Romance - Fantasy/Sci-Fi
Foundra by Emmanuel M Arriaga is the story of a man who literally has the weight of the world on his shoulders and with no way for him to get away from his responsibilities. Neven never knew that life could be this complicated. He always had a peaceful existence, so he was baffled when his life turned upside down when he met Lenrete. Immortal and more powerful than he could ever imagine, Lenrete was the catalyst that started a chain of events making him who he is. So he became a Secnic and learned that he was actually quite skilled at killing people. The more he delves deeper into Lenrete’s life, the more he discovers that there are horrifying beings and immortals and some of them are hell-bent on destroying the galaxy. Sure, he is rather good at killing, but will it be enough to keep him alive and save the galaxy? He has to dig deep inside himself to find the courage, the potential and the determination to help everyone survive.
Science fiction is not my usual cup of tea, but when it is this good, I cannot resist it. Full of action and plenty of drama, this novel had me on the edge of my seat and holding my breath. I was invested from the get-go; I wanted to learn more about this galaxy, the people and the way of life. The author provided a healthy amount of background information on some of the most important extra-dimensional beings because, without them, things would have been a little too confusing. Neven is the perfect protagonist for this story; he is sharp, intelligent and willing to work hard, even though he wasn’t so keen on the idea of becoming a Secnic. He adapted quickly and with that, he turned out to be the best of all the characters. The pace was fast, the flow was great and the maps and diagrams of the galaxy helped me put things in perspective. This is an excellent start to a series that will be very enjoyable for avid readers of science fiction and mystery.

Romance - Fantasy/Sci-Fi
Harlow has lived on the West Coast since her parents died years ago. When she finally graduates college and lands a job in teaching, she realizes it's not quite what she wanted to do. So she packs up and heads back to New York on her birthday. There, she meets Rex, a nearby tavern owner, and sparks fly. That's not all as she's suddenly given the key to her old family home, learns that one of the most influential people in New York has been watching her and buying her paintings, and that she's part of a paranormal world she never knew existed anywhere other in than her paintings. She doesn't need any extra baggage but finds she is tied to both of the new men in her life. As she struggles with her feelings, evil outside forces are bent on using her for their own will. Read Marked for Darkness: Possessed by Darkness Book 1 by Raven Woodward to see how she fares in an otherworldly realm now her own.
Raven Woodward should be proud of her ability to craft such a spectacularly dark and still fascinating world. The scenes Harlow is compelled to paint turn out to be a second world that she is drawn to in another manner. I found myself drawn to the characters that resemble twisted versions of fairytale creatures like vampires and werewolves. The scenery also has enough similarities to Earth that readers can picture this new planet with their mind's eye. While the visuals are captivating, the storyline was also unique from others I have encountered. It followed similar paranormal romance themes but was different enough to keep readers' attention. Fans of this genre are sure to enjoy Marked For Darkness.

Romance - Fantasy/Sci-Fi
There is darkness in this fairytale that is so appealing, and yet reading it feels so liberating, as if assuring you that everything’s all right. Missing Charlie: A Fairytale Romance by Jess K. Hardy takes romantic fantasy to a new level. Five years ago, 23-year-old Nona May Taylor kissed a guy she hardly remembers, and it proved very costly as a witch named Rebecca Delanore placed a curse on her. This curse has transmuted her physiology to that of an octogenarian. As if this wasn’t enough, Rebecca steals her identity, forcing Nona to live a hermit life in a cabin in the Montana wilderness. She lives with a fox, a pig, a hen, a rabbit, and a ferret, and she takes care of them because her animal companions have also fallen under Rebecca’s evil curse. Nona’s life takes a turn when she rescues an injured hiker named Charlie Brown. Nona finds herself drawn to the recuperating Charlie - and he may well be the key to breaking the curse - but life has no guarantees.
After reading Missing Charlie, I reflected that Disney could well adapt this for the big screen as a fairytale movie for adults, which will probably appeal more to viewers and critics than the live-action renderings of their animated blockbusters. As a novel, it has grit, charm, and uniqueness in tackling a common theme in the genre, spinning it into a meaty storyline with the necessary accouterments to give it the wow factor. Jess K. Hardy crafts a strong emotional link between Nona and Charlie, developing their feelings as they get to know each other and find a way for Nona and her family to break free of the curse. Even more successful is how the potency of Rebecca’s magic influence plays an important part in dictating the destiny of those who bear it. It makes for a satisfying resolution at the end. This is a must-read fairytale for grownups and romance fans alike.

