Christian - Devotion/Study
Year of Trial, Year of Grace: A Catholic’s Search for Faith, by Clayvon C. Harris, is a surprising and delightful book of devotions. It was written as a series of reflections for a weekly church bulletin, and evolved into an examination of Harris’ own faith. Occurring during a crisis time within the Philadelphia Catholic church, many topics are covered including New Age teachings, love, guilt, and God’s occasional silence. Faith is extolled as the only remedy that matters when nothing else can make a difference, when no solution is humanly possible. Studded with Bible verses, these reflections convey hope and God’s sovereignty in any situation. The reflections are meant to ask a few questions about a topic, make the reader think, and ultimately draw him/her back to Christ.
Health problems? Conflicts with today’s carnality? Gross unfairness in circumstances? There is a supernatural answer and it is God. “God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress,” according to Psalm 46:2, and if God is all He says He is, who should we fear? Who can harm us? I found this book full of comfort as I, like everyone else, go through tough experiences at times. If I had never learned to lean on God, in fact to let Him carry me, I would never make it. When a person is young, they may feel they are invincible, that if they plan well nothing can go wrong. Nothing could be further from the truth. Death spares no one and so there are losses of loved ones or our own untimely illness to upset our plans. There is nothing like losing someone to make you reevaluate your life. But God is faithful and will never leave us or forsake us. Year of Trial, Year of Grace by Clayvon C. Harris would be a great comfort to anyone you know experiencing difficulties. I feel any Christian would enjoy it, although it is written especially for those of the Catholic faith.

“Question Everything: A Fresh Way to Read the Best-Selling Book of All Time” was written by B. Tyler Ellis. The author has created an interesting way to study the Bible; in this book the reader will find a question pertaining to every verse in the New Testament. Most of the questions appear very simple; however, they are created to get the reader thinking. Too often we read the scriptures and do not comprehend or think about what we have just read; by using this method readers will first read the scripture and then the question. At the end of each chapter the author has a few questions for the reader to answer: “What does the chapter reveal about God? Myself? Others? What difference does it make?”
I enjoy Bible study and was intrigued with the author's approach. I soon realized that I could not answer some of the questions as easily as I expected. This is not a book for an in-depth study but is excellent for a beginner. This would be a great study for a middle school or high school group. The questions could easily stimulate a deeper discussion. The author does not provide answers to the questions; the format leads the reader to find the answers for themselves. There is a big difference between what the scriptures say and what they mean. Too often readers turn to a reference book to define the meaning of the scripture, but with this method of study the reader develops their own understanding. This book will make a great addition to your library.

Daily Spiritual Vitamins and Minerals for Your Soul

Just as we need the right balance of daily vitamins and minerals for our physical body, we need to feed our soul daily vitamins and minerals from God’s Word. Myrlande E. Sauveur has written a book of devotions to help readers feast on promises God has for us in His Word. What makes this devotional book unique is that Ms. Sauveur gives one devotion each month, and then a verse for each day of the month to get along with the devotion. Everything is very well-organized, making the devotions easy to follow.
I have a lot of devotional books, but this one is different from the rest. I really like having one topic to focus on each month, and then have a different verse to go with it. There are twelve different topics to focus on, like waiting on God, anger, God’s love, dealing with depression, and God’s plan for our lives. All twelve topics focus on issues that we all face in our everyday Christian life, and even though most of these things I have read about before, the author explains those things in her own unique way, giving us deep insight into the subject. Ms. Sauveur has discovered a very clever way to give our souls that daily dose of spiritual vitamins. One thing I want to do with the daily verses is to memorize some of them so that I can focus on the monthly topic even more. I really encourage every Christian to read and digest this book to encourage their walk with the Lord. I think it will be an amazing addition to libraries too.

Christian - Devotion/Study
Through spending daily time with God, Kristi Burchfiel created 'The Daily Devotional Series'. One thing that makes this different from most devotional books is that the devotions are in chronological order. Ms. Burchfiel starts in the first chapter of Matthew and goes through the last chapter of Revelation, and all of her devotions are listed in the order of each book and each chapter in that book.
I really like this book of devotions. I have many devotionals, and this is the first one that is in chronological order. For each day, there is a scripture, an explanation of the scripture and a response to the scripture. Each devotion is very short, but don’t let that discourage you, because with each day’s devotion, you will find a special truth that will encourage you throughout the day. The more experienced Christian, as well as a new Christian, can use this devotional, because we all need to be reminded of God’s truth to us, and there is no better way than reading this book. This would be a great resource to use if you are reading through the Bible. "365 Devotions through the New Testament" is definitely a book I will be keeping on my Kindle. I will take it with me wherever I go, so I will have access to encouragement from God’s word when I need it!
Also at the back of this book you will find other Devotionals from Kristi Burchfiel in 'The Daily Devotional Series'. Check them out. I am sure you will find one that will interest you. I encourage you to pick up a copy of this book and see for yourself just how awesome it is.

Michael Whitworth in his book "The Epic of God" does a beautiful job of weaving together the story of creation and other biblical stories that transports the reader to a different time. The story flows smoothly and with a richness of depth into biblical meanings. It appears that nearly all of the major points found in Genesis are covered and given enriching thought and meaning.
The author also includes talking points at the end of each chapter, which I found very rewarding and beneficial. I appreciate how the author speaks of his own personal life and experiences. He allows me as the reader to relate to him on a personal level.
Covering the Book of Genesis the author helps me to see how my life can be valuable by learning from those in the past and looking forward to my future while enjoying my present. Preparing my life for eternity is the closing point of the book and a great way to allow me to look within my life for spiritual direction. "The Epic of God" is an excellent guide through the Book of Genesis.

