Numbers!: Take the Dog Out, written by Lynne Dempsey and illustrated by Mandy Newham-Cobb, is a picture book that children can use to learn about numbers, addition, and subtraction. As children enjoy the beautiful illustrations, they will be able to follow along as new characters are introduced, which is how addition is presented. Then, as each character says goodbye, kids can see how subtraction works. Kids will also be able to take what they learned and count the bones that can be found throughout the story. Written in a simplistic, fun style, this book will surely entertain and educate youngsters.
The amazing, very colorful illustrations made the book for me. If I, a grown adult, couldn’t help but smile as I looked through the engaging pages, I can only imagine how young children will react. My only concern is that without a storyline or more words to explain what is going on, children will definitely need an adult’s help to understand the pictures and how addition and subtraction work. However, once they get the hang of it, they will absolutely love it and want to read it over and over again. Numbers!: Take the Dog Out would be a great book to add to any young child’s library. I can definitely see parents reading this to their kids and teachers reading it to their students for years to come. Author Lynne Dempsey and illustrator Mandy Newham-Cobb are ones to watch out for. I will certainly keep my eye out for more books by these two.

The Crystal Navigator: A Perilous Journey Through Time by Nancy Kunhardt Lodge is a children's fantasy book in the same tradition as The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland. Within the pages we find young Lucy Nightingale, a girl who can make things happen with her thoughts. The trouble for her comes when during an oral report she draws a blank and loses her confidence. When a new teacher assigns a project about paintings, Lucy knows the best way to make this assignment an A is to talk to the painters, and so she finds someone to help her time travel to finish her assignment.
On a mission to find more books my nephew can enjoy, I decided to read The Crystal Navigator. This book made me smile and laugh and truly feel like a kid again while I was reading it. It is the perfect book to get kids engaged and enjoying a story. Whether you have a kid who likes to read already or one you are hoping will start to read more, Nancy Kunhardt Lodge really knows what she is doing. Lucy is an engaging little girl who could easily be any child today. Her imagination is wonderful and the adventure she has in seeking to speak with the painters is amazing and truly fantastic. I am making sure that my nephew reads this one and would highly recommend any parent who wants to encourage their child to read to take a look at it too.

The Pea and the Princess may remind some readers of Jack and the Beanstalk as well as the more obvious fairy tale. Cheekerchuck is the story of an old woman who finds a giant egg in her garden. The Three Garden Fairies is the story of a man and his dog who find a bridge to an enchanted wood where fairies are quarreling about who should be crowned queen. The Strawberry That Liked to Brag is an interactive story whose ending depends on what the reader decides.
Lil L. Alexander's children's book, Yummy Stories, is filled with stories about vegetables and fruits. Sounds pretty tame, right? Wrong! Each of these very yummy stories is a perfect little gem of a fractured fairy tale. They're clever and witty and designed to make you smile with delight as you read -- and, unless you're made of stone, smile you will. Alexander's rhymes are elegant and earthy all at once, and they're never forced or obvious. These stories beg to be read aloud, and I had to restrain myself from doing just that as I read. Anda Cofaru's illustrations are superb! Each page is a giant watercolor filled with lush green landscapes where giant broccoli stalk trees seem very much in place. I especially loved the asparagus-spear fence in the strawberry tale. Yummy Stories is a yummy book indeed, and it is most highly recommended.