Romance - Fantasy/Sci-Fi
The Last Lumenian is a lavish and engrossing work of fiction in the fantasy, action, and adventure sub-genres, and was penned by author S. G. Blaise. Written for young adult and adult readers alike to enjoy, this immersive tale introduces us to a princess unlike most others, whose fortitude and rebellious nature find her in a precarious position even from the novel’s start. Lilla takes solace in her rebel friends and surrounding servants as his father, the king, is lost to his madness. But when a new general arrives on the scene and a powerful Archgod declares magical war, Lilla discovers that the fight ahead of her is far bigger than she expected.
Author S. G. Blaise has crafted a fantastic escape from reality which is beautifully easy to fall into but very had to let go of at the close. One of the things that really captivated me about the work was its pacing and story construction, which leaves you wanting more and peeking ahead at the end of every chapter. As the story progresses and we learn more and more about Lilla, the character development and close narration give her an inspirational and emotional resonance that makes the story even harder to put down, resulting in a wildly inventive and intricately planned fantasy rollercoaster which delivers everything it promises. Overall, I would highly recommend The Last Lumenian for fantasy fans seeking strong female leads, solid worldbuilding, visceral action, and plenty of magic. A truly epic opening to an exciting new series.

Braving unknown dangers after a Coronal Mass Ejection hits earth, a doctor and her new husband trek across the post-apocalyptic United States to reunite with her family in the thrilling science-fiction novel, Hunting Daybreak (Shattered Sunlight Book 2) by E.A. Chance. Following a powerful CME that wiped out a large portion of the population and disabled technology-supported systems and machines, Dr. Riley Poole, her daughter Julia, and her new husband, Dr. Cooper, are stranded over a thousand miles from Riley's Colorado home. Leaving Julia ensconced safely in western Virginia, the newlyweds start the hazardous trip across the continent to Colorado to find out how the rest of Riley's family fared. With most modern devices inoperable and ineffective, Riley and Coop ride horses and take camping gear. However, they are unprepared for the new government takeover and the militant forces hunting them down. Can Riley and Coop reach the Colorado border without coming to harm? If they do survive, will they find Riley's family safe and sound?
Depicting the effects of an earth-shattering event, Hunting Daybreak (Shattered Sunlight Book 2) by E.A. Chance is a breathtaking science-fiction novel. Set in a post-apocalyptic world that is so close to the present, the story ignites the imagination from the very beginning. Skillfully intertwined within the plot, the environment and culture shifts give the storyline a sense of reality. The protagonists are likable as well as relatable, and I admired their initiative and resourcefulness as they trekked across what would be considered alien and remote territory. The other characters who were not as accommodating or honorable made perfect contrasts and gave the story authenticity. It is a captivating story with engaging characters and a dramatic and intense plot. Profound and inspiring, the exciting and suspenseful tale will entertain and thrill everyone who enjoys post-apocalyptic science-fiction novels that have a plausible storyline.

Romance - Fantasy/Sci-Fi
Memories of the Future: My 2020 Vision is a work of fiction in the science fiction, time travel, and interplanetary adventure sub-genres, and was penned by author David W. Loomis. Written for a generally mature audience, there are some small instances of violence and sexual references, but it is largely non-graphic. The two central characters are grandfather Eon and his grandson Quinn, who find themselves embroiled in a quest to save the planet when the evil fallen angel Dogod begins an onslaught through the universe. As Eon and Quinn travel on, so begins a journey to discover the dark heart of greed, and to spread the power of love.
Author David W. Loomis has crafted a fantastic adventure novel with plenty of amazing universal vistas, foreign planets to explore and amazing twists and turns in the plot. Fans of traditional blockbuster sci-fi adventures will appreciate the spirit of the novel, which is deeply inspired by a love and appreciation for life and the planet we have. The time travel concepts are well planned and well organized within the plot to provide plenty of opportunities for adventure, and the characters have a great emotional bond and common ideals that keep us invested in them as the story unfolds more. I also felt that the dialogue was particularly poignant in getting those underlying messages across. Overall, I would highly recommend Memories of the Future: My 2020 Vision for fans of science fiction and time travel: an action-packed novel with an emotive, effective message at its heart.

Romance - Fantasy/Sci-Fi
Kisses of My Enemy is the third book in the Harry Ferguson Chronicles by William David Ellis, a gorgeous treat for fans of well-plotted fantasy novels. This author demonstrates a powerful creative mind, weaving a yarn that melds different elements together to create a wonderful reading experience: time travel, history, and magic. Harry is a time traveler with the mission to destroy one of the deadliest technologies of the Nazis. They are conjuring up a demon who is supposed to give limitless power to their soldiers and the witch belle Rodum is charged with protecting it. There is a twist, for the witch falls in love with this time-traveling dragon rider, yet she must destroy him. Thousands of years away, a woman pines for Harry. She is Sarah and she visits him in his dreams. But she is also trapped in her time for the survival of her kind. Can she protect Harry? Can Harry beat the witch and accomplish a deadly mission entrusted to him?
This is, indeed, a fascinating story and I enjoyed the way the author builds the conflict. He uses the idea of forbidden love to raise the stakes. The protagonist is in a very tight spot and the reader follows his motivation keenly and wants to know what happens to him. I was curious from the beginning with the powerful description of the protagonist, waking up to pain and cold, strapped to a steel table. I wanted to know why and who he is and what happens next to him. The historical hints are strong and are evocative of the devious schemes of the Nazi regime. The gorgeous writing got to me quickly and I enjoyed the lyrical character of the prose. Some of the passages are so beautiful in themselves that readers will pause to savor them a bit longer. Here is an example: “Longing for the darkness of hypothermia, he drifted, easing into its dark clutches, but then he heard through the chatter of his own teeth a song.” Kisses of My Enemy is a delightful read with powerful plot points and an ending that wraps it up so well.

