoroughly examines this question from a variety of angles. The book is very astute and looks at both Old and New Testament with an open mind. I loved the questions at the end of each chapter, and they make you consider your own lifestyle and values. The author has actually made me realise that attending church every Sunday is not enough. To give love to those who are not so fortunate, and not to judge others is a true way to receive God's blessing, ‘Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?’ An excellent read and recommended to anyone who isn’t afraid to question and explore new possibilities.

Grow in the Grace by James Callen is a book about the Christian experience and our service to God. Starting with the path to salvation and then going on to how to navigate our life of service to God, this is a well-crafted and inspirational book. The book is divided into six parts and twenty chapters, each one going over steps to lead us to a closer relationship with and service for God. Each chapter starts with a story, either personal or biblical, that illustrates what lesson will be dealt with. Jesus' dealings with Peter are used in each chapter to further help us see the lesson being taught. From Jesus' first meeting with Peter through his walk with him by the Sea of Galilee after his resurrection, Peter's life shows the trials, tribulations, failures, and victory that Christians can have in their walk in service to God.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It painfully reminded me of my own life as a Christian. Although I have been a born-again believer for 55 years, it showed me how little I have accomplished in the service of my savior. Each lesson is taught using the scriptures to back up the lesson being presented. I was deeply moved by Grow in the Grace, and have begun reassessing my own life and starting to make changes that will put me back on the road to acceptable service to God. James Callen has written a book that I would highly recommend to anyone, believer or non-believer, as there is a powerful message here that is applicable to anybody.

Christian - Devotion/Study

Struggling to maintain a personal relationship with God is part of what many deal with because of religion being filtered through people or organizations. IDEOLATRY – God is Not Your Problem by Dr. Rich Masek deals with many misconceptions as well as religious ideas that need to be confronted and made personal for each person, rather than just taking someone’s word as to their own belief. Dr. Rich Masek does a beautiful job of challenging the reader to confront their own beliefs vs. what others have tried to indoctrinate into their lives. Noted within the material is the fact that while the Spirit led Jesus, which is the desire of man, many times he is influenced by the law, traditions and man’s opinions.
A very profound statement by Dr. Masek is: “We develop our book of personal Ideolatry using our version of the truth. We tend to base that truth on relativity influenced by our various situations, observations, perspectives, and experience. Our Ideolatry affects our views of both God and His character.” (Pg. 64). Dr. Masek uses many illustrations, tables, charts, and scriptures to make his points and enlighten the reader. This material is not about pushing his agenda as much as allowing the reader the opportunity to challenge themselves and have a better understanding of how to make their own decisions. A great concept presented is would God conflict with Himself? Can God do good and evil? There are so many valid points to consider. This is indeed one of the most excellent books of our day. Every church, leader, college, and university should have this material. Dr. Masek says what should have been said many years earlier. This is definitely a 5-star book!

Hearing His Voice: Meeting Jesus in the Garden of Promise by Meredith Swift is a devotional book that can be read as a Bible study, a compelling spiritual testimony, or a guide to effective discipleship. In a time like ours, where a competitive culture creates much stress, it is easy to feel lonely and abandoned. Although our culture provides the most efficient communication tools, it enforces a deep sense of loneliness which can be painful. It is in this context that Ms. Swift offers an antidote that most readers take for granted — their sense of intimate connection with God, who loves them unconditionally.
The author takes the reader through her painful experience of loneliness to a meaningful encounter with God and shows how readers can find meaning and purpose by reconnecting intimately with their source. Highly imaginative and packed with insights, handy prayers, and reflections, this book is a tool that draws the reader into the Garden of Promise and allows them to experience the healing, loving touch of Jesus. In this book, the author invites readers to listen to the voice that comforts and that gives life.
The writing is friendly and it is packed with powerful biblical references that are as relevant as they are inspiring. It isn’t surprising that this book was written at a time when the author was going through challenges in her life, overcoming the painful experience of divorce and having to deal with relocation, career shift, and a daughter with a medical condition. It’s no doubt that God used her experience to communicate His love to humanity through the gift of this inspiring book. Hearing His Voice: Meeting Jesus in the Garden of Promise is a spiritual gem to receive with gratitude and pass on with love.

Nothing but the Blood of Jesus: How the Sacrifice of Jesus Saves the World from Sin by J.D. Myers is a devotional and inspirational book that explores the mystery of the agony and death of Jesus on the cross.T he author gives a powerful exposé on what the act of spilling Jesus’ blood reveals about the nature of God and His role in the redemption of humankind. This book explores the concepts of sin, law, sacrifice, scapegoating, and bloodshed - themes that run through the Bible - and it offers surprising gems that help readers to get the whole picture of God’s grace and what Jesus actually redeemed in humanity.
Readers will be able to make the connection with the God of the Old Testament, who appears to be vindictive and ready to defend His people, even to the point of bloodshed. But what is so unique about the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and what makes it different from every other blood that has been sacrificed in the name of religious salvation? This book answers similar questions, throwing a luminous light on the mystery of redemption and allowing readers to see where they fit into God’s plan of salvation.
Written in a simple and captivating style, this book is a gift of faith and it will offer answers to readers who do not buy into the Christian doctrine of salvation through the blood of Jesus. The author weaves his personal experiences into the work in a very interesting manner and features references to theologians and other thinkers who have articulated on the subject. Nothing but the Blood of Jesus: How the Sacrifice of Jesus Saves the World from Sin is a powerful message of love, a message that is inspired by the Scriptures and that explains God’s plan of salvation to suffering humanity. It is inspiring, encouraging, and a message of hope.

The Atonement of God: Building Your Theology on a Crucivision of God by J.D. Myers is a profound and thought-provoking book that gives good insight to the various views of atonement and explains the non-violent view of atonement. The book also speaks about humanity, sin, forgiveness, violence, justice, and the Scriptures, thereby throwing light on God and His relationship with everyone. The author thinks it is important for the sake of Christian living and theology to understand why Jesus went to the cross, what He accomplished on the cross, and what role the Father played in Jesus’ death on the cross. The purpose of the book is to have an understanding of God in line with His full revelation in Jesus Christ.
I like the author’s interpretation of theology because he makes it simple and helps readers understand the intent, meaning, and context. Though there are numerous views of atonement, the book summarizes and explains the four most common views of atonement. The author gives a lot of information about God, Jesus, the Holy Scriptures, and many other factors related to Christianity that makes it practical and understandable to readers. The author reiterates the power and presence of God and His grace through this book. It is a good book when it comes to clarifying a lot of questions about the Bible and the Scriptures, and broadens readers’ knowledge about atonement and how much we are all loved by God.
