Macedonia, 1902. The German war machine and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire loom over Europe as the Great Powers jostle for supremacy in the Balkans.
Jon Ahmeti, a young Albanian man living in Macedonia, is drawn into a web of Great Power conspiracy with Macedonian separatists, Greek rebels, and Bulgarian nationalists that challenges his notions of ethnic identity and the nature of Balkan conflict. He is cast across the land of his birth by a British spymaster as he fights for the survival of his family while facing the horrific realities of ethnic cleansing.
The story is told from multiple perspectives, including the leader of an infamous Slavic terrorist group, a beautiful Greek revolutionary, and a battle-hardened Bulgarian colonel. Each character provides a glimpse into the explosive event that ties them together, providing a unique look at how each Balkan tribe interprets history, views each other, and rationalizes their gruesome actions.