Romance - Fantasy/Sci-Fi
As The World Falls Down is a work of science fiction penned by author Katy Nicholas, focused on survival in a post-apocalyptic dystopian world: “From the ashes of the old world, something new is rising...” Our focus is set on a wipeout situation after a mysterious plague kills nearly the whole of humanity. Halley Clarke is a survivor, and when she ventures out and finds Nate Reynolds, she realizes that they can’t have survived without good reason. The virus has changed them both, with instincts and voices they never knew before. Together, they desire the truth of this new world, but it may be the very thing that tears them apart.
Accessible to teen audiences and up for its non-graphic content, author Katy Nicholas has created a highly engaging science fiction and dystopian tale with lots to offer. The backstory of the destruction of humanity is well played out with plenty of excellent detail and thought-out construction, and the strange new world that Nate and Halley embark on is beautifully atmospheric, thanks to the author’s descriptive techniques. The novel is as much a mystery plot as it is a survival tale, and the encounters of the plot structure have a slow but satisfying feel to them as we work towards uncovering the mysteries of the virus, its true effects on people, and what the future of Earth may be. Overall, As The World Falls Down is a great read, recommended for fans of dystopian adventure and mystery tales in unusual settings.

Romance - Fantasy/Sci-Fi
Inside the Sun: A Novel is the third book in the 8th Island Trilogy by Alexis Marie Chute. All the worlds are dying and there is nothing anyone can do about it except Ella, her mother Tessa, and her grandfather Archie. What started as a quest to save Ella is now a quest to save all the worlds. To save the worlds, Finnah the Star needs a key and she wants Ella to bring it. The way to salvation is not easy, enemies are coming at them from everywhere, and it is up to Ella, her family, and friends to defeat the villains to save it all.
The cover is gorgeous and fits well with the vibe of the story. It is bright and attention-grabbing, just like the story. This latest installment provides a stunning conclusion to the series and the author has done an incredible job of providing a cohesive story as well. The story itself is mesmerizing. You cannot help but feel a part of Ella’s struggles, Tessa’s desperation, and Archie’s determination. The descriptions are out of this world. The images are vivid, the characters are relatable and heroic yet not unapproachable, and the overall feel of Inside the Sun is magical. I love how Archie, Ella, and Tessa all have their quests and they get enough page space to give readers an ending. The glossary at the back is fantastic for first-time readers, but reading this fascinating yet incredibly hypnotic story in order is an experience unlike any other. Alexis Marie Chute deserves 5 stars and a lot more.

Romance - Fantasy/Sci-Fi
Devil's Claim by Dariel Raye and Muffy Wilson is a mesmerizing tale that explores the power of a curse and a family’s struggle to get free from the claims of a demon. A curse has been in their family for generations and now Apache Elder Aidan Stringfellow fears his brilliant son David may be the next victim of a curse made in a moment of quick temper. While he believes he has found a cure, he is far from the truth because David has dark secrets of his own. Katala, whose destiny is linked to David’s, feels the dormant passions in her being awaken. She wants to fight for David, but as she looks at the life of this man, she is plunged into a web of mystery and deceit. She unearths one painful fact after another, so many that she begins to doubt her own identity. Is David redeemable and can a deadly pact with a demon made long ago be voided? Time drives their lives towards the inevitable.
I don’t usually read a novel written by two authors, always feeling there could be some discordance in the narrative voice, but Dariel Raye and Muffy Wilson prove the contrary. The quality of the writing is stellar, exceptionally good, with the evocation of powerful emotions right from the very opening of the story. The curse can’t be reversed. From the start, the reader understands that the premise is strong — something terrible and irreversible has happened. Now, the suspense begins as the reader wants to delve into the secret lives of the characters. They wait in longing for what happens at the end while the authors take them along an exciting path. Devil's Claim is a wonderful achievement and a great offering to fans of strong literary voices. This is a world where the supernatural intersects with the ordinary and where magic collides with human will. It is utterly spellbinding.