The Door to Fruitfulness

Christian - Devotion/Study
Author Tammy Jordan has written a truly inspiring book in "The Door to Fruitfulness". It is not long, just under eighty pages, but it gives a message that many readers will love and can apply in their own lives. The author begins by telling the reader to turn to God for salvation, but what she writes in the next chapters is truly unique. In giving God our first fruits, we must be willing to allow God to prune from our lives what we don't need just as the tender of an arbor prunes back unnecessary branches from a fruitful vine. If we don't understand God's ways or what has been eliminated from our lives, we must trust His wisdom. If we feel depleted, needing water and nutrients like a vine, we must understand that God sees the bigger picture and knows just how our talents and the gifts of our time are best used.
"The Door to Fruitfulness" is a unique and well-written book in an age where religious self-help books abound. It is for the Christian believer to read and follow. Tammy Jordan guides the readers into how they can accept God's plans, not their own, and then giving their talents, their time and their compassion even for those who have hurt them, so that we all can be used as God sees fit. "The Door to Fruitfulness" is beautifully illustrated and at the end of each chapter there is a section for the reader to write down their own "First Fruit Thoughts". Christian readers everywhere will want to read and also own this delightful book.

Embrace Grace

Christian - Devotion/Study
Liz Curtis Higgs once again knocks it out of the ballpark. When Liz writes, it is like she is speaking directly to the reader and knows each one’s fears and concerns. Self-described as a girl who has been hurt by almost everyone in her life, Curt-Higgs helps others take of their “I’m a bad person” coats and embrace grace, doubt, faith, truth, sin, forgiveness and repentance.
Who among us hasn’t wondered how God could love us after all the 'bad' stuff we’ve done? All we need to know is that God has forgiven us and loves us, which should be more than enough for anyone. Liz helped me understand what grace truly means. I have struggled with its definition, but she perfectly explained it when she said it is simply God’s love. Liz is known as an encourager and she certainly provides tons of it in this book. Sharing her own story as well as stories of other women who have written to her about their overwhelming feelings of guilt, Curtis-Higgs shows us that we don’t have to feel as if we don’t belong anywhere because God can use us, as broken and imperfect as we are, for His glory.
One warning though; if this is the first Liz Curtis Higgs you read, once you have finished, you are going to want all of the other dozens of books she has written. Yeah, she is THAT good.
Thank you, Lizzie, for showing women what God wants for their lives and the gift He has waiting for them.

Christian - Devotion/Study
"The Sad Mad Glad Christian: The Anatomy of Your Faith" is an inspiring book written by Chuck Stump and Jim Strawn. Faith is believing in something you cannot see physically, but believing that there is a greater purpose at work. With many verses quoted from the books of John, Hebrews, Romans, Psalms, Exodus, Genesis, Matthew and Luke, the authors have written a good book in simple language so that children can understand and learn about God and Christianity in a creative and informative way. With vivid photos that bring the verses alive, many lessons from God are explained in simple terms, including Creation, celebrating Christmas, Apostles, Disciples, Sacrifice and more. There are many symbols of our faith including rainbows, doves and water, which remind us that God loves us. We all as individuals must try to do one random act of kindness each day where we can lend a helping hand selflessly.
Chuck Stump and Jim Strawn have teamed up to co-author a very meaningful book that is packed full of spiritual messages and written on a level that children will be able to easily comprehend. The beautiful photos and the colored text bring the book to life and compliment the wording perfectly. I absolutely loved the spiritual messages and was able to easily read this book with my eight year old daughter. She loved the questions at the bottom of the pages as they prompted her to think about her own experiences of Christianity and God. This book is a great addition to any Sunday school or home school curriculum and goes hand-in-hand with the teachings of the Lord. It is a book that every Christian child should have in their hands because it is much more than a book, for it truly is something they can take away and apply in their own lives.

Christian - Devotion/Study
Authors CJ and Shelley Hitz do a wonderful job of sharing stories from their lives and then addressing the issues presented in those stories with scripture quotes and examples from the Bible. At the end of each section, they provide questions to consider and provide sample prayer suggestions.
One of the first points the authors make is that we call Jesus our Lord, but we still don't obey him. They explain that we don't obey God because we think His math is wrong. Forgive those who hurt us? That doesn't add up, at least that's what we think.
The reader will learn the author's perspective on Jesus being the greatest mathematician that ever lived, with examples like the shepherd who left his 99 sheep in order to find the one lost sheep and the woman who poured the expensive perfume over Jesus' head and feet.
My husband was asleep when I first started reading this book and when he got up, he saw that I was crying. "What's wrong?" he asked. "God's working on me and helping me forgive," I answered. That's how powerful this book was for me.
I chose to read this book because I knew that I had a problem with not forgiving someone in my life, and I wanted to know how to deal with it. This book delivered -- boy did it ever deliver! At several key points throughout the book, I felt God talking directly to me to deal with my own un-forgivingness, and I stopped and prayed and felt the healing begin. If you haven't forgiven someone in your life, and you want to learn how to do that, you need to read this book. It'll definitely make a difference on your life.

The Big Picture

Christian - Devotion/Study
The Big Picture is a deep read. The author, Dr. Beyr Reyes, Phd, has done a lot of research on biblical matters pertaining to the End Times. Most of this book is for the scholar who wants to debate the End Times. There is a lot of Scripture references to provide the reader with tools for looking up and deciding what the Big Picture may be for humans.
I don't disagree with the scripture references; however, I think that anyone can "use" God's Word as a tool to make their judgments instead of a "this is right because it's in the Bible" approach. As a Christian and as a reader I felt that this book has great information but might appeal to more readers if it were more on the "everyman's" reading level.