The childhood rhyme, "Give me give me never gets; don't you know your manners yet," rattles through my mind as I read this charming story, Treasures in the Winter Vault by Debbie Bertram and Lisa Detanna. It's a lesson that children and adults alike need to learn and re-learn over and over again. Bobby wants a tablet. He wants it more than anything else in the world. His parents won't buy him a tablet and Bobby is very upset. All of his friends at school have their own tablets. Why can't he? Grandma and Grandpa come for a visit and set about explaining to Bobby the importance of working for what you want in life. When asked if he had saved any of his own money to buy a tablet, Bobby confesses to having spent his allowance on candy. Grandma tells him a story that her mother once told her - a story about a dancing elephant and the busy squirrels, and how the dancing elephant had to learn the importance of saving, not just playing and having fun. Bobby brightens at the idea of saving his allowance until he has enough to buy his own tablet. He appears to have learned a valuable lesson. As his grandparents leave his room, they drop some coins in his piggy bank to get him started.
Debbie Bertram and Lisa Detanna have created a charming picture book story in Treasures in the Winter Vault. The illustrations are colorful and complement the story with action scenes of Bobby, of the squirrels saving their nuts for winter, and the elephant who only wants to dance. Through this clever little story, the author and illustrator have provided parents, caregivers, and teachers with a valuable teaching tool. Authors Carol McCloud and Caryn Butzke do a beautiful job of weaving a story of how an individual can be happy using the letters A to Z as bucket fillers. They carefully explain at the beginning of the book that people fill others’ buckets every day in various ways. Soon they take the reader along this alphabetical journey, exploring how each letter can display a word that will enable the reader to learn about how that particular letter/word can help the reader to become a better bucket filler. Taking a young reader through the alphabet, letter by letter, and examining what that letter could represent is fun and creative. This is a joyful way to expose a child to new words and positive ways of making one choose happiness over being sad and rejected.
Illustrator Glenn Zimmer does a wonderful job of creating each boy and girl and their fine facial expressions during the good and maybe not so good moments found within the story. The book is very colorful and engaging, not only in the story, but in the illustrations as well. This is certainly a well-written and illustrated book, which should be in libraries and homes everywhere. This book gives a strong reinforcement for young readers to find the positive in life to keep their buckets filled, as well as to share with others so their buckets can be filled with joy. The authors challenge the reader to become a bucket filler and find happiness to share with others on a daily basis.

Charmaine Hammond continues the Toby series with her latest book “Toby the Pet Therapy Dog Says Be a Buddy, Not a Bully.” In this installment Buddy visits a classroom of students; the teacher announces that Buddy is about to receive an award: The Gold Star Friendship Award. He earned the award for being a “buddy, not a bully.” Miss Charmaine explained to the class why Buddy won the award; another dog took Buddy’s favorite Teddy Bear and tore it up and then the dog growled at Buddy. Toby barked for help and then told the other dog that being a bully is not nice. The children learned what to do when they were bullied.
I love the way the author Charmaine Hammond explains a therapy dog’s role and the lesson of how to deal with a bully. It is unfortunate that bullying is so rampant in our society that it makes it necessary for children to be taught this lesson. The illustrator, Rose Anne Prevec, is a talented artist; her art work complements the text. Children will love the bright and colorful illustrations. Toby comes to life through the tale and pictures; his personality shines through as he interacts with the children. I believe children will respond positively to this book and the entire series, which should be in every school and public library.

Would you like to live in Arizona? And do you know what the state of Arizona is like? When you read this book, you will find out just what this really cool state is like. The front of the book has a map that shows a lot of important cities in Arizona and it tells you all about this being the Grand Canyon State. It tells how wide and how deep the canyons are, and has pictures to show you what it looks like. It also shows you the best way to get around in the canyon. And if you don’t live there but go on vacation to Arizona, you will find many things you can do while visiting this beautiful state.
"Arizona Is Where I Live" is an awesome book inside and out. The book is well-written, fun and exciting and the pictures really fit the words written so well. The colors are beautiful and I love the color book and crayon type illustrations. They are so beautiful that I just enjoyed looking at the pictures. And I really like the blank pages in the back of the book for children to draw something about where they live, as well as write a story about the state they live in. This encourages children to think, draw and tell stories on their own. My four year-old niece loves to look at the pictures, and make up a story pretending the pictures are about where we live in Virginia. Books like this are very valuable to children and can teach them many things. "Arizona Is Where I Live" should be in every school library and would be a great book for classrooms and a child’s personal library. I encourage you to pick up a copy today. You will be very pleased!

The colors are beautiful and I love the color book and crayon type illustrations. They are so beautiful that I just enjoyed looking at the pictures. And I really like the blank pages in the back of the book for children to draw something about where they live, as well as write a story about the state they live in. This encourages children to think, draw and tell stories on their own. My four year-old niece loves to look at the pictures, and make up a story pretending the pictures are about where we live in Virginia. Books like this are very valuable to children and can teach them many things.
